अथाऽन्यत् संप्रवक्ष्यामि सुलग्ने सुग्रहेष्वपि ।
यदन्यकारणेनापि भवेज्जन्माऽशुभप्रदम् ॥ १ ॥

दर्शे, कृष्णाचतुर्दश्यां विष्ट्यां सोदरभे तथा ।
पितृभे सूर्यसंक्रान्तौ पातेऽर्केदुग्रहे तथा ॥ २ ॥

व्यतीपातादिदुर्योगे गण्डान्ते त्रिविधेऽपि वा ।
यमघण्टेऽवभे दग्धयोगे त्रीतरजन्म च ॥ ३ ॥

प्रसवस्य विकारेऽपि ज्ञेयं जन्माऽशुभप्रदम् ।
शान्त्या भवति कल्याणं तदुपायं च वच्म्यहम् ॥ ४ ॥

Verse 1–4

1-4: Maharishi Parasara said - O Vipra! Now I will narrate the causes of the inauspicious births despite the fact when Ascendant (लग्न) and other planets being auspicious and well disposed. If a birth takes place ing the Amavasya (अमावास्या), or Chaturdasi of the darker half of the lunar month. (14th tithi of Krishna Paksha), in the prevalance of VishtiKarna (विष्टि करण), having the birth Nakshatra that of brother, in the birth Nakshatra of mother and father, during the solar ingress, during the Pata (क्रन्ति साम्य), at the time of Solar or Lunar eclipses, during in the prevalance of inauspicious Yogas like Vyatipata (व्यतिपात) etc. in all the three types of Gandants, during Yamaghant (यमघंट), Tithikshaya (तिथिक्षय), in the Yogas of Dagdha (दग्ध) etc., Tritara (त्रितर) birth (son's birth after the birth of three daughters and vice-versa), a freak birth (some degree of disability) are considered inauspicious births. Performing of propitiatory measures will be beneficial and therefore, I now explain these measures (rituals) in the succedingly narrations.
