Milestone 3 of 3: Dignity, and the relationships between grahas

Dignity

Exaltation, debilitation, Mūlatrikoṇa and own sign — the judgment you will make more often than any other.

Reading: BPHS 3.49–54About 105 min

Assumes you have done: Units 1–3, and the twelve signs in order

Why this matters

If you learn one technical thing this week, learn this. Dignity is the first question a practised reader asks about any planet and the last one they stop asking. It takes six verses to state and about twenty minutes to learn, and it changes what every other technique in the book means. A yoga formed by a debilitated planet is a different object from the same yoga formed by an exalted one, and BPHS assumes throughout that you already know this.

Learn

Everything so far has been description. This is the first thing in the course you will actually use, and you will use it constantly.

The question dignity answers

Put it plainly: a planet in a sign is a guest in someone else’s house. Dignity asks how welcome it is. In some houses it is honoured. In one it is at home because it owns the place. In another it is barely tolerated. And in one — the opposite of the house where it is honoured — it is thoroughly out of place and can barely function.

That is the whole idea. The six verses just fill in which is which.

Exaltation, and the elegant part

Verses 49 and 50 name the seven exaltation signs in planetary order — Aries, Taurus, Capricorn, Virgo, Cancer, Pisces, Libra — and then the seven degrees in the same order: 10, 3, 28, 15, 5, 27, 20.

Line them up:

GrahaExalted inAt
SunAries10°
MoonTaurus3°
MarsCapricorn28°
MercuryVirgo15°
JupiterCancer5°
VenusPisces27°
SaturnLibra20°

Then Parashara does something that saves you half the work: and in the 7th sign from the said exaltation sign each planet has its debilitation to the same degrees.

He does not give you a debilitation table. He gives you a rule that generates one. The Sun exalts in Aries and falls in Libra, both at 10°. Jupiter exalts in Cancer and falls in Capricorn, both at 5°.

Note what the degree is and is not. The whole of Aries is the Sun’s exaltation sign. Ten degrees is the point of deepest exaltation — the maximum of a curve, not the edge of a box. A Sun at 9° Aries and a Sun at 25° Aries are both exalted; the first is more so.

Mūlatrikoṇa, and why a planet’s own sign is not uniform

Verses 51 to 54 do something subtler. Each planet owns one or two signs. Within one of them, a portion is singled out as Mūlatrikoṇa — literally the root trine, and practically the stretch where the planet is close to its best.

GrahaMūlatrikoṇaThe rest of that sign
SunLeo 0°–20°Leo 20°–30°, own sign
MoonTaurus 4°–30°Taurus 0°–3° is exaltation
MarsAries 0°–12°Aries 12°–30°, own sign
MercuryVirgo 16°–20°Virgo 0°–15° exaltation, 20°–30° own
JupiterSagittarius 0°–10°Sagittarius 10°–30°, own sign
VenusLibra 0°–15°Libra 15°–30°, own sign
SaturnAquarius 0°–20°Aquarius 20°–30°, own sign

Two things in that table repay attention.

The Moon is the odd one out. Its Mūlatrikoṇa is in Taurus, which is not a sign it owns at all — Taurus belongs to Venus. The Moon owns Cancer, and Cancer carries no Mūlatrikoṇa portion. So the Moon in Cancer is simply in its own sign, throughout, and the Moon in Taurus is exalted for three degrees and Mūlatrikoṇa for the remaining twenty-seven.

Mercury is the other. Virgo is the only sign where a planet both exalts and rules, which is why it ends up cut into three: exaltation to 15°, Mūlatrikoṇa from 16° to 20°, own sign for the last ten degrees.

And a general point that catches almost everyone: where a planet owns two signs, only one of them carries the Mūlatrikoṇa. Mars in Scorpio is in its own sign and nothing more. Jupiter in Pisces, likewise. Saturn in Capricorn, likewise.

What dignity is a claim about

Here is where care is needed, and it is the reason this unit is more than a table.

Dignity measures how fully a planet can express its own nature. That is all it measures. It says nothing about whether the expression will be welcome.

An exalted Mars is a Mars operating at full capacity. Mars’s capacities include courage, decisiveness and the will to fight — and they also include conflict, injury, severance and force. Exaltation makes all of that more available, not less. It does not domesticate the planet.

Run the same reasoning on a benefic and you get the mirror image. A debilitated Jupiter is not a benefic that has become harmful; it is a benefic that cannot deliver much. The protection is promised and does not arrive.

What to do with this

The practical habit to build, starting now and continuing for the rest of the course, is simple: never say where a planet is without also saying what condition it is in. “Venus in the seventh” is half an observation. “Exalted Venus in the seventh” and “debilitated Venus in the seventh” are two entirely different charts, and the difference is one word.

There is one more layer to a planet’s condition — how it gets on with the lord of the sign it is sitting in — and that is the last unit of the week.

While you read, watch for: Six verses, and they are the densest six in the chapter. Verses 49–50 give exaltation with its exact degree and derive debilitation from it. Verses 51–54 then divide each planet's own sign into a Mūlatrikoṇa portion and a remainder. Read them with a pen — you are going to want to write the table out yourself.

Verse 49–50

49-50. Exaltation and Debilitation of Planets: Aries, Taurus, Capricorn, Virgo, Cancer, Pisces and Libra have been spoken of, respectively from the Sun on, as the signs of exaltation of the seven planets. The deepest exaltation degrees in these planets are respectively 10, 3, 28, 15, 5, 27 and 20. And in the 7th sign from the said exaltation sign each planet has its debilitation to the same degrees.

Verse 51–54

51-54. The Mool Trikona Signs of Planets: In the sign Leo the first 20 degrees are the Sun's Mooltrikona while the rest portion is called his own house. In the same way in Taurus sign the first 3. degrees are the Moon's exaltation portion and the rest is her Mooltrikona. In Aries, the first 12 degrees are the Mooltrikona of Mars and the rest portion is his own house. For Mercury, in Virgo the first 15 degrees form his exaltation zone, the next 5 his Mooltrikona and the last 10 his own house. In the sign Sagittarius, the first 10 degrees are Jupiter's Mooltrikona and the rest, his own house. In the sign, Libra the first 15 degrees are Venus's Mooltrikona the rest his own house and Saturn has his Mooltrikona in the sign Aquarius upto 20 degrees and in the rest his own house.

Give the exaltation sign and the deep-exaltation degree for each of the seven grahas.

Write your answer down before opening the explanation.

Show the answer and why

Answer: Sun — Aries 10°. Moon — Taurus 3°. Mars — Capricorn 28°. Mercury — Virgo 15°. Jupiter — Cancer 5°. Venus — Pisces 27°. Saturn — Libra 20°.

Verses 49–50 give the signs in planetary order and then the degrees in the same order, which is why they must be read as a pair — read separately, the degrees are a meaningless row of numbers. Note that the degree is the point of deepest exaltation, not a threshold: the whole sign is the exaltation sign, and the named degree is where the quality is at its maximum.

Without consulting any table, where is Saturn debilitated, and at what degree?

Write your answer down before opening the explanation.

Show the answer and why

Answer: Aries, at 20°.

Verse 50 gives you this without listing it: debilitation is the seventh sign from exaltation, at the same degree. Saturn exalts in Libra at 20°, so it falls in Aries at 20°. This is worth doing deliberately for all seven, because a rule you can run is worth more than a table you can recite, and because it is a genuine check on the table — if a printed debilitation list ever fails this test, the list is wrong.

Comparison · 3

Mercury in Virgo at 8° and Mercury in Virgo at 18°. Same planet, same sign. What is the difference?

Write your answer down before opening the explanation.

Show the answer and why

Answer: At 8° Mercury is exalted; at 18° it is in Mūlatrikoṇa. Virgo is divided: the first 15° are Mercury's exaltation, the next 5° its Mūlatrikoṇa, and the last 10° its own sign.

Mercury is the only graha that exalts in a sign it also rules, which makes Virgo the most finely subdivided sign in the scheme and the one worth knowing exactly. It is also the clearest demonstration that dignity is a degree judgment and not a sign judgment. "Mercury in Virgo" is not an answer. "Mercury at 18° Virgo" is.

Interpretation · 4

A student says: "Mars is exalted in this chart, so this will be a good area of life." What is wrong with that sentence?

Write your answer down before opening the explanation.

Show the answer and why

Answer: Exaltation says Mars will act strongly and characteristically. It does not say the result will be pleasant.

Dignity measures how fully a planet can express its own nature, not whether you will enjoy the expression. Mars is a natural malefic; an exalted Mars is a more effective Mars, and Mars's effectiveness includes conflict, force and severance as readily as courage and drive. The same logic runs the other way: a debilitated benefic is not a good thing, it is a benefic that cannot deliver. Hold this line firmly, because it is the one that stops dignity from collapsing into "good planet, bad planet" — which is what happens to almost everyone at some point in their first year.

Application · 5

Classify each of these: (a) Jupiter at 2° Sagittarius, (b) the Sun at 25° Leo, (c) Venus at 27° Virgo, (d) the Moon at 2° Taurus, (e) Saturn at 25° Capricorn.

Write your answer down before opening the explanation.

Show the answer and why

Answer: (a) Mūlatrikoṇa — the first 10° of Sagittarius. (b) Own sign — the first 20° of Leo are Mūlatrikoṇa, the rest own. (c) Debilitated — Virgo is the seventh from Pisces. (d) Exalted — the first 3° of Taurus. (e) Own sign — Saturn's Mūlatrikoṇa is in Aquarius, not Capricorn, so Capricorn is simply its own sign throughout.

Item (e) is the one that catches people. Saturn owns two signs, and only one of them carries the Mūlatrikoṇa portion. The same is true of every double-ruler: Mars owns Aries and Scorpio but is Mūlatrikoṇa only in Aries; Jupiter owns Sagittarius and Pisces but is Mūlatrikoṇa only in Sagittarius; Venus owns Taurus and Libra but is Mūlatrikoṇa only in Libra; Mercury owns Gemini and Virgo but is Mūlatrikoṇa only in Virgo. Item (d) is worth a second look too: 2° Taurus is exaltation, but 4° Taurus would be Mūlatrikoṇa, and the whole difference is two degrees.

Chart A is the reason this chart was chosen. It is unusual — five of the seven grahas that the source places are in exaltation, which is nearly unheard of and is precisely why the tradition preserved it. That makes it an ideal place to see dignity working without any noise around it.

  1. Go through the six placed grahas one at a time and state the dignity of each from verses 49–54 alone, before reading the condition column in the table.
  2. Check yourself against the table. Then check the internal consistency: for each exalted planet, name the sign it would be debilitated in, and confirm it is the seventh from the exaltation sign.
  3. The Moon is in Cancer here. Is that exaltation, Mūlatrikoṇa, or own sign? Say why — this one catches almost everybody the first time.
  4. Now your own chart. Write out all nine grahas with their sign, degree and dignity. Keep the sheet; you will add a column to it in every week from here to Week 11.

In which sign is Jupiter debilitated?

Answer: Capricorn.

Jupiter exalts in Cancer; the seventh from Cancer is Capricorn. If you derived it rather than recalled it, that is the better outcome.

Why does Parashara bother to distinguish a Mūlatrikoṇa portion from the rest of a planet's own sign at all?

Write your answer down before opening the explanation.

Show the answer and why

Answer: Because a planet is not equally at home everywhere in a sign it owns. Mūlatrikoṇa marks the portion where it operates at close to its best, short of exaltation.

There is a hierarchy here rather than a set of labels: exaltation, then Mūlatrikoṇa, then own sign, then friendly, neutral, enemy, debilitation. Verses 59–60 in the next unit put actual proportions on that hierarchy, which is when the distinction stops being a curiosity and starts changing an answer.

Someone asks you where BPHS states the exaltation degrees. What do you tell them?

Write your answer down before opening the explanation.

Answer: Chapter 3, verses 49–50 — a single sentence pair near the end of the chapter.

It is worth registering how little space the most-used rule in Jyotish occupies. Two verses. Ten times that is spent on the correspondence tables you read at speed in the last unit. Word count in BPHS is a poor guide to importance, and knowing that is part of learning to read it.

Comparison · 4

Is a planet in its own sign in a better condition than a planet in a friendly sign?

Write your answer down before opening the explanation.

Show the answer and why

Answer: Yes — own sign ranks above friendly in the hierarchy.

The order runs exaltation, Mūlatrikoṇa, own sign, friendly, neutral, enemy, debilitated. You will meet the arithmetic behind this in the next unit. For now, the ordering itself is the thing to carry — and note that it is one continuous scale, not two categories with a line down the middle.

What you carry forward

Two things grow across the whole course. This unit adds to both.

To your chart-analysis process

  • Exaltation: Sun–Aries 10°, Moon–Taurus 3°, Mars–Capricorn 28°, Mercury–Virgo 15°, Jupiter–Cancer 5°, Venus–Pisces 27°, Saturn–Libra 20°. Debilitation is the 7th sign from each, at the same degree.
  • Mūlatrikoṇa: Sun–Leo 0–20°, Moon–Taurus 4–30°, Mars–Aries 0–12°, Mercury–Virgo 16–20°, Jupiter–Sagittarius 0–10°, Venus–Libra 0–15°, Saturn–Aquarius 0–20°.
  • Only one of a double-ruler's two signs carries its Mūlatrikoṇa portion.
  • Dignity is a statement about how fully a planet can act, not about whether you will like the result.

By now you should be able to

  • State the exaltation sign and deep-exaltation degree of each of the seven grahas
  • Derive any planet's debilitation from its exaltation without looking it up
  • Distinguish Mūlatrikoṇa from own sign, and say why the distinction exists
  • Judge the dignity of a planet given its sign and degree
  • Say what dignity is a statement about, and what it is not
