Week 12 · Unit 5 · Specialized Horoscopy, Remedies and Completion
Milestone 4 of 5: Difficult births, and Parashara's last word
Difficult Births, and Parashara's Last Word
Twelve short chapters as one topic with a lookup table, horary as a named neighbour, and the epilogue — where the book ends.
Assumes you have done: Unit 4 of this week — the remedial framework these twelve apply
Why this matters
Twelve chapters, three and a half thousand words between them, all answering one question: this person was born under a difficult circumstance, what does the text prescribe? Read as twelve separate lessons that is a dispiriting week. Read as one framework with a lookup table it is an hour, and you finish able to find any of them in seconds. Then horary — a different branch, named and not taught — and then Parashara's own closing statement, which is a genuine ethics of practice and the best possible place to end.
Learn
Twelve chapters, three and a half thousand words between them, and one question.
One framework, eleven circumstances
Chapter 87 opens by naming the whole class: births under Amāvāsyā, under Kṛṣṇa Chaturdaśī, and the rest — circumstances that indicate difficulty despite the ascendant and planets being otherwise well disposed.
Then eleven chapters apply the Chapter 86 framework to each:
| Circumstance | Chapter |
|---|---|
| Amāvāsyā — the new moon | 88 |
| Kṛṣṇa Chaturdaśī | 89 |
| Bhadrā and other yogas | 90 |
| A relative’s birth nakshatra | 91 |
| Saṅkrānti — a solar ingress | 92 |
| An eclipse | 93 |
| Gaṇḍānta | 94 |
| Abhukta Mūla | 95 |
| Jyeṣṭhā Gaṇḍānta | 96 |
| Tritara | 97 |
| Abnormal birth | 98 |
That table is the entire navigation problem for this block. With it, “a client was born during an eclipse — where do you look?” takes four seconds.
The common structure
Read Chapter 93 in full as the model. Verses 1 to 4 name the circumstance and state the difficulty it indicates. Verses 5 to 11 prescribe the propitiation: a place prepared and cleansed, images installed, offerings appropriate to the planet involved.
Every one of the twelve takes that shape, because every one of them is the Chapter 86 framework — an image in the planet’s own material, propitiated with that planet’s offerings — applied to a specific circumstance.
Read one properly and the other ten are variations.
And the discipline that has run through the whole course applies once more: never state the difficulty without the prescribed response. Naming an eclipse birth’s indicated risk and stopping there is the same error as quoting Chapter 11 without Chapter 12, and by Week 12 it should be unthinkable.
Horary, named and not taught
Chapter 99 gives the horary system — Praśna.
Verses 1 to 5 make the subject clear: state of mind, movements of travellers, marriage, the birth or loss of a child, the recovery or death of a patient — answered by casting a chart for the moment the question is asked, not for a birth.
That is a genuinely different practice with its own literature, and orientation is the honest treatment. You now know what it is, what question it answers, and where it lives.
The last word
Chapter 100 is Parashara’s epilogue, and it is a genuine ethics of practice rather than a formality. Read it slowly.
Three conditions on who may work with this material:
Restraint in transmission. This knowledge should never be given indiscriminately.
Technical competence. A person having the knowledge of time-reckoning and accurate positions of planets and nakshatras only can understand Hora Śāstra, and not others.
Character. A person knowing the subject matter of Hora Śāstra should be truthful and able to exercise control over his senses.
You have read the book
All hundred chapters. Every one of them, at the depth the course judged appropriate — Core, Working or Reference, decided by what the rest of the book depends on rather than by what was pleasant.
That is a real thing to have done, and very few people who own this book have done it.
What remains is the Navigation Clinic, which tests whether you can find your way around what you have read — and then Week 13, which assembles ten weeks of accumulated method into one process and runs it end to end.
Read BPHS
This is the source itself. The teaching above prepares you for it; it does not replace it.

1-4: Maharishi Parasara said - O Vipra! Now I will narrate the causes of the inauspicious births despite the fact when Ascendant (लग्न) and other planets being auspicious and well disposed. If a birth takes place ing the Amavasya (अमावास्या), or Chaturdasi of the darker half of the lunar month. (14th tithi of Krishna Paksha), in the prevalance of VishtiKarna (विष्टि करण), having the birth Nakshatra that of brother, in the birth Nakshatra of mother and father, during the solar ingress, during the Pata (क्रन्ति साम्य), at the time of Solar or Lunar eclipses, during in the prevalance of inauspicious Yogas like Vyatipata (व्यतिपात) etc. in all the three types of Gandants, during Yamaghant (यमघंट), Tithikshaya (तिथिक्षय), in the Yogas of Dagdha (दग्ध) etc., Tritara (त्रितर) birth (son's birth after the birth of three daughters and vice-versa), a freak birth (some degree of disability) are considered inauspicious births. Performing of propitiatory measures will be beneficial and therefore, I now explain these measures (rituals) in the succedingly narrations.

1-4: Maharishi Parasara said - O Vipra ! Whosoever is born during the solar or lunar eclipses runs the risk of sickness, suffer ings, poverty and death. Therefore, for the benefit of mankind, I wish to narrate the method of propitiation for the alleviation of such afflictions. An idol of the lord of Nakshatra in which eclipses of solar and lunar take place be got made in gold. In case of solar eclipse an idol of Surya Deva (सूर्य देव) be also got made in gold, of afforable size. For the lunar eclipse, silver idol of Chandra Deva (चन्द्रमा) should be got made and the learned should make the idol of Rahu in lead.

5-11 : A sacred and even place be cleansed by smearing cow dung paste and a neat and decent cloth is spread over it and then install all the above three idols. In the event of solar eclipse, make oblation's of things favoured by the Sun viz. red rice, red sandal, red rosary, red clothes etc. and in the case of lunar eclipse, the Moon's favourable things like while sandal, white flower, white rosary, white clothes etc. and for Rahu, black flower and black clothes etc. and for the lord the Nakshatra, offer white and fragrant things like flower etc.
The Sun be worshipped with Mantras "आकृष्णेन.........." and the Moon with "इमं देवा.......". The worship of Rahu be performed with Doorva (दूर्वा) and with Mantras "कयानश्चित्र..........". Then, for the Sun and the Moon, Havana (हवन) be performed with the wood pieces of Aak (आक) and Palasha (पलाश) respectively. And O Brahmin the great ! for the favour of Rahu, the Havana (हवन) be performed with Doorva (दूर्वा - a kind of grass).

1-3: Maharishi Parasara said - O Maitreya ! The birth of a child on Amavasya causes poverty for both the parents. The learned persons should undertake propitiatory measures for the alleviation of such affliction (दोष).
To begin with, install a Kalasha (कलश) - a metal pitcher and put Goolar (गूलर) a wild fig, leaves of Banyan (बढ़), Pipal (पीपल), mango and margo (नीम) trees and five gems (पर्चरत्न), and have its mouth covered with a cloth.

4-9: Worshipping amidst chanting of Mantras "सर्वे समुद्रा ........" and "अपोहिष्ठा....... ", the Kalasha (कलश) be established in the south west corner (अग्नि कोण). The idol of the deities of the Sun and the Moon being the lords of Amavasya be made out of gold or the idol of the Moon made of silver and that of the Sun in Copper. Both these idols be installed with the prescribed rituals by worshipping amidst recitation of Mantra "आप्यायस्व...." for the Sun and "सविता ....." for the Moon for 16 or 5 times and perform the Havana (हवन).
The learned Priests (पंडित) should perform Havana (हवना) giving oblations of wood pieces (समिधा) and cooked charu (चरु) while reciting Mantras with devoutness "सवितृ...." and "सोमो धेनुष्य ......." respectively for 108 or 28 times. Thereafter, water be sprinkled (semblance of a water bath-Abhisheka - अभिषेक) on the parents and the son (born on Amavasya). This be followed by offering of gold, silver and black cow as charity (दक्षिण) and the Brahmins be fed (as many one can afford). These propitiatiary ceremonies will extirpate the affliction and bring happiness and wellfare to the child.

1-3 : Maharishi Parasara said - O Vipra ! The result of this affliction will be in accordance to the birth taking place in six different parts of Krishna Chataurdashi. If birth is in the first part, it be considered auspicious. The birth in the second and the third parts, will cause death to father and mother respectively. The birth in the fourth part, will attribute ruination of the maternal uncle and in the fifth part, will cause destruction of the family. There will be down fall of self and loss of wealth, should the birth be in the sixth part. For getting released from this affliction, propitiatory measures be taken in line the with the prescribed rituals.

6-13: The Brahmins knowing the ccorrect substance of the Mantras, should make the beginning with Varuna (वरुण) Mantra after fully invoking themselves and then commence the worship with the Kalasha (कलश) duly installed in the south-west corner while chanting Mantras viz; "त्रयम्बक .....", "इमं मे वरुण....", "तत्म यामि.....", "त्वन्नो अग्ने ....." and "तथा स तवं नों...". Thereafter Japa (जप) of Sukta (सूक्त) "आ नो भद्रे ...." etc., and "भद्रा अग्नेश्य......" be performed followed by the recitation of "कुद्रुदे...." etc., Mantras. Subsequently, the idol of Lord Shiva be given water bath (अभिषेक) and worship of Nine-Planets (नव ग्रह) be carried out. This be succeeded with Havana (हवन) in a prescribed manner giving oblation of, Ghee (घी), Charu (चरु), sesamums seeds (तिल), Urda (pulse - माष), mustered oil, wood pieces (समिधा) of Pipal (पीपल) Pakar (पाकर), Palas (पलास), Khaira (खैर), amidst chanting Mantras for 108 or 28 times severally for each Planet. Next, as per the precept, while chanting the Mantras of "यम्बक ...." Havana (हवन) with the oblations of Sesamums seeds be performed for the nine planets with full rituals. Finally, the water of the Kalasha be sprinkled (अभिषेक) over the child and the father and then Brahmins, as many one can afford, be fed. This will bring wellfare(कल्याण) to the child.

1-7: Maharishi Parasara said- O Vipra! If the birth Nakshatra of the native and that of his brother or mother-father are the same, he (the native) will certainly die. Therefore, I relate the measures of pacification as propounded by the great sages like Garga etc. The measures shall be organised on an auspicious Vara (day), during the course of auspicious Nakshatra, having good Moon, Tara Bala and in the absence of Rikta (रिक्ता) Tithi and Vishti (विष्टि) Karana.
An elegant idol having appearance of the birth Nakshatra and Kalasha (कलश) be installed in between north-east corner and the corner of the fire place and have it covered with a red cloth and then wrap two pieces of cloth over it. The idol then be worshipped amidst chanting of Mantras concerning the birth Nakshatra. In order to alleviate inauspiciousness, Havana (हवन) be performed in accordance to one's own Gotra (गोत्र) by reciting the same Mantra for 108 times and offering oblations of wood pieces (समिधा), food grain, Ghee while facing the fire. Thereafter, the learned priest (Acharya - पण्डित) should do Abhisheka (अभिषेक - sprinkling of water or bath) of both the native and the person (relative) who have the common birth Nakshatra. Gifts (दक्षिण) be presented to the helpers of the Acharya (पण्डित) and the Acharya be offered special gifts. Lastly, the Brahmins are fed generously and with complete devoutness.

Then put a vessel duly covered with a thin cloth for the purpose of a seat (आसन) on each pot and install idol of deity of Adhideva (अधिदेव) and Pratyadhideva (प्रत्यधिदेव) which symbolises the Sun and Moon respectively. Thereafter, worship both the idols placing aside prime idols (प्रधान) of Sakranti (संक्रान्ति). Before commencing worship, two clothes be offered as oblations to each of the idols and then perform worship as per the method prescribed for this ritual. The prime idol i.e. of Sakranti be worshipped amidst Chanting of Mantras of "त्र्यम्बकं .......", Mantra "उत्सूर्य ....." for the Sun and Mantra "आप्यायश्व..." for the Moon. The worship should be done with Shodshopchara (शोडषोपचार) or Panchopchara (पंचोपचार). Mrityunjaya Japa be recited for 1008, 108 or 28 times as per ones capacity after touching the prime idol. Then Havana (हवन) with the oblation of sesamum seeds amidst chanting of Mrityunjaya Mantra and of the devoted deity be performed and thereafter Brahmins be fed. It is after these rituals, the pacification of Deva (देव) is complete.

6-8 : Now I will narrate the method of propitiation for the alleviation of the affliction to the birth of the Gandanta Nakshatra. The father of the child should see the child only after the end of Janma Shouchaka (जन्मशौच - the period of ten days after the birth) or any auspicious day after performing rituals of propitiation.
By giving charity of a bullock for the birth in Tithi Gandanta; a cow with calf in Nakshatra Gandanta and gold in Lagna Gandanta, will mitigate the evil effects. If birth took place in the first half part of the Gandanta, the Abhisheka (अभिषेक - bath) of the child be performed alongwith father and in case of birth being in the second half part of the Gandanta, it should be alongwith mother.

1-2½ : Maharishi Parasara Said The lords of Nakshatras Jyeshta and Moola are Indra Deva (इन्द्रदेव) and Rakshasa (राक्षस) and both being highly inimical to each other, the birth taking place in their Gandanta (Junction) will suffer from severe affliction (दोष). A son or a daughter born during Abhukta Moola should be deserted or else, the father should not see the child upto eight years from the birth. For the purpose of getting relieved from this evil effect, I now narrate the method of propitiation.

5-8 : Make a sacred place which is neat and even and have it purified with the paste of cow dung under a Mandapa (मण्डप - an open place covered with temprorary covers etc.) having four gates duly decorated with arches in the east or north side of the house. Prepare a pit (कुण्ड) for performing Havana (हवन) for the planets etc. Then get made an idol of Rakshasa (राक्षस) being deity (lord) of the Nakshatra of 16, 8 or 4 of Mashas of gold as per the economic position of an individual. The idol should have two heads of blackish colour with sword and shield and mounted on a dead body and showing horrifying face alike goat.

10-15 : Select a learned and intelligent Acharya (priest) and establish Kalasha (कलश) as per the prevalent religious traditions of the family and put Shataushadhi (शतौषधि), water of holy river and Panchagavya (पञ्चगव्य). Then put the leaves of Bamboo over the Kalasha of 100 small holes and while facing towards west, place the idol over it and perform the worship by giving oblation of white clothes, rice etc. After drawing figures of Adhideva India and Pratyadhideva Jala (जल) in their respective Shakha (शाखा), perform worship of the prime (प्रधान) deities (देवताओं) with Mantras. Thereafter as per the laid down procedure, perform the Havana (हवन) for the happiness of the Deva and Adhideva. For the pacification of death affliction, after calming down the senses (इन्द्रियाँ), the Japa (जप) of Mantra " त्र्यम्बकं................. " be recited 1008 or 108 times and then the priest be honoured with the gifts with all humbleness.

16-18 : The priest well conversed with the Mantras be made seated at a sacred place, and the father (यजमान), the wife and the child should take bath from the water of the two Kalashas wrapped with cloth. Thereafter, they should get dressed with white clothes and put fragrant paste of sandal and the father should offer milk bearing cow to the priest as well as gifts, as he could afford, and feast the Brahmins.

19-20: Recite the Mantra embodid in Shloka 19 i.e., "यत् पापं भक्षयाज्य....." meaning "Destroy what ever sin and short comings contained in my limbs and accept oblation of Ghee (घृत) and grow my wealth (लक्ष्मी) and invigoration"
While chanting the above Mantra, they (father, mother and son) should clearly see the reflections of their faces in the Ghee (in melted form). With these alleviatory measures, all the afflictions (evil effects) arising out of the birth of the native (son) in the Moola gandanta (अभुक्त मूल) will get destroyed.

1-2½ : Sage Parasara said O Vipra! The birth in Jyeshta Gandanta proves disastrous for both native (son) and his father. Now I narrate the methodology for the purpose of alleviation of all the afflictions (obstructions - विघ्न). Like in the case of Moola Gandanta, erect Mandapa (मंडप) for the pacification of Jyeshta Gananda as well. Here Indra Devta be the prime Devta (प्रधान), Agni Devta (अग्नि) as Adhideva and consider Rakshasa (राक्षस) as Pratyadhideva.

3-6: Have the Idol of Indra Devta made of gold as one can afford holding Ankusha (अकुंश) and seated over Airavata (ऐरावत) and put it on Kalasha (कलश) filled duly with paddy and rice. Worship be performed amidst chanting of Mantras as prevalent in the family and with fragrance, flowers, rice and take Abhisheka (sprinkling of holy water) and do Havana (हवन) and arrange food for the Brahmins. Recite Indra Sukata (ईन्द्र सूक्त) and Mrityunjaya Mantras with complete devoutness. Lastly, do the prayer of Indra Devata. These rituals will bestow peace.
अथ वा शक्त्यभावे तु कुर्याद् गोदानमेव हि ।

7 : Should performance of these rituals of pacification are unaffordable, merely giving cow in charity will bring the same result because charity of a cow is greater than donating the entire land.

8-9: For the Gandantas of Moola-Jyeshta and Aslesha - Magha Nakshatras three cows, in Revati and Aswini Gantantas - two cows and in other Yogas of Gandantas and other malefic Yogas - one cow be given in charity. In the event of non availability of cows, the cash amount equivalent to the cow(s) be given to the Brahmins.

Verse 1010 : A girl taking birth in Jyestha Nakshatra, destroys the elder brother of her husband and if the birth being in the end of Vishakha Nakshatra, she destroys the younger brother of her husband. A cow must be given in charity during the marriage of that girl.

11-13 : The birth of a girl or a boy in the last three quarters of Aslesha Nakshatra and their birth being in the first three quarters of Moola Nakshatra will become the cause of death of mother-in-law and father-in-law respectively. Therefore, the learned priest (पण्डित) should take propitiatory measures at the time of their marriages. If there is no elder brother of the husband, this evil effect will not occur.

1-2: Maharishi Parasara said - O Vipra ! After this, I will now state the other kinds of afflictions caused to the Tritara (त्रितर) births. A birth of a daughter after three sons or a birth of a son after three daughters brings misfortune to his both paternal and material famlies. In that case the rituals of propitiation be undertaken bountifully.

3-4 : After the completion of the period of Sutaka (सूतक - 10 days after the birth) select an Acharya (आचार्य - Priest) and Brahmin. Place the Kalashas over the heaps of paddy and install elegant idols of Bramha, Vishnu, Mehesha and Indra on it and perform worship with complete devoutness.

5-9 At the time of Havana (हवन), one Brahmin after purifying himself should undertake Japa (जप) for Rudra Suktas (रुद्र सूक्त) and the entire Shanti Sukta (शान्ति सूक्त). Acharya, thereafter should perform the Havana with wood pieces (समिधा), Ghee (घी), Sesamum seeds (तिल), Charu (चर) for 1008, 108 or 28 times amidst the recitation of Mantras relating to Bramha, Vishu, Mehesha and Indra and the final oblation (पूर्णाहुति) be given in favour of devoted deity (इष्ट देवता).
Thereafter, the child be given Abhisheka alongwith his entire family followed by presenting of gifts to the priest and Brahmins be fed. After this, they should see there reflections in the Ghee kept in a copper vessel and gifts be distributed amongst the poors. With these propitiatory measures, all kinds of afflictions will get alleviated.

1-3 : Maharishi Parasara said - O Vipra! Now I narrate the abnormal birth (delivery) on account of which the entire village and family get afflicted. If there is an early or delayed birth or the child is born with less or more times or without the head or with two heads or female showing appearance of an animal or male of animal, these kinds of abnormal births signify destruction.

4-5 : These kind of birth (delivery) to a woman or animal in a house bring about affliction to the entire members of the family of the person concerned. In order to get relieved from such affliction, a proper procedure of propitiation should be carried out vigoursly or the concerned woman or animal viz., horse, cow etc. should be given up.

6-9 : If a woman get pregnant or give birth to a child in the 15th or 16th years from her birth, it will be inauspicious. If cow gives birth when the Sun is posited in Leo sign, or a buffalo (female) gives birth when the Sun is in Capricorn, it will cause destruction to their keeper and also to their possessor (owner) and as such they should be donated in charity to a Brahmin or else, propitiatory measures be taken as per the prescribed procedure. All the rituals like Havan (हवन) etc. be carried out as per the sequence as described earlier in a peaceful manner and with which the entire family will be get released from the affliction and bestowed happiness.
एवं त्वरिष्टे सम्प्राप्ते नरः शान्तिं करोति यः ।

10 : Likewise, in a situation of any kind of affliction, if a person takes propitiatory measures, he after accomplishing all his desires, gets bestowed with prosperity happiness and long life.

If the planet be in another's Navamsa and also aspects another's Navamsa in the Ascendant or in the trnal houses, the query will refer to Moola (some roots or vegetables kind).
In the case of even signs, if the Ascendant is located in the 1st Navamsa, the query will relate to Jeeva; in the 2nd Navamsa, Moola; in the 3rd Navamsa, it will concern Dhatu. Again, the 4th, the 5th, the 6th Navamsas will relate to Jeeva, Moola and Dhatu respectively. (Further, the 7th, the 8th and the 9th Navamsas will repeat the order). Practice
Build the lookup. Which chapter covers each circumstance — Amāvāsyā, Kṛṣṇa Chaturdaśī, Bhadrā, a relative's nakshatra, Saṅkrānti, an eclipse, Gaṇḍānta, Abhukta Mūla, Jyeṣṭhā Gaṇḍānta, Tritara, and abnormal birth?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: 88 Amāvāsyā, 89 Kṛṣṇa Chaturdaśī, 90 Bhadrā and other yogas, 91 relatives' nakshatras, 92 Saṅkrānti, 93 eclipses, 94 Gaṇḍānta, 95 Abhukta Mūla, 96 Jyeṣṭhā Gaṇḍānta, 97 Tritara, 98 abnormal births. Chapter 87 introduces the whole class.
Eleven circumstances in eleven chapters, in the order Chapter 87 names them. That is the entire navigation problem for this block, and having the table means you can answer "a client was born during an eclipse, where do you look" instantly. Which is precisely the outcome Reference treatment is supposed to produce.

Read Chapter 93 as a model. What structure do all twelve share?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: The circumstance is named, the difficulty it indicates is stated, and then a propitiation is prescribed in detail — place prepared, images installed, offerings appropriate to the planet involved.
Chapter 93 verses 1–4 name the circumstance and the risk; verses 5–11 give the observance. Every one of the twelve takes that shape. Read one properly and the other eleven are variations — which is exactly what the Chapter 86 framework predicted, since all of them are that framework applied to a specific circumstance.

Why does this course present twelve chapters as one topic rather than as twelve readings?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Because they answer one question with one framework, and presenting them as twelve would make a coherent hour into a dispiriting week.
Three and a half thousand words across twelve chapters — less than a fifth of Chapter 26 alone. The presentational decision is doing real work here: a student who sees "read Chapters 87 to 98" reasonably concludes the week is enormous, and abandons it. A student who sees one framework and a lookup table reads all of it in a sitting. The material is identical; the framing determines whether it gets read.
What is horary, and why does this course not teach it?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: A different branch — Praśna — which answers a question from the moment it is asked rather than from a birth chart. It is not taught because it is a separate discipline and because Chapter 99's provenance is explicitly stated as added material.
Chapter 99 verses 1–5 make the subject clear: state of mind, movements of travellers, marriage, birth, recovery of a patient — answered by casting a chart for the query. That is a genuinely different practice, with its own literature, and an orientation reading is the honest treatment. Note also the provenance: the translator identifies this chapter as material picked up from other expositions of Parashara and added to complete the works.

What conditions does Chapter 100 place on who may practise?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: That the knowledge should not be given indiscriminately; that a person must know time-reckoning and accurate planetary positions to understand Hora Śāstra at all; and that they should be truthful and able to exercise control over themselves.
Three conditions: restraint in transmission, technical competence, and personal character. Note that the second is a genuine gatekeeping requirement rather than a pious wish — you cannot practise this without being able to compute or obtain accurate positions, which was a substantial barrier in Parashara's time and is a substantial responsibility now that software has removed it.

Check your understanding
Answer from memory first. Looking back at the reading before you try turns a memory test into a copying exercise.
A client was born during a solar eclipse and asks what the tradition says. Where do you look, and what do you find?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Chapter 93. It states the difficulty indicated — sickness, suffering, poverty, danger — and then prescribes a detailed propitiation.
And you give both halves. Naming the difficulty without the prescribed response is the same error as quoting Chapter 11 without Chapter 12, and by Week 12 it should be unthinkable.
Source: BPHS 93.1–11
Chapter 99's provenance is explicitly stated. What is it and why does that matter?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: The translator identifies it as material picked up from other expositions on the subject by Parashara and added to complete the works. It matters because it is stated provenance rather than inferred, and should be taught as such.
This is the one chapter in the book whose addition is openly declared, and the course treats it accordingly. Compare with the two unnamed added chapters in Volume 1, which the preface mentions without identifying — there the course is silent, because identifying them would be a guess. Stated provenance is taught; inferred provenance is not.
Chapter 100 verse 5 says only a person who knows time-reckoning and accurate planetary positions can understand Hora Śāstra. Software now supplies both instantly. What follows?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: That a barrier which once selected for serious students has been removed, and the responsibility it enforced now has to be taken up deliberately.
For most of this tradition's history, anyone practising it had first spent years learning to compute. That was a filter. It is gone, entirely, and what remains of Parashara's condition is the part he listed alongside it — truthfulness and self-control. Those were never enforced by the arithmetic and now nothing enforces them. Reading verse 5 at the end of a course that has told you repeatedly to let software compute is a useful moment.
How many of BPHS's hundred chapters have you now read?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: All of them.
Every chapter, at the depth the course judged appropriate to it — Core, Working or Reference, decided by what the rest of the book depends on rather than by preference. That is a real thing to have done and very few people who own this book have done it.
What you carry forward
Two things grow across the whole course. This unit adds to both.
To your chart-analysis process
- **Step 4 (extended) — identify the relevant Bhāvas.** Where a birth circumstance is unusual, check Ch. 87's index and the corresponding chapter for what the text prescribes.
To your field manual
- Difficult-birth lookup: 88 Amāvāsyā · 89 Kṛṣṇa Chaturdaśī · 90 Bhadrā and other yogas · 91 relatives' nakshatras · 92 Saṅkrānti · 93 eclipses · 94 Gaṇḍānta · 95 Abhukta Mūla · 96 Jyeṣṭhā Gaṇḍānta · 97 Tritara · 98 abnormal births. Ch. 87 introduces the class.
- All twelve share one structure: circumstance named, difficulty stated, propitiation prescribed. They are Ch. 86's framework applied to specific cases.
- Never state the difficulty without the prescribed response.
- Ch. 99 (horary / Praśna) answers a question from the moment it is asked, not from a birth chart. Stated provenance: added by the translator from other expositions. This course does not teach it.
- Ch. 100's conditions on practice: restraint in transmission; knowledge of time-reckoning and accurate planetary positions; truthfulness and self-control.
By now you should be able to
- Locate any of the twelve propitiation chapters by circumstance in seconds
- State the common structure of a propitiation chapter
- Say what horary is, what question it answers, and why this course does not teach it
- State Parashara's own conditions on practice from Chapter 100
