Milestone 4 of 5: Blind practice, and the reveal

Blind Practice, and the Reveal

Three prospective statements with the outcome withheld — then the reveal, then the diagnosis. The hardest thing the course asks.

Reading: BPHS 50About 125 min

Assumes you have done: Week 10's Clinic 5 blind item, and units 1 to 5 of this week

Why this matters

Everything you have done so far can be rationalised after the fact. This cannot. You are given a chart and a period and no event; you state what themes were likely activated; then you find out. A wrong reading that is honestly diagnosed is worth more here than a right one that was lucky, and the assessment says so — because the diagnosis is the only part that improves your next reading.

Learn

Everything before this can be rationalised after the fact. This cannot.

The exercise

You are given a chart and a period. You are not given the event.

You state what themes were most likely activated, with a confidence on each. Then you look.

The rule

Write your answer before you look. That is what makes it blind.

After the reveal, diagnose the step rather than defending the answer. That is what makes it useful.

Skip either half and you have performed a retrospective with extra ceremony.

Why this is more informative than everything before it

Week 9 established the epistemics and this is where they bite.

A retrospective can always be constructed. A chart contains twelve houses, nine grahas, four kinds of condition and dozens of connections — enough that some account fits most events. Finding one is not much of an achievement, and the construction pressure works for you: you know the destination, so you notice the factors that lead there.

Remove the destination and the same chart supports several accounts, none of them obviously preferable.

That is the honest situation, and it is the one you will be in with a real client who asks what is coming.

Diagnosing a miss

Five candidate steps. When a blind statement is wrong, one of these produced it.

Step 4 — you identified the wrong houses for the question.

Step 5 — you misread what the lords carry, or where they sit.

Step 8 — you misassessed condition: overrated a dignity, missed an affliction, ignored a strength measure.

Step 11 — the natal promise was too generous, too broad, or rested on a factor that looked stronger than it was.

Step 12 — you read the period through the planet’s name rather than through what it rules.

Grade the confidence, not the hit rate

A blind statement with three claims. One rated strong, two rated weak.

If the strong one landed and the weak ones did not, the reading worked. The confidence grading did exactly what it exists for.

If the weak one landed and the strong one missed, the reading did not work — even though the same number of claims were correct.

That distinction matters more than the score, and it is the one most people skip. You are not testing whether you can be right. You are testing whether you know how confident to be.

The move to catch yourself making

After a reveal, there is one move that is always available and never useful: explaining why you were nearly right.

“Well, Saturn does relate to that in a sense.”

That sentence can be constructed about any period and any event. It feels like analysis, produces no information, and leaves you precisely where you started.

If you catch yourself doing it, stop and name the step instead.

Vagueness is a failure too

If all three of your statements came out as “a period of change and growth”, you did not attempt the exercise.

A statement that cannot be wrong cannot be right either, and producing one is a way of avoiding the test while appearing to take it.

It is also diagnosable, usually at Step 11 or Step 14: a promise stated too broadly to be checkable, or a refusal to commit a confidence level. Both are fixable and both are worth catching now rather than in front of someone.

The pattern across the three

The individual results matter less than what they have in common.

One miss tells you almost nothing. Everybody misses.

Three misses that all trace to Step 11 tell you something specific and actionable about how you state promises.

Three misses tracing to three different steps tell you that you are still learning, which at the end of a thirteen-week course is the expected and correct position.

Write down which step failed most. That is your failure mode, it is the single most useful thing this course can tell you about your own practice, and the fourth part of this week’s assessment asks you to write it up.

Next: the final clinic, the assessment, and what to do after this.

The Dasa of the 9th lord if conjoined with the 4th lord and the Dasa of the 10th lord if posited in the 5th house are also the benefic Dasas. The Dasas of the Trine lords occupying Angles (kendras) position or the Angle lords located in the Trine houses, also render good results and these Dasas according to the Astrological Savants are said to be extremely auspicious.

Verse 14–17½

14-17 ½ : The visionaries of 'Kala' have described the Dasas of the 6th, the 8th or the 12th lord as auspicious if they have the conjunction of the lord of Trines. The Dasa of the planets having the conjunction of the Trines lords posited in Angles or Angles lords posited in Trines is also favourable. If the Ascendant occupies the 9th house or the 9th lord occupies the Ascendant, in which case, the Dasas of both these lords bring happiness and comforts. The Dasa of the 10th lord posited in the Ascendant or Dasa of the Ascendant posited in the 10th house will certainly bring gains from the king, (Government, authorities etc.)

त्रिषडायगतानां च त्रिषडायाधिपैर्युजाम् ॥ १८ ॥

मारकस्थानगतानां च मारकेशयुजामपि ॥ १९ ॥

रन्ध्रस्थानगतानां च दशाऽनिष्टफलप्रदा ।

Verse 18–20

18-20: The Dasa of the auspicious planets posited in the 3rd, the 6th or the 11th house or their lords or the planets connected with their lords, manifest unfavourable results. The Dasa of a planet combining with lords of the 2nd or the 7th houses (Maraka Sthana) and also posited therein or the Dasa of a planet placed in the 8th house is considered inauspicious and will give unfavourable results.

In this way, with the inter-relationship and the combination of the houses and their planetary lords, the favourable and unfavourable results of the Dasas of the planets be ascertained.

Practice

Understanding · 1

Why is blind practice more informative than retrospective work?

Write your answer down before opening the explanation.

Show the answer and why

Answer: Because a retrospective can always be constructed. A chart contains enough factors that some account fits most events, and building one feels like confirmation.

Week 9 established this and this unit is where it bites. The construction pressure in a retrospective works for you: you know the destination, so you notice the factors that lead there. Remove the destination and the same chart supports several accounts, none obviously preferable. That is the honest situation and it is the one you will be in with a real client.

Interpretation · 2

Your blind statement was wrong. Name the five candidate steps.

Write your answer down before opening the explanation.

Show the answer and why

Answer: Step 4 — wrong houses identified. Step 5 — lordships misread. Step 8 — condition misassessed. Step 11 — the natal promise was too generous, too broad, or rested on a weak factor. Step 12 — the period read through the planet's name rather than its holdings.

Five candidates and one of them is far more common than the others. In every clinic in this course, the most frequent failure has been Step 11: a promise stated so broadly that it could not be wrong, or resting on a factor that looked stronger than it was. Check that one first.

Interpretation · 3

What is the difference between a wrong reading and a wrong method?

Write your answer down before opening the explanation.

Show the answer and why

Answer: A wrong reading fails at an identifiable step. A wrong method fails systematically, in the same way, across many charts.

One miss tells you almost nothing. Three misses that all trace to Step 11 tell you something specific about how you state promises. Ten misses that trace to different steps tell you you are still learning. This is why the pattern across the three items matters more than any individual result.

Interpretation · 4

Your statement was partly right. Is that a success?

Write your answer down before opening the explanation.

Show the answer and why

Answer: It depends entirely on whether the right part was the part you were confident about.

A reading with three claims, where the one you rated strong was correct and the two you rated weak were not, is working well — the confidence grading did its job. A reading where the weak claim landed and the strong one missed is working badly, even though the same number of claims were correct. Grade the confidence, not the hit rate.

Interpretation · 5

Why does the assessment value an honestly diagnosed miss above a lucky hit?

Write your answer down before opening the explanation.

Show the answer and why

Answer: Because only the diagnosis improves the next reading.

A lucky hit teaches nothing and reinforces whatever you happened to do. A diagnosed miss tells you which step to work on. Over a hundred charts, the practitioner who diagnoses will be far better than the one who scores well early — which is why the fourth part of this week's assessment is an error-analysis write-up rather than a hit rate.

Apply it to a chart

Three blind items. The rule is simple and it is the whole exercise: write your answer before you look, and after the reveal diagnose the step rather than defending the answer.

  1. Item one — Chart C, Rahu Mahādaśā, Mercury Antardaśā, 1989 to 1992. Do not look at the timeline. Write the natal promise for whatever those lords rule, then state the two or three themes most likely to have been activated, with a confidence on each. Then reveal.
  2. Item two — Chart C, Jupiter Mahādaśā, Mercury Antardaśā, 2004 to 2006. Same procedure.
  3. Item three — Chart B, Sun Mahādaśā, Saturn Antardaśā, mid-1919 to mid-1920. Same procedure. This one is harder because the chart is older and the record is denser.
  4. For each item, after the reveal: was your statement right, partly right, or wrong? Then — the actual exercise — which step produced the error? Name it: Step 4, 5, 8, 11 or 12.
  5. Across all three, is there a pattern in which step fails? Write it down. That is your most common failure mode and it is the single most useful thing this course can tell you about your own practice.

Check your understanding

Answer from memory first. Looking back at the reading before you try turns a memory test into a copying exercise.

Recall · 1

What is the rule for a blind item?

Write your answer down before opening the explanation.

Show the answer and why

Answer: Write your answer before you look. After the reveal, diagnose the step rather than defending the answer.

Both halves. The first is what makes it blind; the second is what makes it useful. Skipping either turns the exercise into a retrospective with extra steps.

Interpretation · 2

What is the single most tempting move after a reveal, and why is it useless?

Write your answer down before opening the explanation.

Show the answer and why

Answer: Explaining why you were nearly right. It is useless because it is available for every wrong answer ever produced.

"Well, Saturn does relate to that in a sense" can be said about any period and any event. The move feels like analysis, produces no information, and leaves you exactly where you started. If you catch yourself doing it, stop and name the step instead.

Understanding · 3

Why does this unit use Chart C for two of the three items?

Write your answer down before opening the explanation.

Show the answer and why

Answer: Because it has birth-certificate data recorded to the minute and a dense, well-dated public record — the combination blind practice needs.

Blind work requires a timeline you did not choose, dated independently of the reading. Chart C exists in this course for exactly this. Chart B is used for the third item because a second chart tests whether your failure mode is general or specific to one nativity.

Application · 4

All three of your statements were vague enough to be unfalsifiable. What does that tell you?

Write your answer down before opening the explanation.

Show the answer and why

Answer: That you avoided the exercise — and that vagueness is itself a diagnosable failure, usually at Step 11 or Step 14.

A statement that cannot be wrong cannot be right either. If your blind answers were "a period of change and growth", you produced something no reveal could test. The fix is at Step 11: a promise stated specifically enough to be checkable, and a confidence level that commits.

What you carry forward

Two things grow across the whole course. This unit adds to both.

To your chart-analysis process

  • **Step 14 (extended) — judge confidence.** After a reveal, check whether the claims you rated strong were the ones that landed. Grade the confidence, not the hit rate.

See the process so far →

To your field manual

  • Blind rule: write the answer before you look; after the reveal, diagnose the step, do not defend the answer.
  • Five candidate failure steps: 4 (wrong houses), 5 (lordships misread), 8 (condition misassessed), 11 (promise too generous or too broad), 12 (period read by planet name).
  • **Step 11 is the most common failure by a wide margin.** Check it first.
  • A statement that cannot be wrong cannot be right. Vagueness is a diagnosable failure, usually at Step 11 or 14.
  • Grade the confidence, not the hit rate: did the claims you rated strong land, and the ones you rated weak miss?
  • One miss tells you nothing. Three misses tracing to the same step tell you your failure mode.

See the field manual →

By now you should be able to

  • Produce a prospective statement about a period without knowing the outcome
  • Diagnose a miss against the fifteen steps rather than rationalising it
  • Distinguish a wrong reading from a wrong method
  • Say what your own most common failure mode is
