Week 6 · Unit 1 · Yogas, Wealth, Longevity and Condition
Milestone 1 of 4: Good for you, bad for you
Good For You, Bad For You
Chapter 36's four-tier framework — how a planet's lordships decide whether it helps or harms in this particular chart.
Assumes you have done: The lordship map from Week 4, and the natural benefic/malefic classification from Week 1
Why this matters
This is the most practically decisive chapter in Volume 1, and it converts a question you have been able to answer since Week 4 — which houses does this planet rule? — into one you have not — is this planet good or bad for this person? It will change conclusions you reached last week. It also settles, properly and in Parashara's own terms, the "evil houses" question that Chapter 13 left open in Week 3.
Learn
Since Week 4 you have been able to say which houses a planet rules. This chapter tells you what that means.
The framework
Verses 2 to 7 give four rules, and the first two are counter-intuitive enough that most people misremember them.
A natural benefic ruling a Kendra does not give auspicious effects.
A natural malefic ruling a Kendra does not give inauspicious effects.
A Trikoṇa lord always gives auspicious effects, whatever its natural character.
The Lagna lord is especially auspicious, because the 1st house is both a Kendra and a Trikoṇa.
Read the first two again. The Kendras — the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th — are the strongest houses in a chart, and Parashara’s position is that their strength overrides the natural character of whoever holds them. Jupiter ruling the 4th and 7th is not doing you the favour you would expect. Saturn ruling the 4th and 5th is doing you a considerable one.
The Trikoṇas — 1st, 5th, 9th — work the other way. Their lordship is favourable unconditionally.
The example that makes it real
Take a Taurus ascendant.
Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces, which for Taurus are the 8th and the 11th. A Duḥsthāna and a Trishadāya. Jupiter is a natural benefic and here it is functionally difficult.
Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius, which for Taurus are the 9th and the 10th. A Trikoṇa and a Kendra, in one planet. Saturn is a natural malefic and here it is a full Yoga Kāraka — the best planet in the chart.
Now read Parashara’s own Taurus entry, verses 23 to 24: Jupiter, Venus and the Moon are malefics while Saturn and the Sun are auspicious. Saturn will cause Rāja Yoga.
Exactly what you derived. It reads as shocking the first time and obvious the second.
If you read a Taurus chart using natural nature alone, you get the two most consequential planets backwards. That is not a subtlety. That is the whole reading.
The Lagna lord
Verse 7 singles it out: the 1st house is both an angle and a trine, so its lord gets the Trikoṇa benefit unconditionally.
Which means a natural malefic ruling the Lagna is functionally favourable — Mars for Aries and Scorpio, Saturn for Capricorn and Aquarius, the Sun for Leo. And it means the Lagna lord’s condition carries more weight than any other planet’s, which is what Chapter 12’s cancellation rules were already telling you in Week 3: the lord of the Lagna, strongly placed in a Kendra, has the capability of destroying all evils.
Several threads converge on this point, and that convergence is worth noticing. The 1st house is the person; its lord carries the person; and every part of the system independently rates it highest.
The question from Week 3, answered
In Week 3 you were left with an unresolved problem. Chapter 13’s affliction rule referred to “the lords of the evil houses”, and the enumeration in this edition — the 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th and 12th — is the translator’s bracketed gloss. It is broader than Chapter 8’s Duḥsthānas, which are the 6th, 8th and 12th. The course said BPHS does not reconcile them there, and flagged Chapter 36 as the place it would be settled.
Verse 15: If an angular Lord or a trinal Lord becomes the Lord of any of malefic Houses (3-6-11), the native does not get Rāja Yoga only by this relationship.
So Parashara’s own list, for this purpose, is the Trishadāya: 3rd, 6th and 11th.
That closes the second of the course’s tracked forward references properly. One remains: Chapter 13’s Avasthā clause, at Chapter 47 in Week 7.
Two refinements, and the nodes
Verses 8 to 10 grade natural nature rather than treating it as binary. Among benefics, in ascending order of beneficence: the full Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus. Among malefics, ascending: the waning Moon, the Sun, Saturn, Mars.
So Venus is more benefic than Mercury and Mars is more malefic than the Sun. And the Moon appears on both lists depending on phase, which is Chapter 3 verse 11’s conditional case given a strength ranking.
Verses 16 and 17 handle Rahu and Ketu, and the position has not moved since Week 1. They give predominantly the effects of the lord of the house they occupy, or of the planet they conjoin. And if they sit in a Kendra or Trikoṇa and are conjoined with or aspected by an angular or trinal lord, they can themselves be Yoga Kārakas.
That is a complete and workable treatment which at no point requires them to rule a sign. Three checkpoints now — Chapters 3, 29 and 36 — and BPHS has been consistent at all three. The course’s position stands.
What to do now
Go back to your lordship map and add a column.
For each of the twelve lords: is it a functional benefic or a functional malefic for this ascendant, and by which rule?
Then read back what you concluded in the Module 3 clinic. Some of it will need revising. That is not a failure of the earlier work — it is the reason the course sequences the material this way, and revising your own conclusions in the light of better evidence is a skill being deliberately built.
Next: the Yoga Kāraka table itself, and the conditions that block one.

2-7. NATURE DUE TO LORDSHIPS OF PLANETS: Natural Benefics do not give auspicious effects when they are lords of the angles, and natural malefics in that position do not give in auspicious effects, while the lords of the trines (whether benefic or malefic) always give auspicious effects. The Lord of the Ascendant is especially auspicious as the Ascendant House is both an angle and a trine. The 5th and 9th Houses are specially related to wealth and the 7th and the 10th Houses to happiness. All the planets lording the Trishadayas (the 3rd, 6th and 11th House) are known as giver of inauspicious effects. The Lords of the 12th, the 2nd and the 8th House give effects according to their association (with a benefic or a malefic) and give effects according to their second House (the House in which they have their 2nd sign) and they are stronger in their qualities in the ascending order. Among these the 8th Lord when he owns the 12th House from the 9th House is not auspicious and if he (the 8th Lord) is the lord of the 3rd, 6th and 11th House also simultaneously he becomes still more inauspicious, but if he is the Lord of the trine (1st, 5th or 9th Lord) he becomes even more auspicious in giving effects. The stronger among the above mentioned combinations becomes the obstructor of the weaker one and gives his own effects. Here the 8th Lordship of the Sun and the Moon is not evil.
It has been thought that the destroyer effects of any house is the 12th House from it. Destiny is the most significant in human life. Generally people, except the yogis, do deeds with the desire of getting effects and one will get the effects if it is written in his fate to get those effects, if he is destined to get them. Therefore the 9th House is of the greatest importance. The 12th from the 9th House, which ever it is, will be the destroyer of destiny. The 12th from the 9th House is the 8th one. Therefore the Lord of the 8th,House is always the giver of inauspicious effect. If the 8th Lord becomes the Trishadayesha also then such an 8th Lord will be extremely endowed with malefic nature. Thus for the natives having Scorpio ascendant the 8th Lord is Mercury and he is also the 11th Lord in this Ascendant. Therefore, Mercury is the most malefic in giving effects to the native in this Ascendant. In the edition of Ranjana Publications in Sloka no 6 there is the word "त्रिषडायाधिपत्वेऽथो" which means that if the 8th becomes the Lord of 3-6-11 Houses also he will be the giver of inauspicious effects. As a matter of fact this word is “त्रिमदायाधिपत्वेऽथो" which will mean "that if the 8th Lord becomes the lord of 3-6-11 Houses also then he will be the giver of inauspicious effects. It is this interpretation which seems to be reasonable here. In sloka no. 4 also. It is these Houses (3-6-11) that have been spoken of as Malefic Houses. If the 8th Lord occupies a trine he doesnot remain a malefic but becomes a benefic.
The House of each class being strong in the ascending order, the strongest house in the horoscope will become obstruction in the effects of the less strong and will give its own effects.
Thus in the Sagittarius Ascendant Saturn will be the Lord of the 2nd and the 3rd House. Being the Lord of the 2nd House he will give the effects of the 3rd House because in the 3rd House falls the 2nd sign of Saturn, Aquarius and the 2nd Lord has to give the effects of his 2nd sign. In this Ascendant Venus will become the 6th and 11th Lord. In the 3-6-11 class of Houses in the ascending order the 11th Lord will be the strongest. Therefore, Venus will become an obstruction in the effects of Saturn and will give her own effects. In order to understand it properly, the Houses may be classified in the following way according to the difference of the effects.
| 1. | Angles | 1-4-7-10 |
| 2. | Trines | 5-9 |
| 3. | Trishadayadhisha | 3-6-11 |
| 4. | Parashraya | 12-2-8 |
In every class the House will be stronger in ascending order. The strongest in their respective Houses will be the 10th, 9th, 11th and 8th Houses.

8-10. NATURAL BENEFICS AND MALEFICS: Jupiter and Venus are said to be natural benefics while the Moon is said to be a mediocre in beneficence. Mercury is neutral and the Sun, Saturn and Mars are natural malefics. Full Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus are stronger in the Ascending order. Emaciated Moon, the Sun, Saturn and Mars are stronger in the ascending order in maleific disposition. Therefore, the maleficence due to the angular rulership of the natural benefics should also be considered more significant in the ascending order in the case of the Moon, Mercury and Venus.

11-12. ANGULAR AND TRINAL LORDSHIPS : If there is an exchange between an angular Lord and a trinal Lord, or if they are in conjunction in a House, or if either of them is there in the other's House, or if they have full aspect of each other, they are Yoga Karakas (they cause auspicious combinations). The native born in this combination will become either a King or an eminent person.

- ANGULAR LORDSHIP: The auspiciousness that a malefic planet acquires when he becomes an angular Lord is acquired by him only when he is a trinal lord also. He does not get this auspiciousness by being merely an angular lord.

- If an angular Lord or a trinal Lord becomes the Lord of any of malefic Houses (3-6-11), the native doesnot get Raja Yoga only by this relationship.
यद्भावेशयुतौ वाऽपि यद्यद्भावसमागतौ ।

- RAHU AND KETU: The shadowy planets Rahu and Ketu give predominantly the effects of the Lord of the House with whom they are in conjunction or of the House in which they are situated.
intensify or strengthen the effect of the planet with whom they are in conjunction. Therefore, the native gets the effects of that planet extraordinarily. Another thing that has been pointed out in the sloka is that these planets (Rahu and Ketu) cause the effects of that house in which they are situated (if they are not in conjunction with any planet). Here a doubtful question arises. Suppose Rahu is situated in the Ascendant in the sign of Sagittarius. Will he cause the effects of the 2nd sign of Jupiter which is Pisces and is situated in the 4th House or will he not do so? We know that all the planets except the Moon and the Sun are lords of two signs. In this condition as Rahu is situated in the sign of Sagittarius, the first sign of Jupiter, he will cause the effects of Jupiter and will bring intensity in these effects. And because it brings intensity in the effects of Jupiter, the 4th House where there is the other sign of Jupiter namely Pisces should also be benefitted by it. In this way Rahu will also get the Lordship of two Houses. The question is whether it is right? It is clearly written in this Sloka यघद् भाव समागतौ that is Rahu and Ketu should cause the effects of that house in which they are situated and they get the quality, nature and habit of that planet with whom they are in conjunction. Nay, they also multiply two fold the effects and qualities etc of that planet.
यदि केन्द्रे त्रिकोणे वा निवसेतां तमोग्रहौ ।

- If the shadowy planets Rahu and Ketu are situated in an angle or a trine, are in conjunction with or are aspected by the Angular Lord or the Trinal Lord, even then they are Yoga Karakas.

Answer: Natural benefics ruling Kendras do not give auspicious effects. Natural malefics ruling Kendras do not give inauspicious effects. Lords of the Trikoṇas always give auspicious effects, benefic or malefic. And the Lagna lord is especially auspicious, because the 1st is both a Kendra and a Trikoṇa.
Read that carefully, because it is counter-intuitive and it is stated in the negative. A benefic ruling a Kendra loses its benefic quality — the usual explanation is that the Kendras are so strong in themselves that they neutralise the natural quality of whoever holds them. So Jupiter ruling the 4th and the 7th is not doing you the favour you would expect, and Saturn ruling the 4th and the 5th is doing you a considerable one.

Give an example where natural nature and functional nature point in opposite directions.

Answer: For a Taurus ascendant, Jupiter is a natural benefic and rules the 8th and 11th — functionally difficult. Saturn is a natural malefic and rules the 9th and 10th — functionally excellent, and a Yoga Kāraka.
That single example is the reason this chapter exists. If you read a Taurus chart with "Jupiter is a benefic, Saturn is a malefic" you will get it backwards on the two most consequential planets in the chart. BPHS's own Taurus entry at verses 23–24 says exactly this: Jupiter, Venus and the Moon are malefics while Saturn and the Sun are auspicious. It reads as shocking until you derive it, and then it is obvious.

Why is the Lagna lord a special case?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Because the 1st house is simultaneously a Kendra and a Trikoṇa, so its lord gets the Trikoṇa benefit regardless of what it is naturally.
Verse 7 says it directly: the Lord of the Ascendant is especially auspicious as the Ascendant House is both an angle and a trine. Which means a natural malefic ruling the Lagna is functionally favourable — Mars for Aries, Saturn for Capricorn and Aquarius, the Sun for Leo. It also means the Lagna lord's condition matters more than any other planet's, a point Chapter 12's cancellation rules already implied in Week 3.
Source: BPHS 36.7
Verse 15 says that if an angular or trinal lord also becomes lord of one of the malefic houses — the 3rd, 6th and 11th — the native does not get Rāja Yoga by that relationship alone. How does this settle the question Chapter 13 left open?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.

Answer: It gives Parashara's own list of the problematic houses for lordship purposes: the 3rd, 6th and 11th — the Trishadāya.
Recall the Week 3 problem. Chapter 13's affliction rule referred to "the lords of the evil houses", and the enumeration you saw — 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th, 12th — was the translator's bracketed gloss, broader than Chapter 8's Duḥsthānas of 6th, 8th and 12th. Here Parashara names his own set for this purpose: 3, 6 and 11. Note that it is a third list, overlapping both and identical to neither. That is not sloppiness — the three lists answer three different questions. Duḥsthānas are difficult places. Trishadāyas are difficult lordships. And the translator's broader list was an attempt to combine them. Knowing which question you are asking tells you which list to use.

For a Cancer ascendant, classify Jupiter, Saturn and Mars by function.
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Jupiter rules the 6th and the 9th — a Trikoṇa and a Trishadāya, so mixed and not straightforwardly benefic. Saturn rules the 7th and the 8th — a Kendra and a Duḥsthāna, functionally difficult. Mars rules the 5th and the 10th — a Trikoṇa and a Kendra, which makes it a full Yoga Kāraka.
Check against Parashara's Cancer entry at verses 27–28: Venus and Mercury are malefics, Mars, Jupiter and Moon are benefics. Of these Mars is full Yoga Kāraka. Your derivation of Mars matches exactly. Your reading of Jupiter as mixed is more cautious than the entry, which simply calls it benefic — and that difference is worth holding rather than discarding, because the 6th lordship is real.

Einstein's chart has a Gemini ascendant, and this unit will change how several of its planets read. Work from the lordship map you built in Week 4 rather than starting again.
- For Gemini rising, classify every one of the seven grahas by its lordships: which houses does it rule, and is each a Kendra, a Trikoṇa, a Trishadāya (3rd, 6th, 11th), or none of those?
- Now apply verses 2–7. Which planets are functional benefics for this ascendant and which are functional malefics? Write the list before checking BPHS's own Gemini entry at verses 25–26.
- Compare your derivation with Parashara's entry. Where they agree, note it. Where they differ or where the entry is less specific than your derivation, note that too — and do not assume you are wrong.
- Now the revision. Jupiter is a natural benefic. For Gemini it rules the 7th and the 10th, both Kendras. What does verse 2–7 say about a natural benefic ruling only Kendras? Rewrite whatever you said about Jupiter in the Module 3 clinic.
- Do the same for Chart C — Virgo rising — and for your own chart. The functional-nature column is now a permanent part of your lordship map.
Check your understanding
Answer from memory first. Looking back at the reading before you try turns a memory test into a copying exercise.
Which houses are the Trishadāya, and why do they matter?

Answer: The 3rd, 6th and 11th. Lordship of one of them compromises a planet that would otherwise be a Yoga Kāraka.
They are also the three Upachayas other than the 10th, which is a neat structural fact: houses that reward malefic occupation are houses whose lordship is a liability. Occupying and ruling are different relationships and BPHS treats them differently, which is worth registering because the two get conflated constantly.

Answer: Among benefics, in ascending order of strength: the full Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus. Among malefics, in ascending order: the waning Moon, the Sun, Saturn, Mars.
Two refinements of Week 1 here. Natural nature has degrees rather than being binary — Venus is more benefic than Mercury, Mars more malefic than the Sun. And the Moon appears on both lists depending on its phase, which is Chapter 3 verse 11's conditional case restated with a strength ranking attached.

Verse 16 says Rahu and Ketu predominantly give the effects of the lord of the house they occupy, or of the planet they conjoin. What does that confirm?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: That BPHS continues to handle the nodes without assigning them sign lordship — the position established in Chapter 3 and confirmed in Chapter 29.
This is the third checkpoint and the position has not moved. The nodes take their character from their context: whose sign they sit in, whose company they keep. Verse 17 adds that they can become Yoga Kārakas themselves if placed in a Kendra or Trikoṇa and connected to an angular or trinal lord. That is a complete and workable treatment that never requires them to rule anything.

A student says "Venus is a benefic so a Venus daśā will be pleasant." Name every layer of the mistake.
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Natural nature is not functional nature; functional nature is not strength; and none of the three tells you what a daśā delivers without the lordship map and the natal promise.
For a Gemini ascendant Venus rules the 5th and the 12th — a Trikoṇa and a house of expenditure. For a Scorpio ascendant it rules the 7th and the 12th and BPHS calls it a malefic outright. And even where Venus is functionally excellent, a debilitated Venus with low Ṣaḍbala delivers little. Three separate errors stacked in one sentence, and the sentence is one you will hear constantly.
What you carry forward
Two things grow across the whole course. This unit adds to both.
To your chart-analysis process
- **Step 10 (opened) — identify Yogas, supporting and contradicting.** Before that: classify every planet's functional nature for this ascendant, using the four-tier framework. This changes the meaning of every lordship connection on your map.
To your field manual
- Four-tier framework (36.2–7): natural benefics ruling Kendras lose their benefic quality; natural malefics ruling Kendras lose their malefic quality; Trikoṇa lords are always auspicious whatever their nature; the Lagna lord is especially auspicious because the 1st is both.
- Trishadāya = 3rd, 6th, 11th. Lordship of one compromises an otherwise favourable planet (36.15).
- THREE DIFFERENT LISTS, three different questions: Duḥsthāna (6, 8, 12) = difficult places. Trishadāya (3, 6, 11) = difficult lordships. The 'evil houses' gloss at 13.14–16 (3, 6, 8, 11, 12) is the translator's combination of both.
- Natural nature is graded (36.8–10): benefics ascending — full Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus. Malefics ascending — waning Moon, Sun, Saturn, Mars.
- Rahu and Ketu take the effects of their dispositor or their companion (36.16), and can be Yoga Kārakas by placement and association (36.17). Still no sign lordship.
By now you should be able to
- State the four-tier lordship framework and apply it to any ascendant
- Distinguish functional nature from natural nature, with an example where they oppose
- Explain why the Lagna lord is a special case
- Say how Chapter 36 resolves Chapter 13's 'evil houses' question
