Week 11 · Unit 2 · Ashtakavarga and Additional Classical Methods
Milestone 2 of 5: Reading the bindus
What the Bindus Say
Reading Aṣṭakavarga interpretively — and a second longevity instrument to set beside Chapter 45's three.
Assumes you have done: Unit 1 of this week, and Week 7 unit 2 for the longevity comparison
Why this matters
Chapter 72 turns counts into readings, and it does so in a specific way worth understanding: it reads bindus in a sign against the transit of a planet through that sign. That is a genuinely different use from anything you have met, and it is where Aṣṭakavarga earns its place in modern practice. Chapter 73 then gives longevity from bindus — a fourth instrument on a question where you already have three that disagree.
Learn
Counts become readings here, and the way they do it is genuinely new.
Seven tables, seven subjects
Chapter 72 opens by restating what each planet signifies. The Sun: the soul, nature, physical strength, the father. The Moon: mind, wisdom, happiness, mother. Mars: co-borns, valour, qualities, land. Mercury: business, sources of livelihood.
That is not throat-clearing. It is the key to reading the whole system.
A planet’s Aṣṭakavarga speaks to that planet’s subjects.
A high bindu count in the 4th sign of the Sun’s Aṣṭakavarga is a statement about the Sun’s matters — vitality, the father, standing — as they touch that sign. It is not a general endorsement of the 4th house.
Note also that the significations here are the kārakas from Chapter 34 in Week 5. The system reuses the natural significators rather than inventing new ones — another small piece of internal coherence, and one that makes the tables easier to remember.
The new use: transits
Everything else in this course reads a static chart. Aṣṭakavarga is the first instrument that systematically asks what happens when a moving planet arrives somewhere.
Verses 7 to 11 build readings from exactly that: a computed point derived from the bindus, and then the transit of Saturn across it.
The general principle, which is what modern practice takes from this chapter: a planet transiting a sign with a high bindu count in its own Aṣṭakavarga fares better there than one transiting a low-count sign.
That is the system’s most distinctive contribution and it is why Aṣṭakavarga is so heavily used in transit work.
Two things to hold about it.
Saturn dominates for a practical reason. A Saturn transit through a sign lasts about two and a half years — long enough to structure a phase of life, and comparable in scale to an Antardaśā. Fast transits pass in days and are much harder to read as anything but background.
A transit judgment is a modifier, not a source. Exactly like a daśā. It says how a period of contact is likely to go, given what the chart already promises. A difficult Saturn transit over a house whose matters the chart barely supports will not produce much — there is nothing there to be difficult about.
A fourth longevity instrument
Chapter 73 gives longevity from Aṣṭakavarga.
You already have three systems from Chapter 45 — Piṇḍāyu, Aṁśāyu, Naisargāyu — which routinely disagree with each other. What does a fourth add?
Go back to Chapter 68 verses 5 and 6: this system will neither contradict nor repeat what came before.
So the Aṣṭakavarga indication is not a fourth estimate to average in. It is a differently-founded measure — built on counting rather than on dignity or division — and the useful information is in whether it clusters with the others or stands apart.
Clustering: the chart speaks relatively firmly on this question.
Scattering: it does not, and that is the finding.
The standing position from Week 7 is unchanged and worth restating here, because a fourth instrument is exactly the kind of thing that tempts people to think the picture has firmed up. It has not. The output remains a band and a confidence, not a date, and this course does not train you to announce death dates.
Next: the collective figure, which is what most practitioners actually use.

1-6: The attributes like, the soul (आत्मा), nature, strength (physical); father are to be considered from the Sun. The mind, wisdom, happiness, mother are signified by the Moon. The matters to be reckoned from Mars are, co-borns, valour, qualities, land. Business matters, sources of livelihood and friends be considered from Mercury. Jupiter will signify body's nourishments, education, children, wealth and property. The matters relating to the marriage, sexual relations, vehicle (conveyance), prostitution, sexual union with the women are to be contemplated from Venus. Longevity, means of life support, distress, sorrow, fear, losses of all kinds and death are to be reckoned from Saturn.
The Rekhas of the house (sign) under the consideration be multiplied by the (total) Shodya Pinda (योग पिंड) of the concerned Ashtakavarga and the product be divided by 27. The remainder be taken as a unit number for the Nakashatra to be counted from Aswini Nakshatra onward. The transit of Saturn over that Nakashatra will prove harmful for the native.

7-9 : The 9th house from the sign of the natal Sun denotes father. Therefore, the (benefic) Rekhas of that sign' in the Sun's Ashtakavarga be multiplied by the total Pinda of the Sun's Ashtakavarga. The product be divided by 27. The transit of Saturn over the Nakshatra denoted by the remainder number (counting it from the Aswini Nakshatra) will indicate distress for the father of the native. The trinal Nakshatras therefrom (10th or 19th Nakshatra) if also having the transit of Saturn, will also cause death or intense distress to the father or relatives alike father (uncle etc.) of the native.

10-11 : The benefic Rekhas (obtained by Aries sign in the Sun's Ashtakavarga) be multiplied by the total Pinda of the Sun's Ashtakavarga and the product be divided by 12. The sign denoted by the remainder and trinal signs (5th and 9th) therefrom are when transited by Saturn, the native's father suffers distress. Should there be the Dasa of an afflicted planet, it may cause even death of the father.

12-14 : If Rahu, Saturn or Mars, devoid of any benefic aspects, is placed 4th from the Sun at the time of the transit of the Saturn over the trinal signs (as described earlier), it will cause death to the father.
If Saturn is posited at the 9th position from Jupiter from the Ascendant or the Moon and is conjoined with or aspected by the malefic planets, the learned should predict the death of the father. The Dasa of the lord of the 4th house from the Ascendant will also attribute death of the father.
If (at that time) favourable Dasa is in operation, the learned should not predict such results.

15 : If the Ascendant of the native happens to be the 8th sign of his father or the 8th lord of the father is posited in the Ascendant of the native, that native will take over the left over duties (responsibilities) of the father after the death of his father.

16-18 : If the Dasa of the lord of the 4th house from the Ascendant is in operation, the father of the native will be bestowed happiness. If the lord of the 4th house from the Ascendant is posited in the Ascendant or in the 11th house or the lord of the 4th house from the Moon is located in the Ascendant, the 11th house or in the 10th house, the native will be obidient to his father.
If the sign of the Ascendant or the Moon of the native be the 3rd sign from the Ascendant or Moon of the father, that native will depend upon (inherit) the wealth of the father.
If the native takes birth in the sign (Ascendant) which is the 10th sign in the father's nativity, that native will acquire the qualities of his father. If the lord of the 10th house (of the native) is posited in the Ascendant, that native will gain better illustrious position than his father.
In this way, the previously stated similar results should also be assessed.

19-20: If a sign of the Sun's Ashtakavarga bears no Rekhas (more inauspicious Bindus instead) at number of places, in the month of that sign (i.e. during the transit of the Sun in that sign) and also during Samvatsar (संवत्सर-i.e. when Jupiter transits that sign), no marriages, fasting or any other auspicious functions be performed. However, if that sign secures more number of Rekhas, one should undertake auspicious works during the transit of the Sun in that sign or transit of Jupiter that sign.

21-23 : In the same manner, which ever sign secures. more places devoid of Rekhas (or more number of Bindus), the auspicious works should be avoided during the transit of the Moon in that sign.
One should assess results related to Mother, house and village (or town) from the 4th house from the Moon. Therefore, the number of Rekhas in the 4th house from the Moon be multiplied by the total Pinda (Rashi Pinda and Graha Pinda put togather) then divide the product by 27 (Nos. of Nakshatras) and the transit of Saturn over the Nakshatra falling at the number denoted by the remainder (from Aswini) will indicate the death of the mother. Further, the product be divided by 12 (number of signs) and the sign denoted by the remainder when gets the transit of Saturn, or over the 5th or the 9th sign therefrom, it will deliver distress to the mother.

24-27: From the Ashtakavarga of Mars, the brothers, valour, courage, patience etc. are assessed. The third house from Mars denotes brothers (co-borns)
After Trikona Shodhan, which ever sign has more number, the transit of Mars in that sign will give gains of property and woman (marriage) and affection from the brothers (co-borns). The sign if left with no number after the trikona Shodhana (reduction), the transit of Mars over that sign will produce distress for the brothers (co-borns).
The (total) Shodya Pinda (क्षोद्या पिंड) of Mars be multiplied by the number of Rekhas contained in the 3rd place from Mars and the product be divided by 27 (Nos. of Nakshatras). When the Nakshatra falling at the number denoted by the remainder and Trinal Nakshatras therefrom (10th and 19th) and the sign indicated by the remainder number after dividing the product by 12 and its trinal signs (5th and 9th) are transited by Saturn, it will cause distress to the borthers (co borns).

28-29: The 4th place (स्थान) from the sign in which Mercury is posited signifies family, friends, maternal uncle etc. The sign bearing more number of Rekhas in the Ashtakavarga of Mercury. The transit of Mercury over that sign will confer happiness to them (family, maternal uncle, friends etc.).
After carrying out the Shodhanas of the Ashtakavarga of Mercury, the Nakshatras so obtained are when transited by Saturn, it will indicate distress to the family, friends, maternal uncle etc. In order words, the Shodya Pinda obtained after applying Trikona and Ekadhipatya Shodhanas in the Ashtakavarga of Mercury be multiplied by Rekhas of sign harbouring Mercury and the product be divid by 27. The Nakshatra denoted by the number of the remainder and the trinal Nakshatras there from (10th and 19th) are when transit by Saturn will cause distress to the family etc. In the same manner, the product be divided by 12 (Nos. of signs) and the sign indicated by the remainder and the 5th and the 9th signs therefrom are when transited by Saturn, brings about distress to the family, friends, maternal uncle etc.

30-33 : From the 5th place to Jupiter, knowledge, religion, and son (children) are to be considered. If the sign at the 5th places containing more Rekhas, it will deliver happiness of the children. The number of Rekhas in the sign at the 5th place denotes that many number of children provided this sign being other than the sign of debilitation viz. Capricorn. Besides, the number of children may also be equal to the number of Rekhas in the Navamsa of the 5th house (from the Ascendant).
In the Ashtakavarga of Jupiter, the number of Rekhas in the sign, 5th from the Jupiter be multiplied by the (total) Shodya Pinda of the Jupiter's Ashtakavarga. The product be divided by 27 and the transit of Saturn over the Nakshatra denoted by the remainder and the trinal Nakshatras (10th and 19th) therefrom and also the sign indicated by the remainder obtained on dividing. the product by 12 and the trinal (5th and 9th) signs therefrom, will bring distress to the children and will also affect the knowledge and religion.

Total up the number of Rekhas from the Ascendant to Saturn. The disease and enmity will be indicative in the year equal to the total number of the Rekhas. Also total up the Rekhas from Saturn to the Ascendant in the Ashtakavarga of Saturn and the danger of disease in the year equivalent to the total Rekhas be predicted. The sum total of both these number of Rekhas will denote the year in which death or death like distress will be indicative. If the Dasa causing Arishta (अरिष्ठ) also falls at the same period, it will inflict the death to the native.

1-4: The Sage Parasara said Now, I will explain the procedure of fixing the longevity through the use of Ashtakavarga (system). The Ashtakavarga's Ayu has been fixed as the sign bearing 'no' Rekha will get two days; sign with one Rekha is assigned one and a half days; with four Rekhas - seven and a half days; with five Rekhas - two years; with six Rekhas - four years; with seven Rekhas six years and the eight Rekhas will attribute 8 years of Ayu. In this manner, study the number of the Rekhas in all the signs of the Ashtakavargas of all the planets and total up the Ayu contributed by them. Half the sum will denote Ashtakavarga's Ayu (longevity).
Practice
Chapter 72 opens by restating what each planet signifies — the Sun for soul, nature, strength and father; the Moon for mind, wisdom, happiness and mother; and so on. Why does the chapter start there?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Because a planet's Aṣṭakavarga speaks to that planet's subjects. The Sun's bindu table is about the Sun's matters, not about the chart generally.
This is the discipline most easily lost. A high bindu count in the 4th sign of the Sun's Aṣṭakavarga is a statement about the Sun's affairs as they touch that sign — not a general endorsement of the 4th house. Seven separate tables, seven separate subjects, and Sarvāṣṭakavarga in Chapter 74 is what combines them.

What is new about Chapter 72's use of bindus?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: It reads them against transits — what happens when a planet crosses a sign with a given bindu count.
Everything else in this course reads a static chart. Aṣṭakavarga is the first instrument that systematically asks what happens when a moving planet arrives somewhere, and the bindu count of the sign it arrives in is the measure of how that arrival goes. That is why Aṣṭakavarga is so heavily used in modern transit practice, and it is the system's most distinctive contribution.

Chapter 73 gives longevity from Aṣṭakavarga. You already have three systems from Chapter 45. What does a fourth add?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: An independent check, built on counting rather than on dignity or division — so agreement or disagreement with the other three is genuinely informative.
Recall Chapter 68's framing: this system will neither contradict nor repeat what came before. So the Aṣṭakavarga longevity indication is not a fourth estimate to average with the others. It is a differently-founded measure. Where it clusters with the Chapter 45 systems, the indication is firmer; where it stands apart, the chart is not speaking clearly on this question. And the standing position from Week 7 is unchanged: the output is a band and a confidence, not a date.

Saturn is about to transit a sign with a low bindu count in its own Aṣṭakavarga. What does that suggest, and what does it not?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: That the transit is likely to be more difficult than the same transit through a high-count sign. It does not say what will happen, or that anything will.
A transit judgment is a modifier on a natal promise, in exactly the way a daśā is. It says how a period of contact is likely to go, given what the chart already supports. A low-count Saturn transit over a house whose matters the chart barely promises will not produce much of anything — there is nothing there to be difficult about.
Why does the course teach transit judgment through Aṣṭakavarga rather than as a separate subject?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Because this is where BPHS itself locates it, and because the bindu count supplies the measure a transit judgment otherwise lacks.
There is a fuller transit doctrine in the wider tradition — Vedha, Gochara from the Moon, and much else — which BPHS does not develop and this course therefore does not teach. What Chapter 72 gives is a specific, well-founded transit method tied to a quantity you can compute. That is worth having and it is not a complete transit training, and the course says so.

Aṣṭakavarga reads a planet's chart against that planet's own subjects, which is a discipline worth building deliberately — it is easy to read a bindu table as if it were about houses in general.
- Take the Sun's reduced Aṣṭakavarga for Chart B. Chapter 72 verse 1 says the Sun signifies the soul, nature, physical strength and the father. So this table speaks to those subjects, not to everything.
- Which signs carry the highest counts, and which houses are those? Write one sentence relating the high-count signs to the Sun's subjects specifically.
- Now the 9th sign from the natal Sun — the father's place counted from the significator. What is its bindu count? Chapter 72 verses 7–11 build a transit reading from exactly this.
- Build one more bhinnāṣṭakavarga — Saturn's — using software this time, and note which signs carry high and low counts.
- Finally: pick one house you judged in the Module 2 clinic and note what the bindu counts say about it. Do not resolve any disagreement yet. Record it for the clinic at the end of this week.

Answer from memory first. Looking back at the reading before you try turns a memory test into a copying exercise.
What does the Sun's Aṣṭakavarga speak to, and what does Mars's?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: The Sun's — soul, nature, physical strength, father. Mars's — co-borns, valour, qualities, land.
Straight from Chapter 72 verses 1–6, and it is the same set of kāraka significations you met in Chapter 34 in Week 5. The system reuses the natural significators rather than inventing new ones, which is another small piece of internal coherence.

A house has a high count in one planet's Aṣṭakavarga and a low count in another's. Is that a contradiction?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: No. The two tables are about different subjects.
A sign well supported in Jupiter's Aṣṭakavarga and poorly supported in Mars's says that the area is favourable for Jupiter's matters — knowledge, children, expansion — and less so for Mars's. Reading the two as competing scores for the same thing is the commonest error in using the system, and it comes from skipping Chapter 72's opening verses.
Chapter 72's transit readings often specify Saturn. Why Saturn particularly?

Answer: Because Saturn is the slowest of the seven and its transits are long enough to be treated as periods in their own right.
A Saturn transit through a sign lasts about two and a half years — long enough to structure a phase of life, and comparable in scale to an Antardaśā. Fast transits pass in days and are correspondingly harder to read as anything but background. That is a practical reason rather than a doctrinal one, and it explains why Saturn dominates transit discussion generally.
Where would you look for what a planet's Aṣṭakavarga signifies, and where for longevity from Aṣṭakavarga?

Answer: Chapter 72 verses 1–6; Chapter 73.
And Chapter 74 for the collective figure, which is where the practical payoff of the whole system is. Three consecutive chapters, three different uses.
What you carry forward
Two things grow across the whole course. This unit adds to both.
To your chart-analysis process
- **Step 8 (extended).** Read each planet's Aṣṭakavarga against that planet's own subjects. Use bindu counts for transit judgment, as a modifier on the natal promise.
To your field manual
- A planet's Aṣṭakavarga speaks to THAT PLANET'S subjects (72.1–6): Sun — soul, nature, strength, father. Moon — mind, wisdom, happiness, mother. Mars — siblings, valour, land. Mercury — business, livelihood. And so on, following the kārakas of Ch. 34.
- High and low counts in different planets' tables for the same sign are not contradictory — they are about different subjects.
- Transit judgment (72.7–11): a planet crossing a high-bindu sign fares better than one crossing a low-bindu sign. Saturn dominates because its transits last ~2.5 years.
- A transit judgment is a MODIFIER on a natal promise, exactly as a daśā is.
- Ch. 73 gives a fourth longevity instrument, independently founded. Compare it with Ch. 45's three; clustering means firmer, scattering means the chart is not speaking clearly. The output remains a band.
- BPHS does not develop a full transit doctrine — no Vedha, no systematic Gochara. This course teaches the Aṣṭakavarga method only and says so.
By now you should be able to
- Read a bhinnāṣṭakavarga against the subjects its planet signifies
- Use bindu counts for transit judgment
- Compare the Aṣṭakavarga longevity indication with Chapter 45's systems
- Say what a fourth disagreeing instrument tells you
