Week 8 · Unit 3 · Timing - The Dasha Systems
Milestone 3 of 3: What a period actually delivers
What a Mahādaśā Actually Does
Chapter 49 gives results planet by planet — and reading it as a fortune list is the mistake the next unit exists to correct.
Assumes you have done: Units 1 and 2 of this week
Why this matters
Chapter 49 is the chapter that produces most of the bad Jyotish in the world. It gives the results of each planet's Mahādaśā, and read carelessly it says "Saturn period, therefore hardship". Read carefully it says something much more useful, because every single entry is conditioned on the planet's placement and dignity. This unit is about reading it carefully — and it is the setup for the chapter that corrects it entirely.
Learn
This is the chapter that produces most of the bad Jyotish in the world, and it does not deserve the blame.
What Chapter 49 actually says
Read the Sun’s treatment. Verses 7 to 11 describe what a Sun Mahādaśā produces when the Sun is in Mūlatrikoṇa, its own sign, or exalted, and occupying an angle. Verses 12 to 15 describe what it produces when the Sun is weak by position in the 6th, 8th or 12th, in its sign of debilitation, or afflicted by conjunction.
Two treatments. Two sets of conditions.
Now check the rest of the chapter. Every planet gets the same structure. A favourable version and an unfavourable one, with the placement and dignity that distinguish them stated explicitly each time.
You have seen this shape five times now: a rule with a qualification attached, where popular teaching keeps the rule and drops the qualification. Ariṣṭa without Chapter 12. Yoga formation without the blocking. Argala without the obstruction. Solar yogas without the malefic reversal. And now daśā results without the placement conditions that produce them.
The right way to read it
Treat Chapter 49 as Parashara’s illustration of method.
He is not enumerating outcomes; he is demonstrating an inference. Twice per planet, at the two extremes, so that you can perform the same inference for everything in between — which is most charts, since most planets are neither exalted in a Kendra nor debilitated in the 8th.
Read a planet’s block and ask: what is he reasoning from? Dignity, house placement, aspect, conjunction. All things you have been able to assess since Week 5.
That reframing turns a chapter that looked like a fortune list into a worked example of the method you already have.
The gate
Now the rule that the rest of this course runs on, installed here because this is the week timing arrives.
Nothing gets timed that was not promised.
A daśā does not create. It activates. If a chart shows no promise in some area of life, no period will manufacture one — the period will express itself through whatever the chart actually does support.
So the chain, in order, every time:
Natal promise → Mahādaśā → Antardaśā → (Pratyantardaśā where warranted) → likely activated themes.
The first step is not optional and it is not a formality. It is written down before you look at a single date.
Reading in the wrong direction
There is a specific failure this rule is built to prevent, and it is worth naming because it is seductive and almost invisible from the inside.
You know an event happened. You look at the daśā running at the time. You find something in that planet’s condition that “explains” the event. You feel confirmed.
But every event falls inside some period. And every planet in every chart has enough connections that some account can be constructed after the fact. What feels like confirmation is usually just the availability of a story.
The honest version runs the other way and is much harder: establish what the chart promises, then look at the period, then see whether the two are consistent. If you did not know the event, would you have said this period could deliver it?
Week 10’s Chart Clinic and Week 13’s blind practice test exactly this, and almost everybody finds the first attempt uncomfortable.
What Chapter 49 still cannot tell you
Even read correctly, this chapter has a limit, and it is a large one.
It reasons entirely from the planet’s own condition — its dignity, its house, its aspects. It says nothing about what the planet rules in this chart.
Which means it treats a Saturn Mahādaśā the same way whether Saturn rules the 9th and 10th or the 6th and 7th. And those are completely different periods.
The chapter that fixes this is the next one, and it is the interpretive key to the whole timing half of the course.
Read BPHS
This is the source itself. The teaching above prepares you for it; it does not replace it.

Beginning of the Dasa brings kingship, in the middle of the Dasa, feeling of intense fear and towards the end of the Dasa, travelling to farflung countries and fear of ailments is felt. Ketu conjunct with or aspecied by the malefic planets while posited in the 2nd, the 8th or the 12th house brings about severance of relationship with co-borns, relatives etc., and destruction of the property (land), anguish, company of inferiors, eruption of disease etc.

88-89 : Apropos results are in the Dasa of Venus and similar kind of results may also be expected in the Venus’s Antradasa of the Mahadasa of other planets. Should Venus be the lord of the 2nd or the 7th house, there will be physical danger. To mitigate this effect, obeisance of Lord Shiva through Vedic Mantras or recitction of Mrityunjaya (मृत्युव्जय मन्त्र) may be pertormed. Donation of cow or buffalo also brings a sound health.
Notas : Acquring the lordshipship of the 2nd and the 7th houses, Venus becomes Maraka (propensity of inflicting death). However, Venus acts as Maraka when posited in the malefic houses. With the placement in the inauspicious houses and under malefic aspects, Venus becomes more powerful towards his function of Markesha.
The good and adverse results of the planets surface during the Mahadasa and Antardasa of such Planets. However, the native also experiences the effect of the other planets who are exerting their influences (benefic or maletic) on the planet whose Dasa or Antardasa is operating With every Ascendant, the sequence of the results of the Dasa of a particular planet gets changed, The Ascendant plays predominant rely in fixing malefie or benefic characteristic of a planet and consequently sets in variation in the results during their Dasas

Chapter 49 gives the Sun's Mahādaśā results twice, in verses 7–11 and 12–15. What distinguishes the two treatments?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Placement and dignity. The first covers the Sun in Mūlatrikoṇa, own or exalted sign and in angles; the second covers the Sun weak by position in the 6th, 8th or 12th, debilitated, or afflicted by conjunction.
Every planet in the chapter gets this treatment — a favourable version and an unfavourable one, distinguished by stated conditions. Which means Chapter 49 is not a list of what each planet does. It is a list of what each planet does given its condition, and the conditions are the whole content.

Why does the popular model "Planet X daśā means Outcome Y" survive, given that Chapter 49 does not say it?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Because it is easy to remember, easy to teach, and produces confident statements — and because the conditions are the part that gets dropped when a chapter is summarised.
Notice the shape of the error, which you have seen five times already this course. It is not that the popular model invents something; it is that it keeps the result and drops the condition. Ariṣṭa without the antidotes. Yoga formation without the blocking. Argala without the obstruction. And now daśā results without the placement conditions that produce them.
A chart has Saturn exalted in Libra, in the 4th house, aspected by Jupiter, and Saturn rules the 9th and 10th. What does Chapter 49 support saying about the Saturn Mahādaśā?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: The favourable treatment applies — exalted, in an angle, benefically aspected. Chapter 49 supports expecting the constructive results it attaches to a strong Saturn.
And the lordship detail from the question is not something Chapter 49 uses at all — it is what Chapter 50 adds in the next unit, and it is what turns "a strong Saturn period" into "a period in which fortune and public action are activated through a strong Saturn". Chapter 49 gets you halfway. It was never meant to get you further.
How should Chapter 49 be read — as a fortune list, a reference table, or something else?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: As Parashara's illustration of method: here is how a daśā result is reasoned from a planet's condition.
That framing is the most useful one available, and it explains the chapter's shape. Parashara is not enumerating outcomes; he is demonstrating the inference twice per planet, once for a strong placement and once for a weak one, so you can perform it yourself for the cases in between. Which is most cases, since most planets in most charts are neither exalted in a Kendra nor debilitated in the 8th.
State the natal-promise rule and explain why it belongs here rather than in Week 13.
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Nothing gets timed that was not promised. It belongs at first contact with timing, so the habit is built rather than corrected.
A daśā does not create; it activates. If a chart shows no promise in an area, no period will manufacture one — the period will express itself through whatever the chart does support. Installing this rule now, in the same week that timing is introduced, is a deliberate structural decision: the gate exists before you have any opportunity to form the habit it prevents.
Apply it to a chart

Einstein's Venus Mahādaśā ran from 1896 to 1916 — most of his twenties and thirties. Venus in this chart is exalted in the 10th. The exercise is to read Chapter 49 correctly against that.
- Find Chapter 49's treatment of the Venus Mahādaśā. Note which conditions Parashara attaches to the favourable version and which to the unfavourable.
- Now check which conditions this chart's Venus actually satisfies. It is exalted, in a Kendra, in the 10th. Write down which of Parashara's stated conditions are met and which are not.
- Write one sentence on what Chapter 49 alone would lead you to expect of this period. Keep it — you will revise it in the next unit.
- Now do the same for the Sun Mahādaśā, 1916 to 1922. The Sun here is in Pisces in the 10th, neutral in dignity.
- Only now look at the documented timeline for those two periods. Do not adjust your sentences to fit it. Note instead where your reading and the record agree, where they do not, and — most importantly — what your reading could not have told you at all.

Answer from memory first. Looking back at the reading before you try turns a memory test into a copying exercise.
State the timing chain in order.
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.

Answer: Natal promise → Mahādaśā → Antardaśā → Pratyantardaśā where warranted → likely activated themes.
Five steps, and the first is not optional. Every timing statement you make from here to the end of the course has to start at the left of that chain. Write it somewhere you will see it.
What is wrong with the sentence "his Rahu daśā brought him fame"?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: It attributes the outcome to the period rather than to what the chart promised and the period activated — and it skips every intervening step.
The defensible form is longer and worth the words: the chart supports prominence through these specific factors; the Rahu period, given what Rahu rules and where it sits here, activates those factors; the timing is consistent. Note that this can only be said in that order. Working backwards from a known outcome to a period that "explains" it is the failure mode Week 13's blind practice exists to expose.
Where would you look for what BPHS says about a Mercury Mahādaśā?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Chapter 49, in Mercury's block — verses 61 onward, favourable treatment first and then the afflicted one.
Chapter 49 runs the planets in order with two treatments each, so any planet's block is easy to locate. And you should read both treatments every time, not just the one you expect to apply — the conditions are what tell you which is which.

A period is running and the person reports nothing much happening. Does that mean the reading was wrong?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Not necessarily. It may mean the chart has little promise in the area the period activates.
This is the natal-promise rule read in the other direction, and it is worth having. A Mahādaśā of a planet that rules quiet houses, sits without strength, and connects to nothing much will produce a quiet period. Periods do not have to be eventful. A student who expects every daśā to deliver drama has misunderstood what activation means.
What you carry forward
Two things grow across the whole course. This unit adds to both.
To your chart-analysis process
- **Step 11 — STATE THE NATAL PROMISE.** Before touching timing, write down explicitly what this chart is set up to give, withhold or complicate in the area under examination. You may not proceed to Step 12 until Step 11 is written down.
To your field manual
- **Nothing gets timed that was not promised.** Natal promise → Mahādaśā → Antardaśā → Pratyantardaśā where warranted → likely activated themes.
- Ch. 49 gives each planet TWO treatments — favourable and unfavourable — distinguished by stated placement and dignity conditions. The conditions are the content.
- Read Ch. 49 as an illustration of method, not as a fortune list. Parashara demonstrates the inference twice per planet so you can perform it for the cases in between.
- A quiet period is a legitimate outcome. A planet ruling quiet houses, without strength, connected to little, produces little.
- Never reason backwards from a known event to the period that explains it.
By now you should be able to
- Say what determines a Mahādaśā's results according to Chapter 49
- Explain why 'Saturn daśā is difficult' is not what the chapter says
- Read a Chapter 49 entry as Parashara's illustration of method
- State the natal-promise rule and why it comes before any timing statement
