Verse 1–2

1-2 : Maitraya said - O Maharishi ! You have since ex plained the results on the basis of the time of the birth but how to find out the results of the one whose time of birth is unknown. Kindly deseribe if there exist any method through which auspicious and inauspicious results modelled by the past birth, could be ascertained.

Verse 3–4

3-4 : Maharishi Parasara said - O Vipra ! You have posed a good question for the benefit of the people at large. Obsessed by your affection, I narrate the results for the persons with unknown time of birth. The year, Ayana, Ritu (seasons), month, Tithi, Nakshatra, Rashi (sign) what so ever is required to be known that could be ascertained through the Prasna Lagna (Query Chart).

Verse 5–6

5-6 Method of ascertaining Samvatsara (संवत्सर) : The sign of the Dwadasamsa of the query chart occupied by the Ascendant of the query chart (प्रश्न लग्न) is known as Samvatsara (i.e. the sign occupied by Jupiter in the year of the birth of the querist). If the Prasna Lagna (Ascendant of the query chart) is in the first Hora, it will be Uttarayana (उत्तरायण - Northernly course of the Sun) and if it be in the second Hora, it will be Dakshinayana (दक्षिणायन - Southernly course of the Sun). If the lord of the Drekkana (द्रेष्कोण) is Saturn, it will denote Shishira Ritu (Winter season), if Venus, Vasanta Ritu (Spring season), if Mars, Greeshma Ritu (Summer season), if the Moon, Varsha Ritu (Rainy season), if Mercury, Sharad Ritu (Autumn season), if Jupiter, Hemanta Ritu (Winter season), if the Sun, also Greeshma Ritu (Summer season).

Verse 7

7: If the indication of Ayana (अयन) and Ritus (seasons) are at variance, in that case, Mars in place of Mercury, Venus for the Moon and Saturn instead of Jupiter be considered for ascertaining the season (prevailing at time of birth).

Mercury = Summer (Greeshama)
Moon = Spring (Vasanta)
Jupiter = Winter (Shishira)
Mars = Autumn (Sarad)
Venus = Rainy (Varsha)
Saturn = Winter (Hemanta)

Verse 8–9

8-9 : The first half part (5 Deg.) of the Drekkana will denote the first month of the season (There are six seasons and each season is of two months) and the second half part will be represented by the second month of the season. The Tithi (तिथि) could be determined on the propotionate basis of the part of Drekkana Degrees (Amsas) of the Sun. The Istakala (इष्टकाल) denoted by the Sun's degrees will be the time of birth of the queriest. After calculating the degrees (Spasta) of the other planets and the houses, the predictions for the queriest should be (from the time of birth thus obtained) pronounced.

Seasons Months
i) Vasanta (Spring) Chaitra and Vaisaka (April and May)
ii) Greeshma (Summer) Jyeshta and Ashada (June and July)
iii) Varsha (Rainy) Shravana and Bhadra (August and Sept.)
iv) Sarad (Autumn) Aswini and Kritika (October and November)
v) Hemanta (Winter) Mrigasira and Pausha (December and January)
vi) Shashira (Winter) Magha and Phalguna (February and March)

If the first half of the Drekkana rising at the time of query, all the 30 days of a month will be represented by the first month of that season and should the latter part of the Drekkana be rising, it will indicate that the birth has taken place in the second month of the season. A Drekkana is of 10 degrees and half of the Drekkana will be of 5 degrees. The 30th part of this 5 degree of the Drekkana 653 will constitute just 10 minutes. In other words, every 10 minutes of rising of half Drekkana will represent a day'.

There are two Ayanas viz. Uttarayana. Three seasons each are covered by these two Ayanas. The seasons Shashira, Vasanta and Greeshma are in the fold of Uttarayana while, the rest of the three seasons namely Varsha, Sarad and Hemanta, will go to Dakshinyana.

If the Ritu does not agree with the Ayana, the season of the alternative planet shall be taken as the season of the birth of the querist. The first, the Moon and Venus the second, Mercury and Mars and the third, Jupiter and Saturn are the three pairs of alternative planets.

Verse 10

10 : Maitraya enquired - O Maharishi ! Since Jupiter turns around to the same sign after 12 years, which of the cycle (of Jupiter) be considered the year of the birth.

Verse 11–12

11-12 : Maharishi Parasara said - O Virtuous Brahmin ! In the event of doubt about the birth year, it should be judged from the approximate age of the querist at the time of query and the birth time (year) be fixed by adding, 12 years for each Jupiter's cycle to arrive at the estimated number of years of the age and the year of the birth. Inspite of this, if any difference in the age is indicated, then presum ing the position of Jupiter in the trinal sign from the Ascendant (Prashna Lagna), the age of the querist is estimated and through which the time of birth on the basis of Lagna and Ritu, is fixed as per the procedure described earlier.

Verse 13

13 : Maitreya contended, O Maharishi ! After finding out the month, degrees (Amsas) of the Sun etc. as stated by you, how to ascertain the time of birth, kindly explain to me for the advantage of the world at large.

Verse 14–16

14-16 Maharishi Parasara said, O Virtuous Brahmin ! On determining the sign, Amsa etc., of the Sun, the longitudinal (Amsas) details of the Sun be ascertained on the basis of number of days expired after the Sun's ingress into a sign identical with the consumed degree (Amsas) etc. at the sunrise. Thereafter, convert the difference between the Amsas (degrees etc.) of the sunrise and the Sun's Amsas (longitude) at the time of birth into Kala (कला) and multiply it by 60. The product be then divided by the day's motion of the Sun. The resultant Ghatis, Palas etc. will denote "Ishta Kala" of the birth either before or after the sunrise. If the longitude of the Ishta Sun is less then the longitude of the sunrise of the Sun, that much before the sunrise, and if the longitude of the Ishta Sun is more than the longitude of the sunrise of the Sun, that much after the sunrise would be the Istakala of the birth (Time of birth). (This principle will be well understood once the readers go through the example coming up in the note portion of this chapter).

Example: 102

Let us suppose, a querist whose birth details are not known, approached an Astrologer on 11-4-1991 at 11-40 hrs. The Ishta Kala of the sunrise was 14 Gh. 9 Pal. 40 Vipal. The longitude of the Sun was 11³-27°-7"-38" and Ascendant 25-26°-37-56". The Ayanamsa was 23°-44'-22". The age of the querist was estimated to be between 18 and 22 years. The chart at the time of query is shown below :

Diagram from BPHS chapter 80
Diagram from the source text, BPHS chapter 80.

The Aries is the Ascendant for the Dwadasamsa Chart. There fore, Jupiter will be posited in the Aries sign at the time of birth, meaning thereby, when Jupiter was passing through Aries, the nativa had birth in that year. Jupiter remains in one sign for about one yea In the query chart, Jupiter is posited in the Cancer sign and Jupiter was transiting the Aries sign 4 years prior to it. If we take into account one full zodiacal cycle of Jupiter, the native would be arround 16 years (12 + 4). Considering another cycle of Jupiter, the age of the native will go in the vicinity of 28 years but we have estamated the age between 18 and 22 years. Therefore, reckoning one cycle of Jupiter I will take us nearer the estimated age and we take off from this point.

By subtracting 16 years from the year of query i.e. 1991, the rough year of birth comes to 1975. It is confirmed, from the Panchanga (Almanac or Ephemeris) that the transitory position of Jupiter during 1975 was in the Aries sign. It is important to note here that we should stick to the year of birth on the basis of the deductions and should there be some difference in the actual transiting position of Jupite at the time of birth, the same could be over looked.

Assessment of Ayana : The Ascendant at the time of query is 25-26°-37¹-56" which is in the latter part of the Gemini sign and hence the birth was 'Dakshinayana'.

Assessment of Ritu (season) : The query Ascendant is in the Drekkana of Saturn which denotes Shishira Ritu. This Ritu falls between 20 January to 19 March when the Sun transits Capricorn and Aquarius sign. Here we have seen that the compatibility between Ayana and Ritu does not exist. Therefore, we need to take shelter of the special rule embodied in Shloka 7 and according to which the Ritu connected with Jupiter should be adopted. Jupiter denotes Hemanta Ritu which takes place between 20 November and 19 January corresponding to lunar months Mrigshira and Pausha.

Assessment of the month : The longitude of the query Ascendant is 2-26º-37¹-56" which is the latter part of the 3rd Drekkana which indicates the 2nd month of the pair of month. Therefore, Pausa lunar month (from 19 December to 19 January) would be the month of the birth.

Assessment of the Amsas of the Sun : The third Drekkana of the query Ascendant is 1°-37-56" ahead of the Ist half of this part of Drekkana (after 25°) i.e. 1°-38' (say). Therefore, the expired position in the degrees (Amsas) etc. is 1 Amsa and 38 Kalas (60+38) =98 Kalas. The 5 Amsas of the latter part of the Drekkana will be 300 Kalas. (5° × 60). The latter half of the Drekkana is equal to 30 Amsas (degrees) of the Sun (i.e. month) and thus we can find out the expired Amsas of the Sun by applying rule of proportion.

30 Amsas = 300 Kalas
98 Amsa = 30 × 98
300 10
= 9 Amsas and 48 Kalas (9°-48')

The Sun between 19 December and 19 January remains in the Sagittarius sign. Therefore, the longitude of the Sun at the time of birth will be 8-9°-48'-00".

Assessment of time of birth : From the longitude of the Sun, it has become evident that the native was born 9 days after the solar ingress in the Sagittarius sign. Therefore, we need to find out the longitude of the Sun on the sunrise of the 10th day. The longitude of the Sun at the time of sunrise on the 25th December, 1975 was 85-9°-11' and, day's motion of the Sun was 1°-1'(61'). These data are less than the above Sun's longitude. Therefore, the native was born after the sunrise. On the basis of these details, we now proceed to fix the time of birth of the native.

Subtract the longitude of the sunrise from the reckoned longitude of the Sun.

Longitude of the Sun : 8s 48'
Less longitude of sunrise (-) 8 9 11
0 0 37

The daily motion of the Sun is 61' and there are 60 Ghates in a day. Therefore, the expired Amsas (degrees) after the sunrise will be.

37 × 60 = 36 Gh. 23 Pal., 36 Vipal
61 36 Gh and -24 Pal. (say)

Therefore, the native was born 36 Gh. 24 Pal after the sunrise.

The birth time could also be worked out in terms of hours and minutes by taking 24 hrs in place of 60 Ghatis for the day. It will come to :

37 × 24 = 888 = 14 hrs. 33 mts. 25 sec.
61 61

Alternatively, divide Ghatis etc. by 2.5 or 5 to get the position of hrs. etc.

(36 - 24) ÷ 5 = (36 - 24) × 2
2 5
= 72 - 48
5

This expired hrs. after the sunrise should be added to the time of sunrise on 25th December 1975 which was 7 hrs. 16 mts. and we will arrive at the birth time of the native.

hrs. mts.
Time of sunrise 07 16
Add expired time 14 34
21 50

Therefore, the time of birth of the native was 9 hrs. 50 mts. at night on the 25th December 1975. Based onthis birth time, the birth chart of the native could be erected and analysed for the predictions.
