Week 3 · Unit 3 · Reading the Bhavas
Milestone 3 of 3: The first five houses, taught from their principles
Body, Wealth, Courage
Bhāvas 1, 2 and 3 — and the method of finding the single idea underneath a house's list.
Assumes you have done: Unit 2 — Chapter 13's significations and the prosperity rule
Why this matters
This unit teaches a method more than it teaches three houses. Every house in BPHS has one organising idea and a list of consequences of that idea, and the lists are what people memorise and the ideas are what actually let you answer a question nobody has asked before. Get the method here on three houses, and you can apply it unaided to the other nine — which is exactly what Week 4 will ask you to do.
Learn
You now have twelve lists. This unit is about not needing them.
Why the lists are the wrong thing to learn
Chapter 13 gives the 4th house as conveyance, relatives, mother, happiness, treasure, lands and houses. A student memorises that, and then a client asks about a decision to move their elderly parent into their home.
Which item on the list is that? Mother, or houses, or happiness? All three? And what would you do with the answer?
The list cannot handle it, because a list of instances can only ever match instances it already contains. What handles it is knowing what the 4th house is: the domain of what holds and shelters a life — the ground beneath you. Mother, dwelling, land, vehicle and inner contentment are all instances of that, which is why they are in the same verse. And so is the question about the parent, immediately and obviously, without any stretching.
That is the method. One idea per house; the list as its consequences.
Three houses, three ideas
The 1st — the embodied self.
Physique, appearance, intellect, complexion, vigour, weakness, joy and sorrow, innate nature.
Notice both what is in that list and what is missing. Body and mind are both there; so are capacity and incapacity; so are the settled dispositions of joy and sorrow. What is entirely absent is anything the person has or does — no money, no work, no relationships, no children.
The 1st house is the person, before the world happens to them. That is why it is the only house that is both a Kendra and a Trikoṇa, and it is why its lord carries more weight in a chart than any other single planet.
The 2nd — accumulation and holding.
Wealth, food, family, metals, precious stones. And in Chapter 15, a great deal about speech.
Money and speech in one house looks like a category error until you find the idea, which is what you have gathered and can draw on. Resources are gathered. Food is gathered. The family are the people who are yours. And words are what you have at your disposal to spend.
There is a second route to the same place, and it is worth having both. The 2nd house corresponds to the face and mouth in the Kālapuruṣa mapping from Week 2 — Taurus, the second sign, the face. Food and speech both pass through the mouth. That is not metaphor; it is the structural correspondence doing exactly what it was set up to do.
The 3rd — self-generated effort and reach.
Valour, servants, brothers and sisters, initiatory instruction, short journeys.
Courage is willingness to extend yourself. A short journey is a small extension of reach that returns you to where you started. Siblings are the people beside you rather than above you. Instruction and servants are both your capacity extended through others.
Test the principle on something the verse does not mention. Someone asks whether to take on an additional responsibility at work. The 3rd handles it immediately: this is a question about self-generated effort and whether the person’s reach extends that far. No keyword required.
Where the method stops
An honest limit. BPHS is a long text assembled over a long period, and not every signification in it reduces cleanly to a single organising idea.
Chapter 13 puts enemies in the 2nd house, alongside wealth and family. There are readings available — what threatens what you have gathered — and they feel like work in a way the others do not. The 3rd carrying the death of parents is another; the usual derivation runs through the 3rd being the 8th from the 8th, which is a real technique and a very different kind of reasoning from “what is the idea here”.
Use the principle as a tool for reasoning and remembering. Do not use it as a claim that every verse is systematic. When something does not reduce, note that it does not, and carry the item as an item.
The shape of a house-effect chapter
One practical thing before you go on, because it changes how you read the next twelve chapters.
Chapters 14 to 25 all have the same architecture. First, the effects of each planet placed in that house. Then the effects of that house’s lord placed in each of the twelve houses. Then particular combinations and special cases.
You will almost never read one of these chapters end to end after this week. You will go to the part you need — what does Chapter 20 say about the 7th lord in the 12th — and knowing the structure makes that a five-second operation rather than a hunt through six pages.
Two houses left in Week 3, and they are two of the most misunderstood in the book.

1-2. If the Ascendant Lord is together with a malefic or is situated in the 6th or 8th or 12th house he deprives the native of physical well-being and comforts; but if he is placed in a Kendra or a trikona (angle or trine) he indicates that the native will always enjoy bodily comforts. If the Ascendant lord be in combustion, In enemy's sign or in his sign of debilitation he causes diseases; benefics being placed in a kendra or trikona (angle or trine) from the Ascendant have been known to be destroyer of all diseases.

- If benefics are placed in the Ascendant the native will be handsome, if malefics are placed there he will be bereft of good appearance. The situation of benefics in the Ascendant or their aspect on it gives the native physical comforts.

5-7. When the Ascendant lord, Mercury, Jupiter or Venus are in a Kendra or a Trikona (angle or trine) the native will be longlived, wealthy, intelligent and favourite of the king. The Ascendant lord being placed in a movable sign and having the aspect of a benefic planet confers on the native fame, wealth, abundant pleasures and comforts of the body. If Mercury, Jupiter or Venus are situated in the Ascendant together with the Moon or if they are in a Kendra from the Ascendant the native is endowed with royal marks.

12-14. Head, eyes, ears, nose, temple, chin and face - these are the limbs indicated by the houses 1, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7 respectively when there is the rise of the First Decanate of the Ascendant; neck, shoulder, arm, side, heart, stomach and navel when that of the 'second' one and Pelvis, anus and penis, testicles, thigh, Knee, calf and foot when that of the third one. The portion already risen (the six houses behind the Lagna i.e. 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7 or the Uttarardha of the Lagna) indicates the left side of the body and, the one yet to rise (the six houses ahead of the Lagna i.e. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 or the Poorvardha of the Lagna) indicates the right side of the body.

- If the bhava of limb is occupied by a malefic planet, the learned astrologer should tell that it will have ulcer and if it is occupied by Mercury and all the malefic planets it will certainly have ulcer and if it is aspected by benefics the limb will have only scars.

1-2 O excellent of the Brahmins, now I explain to you the effects of the house of wealth, (the Second House). When the lord of the House of Wealth is placed in the 2nd House or in a Kendra or Trikona house (angle or trine) he should be known as promoter of wealth while his occupation of the Trik Houses (6\8\12) will cause loss of wealth. A benefic in the 2nd House is the giver of wealth while a malefic in it is the destroyer of wealth.
It has been pointed out in the 2nd sloka (verse) that the benefics placed in the 2nd House are wealth-givers. But in "**Chamatkar Chintamani**" a sloka or verse says about a planet of the first rank, Jupiter: कष्टतो द्रव्य लब्धि: सदा नो धनं विश्रमेद् यत्नतोऽपि" that is, if Jupiter is placed in the 2nd House, the native has to take great trouble and make great efforts to earn wealth. Even the wealth which has been earned with great difficulty does not remain permanent i.e. financial difficulty always pessists '**Bhava Kutuhala**' also refers to this fact and says that such a native earns wealth with great effort and difficulty although people think him to be wealthy. There are also some writers on astrology who think Jupiter's occupation of the second House as wealth giving. Jupiter has been spoken of as 'स्वस्थानहन्ता' (destroyer of one's own House). "स्थान हानि करोजीव:"is also well known which means that Jupiter is destroyer of his own house, if he is placed in his own house. This situation is possible only when that Lagna or Ascendant is Scorpio or Aquarius. Therefore, for other Lagnas or Ascendants the statement given in '**Chamatakar Chintamani**' and '**Bhava Kutuhala**' should not be taken as true; though Sage Parasara doesnot have this concept about Jupiter placed in the House of Wealth, he thinks that this situation is wealth giving and he has made it clear in the sloka (verse) that follows:
धनाधिपो गुरुर्यस्य धनभावगतो भवेत् ।
भौमेन सहितो वाऽपि धनवान् स नरो भवेत् ॥ ३ ॥
- The native in whose birth chart Jupiter the significator of wealth is situated in the House of Wealth (the 2nd House) or he is together with Mars will be wealthy.
- The Lord of the House of Wealth being placed in the House of profit (the 11th House) and the Lord of the House of Profit occupying the House of Wealth or these two being placed together in a kendra or a trikona (angle or trine) the native will possess wealth.
- When the lord of the House of wealth is placed in a kendra (angle) and from him the Lord of the Houses of profit (the 11th House) is placed in a trikona (trine) or Jupiter is together with Venus or is aspected by Venus, gain of wealth in full measure is to be understood.
(iii) In the **Vedic Predictive Astrology** Jupiter and Venus have been unquestionably regarded, as benefic planets. They give much help to that planet with whom they are situated or whom they aspect; they get the native obtain material objects through righteous means, that is the purity of means is an important contribution of these planets. But the condition is that none of these two planets should be placed in his/her sign of debilitation. If they are placed in their sign of debilitation then the situation will be like that of 'बगुलाभगत' or a 'sanctimonious crane' for whom the sanctity or purity of means will no longer be important.
These rules have been fully indicated in this sloka or verse. The Lord of the House of Wealth (the 2nd House) has been said to be placed in a kendra or angle, so the lord the House of profit (the 11th house) should be placed in a trikona or trine. Here the Lord of the House of wealth and that of the House of Profit have common characteristics and funcitons as has been cleared in the above sloka or verse. Therefore the Lord of the House of Wealth. who is placed in a kendra or angle will have manifold benefit from the Lord of the House of profit situated in trikona or trine. The more the equality between these Lords of the two houses relating to wealth the better situation or combination it will be for wealth. Jupiter together with Venus or aspected by Venus in the House of Wealth implies the 3rd rule.
6-7 When the Lord of the House of wealth is placed in the sixth House and the Lord of the House of profit is also placed there and the Houses of wealth and profit are also occupied by malefics or are aspected by malefics, the native will be poor. The Lord of the Houses of wealth and profit are combust, are together with malefic planets, the native will be penurious right from his birth and will have to beg even for his food.
- If the Lords of the Houses of Wealth and Profit (the 2nd and 11th Houses) are placed in the 6th or 8th or 12th Houses and Mars is placed in the House of Profit (the 11th House) and Rahu in the House of Wealth (the 2nd House) there will be loss of wealth due to royal (or governmental) punishment.
"शौर्य भर्बलशस्त्रधारणजनाधीशत्ववीर्यक्षयश्चोरो युद्धविरोधशत्रव उदारारक्तवस्तुप्रियः" |
One of the objects of which Mars is the significator is the thief also. Therefore, when situated in the House of Profit Mars will make the native often a dishonest stealer of income tax. Such native does not honestly pay income tax to the government and is guilty of stealing it. In other ways also Mars is a malefic planet and does not have consideration of fair or foul means. In such condition, the native is bound to be guilty and liable to royal or governmental punishment.
Like the Lord of the Sixth House Rahu is also a planet of Scarcity, poverty. It has been said of Rahu- "शनिवत राहु:" that is Rahu is like Saturn. Saturn is also the planet of scarcity or penury. According to '**Uttara Kalamrita**' Rahu is the significator of heretics, gambling, lies and resort of the low born. It can be understood how the significator of these things will behave with regard to wealth when he is placed in the House of Wealth or the 2nd House. It is clear that the native's wealth will have relation with such wicked and criminal actions as gambling etc. and with anti social activities which will be responsible to bring royal or governmental punishment on him.
- When Jupiter is placed in the House of Profit (the 11th House), Venus in that of Wealth (the 2nd. House) and the Lord of the House of Wealth is together with benefic planet, and the House of Expenses (the 12th House) is occupied by a benefic planet, there will be expenses on religious grounds.
- The native in whose birth chart the Lord of the House of wealth (the 2nd House) is either in his own or in his exaltation sign will look after the people. O excellent of the Brahmins! he should be known as famous and one who is benevolent and well wisher of others.
- If the Lord of the second House together with a benefic planet is placed in a good division like Paravatamsha etc, the native will get all kinds of wealth in his house effortlessly.
- In case of Netresha (the Lord of the Second House) being strong the native will have beautiful eyes, but if he is placed in the 6th or 8th or 12th house the native will have defective eyes.
- If the Lord of the Second House is together with a malefic planet and the House of Wealth (the Second House) is also occupied by a malefic planet, it will make the native a tell tale or tale bearer, liar and afflicted with windy diseases.
that is, if Saturn is placed in the House of Wealth or the 2nd House the native will be subjected to poverty and afflicted by windy bilious and phlegmatic diseases and diseases of bones and is also bereft of good qualities. If there are placed in the Second House planets having windy disposition, these are in their sign of debilitation and the Lord of the 2nd House also has on him malefic. influence, the native will certainly be afflicted with windy diseases.
- If the Lord of the House of Wealth (the 2nd House) in his sign of highest exaltation or is situated in his own house and is aspected by Jupiter, the native will be popular and famous.
- If the Lord of the Second House is together with Venus and is in the exalted Navamamsha, or is placed in the House of Venus and has relation with the Lord of the Ascendant, the native will have squint in his eye.
- When the Sun and the Moon are placed there (in the House of Wealth or the 2nd House) the native gets night blindness. The Lord of the Second House and of the Ascendant the Sun occupying the 2nd House, the native will be born-blind (blind from birth). If the Lord of the 10th or the 4th House also join in this combination then it causes the blindness of the father and the mother respectively.
- If the planet causing evil combination is situated in his sign of exaltation he doesnot cause evil, if he is placed in a trik house he causes evil.
- If Jupiter and the Lord of the 2nd House occupy the 6th or 8th or 12th house the native is born as bereft of speech. In the same way the parents (father and mother) should also be understood as bereft of speech if the lords of the Houses of talher and mother are placed in these houses.

- O Brahmin, now I explain to you the effects of the Vikrama Bhava (the third House). When the third House has the conjunction or aspect of benefic planets, the native will be brave and courageous and will be endowed with younger brother.
- If the Lord of the 'Bhratra Bhava' or the third house together with Mars, aspects the third house, or is situated in the third House, it should be pointed out that the native will be blessed with a younger brother.
- If these two (Mars and the Lord of the Third House) are in conjunction with malefic planets or are placed in an evil sign, the destruction of brothers will soon occur, there is no doubt about it.

Verse 4½4-4½ When the lord of the third house is a female planet (the Moon, Venus) and female planets are placed in this house, the native will have sister (younger) and similarly if the Lord of this house is a male planet and male planets are situated in it, he will be blessed with brother (younger) and, if the house is occupied by both male and female planets, then he will have the blessing of both brother and sister. But their effect should be predicted on the basis of their strengths and weaknesses.

5-6 When Mars and the Lord of the Third House occupy the 8th house, they are destroyer of the younger brother of the native, and Mars, the significator and the Lord of the Third House being in a Kendra (or angle) or Trikona (or trine) or in their sign of exaltation or in their own or friendly division, the happiness of younger brother is to be predicted.

7-11. If the third house is occupied by Mercury and the Lord of the third house is together with the Moon, the significator of this House, Mars with Saturn, then the native will first have a sister before him and after him a brother and the third will be a brother who will die. If the significator Mars is in conjunction with Rahu, and the Lord of the third house is in his sign of debilitation, there will be loss of younger brother but there will be 3 brothers before the native. If the Lord of the House of brothers (the 3rd House) is in a Kendra (angle) and the Significator Mars is placed in trikona (trine) from him in his exaltation together with Jupiter, 12 brothers of the native should be known; of these, the two elder brothers of the native and third, seventh, ninth and twelfth from him will die, the remaining six brothers will have long life.

12-13 If the Lord of the 12th House is in conjunction with Mars and Jupiter and the Moon is situated in the Third House, then the number of the native's brothers and sisters will be seven. Should there be the Moon in the Third House, and she be aspected by only male planets, the native will have brother and should she be together with Venus or be aspected by her he will have only sister.

- When placed in the House of brothers and sisters the Sun will destroy the preborn or elder brother, Saturn, the after-born or the younger brother and, Mars both the preborn and the after born or the elder and the younger brothers.

- In this way o Bhahmin, the learned astrologer should estimate the strength and weakness of such yogas or combinations and it is then that he should proclaim or speak of the native's effects related to brothers and sisters.
Practice
Chapter 13 gives the 1st house as physique, appearance, intellect, complexion, vigour, weakness, joy and sorrow, and innate nature. What single idea produces that collection?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: The self as it actually shows up — the whole embodied person, inside and out, before anything happens to them.
Look at what is in the list and what is not. Body and mind are both there. Vigour and weakness — capacity — are both there. Joy and sorrow are there, as dispositions rather than events. What is absent is anything the person has or does: no money, no work, no relationships. The 1st is the person themselves, which is why it is both a Kendra and a Trikoṇa and why its lord carries more weight than any other.

The 2nd house holds wealth, food, family, and — heavily in Chapter 15 — speech. What connects money and speech?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Both are what you have gathered around you and can draw on. The 2nd is accumulation and holding: resources, sustenance, the people who are yours, and the words at your disposal.
There is a second and more concrete reading available too. The Sanskrit name is Dhana, and the house's traditional bodily correspondence is the face and mouth — which is where both food and speech pass. That is the Kālapuruṣa mapping from Week 2 doing real work: Taurus is the face, the 2nd house is the 2nd sign from the Lagna, and the correspondence is structural rather than metaphorical. Either route gets you there, and having both is better than having a keyword.

The 3rd house holds valour, siblings, short journeys, servants, and initiatory instruction. What is the idea?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Self-generated effort and reach — what you extend outward under your own power, and who is beside you while you do it.
Courage is the willingness to extend yourself. A short journey is a small extension of your reach. Siblings are the people who move alongside you rather than above you, as parents do. Servants and instruction are both extensions of your own capacity through others. Notice how much better this does than a keyword list at handling a question like should I take on this additional responsibility — a question no verse mentions and the principle answers immediately.

A client asks about a professional qualification they are studying for at night while working. Chapter 13 does not list "professional qualification". Which house or houses, and why?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Primarily the 3rd — sustained self-generated effort — with the 5th for learning and the 10th for the work it is meant to serve.
Reason it rather than look it up. Formal learning belongs to the 5th; the effort of grinding through it belongs to the 3rd; the professional purpose belongs to the 10th. Which of those dominates depends on what the person is actually asking. If they mean "will I pass", weight the 5th. If they mean "can I keep this up", weight the 3rd. If they mean "will it change my work", weight the 10th. This is the whole reason the principle matters more than the list: real questions arrive in words the text never used.
Both the 3rd and the 12th relate to journeys. What distinguishes them?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: The 3rd is a short journey — an extension of your own reach that returns. The 12th is departure, dissolution and what is left behind, so the journey it describes is one that separates you from where you were.
The principle settles a distinction that a keyword list makes arbitrary. It also explains why the 9th shows up in travel questions: the 9th is a long journey undertaken for meaning rather than for business. Three houses, three genuinely different kinds of going somewhere, and you can tell them apart by asking what each house is fundamentally about rather than by memorising which one owns "travel".

Einstein again, with the first three houses picked out. Gemini rises, so the 1st is Gemini, the 2nd Cancer, the 3rd Leo. Before you look at anything else, notice that all three are empty of planets. That is not a problem — it is the situation in most charts, and it is exactly why the lord matters.
- For each of the first three houses: name the sign, the lord, where the lord sits, and its condition. Three lines.
- Now the 3rd house — self-generated effort and reach. Its lord is the Sun, which sits in the 10th in Pisces. State in one sentence, using the principle rather than a keyword list, what that connection would mean. Then check the connection against the prosperity rule from unit 2.
- The 2nd house is Cancer; its lord is the Moon, in the 6th, debilitated. Run the affliction conditions on it and write down exactly which ones are satisfied.
- Hold your reading of the 2nd house lightly and write down what would make you revise it. You will get two chances to revisit it — in Week 5 when you can weigh strength, and in Week 7 when wealth gets its own chapters.
- On your own chart: derive four significations of your 3rd house from the principle before reading Chapter 16, then check.
Check your understanding
Answer from memory first. Looking back at the reading before you try turns a memory test into a copying exercise.
What is the Sanskrit name of the 3rd house, and what does it mean?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.

Answer: Sahaja — 'born together with', which is why it is the house of siblings.
The names from Chapter 8 verse 37 keep paying off. Sahaja tells you the sibling signification is not an arbitrary assignment — it is what the house is named for. Dhana for the 2nd and Tanu for the 1st, body, do the same job.

Chapters 14 to 25 all have roughly the same structure. What is it, and why does noticing it matter?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Each chapter runs through the effects of each planet placed in that house, then the effects of the house's lord placed in various houses, then particular combinations. It matters because once you know the structure you can navigate any of the twelve chapters instantly.
This is the single most useful reading skill for Volume 1's middle. You almost never read one of these chapters straight through in practice; you go to the part you need. Knowing that the planet-in-house material comes first and the lord-in-house material follows makes that a five-second operation instead of a hunt.
Chapter 15 spends considerable space on the manner of someone's speech — whether it is truthful, harsh, sweet, halting. Is that the same subject as the 2nd house's wealth?

Answer: It is the same house treating two of its consequences. Both follow from accumulation and holding, and neither is derived from the other.
A caution comes with this. It is tempting, having found a house's principle, to force every one of its significations into a neat derivation from it. Some of them will not go — BPHS is an assembled text and it contains material that does not reduce to a single elegant idea. The principle is a tool for reasoning and for remembering. It is not a proof that the chapter is systematic throughout.
What you carry forward
Two things grow across the whole course. This unit adds to both.
To your chart-analysis process
- **Step 4 (continued) — identify the relevant Bhāvas.** Work from the house's underlying principle, not from a keyword list, so that questions the text never phrased can still be placed.
To your field manual
- 1st — the embodied self as it actually shows up. Body, mind, capacity, disposition. Nothing you have or do.
- 2nd — accumulation and holding. Resources, sustenance, family, speech. Bodily: the face and mouth.
- 3rd — self-generated effort and reach. Courage, siblings, short journeys, instruction, sustained application.
- Method: find the one idea, derive the list, then check the list against the text and note what does not reduce.
- House-effect chapters (14–25) all run: each planet in that house, then that house's lord in each house, then particular combinations. Navigate to the part you need.
- Three kinds of journey: 3rd short and returning, 9th long and meaningful, 12th departing and separating.
By now you should be able to
- State the organising principle of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd houses
- Derive four significations of a house from its principle, then check against the text
- Recognise the standard structure of a house-effect chapter in BPHS
- Answer a question about a subject not literally listed in Chapter 13
