Week 11 · Unit 4 · Ashtakavarga and Additional Classical Methods
Milestone 4 of 5: Three lagnas and five great men
Three Lagnas and Five Great Men
Planetary rays, the Sudarśana Chakra, and the Pañchamahāpuruṣa yogas — three instruments, one of them famous.
Assumes you have done: The re-anchoring technique, met six times since Week 2
Why this matters
Three chapters that do not belong together except by position, and one of them matters a great deal. The Sudarśana Chakra formalises something you have met six times already — reading from more than one anchor — and does it with three at once. The Pañchamahāpuruṣa yogas are among the most cited in all of Jyotish and, predictably, among the most often claimed without checking whether they can deliver.
Learn
Three chapters that share nothing but position in the book, and one of them matters a great deal.
Planetary rays, read once
Chapter 75 gives an additional strength measure based on rays.
Read it. Then set it down, and be able to say why: nothing downstream in BPHS depends on it, Ṣaḍbala already supplies a six-component strength measure, and adding a seventh incommensurable scale does not improve a judgment.
That is the Reference test applied by usage rather than by preference, and it is the same judgment the course made about Niṣeka Lagna, Varṇada Daśā, Viṁśopaka Bala and the Śayanādi Avasthās. You have encountered it, you know what it is for, you know where to find it, and it is not in your working process.
The Sudarśana Chakra
Chapter 76 is more interesting, and it costs almost nothing to learn because you have met its central idea six times already.
The construction, from verses 4 to 6: draw three concentric circles about one centre, divided into twelve compartments by twelve lines from the middle.
In the inner ring, write the houses from the Lagna, with the planets in them.
In the middle ring, the houses from the Moon.
In the outer ring, the houses from the Sun.
Then read all three together.
The practical value is convergence. Read a house from all three anchors:
- All three agree — the indication is firm, and you can say so with more confidence than any one ring would justify.
- They diverge — the indication is soft, and the pattern of divergence is itself informative. A house strong from the Lagna and weak from the Moon describes something that works in fact and not in feeling, which is a distinction people recognise immediately when it is put to them.
The five great men
Chapter 77 gives the Pañchamahāpuruṣa yogas, and they are among the most cited combinations in all of Jyotish.
Verses 1 and 2 give the formation condition in one sentence, and it is worth reading exactly:
If powerful and dignified Mars etc. planets, being in their own or exaltation signs, are posited in the Angular houses, it will give rise to Ruchaka, Bhadra, Haṁsa, Mālavya and Śaśa kinds of Mahāpuruṣa Yogas.
Two conditions, simultaneously:
- The planet is in its own sign or exaltation.
- The planet is in a Kendra — the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th.
And only these five: Ruchaka (Mars), Bhadra (Mercury), Haṁsa (Jupiter), Mālavya (Venus), Śaśa (Saturn). The luminaries are excluded.
Then the same three questions as every yoga since Week 6.
Is it formed? Both conditions.
Is it blocked? What does the planet rule for this ascendant — does it carry a Trishadāya lordship? Is it in Mṛta Avasthā by degree, giving nil results whatever else is true? Is it afflicted by conjunction or aspect?
Can it deliver? Ṣaḍbala, functional nature, and what else the chart supports.
An exalted Jupiter in the 4th forms Haṁsa Yoga. For a Cancer ascendant that Jupiter rules the 6th and the 9th — a Trishadāya and a Trikoṇa. For an Aries ascendant it rules the 9th and 12th. Same yoga, quite different implications, and neither is “a distinguished life” without a great deal more evidence.
Where Module 6 leaves you
You now have every major instrument BPHS supplies for natal and timing work.
Houses and their principles. Lords and where they carry things. Four independent readings of a planet’s condition. Functional nature. Yogas with their blocking and delivery conditions. Material promise. Longevity as a band. Mārakas. The full Viṁśottarī ladder with a stopping rule. And now an independent second opinion in Aṣṭakavarga, plus a whole-chart view from three anchors.
That is the toolkit. Week 12 covers the specialised material — the karmic doctrine, the remedial framework, the difficult births, and Parashara’s own closing statement on practice — and then Week 13 assembles everything into one process.
Before that, the Module 6 clinic, which asks you to revise three conclusions rather than reach a new one.
Read BPHS
This is the source itself. The teaching above prepares you for it; it does not replace it.

1-22 : Maharishi Parasara said, O Superior Brahmin ! Now I will describe the planetary rays. In the state of deep exalation, the unit of the rays for the Sun etc. are respectively 10, 9, 5, 5, 7, 8 and 5 units. The unit of the rays at the deep debilitation point is nil and the unit of the rays for the point in between these two extreme points (the deep exaltation and the deep debilitation) is ascertained on a proportionate basis. In order to determine the rays of a particular planet, deduct the sign of debilitation from the longtitude of that planet and if the resultant turned out to be more than 6 signs, it should be subtracted from the 12 signs (if the resultant is less than 6 signs, it should be kept unaltered). The resultant is then multiplied by the unit of the rays assigned to such planet. The product be then divided by 6. The resultant will denote the number of rays of that planet.

3-7: O Vipra! some of the other Acharyas have indicated further refinements over the determined number of the rays. If a planet is posited in its sign of exaltation, the determined number of the rays are trebled. If it is in the Moola Trikona sign, the determined rays are to be doubled. In case of being in its own sign, the determined number is multiplied by 3 and then divided by 12. If a planet is in the Adhimitra's (best friend) sign, the determined rays be multiplied by 4 and then divided by 3. In the event of friendly sign, the determined rays be multiplied by 6 and then divided by 5. In case of planet being in the enemy sign, the determined number of rays be brought down to half and if it is in the Adhishatru's sign (bitter enemy), the determined rays are first doubled and then divided by 5. If the planet is in the neutral sign, no correction is called far.
Barring Mercury and Venus, the number of rays in respect of all other planets will get annulled on getting combust. The learned astrolegers should delineate the results on the basis of the determined number of rays duly moderated (i.e. final net numbers).

20 : Like, a native is born in a Kshatrya family (securing total number of rays more the 50), he will be a an emperor. If the native is born in a Vaishya family (with the same count of rays), he will be a king. If the native takes birth in a Sudra family (under the same circumstances), he will be wealthy; and if the birth being in a Brahmin family, he will be highly learned, scholar and a religious person.

21 : The planets heading towards their sign of exaltation will give full results in accordance to the total number of the rays of such planets. If they are heading towards the sign of debilitation, the effects will be less (lessor than the actual results on the basis of the total number of rays obtained by the planet).

22-23 : O Brahmin ! The auspicious and inauspicious results are in occordance to the number of rays secured by any planet. The prognostication of the correct results without the knowledge of the number of rays will not be possible. Therefore, the scholars should determine the number of rays (of the planets) before predicting the results.

1-3 : Maharishi Parasara said - O Vipra! Now I divulge the secret of a supirior knowledge which Lord Brahma himself narrated for the welfare of the world at large. This is known as "Sudarshana Chakra" on the basis of which, the Astrologers will develop a clear insight of perdiction from the Ascendant and the houses, for the persons and their related auspicious and inauspicious results from birth through death, for every year, every month and every day.
एककेन्द्रोद्भवं रम्यं लिखेद् वृत्तत्रयं द्विज ! ।
द्वादशारं च तत् कुर्याद् भवेदेवं सुदर्शनम् ॥ ४ ॥
4 : O Brahmin ! Draw three circles keeping one centre. By drawing 12 lines from the centre forming 12 compartments (in each circle), it will create a Chakra known as Sudrashana Chakra.

5-6 : In the first circle (near to the Centre) write down all the houses including the Ascendant alongwith the planets in the twelve compartments. In the next circle, starting from the sign of the Moon's Ascendant (sign), place all the planets in their respective houses. In the outer circle commecing from the sign of the Sun (the sign holding Sun in it), fix all the planets in all the houses. In this manner, every house of the Chakra will have three signs.

7-9 : The pecularity of Sudarshana Chakra is that, the Ist house, the Ascendant, the Moon and the Sun get combined.Considering this (Ist house in respect of all the three) as Ascendant, the house of wealth (2nd house there from) etc. be reckoned. Thereafter, in accordance to the positions of the planets in these houses, the results be delineated. The Sun be considered aupicious in the Ascendant and inauspicious in the other houses. Malefic planets if are in the sign of exaltation or own sign, may not be treated as inauspicious. In this way, after looking into the auspiciousness and inauspiciousness of the planets, the results should be predicted.
यो भावः स्वामिसौम्याभ्यां युक्तो दृष्टोऽयमेधते ।
पापौर्दृष्टो युतो यो वा तस्य हानिः प्रजायते ॥ १० ॥
10 : The house which is harboured by its lord or posited with or aspected by the auspicious planets becomes powerful while the aspects and positioning of the malefic planets a house will make them weak.

एवं भावेषु खेटानां योगं दृष्टिं विलोक्य च ।
तारतम्येन वाच्यानि फलानि द्विजसत्तम ॥ १३ ॥
11-13 : The results of the combined houses, be considered on the basis of the presence of the planets over there. If a house is devoid of planet but receives the aspect, the results be stated accordingly. The house having the benefic planets will be auspicious and the house occupied by the malefics, will deliver inauspicious results. If a house holds mixed planets (both the benefic and malefic), the results will be auspicious, if the number of the benefic planets is more and if the malefic planets are more in numbers, the malefic results will prevail. In this manner, the combinations and the aspects of the planets to a particular house (i.e. the benefic aspects to a houses will deliver auspicious and malefic aspects to a house will cause inauspicious results) be taken into account and the result be stated in accordance to the factors which are more pronoduced.
यत्र नैव ग्रहः कश्चिन्न दृष्टिः कस्यचिद् भवेत् ।
तदा तद्भावजं ज्ञेयं तत्स्वामिवशतः फलम् ॥ १४ ॥
14 : If a house is neither occupied by the planets nor receiving the aspects, the results then be judged on the basis of the auspicious and inauspicious Karkatwas of the lord of the house.

15-16 : If a benefic planet is having many inauspicious Vargas, it is considered delivering malefic results. If a malefic planets occupy more number of auspicious Vargas, benefic results be predicted. The placement of a planet in the sign of exaltation, own sign and in the Vargas of the benefic planets will make the planet as auspicous and positioning of a planet in the enemy or debilitation signs or its divisions (six fold), renders the planet as inauspicious.
एवं सर्वेषु खेटेषु भावेष्वपि द्विजोत्तम ! ।

17 : Maharishi Parasara said-OBrahmin! In this manner, the auspiciousness and the inauspiciousness of the planets, and the houses be considered, for predicting the results of the concerned houses.

Verse 18½18-18½ : Maitreya said O Maharishi ! When the predictions for the natives could be made through Sudarshana Chakra why the other sages narrate the results from the Ascendant? I had only this much doubt and O-Lord, kindly clarify the same.

19-20 : Parasara said - If the Sun and the Moon are posited in the different signs other than the sign of the Ascendant, the results from the Sudarshna Chakra be only delineated. Between these three viz., the Ascendant (Lord), the Sun and the Moon, if two or all the three are posited in the Ascendant, the results be declared on the basis of the Ascendant.

21-23 : O Vipra! Now I will narrate the results of every year etc., from the Sudarshna Chakra in accordance to Dasa and Antardasa. Assigning one year to each house commencing from the Ascendant, assume every house as Ascendant for that very year and the following house as the 2nd house and soon. Thereafter, presume an Antardasa of one month in the every year in each house and then from the Ist house of the Antardasa, the 12 signs in seriatim, be assumed as 12 months which should be perceived as the results giving months connected with the 12 houses.
Similarly, commencing from the house identical with the month, each house be taken for the Pratyantar Dasa of two and a half days. Considering the sign of the Pratyantar Dasa as the Ascendant, the results of the 2nd, 3rd houses etc. be taken as the effects for two and half days each. In the same way, the Sookshma Dasa of 12½ hrs. is worked out and its results may also be considered in the same manner
तत् तल्लग्नात् केन्द्रकोणाष्टमे सौम्या: शुभप्रदाः ।

एवं प्रत्यब्दमासादौ भावानां फलचिन्तनम् ।

24-26 : If the Angular, Trinal and the 8th houses from the house emanating the Dasa, are occupied with the benefic planets, it (Dasa) will deliver auspicious results. Rahu and Ketu, occupying the houses will cause loss to such houses. The house holding more number of male cplanets gets destroyed. Barring the 6th and the 12th houses, the benefic planets in other houses bestow auspicious results. The malefic in the 3rd, 6th and 11th house give benefic results. (That is benefic planets in the 6th and the 12th house will do harm while malefic planets in the 3rd, the 6th and the 11th house will do good). In this manner, the results of every year, month, day etc. be assessed right from the time of birth.
Ten cycles of 12 houses from the Ascendant (12 years of each cycle) of Dasas or Antardasa should be considered. (The ten cycles of 12 houses make 120 years of Poorna Ayu, a full life cycle under Vimshottari Dasa system).

27-28 : Judging the results for the year, month, day etc., from the Sudarshana Chakra system and also analysing the same through Ashtakavarga system, the netresults be determined. When the same auspicious and inauspicious results are indicated from both these systems, then only the prognostications are declared. If there exist some difference in both these results, that is, one is showing auspiciousness and other is indicating inauspiciousness, then the results should be stated on the basis of the comparative strength of the case.

3-7: Features of Ruchaka Yoga :Apersonbornin Ruchaka Yoga will have longish face, over zealous, radiant but polite, extremely powerful, beautiful eye brows, black hair, refined tastes, fond of battle fields, dark red complexion, conqueror, intelligent, head of the thieves, cruel temperament, slender thighs, devout of Brahamins, holding ‘Veena’, ‘Yagra’, ‘Dhanush’, ‘Pasha’and ‘Vrishabha’ sign in his hands and having "Chakra-Rekha": well versed in incantation, occultism and employing the spells with malevolent purpose, having the height of hundred ‘Angulas’ with equal proportion of length of the face and the waist, equal to one thousand "Tulas (तुला)", ruler of Vindya and Sahasya Pradesh and will attain Swarga (heavens) at the age of 70 years and will die by weapon or fire.
The expression Tula (तुला) used in shlokas 3-7 is an ancient connotation of measuring units of the weight. The weight of the present coin of one Rupee is equal to one Karsha (कर्ष). Four Karshas make one Pala (पल) and Three hundred Palas form one Tula (तुला).

8-12: Features of Bhadra Yoga The native of Bhadra is imbued with the lion like radiance, well developed (muscular) chest with gait of elephant, long and muscular arms (thick), learned,. intelligent and skilled in Yogas, Satwaguni (सत्वगुर्णा), elegant feet, pretty moustaches and beard and lustful. Having the marks of conch (शंख), Chakra, Gada (गदा), arrow elephant, flag (ध्वजा) and plough (हल) on his feet and hands. Possesses lovely nose, expert in weaponary, adorns black and curly hairs, having an independant nature but is the protector of the family. Shares his luxuries and enjoyments with his friends, heavy weight (20 Tulas), Spends happy and comfortable life with his wife and children and as a ruler of Madhya Pradesh, he lives for hundred years.
The formation of Bhadra Yoga is restricted to Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces Ascendants. In all these four Ascendants for giving rise to Bhadra Yoga, there would have maximum eight possibilities i.e. two in each Ascendant, on the basis of changing of sign. Therefore, prognostication should be based on the predominance of Mercury in these signs and houses. However, the other influences on Mercury should also be taken into consideration. It is pertinent to state that the full effect of Bhadra Yoga could only be obtained when Mercury is sigularly posited in its own or exalted sign falling in the Angular houses and is also devoid of aspect from any planet and there should not be any kind of interference. This conviction becomes more true in the case of Sagittarius and Pisces Ascendants. In Gemini or Virgo Ascendant, if Mercury gets the conjunction of Venus, it may be construed as a compatible combination that too when Mercury is located in the Gemini sign and in which case this combination would be of Angular and Trinal houses and it will thus be backed by a Rajayoga. The conjunction of Venus with Mercury in Virgo will lower the effect of the Yoga on account of debilitation of Venus though Virgo is an exalted sign for Mercury and that would cause cancellat of debilitation. Nevertheless, it would affect the results of the Bhadra Yoga because it would certainly degrade the strength of Venus. The effect of connotation 'कामी' imbibed in these Shlokas is more pronounced in the event of the presence of Mercury and Venus in the Virgo sign because in this, Venus attains special overbearing effects and becomes a determing factor for a particular vocation.

State the Pañchamahāpuruṣa formation condition exactly.

Answer: One of Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn, powerful and dignified, in its own sign or exaltation sign, AND posited in a Kendra.
Both conditions, simultaneously. Dignity alone does not do it, and Kendra placement alone does not do it. That conjunction of requirements is what makes the yoga uncommon — and it is why claims of it are far more frequent than the configuration is. Note also that the luminaries are excluded: only the five non-luminous planets form these.

Name the five yogas and their planets.

Answer: Ruchaka — Mars. Bhadra — Mercury. Haṁsa — Jupiter. Mālavya — Venus. Śaśa — Saturn.
Worth having cold; they come up constantly. The order in verse 2 is Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, which is the order the chapter then describes them in — Ruchaka at verses 3–7, Bhadra at 8–12, Haṁsa at 13–16, and so on.

A chart has Haṁsa Yoga — Jupiter exalted in the 4th. Someone says this guarantees a distinguished life. What do you check?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Jupiter's Ṣaḍbala, its Avasthā, its functional nature for that ascendant, whether it is afflicted by conjunction or aspect, and what it rules.
For a Cancer ascendant, exalted Jupiter in the 4th rules the 6th and 9th — a Trishadāya and a Trikoṇa together. For an Aries ascendant it would be in Cancer in the 4th ruling the 9th and 12th. Different charts, same yoga, quite different implications. And a Jupiter in Mṛta Avasthā by degree gives nil results whatever else is true of it. Formation, blocking, delivery — the same three questions as every yoga since Week 6.
What is the Sudarśana Chakra and what does it do?

Answer: Three concentric rings reading the same chart from three anchors — the Lagna, the Moon and the Sun — with all twelve houses laid out from each.
Which is the re-anchoring technique formalised. You have met it as the special ascendants, as the 9th from the Sun, as the counted kārakas, as the Kārakāṁśa, as the running sign in Chara, and as the position from the Mahādaśā lord. Here three anchors are used simultaneously and compared. The practical value is convergence: where all three rings say the same thing about a house, the indication is firm; where they diverge, it is not.

What does Chapter 75's planetary rays measure that Ṣaḍbala does not?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Little that is genuinely additional — it is another strength measure, and this course reads it once and does not use it.
Being able to say that honestly is the outcome. Chapter 75 is a real technique and nothing downstream in BPHS depends on it, Ṣaḍbala already supplies a six-component strength measure, and adding a seventh incommensurable scale does not improve a judgment. That is the Reference test applied by usage: you have read it, you know where it is, and you know why it is not in your working process.
Apply it to a chart

The Pañchamahāpuruṣa check takes about a minute per chart and is worth doing on all three running charts, because the results are instructive.
- For each of Charts A, B and C, check every one of Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn against the formation condition: is the planet in its own sign or exaltation, AND in a Kendra from the Lagna? Both conditions, not one.
- Where a yoga forms, name it — Ruchaka for Mars, Bhadra for Mercury, Haṁsa for Jupiter, Mālavya for Venus, Śaśa for Saturn.
- Where a yoga forms, apply the delivery test from Week 6: what is the planet's Ṣaḍbala, its Avasthā, its functional nature for that ascendant, and is it afflicted by conjunction or aspect?
- Now the Sudarśana Chakra on Chart B: read the 10th house from the Lagna, then from the Moon, then from the Sun. Do the three agree about that area of life? Where they differ, what does the difference say?
- Write one sentence on what reading from three anchors added that reading from one did not.
Check your understanding
Answer from memory first. Looking back at the reading before you try turns a memory test into a copying exercise.
Mars is exalted in Capricorn in the 7th house. Does Ruchaka Yoga form?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Yes — exalted and in a Kendra, both conditions satisfied.
Then check delivery. What does Mars rule for that ascendant? What is its Ṣaḍbala and Avasthā? Is it conjunct or aspected by anything difficult? A formed Pañchamahāpuruṣa yoga is a real and uncommon configuration and it is still one factor among many.
Venus is in its own sign in the 2nd house. Does Mālavya Yoga form?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: No. The 2nd is not a Kendra.
Dignity without Kendra placement does not form the yoga. This is the most common false positive and it is worth checking deliberately, because "Venus in its own sign" feels like it should be enough and is not.
Chapter 77's translator's notes are described in the Volume 2 preface as his critical examination with his own examples. What follows?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: That a substantial part of what appears in this chapter is the translator's analysis rather than Parashara's verses, and should be cited as such.
The Pañchamahāpuruṣa yogas are among the most discussed in Jyotish, so this chapter attracted extensive commentary. It is useful commentary. It is not the source, and this is a chapter where the distinction is easy to lose because the notes are longer than the verses.
How many times has the re-anchoring technique now appeared in this course?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Seven: special ascendants (Ch. 6), the 9th from the Sun (Ch. 8), counted kārakas (Ch. 34), Kārakāṁśa as lagna (Ch. 35), the running sign in Chara (Ch. 52), position from the Mahādaśā lord (Ch. 54), and the Sudarśana Chakra (Ch. 76).
Seven appearances of one idea across the book. Recognising a recurring technique is worth more than learning any single instance of it, and by this point in the course you should be spotting it immediately — which is why Chapter 76 costs you almost nothing to learn.
What you carry forward
Two things grow across the whole course. This unit adds to both.
To your chart-analysis process
- **Step 10 (extended) — identify Yogas.** Include the Pañchamahāpuruṣa yogas, checked against both formation conditions. Where a whole-chart view is wanted, read the relevant house from the Lagna, the Moon and the Sun and note whether the three converge.
To your field manual
- Pañchamahāpuruṣa formation (77.1–2): one of Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn, in its own sign OR exaltation, AND in a Kendra. Both conditions. Luminaries excluded.
- The five: Ruchaka (Mars), Bhadra (Mercury), Haṁsa (Jupiter), Mālavya (Venus), Śaśa (Saturn).
- Most common false positive: dignity without Kendra placement.
- Sudarśana Chakra (76.4–6): three concentric rings reading all twelve houses from the Lagna, the Moon and the Sun. Convergence across the three means a firm indication; divergence means a soft one.
- Ch. 75 planetary rays: an additional strength measure, read once and not used — Ṣaḍbala already covers the ground and nothing downstream depends on it.
- Ch. 77's translator's notes are his own critical examination with his own examples, and are longer than the verses.
By now you should be able to
- Say what the Sudarśana Chakra does and how to read one
- State the Pañchamahāpuruṣa formation condition exactly
- Judge whether a Pañchamahāpuruṣa yoga present in a chart can deliver
- Distinguish Parashara's verses from the translator's examination in Chapter 77
