Pratyantardaśā, and How Far Down to Go
The third, fourth and fifth levels of subdivision — and the judgment about where precision stops meaning anything.

Why this matters
Parashara supplies periods lasting hours. The arithmetic that produces them is flawless and it will keep producing them however far you go. Nothing in the mathematics tells you where to stop, so the limit has to come from somewhere else — from the birth time you actually have, and from how far a chain of inference can be extended before it stops carrying anything. This is the unit where the course teaches judgment rather than technique, and it matters more than any table in the week.

Chapter 63 gives Pratyantardaśās. Chapter 64 gives Sūkṣma. Chapter 65 gives Prāṇa — periods of a few hours.
The arithmetic is identical at every level, and it will keep working however far down you go. That is the problem this unit is about.
The ladder

One rule throughout: parent period × lord’s years ÷ 120. Chapter 63 verse 1 and Chapter 65 verse 1 state it in identical terms.
And the results chapters exist for all five levels, which means the text itself does not mark a stopping point. The judgment is yours.
Where the limit comes from
Not from the mathematics. The mathematics is happy to subdivide forever.
It comes from two places.
The birth time you actually have. Everything in the sequence descends from the Moon’s position at birth. An error of ten minutes moves every boundary in the sequence — not just the first — and the finer the level, the larger that displacement is relative to the period itself.
A Pratyantardaśā of three months, from a birth time good to five minutes, has boundaries uncertain by a few days. Usable.
A Prāṇadaśā of six hours, from the same birth time, has boundaries uncertain by longer than the period lasts. Not usable, and not made usable by careful arithmetic.
The inference chain. This is the subtler limit and it is worth more thought.
A reading starts with a natal promise — a statement about what this chart is set up to give. That statement is already approximate. It then gets narrowed through a Mahādaśā, an Antardaśā, a Pratyantardaśā. At each narrowing, the claim gets more specific while the evidence supporting it stays the same.
At some point the specificity exceeds what the original statement can bear. Not because a step was wrong, but because you cannot extract more information from a chain than went into it.
Have a stopping rule
A practitioner without an explicit stopping rule gets pushed downward, every time, by clients who want a more specific answer. And clients always want a more specific answer.
So decide in advance, on the basis of the data rather than the question. A defensible version:
- Birth time from a document, to the minute — Pratyantardaśā.
- To five or ten minutes — Antardaśā, with Pratyantardaśā as a soft indication only.
- To the nearest hour, or family memory — Mahādaśā at most, and say so.
- “Morning” — do not subdivide at all. With that much uncertainty the Moon may cross a nakshatra boundary, which changes the starting lord and makes the entire sequence different for life. Offer natal judgment instead, which is largely robust to the same error.
Your rule may differ from that and it should be yours. What matters is that you have one, that it refers to the birth data, and that you can state it to someone who asks.
Is computing a Prāṇadaśā wrong?
No. Compute whatever you like.
The distinction that keeps this honest is between computing and asserting. Parashara gives these levels; they are part of the system; a course that pretended otherwise would be editing the source to suit modern scruples, which is exactly what this course has declined to do with longevity and with the Ariṣṭa material.
What the course does not do is train you to make claims at a resolution your inputs cannot support.
Look at the finer subdivisions if you want. Notice whether they cohere with what you already concluded. Let them raise or lower your confidence slightly. Do not build on them, and do not state them.

पृथक् स्वस्वदशामानैर्हन्यादन्तर्दशामितिम् ।
भजेत्सर्वदशायोगैः फलं प्रत्यन्तरं क्रमात् ॥ १ ॥
1: The Antardasa years of a planet be multipled by the Maḥadasa years of each planet separately and the product then be divided by 120 (total of the Mahadasas of all planets) the resultant will indicate the Pratyantardasa of each planet.
विवादो वित्तहानिश्च दारार्तिः शिरसि व्यथा ।
रव्यन्तरे बुधैर्ज्ञेयं तस्य प्रत्यन्तरे फलम् ॥ २ ॥
2 : Pratyantardasa of the SUN, in the Antardasa of the SUN Controversies, depletion of Wealth, sufferings of wife, ailments affecting head etc.

मतिवृद्धिर्महापूज्यः सुखं बन्धुजनैः सह ।

भवेत्कल्याणसम्पत्ती राजवित्तसमागमः ।

13 : Pratyantardasa of the RAHU in the Antardasa of the MOON-Acquisition of property, gain of wealth from Ruler (Government); should Rahu be aspected by or conjoined with the malefic planets, it will cause fear of early death.
वस्त्रलाभो महातेजो ब्रह्मज्ञानं च सद्गुरोः ।
राज्यालंकरणावाप्तिर्गुरुप्रत्यन्तरे फलम् ॥ १४ ॥
14: Pratyantardasa of the JUPITER in the Antardasa of the MOON-Gain of clothes, increase of glory, gaining of virtuous knowledge from the proceptor, acquisition of kingship and ornaments etc.
दुर्दिने लभते पीडां वातपित्ताद्विशेषतः ।
धनधान्ययशोहानिः शनिप्रत्यन्तरे भवेत् ॥ १५ ॥
15 : Pratantardasa of the SATURN in the Antardasa of the MOON-Distress through bilious and gastric diseases (especially in bad days), loss of wealth, prosperity and fame etc.
पुत्रजन्महयप्राप्तिर्विद्यालाभो महोन्नतिः ।
शुक्लवस्त्रान्नलाभश्च बुधप्रत्यन्तरे भवेत् ॥ १६ ॥
16: Pratyantardasa of MERCURY in the Antardasa of the MOON - Birth of a child, procuring a horse, attainment of education, developments at a large scale, acquistion of clothes and food grains etc.
ब्राह्मणेन समं युद्धमपमृत्युः सुखक्षयः ।
सर्वत्र जायते क्लेश: केतोः प्रत्यन्तरे भवेत् ॥ १७ ॥
17: Pratyantardasa of KETU in the Antardasa of the MOON Conflicts with the Brahmins, early death, degeration of comforts, distress in all spheres etc.
धनलाभो महत्सौख्यं कन्याजन्म सुभोजनम् ।
प्रीतिश्च सर्वलोकेभ्यो भृगुप्रत्यन्तरे विधोः ॥ १८ ॥
18: Pratyantardasa of VENUS in the Antardasa of the MOON Gain of wealth, great Jubilation, birth of a daughter, gain of decent meals, affection with all etc.
अन्नागमो वस्त्रलाभ: शत्रुहानिः सुखागमः ।
सर्वत्र विजयप्राप्ति सूर्यप्रत्यन्तरे विधोः ॥ १९ ॥
19 Pratyantardasa of the SUN in the Antardasa of the MOON-Acquisition of food grains and clothes, vanquinshing enemies, ushering of comforts, triumph in all frontiers etc.
शत्रुभीतिं कलिं घोरं रक्तस्रावं मृतेर्भयम् ।
कुजस्यान्तर्दशायां च कुजप्रत्यन्तरे वदेत् ॥ २० ॥
20 : Pratyantardasa of MARS in the Antardasa of MARS-Fear from enemies, aggravation of quarrels, blood infection and fear of early death.
बन्धनं राजभंगश्च धनहानिः कुभोजनम् ।
कलह: शत्रुभीर्नित्यं राहुप्रत्यन्तरे भवेत् ॥ २१ ॥
21 : Pratyantardasa of RAHU in the Antardasa of MARS - Imprisonment, depletion of wealth and loss of kingdom, insipid food, disputes and danger from the enemies etc.
मतिनाशस्तथा दुःखं सन्तापः कलहो भवेत् ।
विफलं चिन्तितं सर्वं गुरोः प्रत्यन्तरे भवेत् ॥ २२ ॥
22: Pratyantardasa of JUPITER in the Antardasa of MARS - Degeneration of wisdom (middle of), grief, agony, mental anguish etc.
स्वामिनाशस्तथा पीडा धनहानिर्महाभयम् ।
वैकल्यं कलहस्त्रासो शने: प्रत्यन्तरे भवेत् ॥ २३ ॥
23: Pratyantardasa of SATURN in the Antardasa of MARS - Annihilation of the Master, pains, loss of money, frightfulness, destitute, disputes and terror etc.
सर्वथा बुद्धिनाशश्च धनहानिर्ज्वरस्तनौ ।
वस्त्रान्नसुहृदां नाशो बुधप्रत्यन्तरे भवेत् ॥ २४ ॥
24 : Pratyantardasa of MERCURY in the Antardasa of MARS Degeneration of wisdom (intellect).
आलस्यं च शिर:पीडा पापरोगोऽपमृत्युकृत् ।

25 : Pratyantardasa of KETU in the Antardasa of MARS - Inertia, physical pains, diseases generating bad effects, fear of early death, danger from the Ruler, injury inflicted by the weapon etc.
चाण्डालात्सकंटस्त्रासो राजशस्त्रभयं भवेत् ।
अतिसारोऽथ वमनं भृगो: प्रत्यन्तरे भवेत् ॥ २६ ॥
26 : Pratyantardasa of VENUS in the Antardasa of MARS - Trouble from Chandalas (चण्डाल), terror, fear from the king, danger from weapons, diseases like dysentery and vomiting.
भूमिलाभोऽर्थसम्पत्तिः सन्तोषो मित्रसंगतिः ।
सर्वत्र सुखमाप्नोति रखेः प्रत्यन्तरे जनः ॥ २७ ॥

जलभीतिस्तथा चौर्य बन्धनं कलहो भवेत् ।

41 : Pratyantardasa of KETU in the Atardasa of JUPITER - Fear of drowning, theft, imprisonment, disputes, apprehension of pre mature death.
नानाविद्यार्थसम्प्राप्तिर्हे मवस्त्रविभूषणम् ।
लभते क्षेमसन्तोषं भृगो: प्रत्यन्तरे जनः ॥ ४२ ॥
42: Pratyantardasa of VENUS in the Antardasa of JUPITER Acquisition of various literary knowledge (learnings), gain of gold, clothes, Jewellery, contentments over welfare etc.
नृपाल्लाभस्तथा मित्रात्पितृतो मातृतोऽपि वा ।
सर्वत्र लभते पूजां रखे: प्रत्यन्तरे जनः ॥ ४३ ॥
43 : Benefit from the ruler, friends, father and mother; veneration from all over.
सर्वदुःखविमोक्षश्च मुक्तालामो हयस्य च ।
सिद्ध्यन्ति सर्वकार्याणि विधा:प्रत्यन्तरे द्विज ! ॥ ४४ ॥

शस्त्रभीतिर्गुदे पीडा वहिमान्द्यमजीर्णता ।
पीडा शत्रुकृता भूरिर्भीमप्रत्यन्तरे भवेत् ॥ ४५ ॥

1 : The Pratyantardasa years of a planet be multiplied by the Mahadasa years of each planet separately and the product then be divided by 120 (total of the Mahadasa of all planets), the resultant will indicate the Sookshmadasa of each planet.
निजभूमिपरित्यागो प्राणनाशभयं भवेत् ।
स्थाननाशो महाहानिः निजसूक्ष्मगते रवौ ॥ २ ॥

वातपित्तप्रकोपश्च श्लेष्मोद्रेकस्तु दारुणः ।
रसव्याधिकृतं शूलं गुरोः सूक्ष्मगते रवौ ॥ ४३ ॥
43 : Sookshmadasa of the SUN in the Pratyantardasa of JUPITER: Calamity of (all the three humours) wind, bile and phlegm (Vaata, Pitta and Kapha), severe pains due to aggrevation of phlegmatic diseases to a critical state.

ऐश्वर्यमायुधाभ्यासः पुत्रलाभोऽभिषेचनम् ।

राजतेजोऽधिकारत्वं स्वगृहे जायते कलिः ।
किञ्चित्पीडा स्वदेहोत्या शनेः सूक्ष्मगते रवौ ॥ ५१ ॥
51: Sookshmadasa of the SUN in the Pratyantardasa of SATURN: Kingly radiance, authority, quarrel in the family, slight pains in the body.
स्फीतबुद्धिर्महारम्भो मन्दतेजा बहुव्ययः ।
स्त्रीपुत्रैश्च समं सौख्यं शनेः सूक्ष्मगते विधौ ॥ ५२ ॥

रिपोर्विरोधः सम्पत्तिः सहसा राजवैभवम् ।

1 : The Sookshmadasa years of a planet be multiplied by the Mahadasa years of each planet separately and the product then be divided by 120 (total of the Mahadasas of all planets), the resultant will indicate the Pranadasa of each planet.
पौश्चल्यं विषजा बाधा चौराग्निनृपजं भयम् ।
कष्टं सूक्ष्मदशाकाले रवौ प्राणदशां गते ॥ २ ॥
2 : Pranadasa of the SUN in the Sookshmadasa of the Sun : Tendency of sodomy, danger of poison, theft, fear from the Ruler, physical distress.
सुखं भोजनसम्पत्तिः संस्कारो नृपवैभवम् ।

दृष्टिक्षोभो मतिभ्रंशो विधोः प्राणगतेऽप्यगौ ॥ १३ ॥
13 : Pranadasa of RAHU in the Sookshmadasa of the MOON: Danger from snake, unhappy incident of evil spirit, impairment of eye sight, fall in wisdom or intelligence.
धर्मवृद्धिः क्षमाप्राप्तिर्देवब्राह्मणपूजनम् ।
सौभाग्यं प्रियदृष्टिश्च चन्द्रप्राणगते गुरौ ॥ १४ ॥
14 : Pranadasa of JUPITER in the Sookshmadasa of the MOON: Devoutness towards religion, forgiveness, devotion towards deities and Brahmins, increase in fortune, meetings with the loved ones.
सहसा देहपतनं शत्रूपद्रववेदना ।
अन्धत्वं च धनप्राप्तिश्चन्द्रप्राणगते शनौ ॥ १५ ॥
15 : Prandasa of SATURN in the Sookshmadasa of the MOON: Pains in the entire body, distress due to unhappy incident with the enemy, partial blindness (gradual impairment of sight) acquisition of wealth etc.
चामरच्छत्रसम्प्राप्ती राज्यलाभो नृपात्ततः ।
समत्वं सर्वभूतेषु चन्द्रप्राणगते बुधे ॥ १६ ॥

पुत्रदारवियोगश्च चन्द्रप्राणगते ध्वजे ॥ १७ ॥

देशत्यागो महाभीतिश्चन्द्रप्राणगते रवौ ॥ १९ ॥

Answer: It varies by lord, from about two months to about five.
Work it: the Jupiter Antardaśā in a Saturn Mahādaśā is 2.53 years. A Venus Pratyantardaśā within it is 2.53 × 20 ÷ 120 ≈ 0.42 years, about five months. A Sun Pratyantardaśā is 2.53 × 6 ÷ 120 ≈ 0.13 years, about six weeks. That range — weeks to months — is why the third level is the one practice actually uses: it is fine enough to be useful and coarse enough to survive ordinary birth-time error.

Answer: The birth time would need to be accurate to seconds, and the inference chain from natal promise would need to remain intact through five levels of subdivision.
Neither holds in practice, and the first essentially never does. Hospital records give minutes at best. But notice that the second condition is the more interesting one: even with a perfect birth time, the question is whether a statement about a chart's promise, narrowed through five proportional divisions, still says anything specific about a particular Tuesday afternoon. Answer: Not at all. With an uncertainty of hours, even the Mahādaśā sequence may have the wrong starting lord.
Trace it: several hours of uncertainty moves the Moon by a degree or more, which can cross a nakshatra boundary and change the first daśā lord entirely — after which the whole sequence is different for life. The honest response is to say the timing cannot be done from this data and offer natal judgment instead, which is largely robust to the same error. Being able to say "this chart will not support that question" is a real professional skill and it is rarely taught.

The exercise here is not a calculation. It is a judgment about where to stop, and you will make it twice on the same chart with two different assumptions about the birth data.
- Take one documented event on Chart C. Narrow it: Mahādaśā, then Antardaśā, then Pratyantardaśā. Note how the window tightens at each level.
- At each of the three levels, write one sentence answering: does my confidence go up or down when I add this level? Be specific about why.
- Now the crucial part. Chart C's birth time comes from a birth certificate and is recorded to the minute. Suppose instead it were recorded to the nearest fifteen minutes. Work out roughly how much each period boundary would move, and redo your three confidence judgments.
- Then suppose it were 'about three in the morning'. Redo them again.
- Write your conclusion as a rule you would actually use: for a birth time of quality X, I will subdivide to level Y and no further, because…

Answer: Because its periods are weeks to months, which is fine enough to be useful and coarse enough to survive ordinary birth-time uncertainty.
A Pratyantardaśā of three months, computed from a birth time good to five minutes, has boundaries uncertain by a few days. That is a usable statement. The same chain applied to a six-hour Prāṇadaśā gives boundaries uncertain by longer than the period itself, which is not.

The distinction matters and it keeps the position honest. Parashara gives these levels and they are part of the system; a course that pretended otherwise would be editing the source. What the course declines to do is train you to make claims at a resolution the inputs cannot support. Compute what you like; assert what the evidence carries.

Answer: A defensible version: birth time to the minute from a document — Pratyantardaśā. To five or ten minutes — Antardaśā, with Pratyantardaśā as a soft indication only. To the hour or worse — Mahādaśā at most, and say so.
Your version may differ and should be yours. What matters is that you have one, that it refers to the birth data rather than to the question, and that you can state it to someone who asks. A practitioner without a stopping rule will be pushed downward by every client who wants a more specific answer, and clients always want a more specific answer.

Two things grow across the whole course. This unit adds to both.

- **Step 12 (completed) — apply Viṁśottarī timing.** Mahādaśā → Antardaśā → Pratyantardaśā *only where the birth data and the evidence justify it*. State the level you stopped at and why.
To your field manual
- Subdivision levels and scales: Mahādaśā years–decades (Ch. 48–50); Antardaśā months–years (Ch. 53–62); Pratyantardaśā weeks–months (Ch. 63); Sūkṣma days–weeks (Ch. 64); Prāṇa hours (Ch. 65).
- Every level uses the same rule: parent period × lord's years ÷ 120.
- Pratyantardaśā is the practical floor — fine enough to be useful, coarse enough to survive ordinary birth-time error.
- **Precision of arithmetic is not precision of prediction.** A five-level subdivision computed from a birth time wrong by ten minutes is immaculate and meaningless.
- A stopping rule worth using: document to the minute — Pratyantardaśā. Five to ten minutes — Antardaśā, third level as soft indication. Hour or worse — Mahādaśā at most, and say so.
- With hours of uncertainty the STARTING LORD may be wrong. Then no level of the sequence is usable.
- Computing a fine subdivision is fine. Asserting one is the problem.
