Week 6 — Yogas: Functional Nature, Combinations, and Raja Yoga

Chapter 36 is the payoff of last week's lordship work: it converts "which houses does this planet rule?" into "is this planet good or bad for this particular ascendant?" It is the most practically decisive chapter in Volume 1. Everything after it this week is combination material that only makes sense once functional nature is understood.

What you should be able to do by the end

For any ascendant, state which planets are functional benefics, which are functional malefics, and which are Yoga Karakas - and recognise whether a yoga present in a chart is actually in a condition to deliver anything.

There is one idea this week that matters more than all the yoga names put together: a yoga’s presence is not its result.

Popular astrology is full of “you have Raja Yoga!” announcements detached from whether the planets involved are strong, well placed, or blocked outright. Parashara himself states the blocking condition - a Yoga Karaka is obstructed if either planet also rules a Trishadaya house - and this course gives the blocking rules the same weight as the forming rules.

Chapters 37 and 38 together are thirteen thousand words of yoga catalogue: thirty-two Nabhasa yogas and a large assortment of others. They are read as a catalogue, with their organising logic explained, so you can recognise a named pattern when you see one and know exactly where to confirm it. They are not study material, and treating them as such is the one thing that would break this week.
