Week 3 — Birth Conditions, and the First Five Bhavas
Chapter 13 is the hinge of the entire book: it names what the twelve Bhavas are about and gives the one general rule for judging whether any of them is prospering or afflicted. Everything from Chapter 14 to Chapter 25 is its elaboration. Chapters 10 to 12 sit immediately before it, and rather than skipping them we read them as a block that shows how Parashara thinks.
What you should be able to do by the end
Judge whether a Bhava is prospering or afflicted using Chapter 13's stated rule, and explain what each of Bhavas 1 to 5 is genuinely about - as one coherent domain of life, not a list of keywords.
This is a deliberately lighter week, and the reason is not that the material is thin. It is that this is where sustained chart practice begins, and that work does not show up in a word count.
The thing to get right here is the habit of asking what actually holds a Bhava’s meanings together. The fourth house is not a list containing mother, home, property and vehicle. It is the domain of what holds and shelters a life - the ground beneath you - and mother, dwelling, land and inner contentment all follow from that. Get this right for Bhavas 1 to 5 and you will be able to do it unaided for 6 to 12 next week, which is a real saving in both reading and effort.
Chapter 11 deals with Arishta - combinations for early death, written in and for a world with pre-modern infant mortality. It is not erased here and it is not presented as clinical fact. It is taught as classical doctrine, with Parashara’s own remedies in Chapter 12 read immediately alongside it.

3 sittings, cut where the subject changes rather than by the clock. Each one is a reasonable place to stop.
What the chart says about the birth itself
You will have read Parashara's treatment of birth circumstances and Ariṣṭa, know what kind of claims they are, and be able to say how a responsible modern reader handles material written for a world with very different infant mortality.
The hinge chapter
You will know what each of the twelve houses signifies and be able to judge whether any house in any chart is prospering or afflicted, using Parashara's own stated rule.
The first five houses, taught from their principles
You will be able to say what each of Bhāvas 1 to 5 is *about* — one coherent domain each, not a keyword list — and derive most of their significations from that principle without looking them up.
