Week 11 · Unit 3 · Ashtakavarga and Additional Classical Methods
Milestone 3 of 5: The whole-chart score
The Whole-Chart Score
Sarvāṣṭakavarga — the practical payoff of the entire system, and how to use it against a judgment you already made.
Assumes you have done: Units 1 and 2 of this week
Why this matters
This is the output most practitioners actually use, and it is the simplest thing in the whole Aṣṭakavarga block: one number per sign, summing all seven planets' contributions. Parashara gives thresholds for reading it. What makes it valuable is not the number but what you do with it — because you now have a chart you judged weeks ago, and an independent instrument to check it against.
Learn
The simplest thing in the whole Aṣṭakavarga block, and the one most practitioners actually use.
Construction
Sum the reduced bindu counts of all seven planets’ Aṣṭakavargas, sign by sign. Twelve totals.
They always sum to 337. That is fixed by the system, in every chart ever cast, and it is your third built-in self-check — after the per-planet totals from Week 10 and the appearance of zeros after reduction from Week 11 unit 1.
If your twelve figures do not sum to 337, something upstream has gone wrong, most often that the reductions were applied inconsistently across the seven tables.
The thresholds
Parashara gives them in verses 3 to 6: above 30 rekhas produces medium results; below 25, distressful ones; and more generally, more is better, fewer is worse, and middling is middling.
Notice that 30 is called medium.
The average per sign is 337 ÷ 12, which is about 28. So the thresholds sit close on either side of the mean — 30 is slightly above average, not exceptional, and Parashara’s language is calibrated accordingly.
Reading houses against each other
Verses 7 and 8 do something more interesting than thresholds, and it is worth having as a general method.
If the 11th house has more rekhas than the 10th, and the 12th has fewer than the 11th, and the Lagna has more — that native will be fortunate and wealthy.
Read the shape rather than the numbers. Inflow (11th) exceeding action (10th). Outflow (12th) below inflow (11th). And a strong self (1st).
That is a description of a life where gains outrun effort and expenditure stays below gains. It is read entirely from relationships between adjacent totals, and it is robust to whatever the chart’s overall level happens to be.
Relative reading of this kind is often more informative than absolute thresholds, and it is the technique worth taking from this chapter.
The exercise this module exists for
Now the part that matters, and it is not a calculation.
You judged Chart B in the Module 2 clinic, using houses, lords and Chapter 13’s rule. You revised those judgments in the Module 3 clinic, using strength. You extended them in Module 4, using functional nature and yogas.
Now you have an instrument that Parashara says will neither contradict nor repeat any of it.
Take three specific conclusions and check them.
For each, one of three outcomes:
Confirmed. The collective support agrees. Your confidence goes up, and you can say why in terms of two independent measures.
Revised. The support clearly contradicts the reading, and on examination the earlier judgment rested on something weaker than it looked.
Confidence downgraded. The two disagree and you cannot tell which is right. That is a legitimate and common outcome, and recording it honestly is worth more than forcing a resolution.
Why revision keeps being asked of you
This is the third time the course has required you to go back and change something you concluded earlier. Week 5 revised Module 2’s readings with strength. Week 6 revised them again with functional nature. Now Aṣṭakavarga.
That repetition is deliberate. Revising a conclusion you have committed to is harder than forming one, and it is the skill that separates a practitioner who improves from one who defends their first impression indefinitely.
Most people find the first time uncomfortable and the third routine. Week 13 requires it under assessment, and by then it should be ordinary.
One unit left in the module, and it is three unrelated instruments read more lightly.

1-2: Maharishi Parasara said - O, Brahmin! Draw out the twelve compartments (कोष्ठ) of the birth diagram (chakra) and fix all the houses including the Ascendant. Place sum total of the Rekhas of Ashtakavarga of each sign in the Chakra. This is called Samudaya (Collective) Ashtakavarga. Through this, the results for the native are delineated.

3-5 : In the Samudaya Chakra, the sign which has secured more than 30 Rekhas will deliver medium results and in the same way, the signs holding less then 25 Rekhas, their results will be distressful. The planning of propitious work should be done in the signs capable of delivering auspicious results. O superior Brahmin! Auspicious work should be relegated during the distress giving signs. The planet posited in the superior signs is considered auspicious and in other signs as inauspicious.

Verse 66: The results of the houses should be studied in consistence with the density of the Rekhas in each house. If the number of Rekhas are more, the results would be extremely good and should the Rekhas are less in number, it will deliver bad results. If the number of Rekhas are neither less nor more, the results of the same magnitude be predicted.

7-8 : If the 11th house of the Samudaya Ashtakvarga is having more Rekhas than the Rekhas of the 10th house and if the Rekhas of the 12th house are less than the Rekhas of the 11th house, and the Ascendant has more Rekhas; that native will be fortunate (he will enjoy comforts of all kinds) and wealthy. In the reverse situation (that is 12th house holds more Rekhas than the 11th house and the Ascendant also possesses less Rekhas), the native will definitely labour under poverty.

9-10: Like the results of the Dasas, the results of the houses should also be predicted from the three sections (segments). The segment (Khanda) which is having the malefic planets, that part is considered distressful. The segment (Khanda) which holds benefic planets that part will deliver auspicious results and the segment possessing mixed planets (both benefic and malefic) will deliver mixed results. The result from the Ascendant to the 4th house will be of the childhood. From the 5th to the 8th houses, the result of the adulthood and houses between 9th and the 12th will produce the results of the old age.

11-28: Samudaya Ashtakavarga, if contains 7 or less than 7 rekhas, there will be fear of death of the native in the same month (that is, in the month the Sun passes through said sign). For the purpose of propitiation (शान्ति) 20 Pala (Pala or Tola equivalent to 11.5 gms) Gold and 2 heaps of sesamum seeds (heap symbalizing mountain) should be given in charity.
If a sign is holding 8 Rekhas, there will be the chances of the death in that very month. For the alleviation of this affliction, 'Tuladana' of camphor (weighting equivalent to natives weight be undertaken.
If a sign is possessing 9 Rekhas, it will cause danger from the snakes in that solar month (Sun over such sign). To mitigate this ill effect, a chariot driven by four horses be donated in charity.
If a sign is holding 10 Rekhas, it will produce danger from weapons in that solar month, in order to mitigate the evil effects, an armour alongwith Vajra (weapon) should be given in charity.
O Vipra! when a sign secures 11 Rekhas, there will be possibility of getting disgraced in that (solar) month. For propitiation, an idol of the Moon (चन्द्रमा) made out of 10 Palas of gold be donated in charity.
The sign which is containing 12 Rekhas will cause danger of death by drowning in that (solar) month. The charity of (agricultural) land with the crop of the foodgrain to the Brahmins will confer auspicious effects.
The sign having 13 Rekhas will produce danger of death by the tiger (wild animals) in the (solar) month. In order to ward off the evil effects, an idol of Lord Vishnu (हिरण्यगर्भ विष्णु भगवान) be given in charity.
If a sign which is occupied with the 14 Rekhas, there will be danger of death in the solar month. For the propitiation, an idol of Varaha Moorti (वराहमूर्ति) made in gold be given in charity.
If a sign is containing 15 Rekhas, there will be danger from the king (authorities) in that Solar month. An elephant be donated in charity to get alleviation from this ill effect.
The sign which possesses 16 Rekhas, in the solar month of that sign, a great misfortune will be caused. A replica of Kalpa Vriksha (कल्प वृक्ष-A lengendry tree which fulfils desires) made in gold be given in charity which will ward off this evil effect.
The sign which contains 17 Rekhas, in the (solar) month of that sign, there will be danger from diseases. In order to get this affliction alleviated, a cow and jaggery be given in charity.
The sign which secures 18 Rekhas, the solar month of that sign will cause disputes (conflicts etc.). For propitiation, cow, gems, land and gold be denoted in chairty.
Positioning of 19 Rekhas in a sign will lead to residing in a foreign land (banishment from his homeland) in the (solar) month of such sign. Propitiations be performed with proper rituals to get relief.
Occupation of 20 Rekha in a sign will cause loss of intelligence (prudence) in the (solar) month of that sign. To atone the ill effect, Lord Ganesha be worshipped.
The sign with 21 Rekhas will produce disease and distress in the solar month of that sign. For the alleviation of such an evil effect, food grains in a heap form (structured as a replica of a mountain) be denoted in chairty.
The sign with 22 Rekhas will cause miseries to the brothers (of the natives) in the solar month of that sign. For the propitiation, a mirror be given in charity.
Positioning of 23 Rekhas in a sign will produce conflicts in the solar month of that sign. In order to mitigate this ill effect, an idol made in gold be given in charity.
In the solar month of a sign which is possessing 24 Rekhas, there will be loss of co-borns (death of brothers etc.). For the alleviation of such an evil effect, 10 cows should be given in charity and for getting relief from all the diseases, worship (Japa-जप) be performed.
The sign with 25 Rekhas will cause loss of prudence (wisdom) in the corresponding (solar) month of that sign. For the propitiation of this malefic effect, the Japa (जप) of Goddess Saraswati (सरस्वती) be performed.
The sign which is possessing 26 Rekhas, the corresponding solar month of that sign will cause loss of wealth. Japa of Shri Sookta (श्री सूक्त जप) be performed for the alleviation of such evil effects.
Positioning of 28 Rekhas in a sign will produce all round losses during the corresponding month (solar) of the sign. Havana (हवन) of the Sun with complete rituals be performed for seeking happiness.
The solar month of the sign securing 29 Rekhas will cause. anxiety over the worries. To ward off the evil effect, Ghee, clothes and gold be given in charity.
The sign which is possessed with 30 Rekha, that solar month of the sign will be full of prosperity and happiness.

29: Possessing more than 30 Rekhas [i.e., the sign having secured Rekhas in excess of 30, in the month (solar), Samvatsar (d) and Nakshatra] will confer accretion of wealth, children and happiness. If there are more than 40 Rekhas (in a sign), it will give boost to pious deeds, wealth (Laxmi - लक्ष्मी) and fame.

30-31 : A pure sign (auspicious sign) in the Ashtakavarga is deemed to be auspicious in all the works. Therefore, auspiciousness of the Ashtakavarga (Samudaya) be established for all the auspicious functions. The auspicious transiting position will only become necessary to be checked when auspicious (Samudaya) Ashtakavarga (sign of Ashtakavarga) is not available. Once the auspiciousness of the Ashtakavarga (sign) is ascertained, the sanctification of the transit (auspicious time of the transit) becomes redundant.
Practice
How is a Sarvāṣṭakavarga built, and what is its fixed total?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: By summing the reduced bindu counts of all seven planets' Aṣṭakavargas for each sign. The twelve totals always sum to 337.
That fixed total is another built-in self-check, like the per-planet totals from Week 10. If your twelve figures do not sum to 337, something upstream is wrong — most often that reductions were applied inconsistently across the seven tables.

State Parashara's thresholds.
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Above 30 rekhas: medium results. Below 25: distressful results. And the general rule that more rekhas means better results, fewer means worse, and middling means middling.
Note that Parashara calls above 30 medium rather than excellent, which surprises people. With an average of about 28 per sign — 337 divided by twelve — the thresholds sit close on either side of the mean. So 30 is slightly above average, not exceptional, and the language is calibrated accordingly.

Verses 7–8 give a combination: the 11th higher than the 10th, the 12th lower than the 11th, and the Lagna high. What does it indicate, and why is the shape interesting?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: That the native will be fortunate and wealthy. The shape is interesting because it reads houses relative to each other rather than against absolute thresholds.
Inflow exceeding action, outflow less than inflow, and a strong self. That is a description of a life where gains outrun effort and expenditure stays below gains — and it is read entirely from the relationships between three adjacent totals. Relative reading of this kind is often more informative than the absolute numbers, because it is robust to whatever the chart's overall level happens to be.

Your Sarvāṣṭakavarga disagrees with a natal judgment you made in Week 4. What are the possibilities?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: The natal judgment was wrong; the Aṣṭakavarga is measuring something the natal judgment did not address; or both are right and the chart genuinely contains a tension.
All three occur and the third is the most common. A house can have a strong lord and low collective support — a capable agent working with little backing — and that is a real and specific configuration rather than a contradiction. What you must not do is quietly pick the one you prefer. Name which of the three you think is happening, and say why.
What does Sarvāṣṭakavarga add that the individual Aṣṭakavargas do not?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: A single measure of how much collective support each part of the zodiac has, across all subjects rather than one planet's.
The individual tables are subject-specific — the Sun's about vitality and the father, Mars's about siblings and land. Sarvāṣṭakavarga is the aggregate: how much of the chart's total weight falls on each sign. That is the right instrument for a general question about a house, and the individual tables are right for a specific one.
Apply it to a chart
Chart B — Albert Einstein, the synthesis chart — A whole documented life, where the evidence pulls in more than one direction. · about 30 min

| Mars | Capricorn | 8 | 4°44'52" | Uttara Ashadha 3 | exalted |
| Mercury | Pisces | 10 | 10°58'43" | Uttara Bhadrapada 3 | debilitated |
| Jupiter | Aquarius | 9 | 5°19'05" | Dhanishtha 4 | neutral |

| Saturn | Pisces | 10 | 12°01'26" | Uttara Bhadrapada 3 | neutral |
| Rahu | Capricorn | 8 | 9°18'36" | Uttara Ashadha 4 | not assigned in BPHS |
| Ketu | Cancer | 2 | 9°18'36" | Pushya 2 | not assigned in BPHS |
| Lagna | Gemini | 1 | 19°38'02" | Ardra | lord Mercury |
The exercise here is a comparison, and it is the one this whole module was built for. You judged this chart in Week 4 and again in Week 5. Now check it.
- Produce the Sarvāṣṭakavarga for Chart B by software. Twelve totals, and they should sum to 337 — the fixed total of the system.
- Mark each house against Parashara's thresholds: above 30, medium results; below 25, distressful; and read the extremes against each other.
- Apply verses 7–8: is the 11th house total higher than the 10th? Is the 12th lower than the 11th? Is the Lagna's total high? Note what the combination indicates.
- Now take three specific conclusions you wrote in the Module 2 clinic about this chart. For each, ask whether the Sarvāṣṭakavarga agrees, disagrees, or says nothing.
- For each of the three, write one of: confirmed, revised, or confidence downgraded — with the reason. Do not simply note the disagreements; act on them.
Check your understanding
Answer from memory first. Looking back at the reading before you try turns a memory test into a copying exercise.
A chart's 7th house has a Sarvāṣṭakavarga total of 22 and its lord is exalted in a Kendra. How do you read that?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Strong agent, weak collective support — the matters of the house are carried competently but with little backing from the chart as a whole.
A recognisable pattern, and one that you could not describe without both instruments. It is also a good example of Parashara's claim in Chapter 68 that this system would neither contradict nor repeat: the lordship reading and the bindu reading are both true and neither is derivable from the other.
Why is 30 described as "medium" when the average is about 28?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Because the thresholds are calibrated close to the mean — 30 is slightly above average rather than exceptional.
Worth knowing because it stops you over-reading modest figures. A house at 32 is doing somewhat better than the chart's average, not remarkably well. Genuine outliers in either direction are what deserve attention, and the spread across twelve houses tells you more than any single total.
Why does this course insist you revisit earlier conclusions rather than simply adding Aṣṭakavarga to new ones?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Because revising a conclusion you have already committed to is a harder and more important skill than forming a new one.
It was rehearsed in Week 5 when strength revised the Module 2 readings, it is repeated here, and it is required in Week 13. Most people find the first time uncomfortable and the third routine, which is the intended trajectory — because a practitioner who cannot revise will defend a first impression indefinitely.
Where is Sarvāṣṭakavarga, and what precedes and follows it?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Chapter 74. Preceded by the reductions (69–71) and the interpretive chapters (72–73); followed by planetary rays (75) and the Sudarśana Chakra (76).
Chapter 74 is the culmination of the seven-chapter block that began at Chapter 68. Knowing that structure means you know that Chapter 74's figures depend on everything before them — which is why an error anywhere in 68–71 surfaces here.
What you carry forward
Two things grow across the whole course. This unit adds to both.
To your chart-analysis process
- **Step 8 (completed) — assess dignity, strength, support and affliction.** Dignity, Ṣaḍbala, functional nature, Avasthā and Aṣṭakavarga support. Where the collective support and the lordship reading disagree, name the disagreement rather than resolving it.
To your field manual
- Sarvāṣṭakavarga: sum the reduced bindus of all seven planets for each sign. The twelve totals always sum to 337 — use it as a self-check.
- Average per sign is about 28. Thresholds (74.3–6): above 30 medium, below 25 distressful. 30 is slightly above average, not exceptional.
- Relative reading is often more informative than absolute: 11th above 10th, 12th below 11th, Lagna high, indicates fortune and wealth (74.7–8).
- Sarvāṣṭakavarga measures collective support across all subjects. The individual tables are subject-specific. Use the aggregate for general questions, the individual for specific ones.
- Strong lord + low SAV = capable agent, little backing. Weak lord + high SAV = strong backing, weak agent. Both are real configurations.
- When SAV disagrees with an earlier judgment, name which is happening: the judgment was wrong, the instruments measure different things, or the chart contains a genuine tension.
By now you should be able to
- Construct a Sarvāṣṭakavarga and state its thresholds
- Read which houses in a chart are genuinely supported
- Use relationships between adjacent houses' totals
- Compare a Sarvāṣṭakavarga reading against a natal judgment made earlier
