89. PROPITIATION OF PLANETS FOR BIRTHS DURING KRISHNA-CHATAURDASHI

कृष्णपक्षचतुर्दश्या: षड्भागेषु फलं क्रमात् ।
जन्म चेत् प्रथमे भागे तदा ज्ञेयं शुभं द्विज ! ॥ १ ॥

द्वितीये पितरं हन्ति मातरं च तृतीयके ।
चतुर्थे मातुलं चैव पञ्चमे वंशनाशनम् ॥ २ ॥

षष्ठे तु धननाशः स्यादात्मनो नाश एव वा ।
तद्दोषपरिहारार्थं शाप्तिं कुर्यात् प्रयत्नतः ॥ ३ ॥

1-3 : Maharishi Parasara said - O Vipra ! The result of this affliction will be in accordance to the birth taking place in six different parts of Krishna Chataurdashi. If birth is in the first part, it be considered auspicious. The birth in the second and the third parts, will cause death to father and mother respectively. The birth in the fourth part, will attribute ruination of the maternal uncle and in the fifth part, will cause destruction of the family. There will be down fall of self and loss of wealth, should the birth be in the sixth part. For getting released from this affliction, propitiatory measures be taken in line the with the prescribed rituals.

शिवस्य प्रतिमां कुर्यात् सौवर्णी कर्षसम्मिताम् ।
तदर्धार्धमितां वाऽपि यथावित्तं मनोहराम् ॥ ४ ॥

बालचन्द्रकिरीटाञ्च श्वेतमाल्याम्बरान्विताम् ।
त्रिनेत्रां च वृषासीनां वराभयकरामथ ॥ ५ ॥

4-5 : An elegant idol of Lord Shiva be made in one Karsha (कर्ष - a measure of 16 Masas - माशा) or half of the weight or of an affodable weight with a sign of new Moon on the forehead, white rosary, attired in white clothes, possessing three eyes (त्रिनेत्र- one in the forehead), mounted over a bull and hands showing postures of blessing (वर) and fearlessness (अभय).

'त्रयम्बकं' चेति मन्त्रेण पूजां कुर्यादतन्द्रितः ।
आवाह्य वारुणैर्मन्त्रैराचार्यो मन्त्रतत्त्ववित् ॥ ६ ॥

'इमं मे वरुणे' त्येवं 'तत्त्वा यामी' त्यचा पुनः ।
'त्वन्नो अग्ने' इत्यनया 'स त्वं नो' इत्यूचापि च ॥ ७ ॥

आग्नेयं कुम्भारम्य पूजयेत् भक्तितः क्रमात् ।
'आ नो भद्रे' ति सूक्तं च 'भद्रा अग्नेश्च' सूक्तकम् ॥ ८ ॥

जप्त्वा पुरुषसूक्तं च 'कुद्रुद्रे' ति तथा जपेत् ।
शंकरस्याऽभिषेकं च ग्रहपूजां च कारयेत् ॥ ९ ॥

समिदाज्यचरूंश्चैव तिलमाषांश्च सर्वपान् ।
अश्वत्थप्लक्षपालासखादिराः समिधः शुभाः ॥ १० ॥

अष्टोत्तरशतं वही जुहुयाद् विधिपूर्वकम् ।
अष्टाविंशतिसंख्या वा होमं कुर्यात् पृथक् पृथक् ॥ ११ ॥

मन्त्रेण 'त्रयम्बकेना' ऽथ तिलान् व्याहृतिभिस्तथा ।
ग्रहहोमं च विधिवत् कुर्यात् क्षेमं ततो भवेत् ॥ १२ ॥

अभिषेकं च जातस्य तत्पित्रोश्चापि मन्त्रवित् ।
फुर्यात् ततो यथाशक्ति ब्राह्मणान् भोजयेत् सुधीः ॥ १३ ॥

6-13: The Brahmins knowing the ccorrect substance of the Mantras, should make the beginning with Varuna (वरुण) Mantra after fully invoking themselves and then commence the worship with the Kalasha (कलश) duly installed in the south-west corner while chanting Mantras viz; "त्रयम्बक .....", "इमं मे वरुण....", "तत्म यामि.....", "त्वन्नो अग्ने ....." and "तथा स तवं नों...". Thereafter Japa (जप) of Sukta (सूक्त) "आ नो भद्रे ...." etc., and "भद्रा अग्नेश्य......" be performed followed by the recitation of "कुद्रुदे...." etc., Mantras. Subsequently, the idol of Lord Shiva be given water bath (अभिषेक) and worship of Nine-Planets (नव ग्रह) be carried out. This be succeeded with Havana (हवन) in a prescribed manner giving oblation of, Ghee (घी), Charu (चरु), sesamums seeds (तिल), Urda (pulse - माष), mustered oil, wood pieces (समिधा) of Pipal (पीपल) Pakar (पाकर), Palas (पलास), Khaira (खैर), amidst chanting Mantras for 108 or 28 times severally for each Planet. Next, as per the precept, while chanting the Mantras of "यम्बक ...." Havana (हवन) with the oblations of Sesamums seeds be performed for the nine planets with full rituals. Finally, the water of the Kalasha be sprinkled (अभिषेक) over the child and the father and then Brahmins, as many one can afford, be fed. This will bring wellfare(कल्याण) to the child.
