Week 8 — How Time Is Divided, and What a Dasha Means
Chapter 48 is the largest chapter in BPHS - twenty-two thousand words surveying over forty dasha systems - and almost all of it is material you will never use. Its core is small and vital: how Vimshottari is built. Chapter 49 then gives Mahadasha results planet by planet, and Chapter 50 gives them by house lordship, which is the chapter that actually makes dasha interpretation work.
What you should be able to do by the end
Build a Vimshottari sequence from a birth nakshatra, and explain what any given Mahadasha will emphasise in a specific chart by reference to what that planet rules and where it sits - never by the planet's name alone.
Timing is meaningless without natal promise, and that is why it waits until Week 8. You may not begin timing a life until you can already judge the chart it belongs to.
The correction this week exists to make is the one everybody arrives with: Planet X dasha equals Outcome Y. Parashara supplies the antidote himself in Chapter 50. What a dasha delivers depends on what that planet rules in this chart, where it sits, what condition it is in, and what it aspects. Saturn’s dasha is not “bad”. Saturn ruling the ninth and eleventh from a Libra ascendant, exalted, is a different proposition entirely from Saturn ruling the sixth and seventh, debilitated.
The chain you will use for the rest of the course is installed here, and it never changes: natal promise, then Mahadasha, then Antardasha, then Pratyantardasha where useful, then likely activated themes. Nothing gets timed that was not promised.
