Week 5 — Strength, Karakas, and the Advanced Interpretive Tools

Weeks 3 and 4 taught you to say what a chart contains. This week teaches you to weigh it. Every chapter here answers the same question - how much does this actually count? - for aspects, for planets, for houses, and for significations.

What you should be able to do by the end

Given two chart factors that point in opposite directions, decide which one carries more weight, and say why in terms the source supports.

This is the skill that separates a chart reader from someone looking things up.

The central idea of the week, and one of the most important in the course, is that strength, benefic nature and dignity are three different things. Beginners collapse them constantly. A strong malefic is more effectively malefic, not less. An exalted planet can be weak in Shadbala. Hold them apart and a great deal that looked contradictory in BPHS turns out to be consistent.

Shadbala itself is understood, not computed. You need to know what the six strengths measure and why; the arithmetic belongs to software. What does deserve real attention is Upapada, which is small in the text and large in practice - Week 13’s marriage questions lean on it heavily - and Argala, which is genuinely difficult and almost always taught badly.
