Week 12 · Unit 4 · Specialized Horoscopy, Remedies and Completion
Milestone 3 of 5: Karma carried forward
Karma Carried Forward
Chapters 85 and 86 — inherited difficulty and what BPHS prescribes in response, read as a matched pair.
Assumes you have done: Week 7's discipline on sensitive material — the three tests apply directly
Why this matters
This is the doctrinal heart of Volume 2 and the most serious material in the book. Chapter 85 gives the combinations Parashara associates with consequences carried from a previous birth; Chapter 86 gives the remedies. As with Ariṣṭa and its antidotes in Week 3, they are one argument and reading either alone misrepresents it. What matters most here is not the technique but what you do with it in front of a person.
Learn
The most serious material in the book, and the unit where what you say matters more than what you can calculate.
The attribution
Read verses 1 to 6 before anything else, because the framing is unusual.
Maitreya asks. Parashara says he will restate what Lord Shiva described when asked by Parvati. And the combinations are then given as Shiva’s reply.
A nested attribution, three levels deep.
The structure
Parvati’s question, in verses 5 and 6, asks for three things at once: what sin destroys children, what planetary combinations depict these effects, and what are the preventive propitiatory measures.
All three in one question. Which means the remedy is not an afterthought appended later — it is part of the original framing, and Chapter 85 supplies combinations and responses together.
You have met this architecture before. Ariṣṭa and its antidotes in Week 3. Yoga formation and its blocking. Argala and its obstruction. Rules and counterweights, adjacent, throughout.
A combination without its prescribed response is half of what Parashara wrote.
The remedial framework
Chapter 86 gives the general form, and it is worth having as a framework rather than a list.
An image of the afflicting planet is made in that planet’s own material: copper for the Sun, sphaṭika for the Moon, red sandalwood for Mars, gold for Mercury and Jupiter, silver for Venus, iron for Saturn, lead for Rahu, brass for Ketu. It is then propitiated with the offerings and observances appropriate to that planet.
Two things follow.
The materials come straight from Chapter 3’s correspondence tables in Week 1 — the metals assigned to each graha. Another case of early material being used late, and another reason the correspondence block was worth reading properly rather than skimming.
And once you have the framework — image in the planet’s own substance, directed at the planet causing the affliction — Chapters 87 to 98 become variations rather than twelve new things. That is what makes the next unit manageable.
How this material should be used
Here is the distinction that matters, and it is sharp.
Not as a diagnosis.
Telling someone their chart shows a curse carried from a previous birth is a statement about their moral history that they cannot examine, cannot contest, and will carry. It is also incomplete on the text’s own terms, since the combination comes with a prescribed response and the response is half the doctrine.
As a system of meaning, where it is wanted.
What the material is genuinely good for is a frame: a way of understanding recurring, structural difficulty as something inherited rather than as personal failure. For some people that frame is a relief, and it is one this tradition offers seriously.
Whether to offer it at all is a judgment about the person in front of you, not about the chart.
The written exercise
The apply section ends in a paragraph and that paragraph is the assessment.
Someone whose chart shows one of these combinations asks what it means. Write your actual answer, under two hundred words, in plain language, with any Sanskrit term you use explained on the spot.
Then apply the three tests from Week 7:
Is everything in it true? No reassurance you cannot support, and no alarm you cannot support.
Does it stay within the evidence? Which for Chart A means saying explicitly what you cannot assess, and for any chart means not extending a combination beyond what it states.
Does it leave the person better off than before they asked?
That third test is the one people fail, and it is worth being blunt about why. It is entirely possible to write something true and evidentially careful that a person will carry for years to no purpose. Passing the first two tests and failing the third is the main way this material does harm, and it does not show up in any technical assessment.
Week 13 assesses exactly this, on exactly this material.
Next: twelve short chapters, one framework, and Parashara’s last word.

This is the source itself. The teaching above prepares you for it; it does not replace it.

1-3: Maitreya said Hey Maharishi ! you have since enlightened me with the results severly for women and men. Hey Vedagya (वेदज्ञ) (scholar of Vedic scriptures) I am yet inquisitive to hear more from you. O Sage! I learnt from the Shastras that the soul of a childless person haunts after his death. O Lord ! Kindly explain what sin leads to childlessness ? How an astrologer will delineate its effects from the Ascendant and what propitiatory penance a childless person should undertake to have a child?

9-16: If Rahu is posited in the 5th house and aspected by Mars or similar combination is formed in Aries or Scorpio sign, it will cause childlessness due to the curse of the 'Snake' (नाग).
When lord of the 5th house conjoins with Rahu and Saturn forms conjunction with or aspects the Moon in the 5th house, it will cause loss of children attributed to the curse of the 'Snake'.
Should Jupiter conjoin Rahu, lord of the 5th house is weak, lord of the Ascendant is conjunct with Mars, there will be loss of children owing to the curse of the 'Snake'.
Conjunction of Jupiter and Mars, Rahu's position in the Ascendant, the 5th lord being in a Trik house (6th, 8th, 12th) will also give effect to the childlessness.
If 5th lord Mercury is in the Navamsa of Mars and conjoined with Mars, the ascendant contains Rahu and Mandi, the curse of 'Snake' will destroy the children (progeny).

34-50 : The Moon being lord of the 5th house, in debilitation and hemmed by the malefic planets and the 4th and 5th houses also contain malefic planets, will cause destruction of children due to the curse of the mother.
The position of Saturn in the 11th house, the 4th house containing a malefic planet and the Moon be in the sign of debilitation will destroy the children.
If the lord of the 5th house is posited in a Trik house (6th, 8th, 12th) duly debilitated and the Moon be in conjunction with the malefic planet, there will be loss of children attributed to the curse of the mother.
Similarly, if the lord of the 5th house is located in a Trik houses (6th, 8th, 12th) and the Moon being the Navamsa of a malefic planet and malefics are also posited in the Ascendant and the 5th house, it will cause childlessness ascribed to the curse of the mother.
The Moon being the lord of the 5th house duly conjunct with Saturn, Rahu, Mars is posited in the 5th or the 9th house, there will be loss of children as a result of the curse of the mother.
If Mars is the lord of the 4th house and connected with Saturn and Rahu and the Sun and the Moon being in the Ascendant or the 5th house, it will cause loss of children.
The Ascendant's lord and the 5th lord are located in the 6th house, the 4th lord being in the 8th house and the 10th and the 8th lords are in the Ascendant will bring about the loss of children due to the curse of the mother.
If the lords of the 6th and the 8th houses are situated in the Ascendant, the lord of the 4th house is posited in the 10th house, the Moon and Jupiter duly conjunct with the malefic planet are located in the 5th house, the curse of the mother will destroy the children.
When the Ascendant gets hemmed by the malefics and the Moon bereft of strength is posited in the 7th house and Rahu and Saturn respectively are situated in the 4th and the 5th houses, then mother's curse destroys the children.
If there is an exchange between the lords of the 8th and the 5th houses and the Moon and the lord of the 4th house are posited in the Trik houses (6th, 8th, 12th), it will cause loss of children.
In the nativity of Cancer Ascendant, if Mars or Rahu is posited and the Moon or Saturn is posited in the 5th house, the curse of the mother becomes the cause of the destruction of the children.
If Mars, Rahu, the Sun and Saturn are posited in the ascendant, the 5th, the 8th and the 12th houses and the lords of the 4th house and the Ascendant are situated in the Trik houses, the mother's curse brings about the loss of the children.
If Jupiter duly conjunct with Mars and Rahu is posited in the 8th house and the Moon and the Saturn are posited in the 5th house, the children are destroyed due to the curse of the mother.
The delineation of childlessness shall be indicated after carefully considering these Yogas by the scholars and for the protection of the children, beneficent propitiatory measures are accomplished. The native should take bath under the bridge, recite Gayatri Mantras for one lakh times. Aftertaking milk in Ropaya (रौप्य) in a particular measure, the things connected with the planet be given in charity, feed the Brahmins and go round (प्रदक्षिण) a pipal tree 1008 times with full devoutness.
O Mahadevi ! With the performance of these rites, one gets relieved from the curse and there will be gain of children and prolongation of the family.
Notes: Ropaya (रौप्य) is a fixed quantity of a liquid (द्रव). Incidentially, in Sanskrit Ropaya is also an appropriate word for silver.

51-61 : Now I will narrate the Yogas arising out of the curse of the brother and on knowing the same, the learned Astrologers should make efforts to protect the children from the curse.
If the lord of the 3rd house is posited in the 5th house duly conjunct with Mars and Rahu, the lords of the 5th house and the Ascendant are in the 8th house, there will be loss of children due to the curse of the brother.
If Mars and Saturn are respectively posited in the Ascen dant and the 5th house and the lord of the 3rd house is located in the 9th house and Karaka for the brother gets posited in the 8th house, it will cause destruction of the children attributed to the curse of the brother.
If Jupiter duly debilitated is posited in the 3rd house and Saturn goes to the 5th house and the Moon and Mars are posited in the 8th house, there will be loss of children ascribed to the curse of the brother.
When the lord of the Ascendant be in the 12th house and Mars gets into the 5th house and the lord of the 5th house duly conjunct with a malefic planet is posited in the 8th house, then children will be destroyed owing to the curse of the brother.
If the Ascendant and the 5th house are hemmed between: the malefic planets and the lords of the Ascendant and the 5th house are posited in the Trik houses (6th, 8th, 12th), the brother's curse will bring deprivation of children.
Should the lord of the 10th house, duly conjunct with the malefic planets, is posited in the 3rd house and auspicious planet conjoining with Mars is positioned in the 5th house, loss of children as a result of the curse of the brother be predicted.
If the 5th house having the sign of Mercury harbours both Saturn and Rahu and the 12th house contains Mercury and Mars, there will be deprevation of children following the curse of the brother.
If the lord of the Ascendant and the 3rd house are posited in the 3rd and the 5th houses respectively and malefic planets are posited in the ascendant, the 3rd house and the 5th house, it will indicate loss of children.
When the lord of the 3rd house is in the 8th house, Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu are posited or aspecting the 5th house, loss of children will take place.
If the lord of the 8th house duly conjunct with the lord of the 3rd house is posited in the 5th house and the 8th house harbours Mars and Saturn, the brother's curse will cause the deprevation of children.

Thereafter, sapling of Pipal tree be planted in front the Saligrama (शालिग्रम) on the bank of the Kaveri river (कावेरी) and 10 cows are worshipped. The one desirous of children (son) should donate land having fruit trees in charity through his wife. All these ceremonies be performed along with the wife with full devoutness. This will bestow children (son) and prolongation of the family will be assured.

Read Chapter 85 verses 1 to 6. How is the doctrine attributed?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Maitreya asks Parashara; Parashara says he will restate what Lord Shiva described when asked by Parvati; and the combinations are then given as Shiva's reply.
A nested attribution three levels deep — and worth noticing because BPHS does not do this often. Most of the book is Parashara speaking directly. Here he explicitly frames the material as something he is relaying from a higher authority, which marks it as doctrine of a particular weight rather than technique. Whatever you make of that, it is what the text does and it is worth reporting accurately.

Chapter 85 gives combinations and Chapter 86 gives remedies. Where else in BPHS have you met that structure?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Chapters 11 and 12 — Ariṣṭa and its antidotes — in Week 3. And in fact Chapter 85 contains both, since its combinations come with their own prescribed measures.
Verses 5 and 6 make it explicit: Parvati asks what sin destroys children, what planetary combinations depict these effects, and what are the preventive propitiatory measures. All three in one question. So the remedy is not an afterthought appended by Chapter 86 — it is part of the original framing. Reading a combination without its response is reading half of what Parashara wrote.

State the general remedial framework of Chapter 86.
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: An image of the afflicting planet is made in its own material — copper for the Sun, sphaṭika for the Moon, red sandalwood for Mars, gold for Mercury and Jupiter, silver for Venus, iron for Saturn, lead for Rahu, brass for Ketu — and propitiated with the offerings and observances appropriate to that planet.
Notice the structure rather than the list: the remedy is made of the planet's own substance and directed at the planet causing the affliction. That is the transferable framework, and it is what the twelve chapters that follow apply to specific birth circumstances. Once you have the framework, Chapters 87 to 98 become variations rather than twelve new things.

How should the curse material be taught and used — as a diagnosis, or as something else?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: As a system of meaning about inherited difficulty, not as a diagnosis to deliver to a person.
The distinction is sharp and it matters. Telling someone their chart shows a curse from a previous birth is a statement about their moral history that they cannot examine, cannot contest, and will carry. It is also, on the text's own terms, incomplete — because the combination comes with a prescribed response and the response is half the doctrine. What the material is good for is a frame: a way of understanding recurring difficulty as structural rather than personal failure, which for some people is genuinely useful. Whether to offer that frame at all is a judgment about the person in front of you.
Someone asks whether they should perform the remedies BPHS prescribes. What do you say?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: What the text prescribes and for what — without either promising an outcome or dismissing the practice.
Both failure modes are common. Promising results converts a religious observance into a transaction and makes you responsible for an outcome you cannot deliver. Dismissing it substitutes your view for the source's and for the person's. The accurate position is available and it is straightforward: this is what Parashara prescribes for this affliction; it belongs to a devotional framework; whether you undertake it is your decision.
Apply it to a chart
Chart A — Rama, the teaching chart — A strikingly clean chart from a classical source, followed from Week 1 to Week 13. · about 26 min
Not placed: Mercury, Rahu, Ketu — the source this chart comes from does not say where they go, and nothing has been supplied to fill the space.
| Graha | Sign | House | Degree | Nakshatra | Condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Aries | 10 | degree not recorded | — | exalted |

Chart A is used here deliberately. It is the chart with the least data, which makes it a good place to practise the discipline that matters most in this material: saying what you cannot conclude.
- Read Chapter 85's combinations and check Chart A against them. Note which combinations you can evaluate from the placements the source gives, and which you cannot.
- Write down explicitly what you cannot assess about this chart and why — three grahas unplaced, no degrees, no Navāṁśa.
- Now do the same on Chart B, which has full data. Which combinations, if any, does it satisfy? Apply the contradicting-evidence pass: what in the chart argues against each?
- For any combination that does appear, read Chapter 85's own prescribed response alongside it. The two belong together.
- The written exercise, and it is the assessment. Someone whose chart shows one of these combinations asks you what it means. Write your answer, under two hundred words, in plain language. Then apply the three tests: is everything in it true; does it stay within the evidence; does it leave the person better off.
Check your understanding
Answer from memory first. Looking back at the reading before you try turns a memory test into a copying exercise.
Where would you look for BPHS on inherited difficulty, and for its general remedial framework?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Chapter 85; Chapter 86.
And then Chapters 87 to 98 for remedies keyed to specific birth circumstances. Three levels: the karmic doctrine, the general framework, and the circumstance-specific applications.
Which material is prescribed for an image of Saturn, and which for the Moon?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Iron for Saturn; sphaṭika — a crystalline stone — for the Moon.
From verses 4 and 5. The pattern is that each planet's image is made of its own substance, which connects directly to Chapter 3's correspondence material from Week 1 — the metals assigned to each graha. Another case of early material being used late.

Why does the course teach this material rather than omitting it?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Because it is real BPHS doctrine, because the remedial framework it establishes governs the twelve chapters that follow, and because omitting it would misrepresent the book.
The same reasoning as Ariṣṭa, longevity and Chapter 82. And the same qualification: teaching the doctrine and training you to deliver it are different things. You will know what BPHS says. What you say is a separate decision and this unit is largely about making it well.
What are the three tests for what you write on this material?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Is everything in it true; does it stay within the evidence; does it leave the person better off than before they asked.
From Week 7, unchanged, and this is the material they were built for. The third is the one people fail: it is entirely possible to say something accurate and evidentially careful that a person will carry for years to no purpose. Week 13 assesses exactly this.
What you carry forward
Two things grow across the whole course. This unit adds to both.
To your chart-analysis process
- **Step 15 (foreshadowed) — answer in plain language.** On karmic material, what you say and whether to say it is part of the analysis. A combination and its prescribed response are one unit; never present the first without the second.
To your field manual
- Ch. 85's attribution is nested: Parashara relays what Shiva told Parvati. The text marks this material as doctrine of particular weight.
- Ch. 85 verses 5–6: the original question asks for the sin, the combinations, AND the propitiatory measures together. A combination without its response is half the doctrine.
- Ch. 86 framework (86.4–5): an image of the afflicting planet in its own material — copper Sun, sphaṭika Moon, red sandalwood Mars, gold Mercury and Jupiter, silver Venus, iron Saturn, lead Rahu, brass Ketu — propitiated with that planet's offerings.
- Ch. 87–98 apply that framework to specific birth circumstances. Learn the framework and the twelve become variations.
- Do not deliver a curse combination as a diagnosis. It is a statement about a person's moral history that they cannot examine or contest.
- On remedies: say what the text prescribes and for what. Do not promise outcomes; do not dismiss the practice.
By now you should be able to
- State what Chapter 85 claims and how the claim is attributed
- Read a curse combination with its prescribed remedy, as one unit
- State the general remedial framework of Chapter 86
- Write what you would actually say to someone about this material
