Week 4 · Unit 3 · Reading the Bhavas
Milestone 2 of 4: Lordship — the idea that connects a chart
The Lord Carries the House
Chapter 26's 144 combinations, taught as one generative pattern — and the lordship map you will use for the rest of the course.
Assumes you have done: The full twelve-house survey — units 1 and 2 of this week, and Week 3
Why this matters
This is the idea that turns a chart from twelve separate judgments into one connected reading, and it is the most powerful interpretive move in Parāśarī Jyotish. A house is not only a place; it is also a link, because the planet that owns it sits somewhere else and carries that house's matters into another house's territory. Chapter 26 gives 144 worked instances of this. You are going to learn the pattern that generates all 144, which takes an hour, rather than the 144, which takes a year and is worth less.
Learn
Everything up to now has treated houses as places. This unit turns them into connections, and it is the difference between listing a chart and reading one.
The idea
The 9th house is fortune. But the 9th house does not act on its own — it is a sign, and that sign has a lord, and that lord is sitting somewhere else in the chart.
Wherever that lord sits is where the 9th house’s matters get worked out.
The 9th lord in the 6th: fortune worked out through difficulty, service, opposition. The 9th lord in the 10th: fortune worked out through public action and career. The 9th lord in the 12th: fortune worked out abroad, or through withdrawal, or through what is spent rather than kept.
Twelve houses, each with a lord, each lord somewhere. Twelve connections. And the chart stops being a set of separate judgments and becomes a structure in which everything is attached to something else.
That is the whole of Chapter 26, applied 144 times.
Why 144 and why you will not learn them
Twelve lords, twelve possible houses each. Chapter 26 works through all of them in a hundred and forty-eight verses and nearly nineteen thousand words — the single largest block in Volume 1.
You are not going to memorise it, and the reason is not that it is too long. It is that memorising it is the wrong relationship to have with it.
Every cell is produced by three inputs:
- The nature of the house the lord rules — what is being carried.
- The nature of the house it occupies — where it is being carried to.
- Its own condition — how well the carrier can carry.
Chapter 26 gives you results for the first two and mostly leaves the third to you. Which means that if you know the twelve houses well — and after Week 3 and the last two units you do — you can reason about any cell before reading it.
Reading one cell properly
Take verse 6, the Lagna lord in the 6th house.
Derive first. The Lagna lord carries the self — body, capacity, disposition. The 6th is opposition, illness, service, debt. So: the self committed to a house of difficulty. Health under pressure. Energy going into contest or obligation. Competence built by being opposed.
Now read it: the native is deprived of bodily pleasures. If the Lagna lord is under the influence of a malefic and has no benefic aspect on him, he will be troubled by an enemy.
Two observations, and both matter.
Your derivation got the direction right. That is the pattern working.
And the verse contains a conditional — the enemy trouble is not stated outright, it is stated if the lord is afflicted and unaspected by benefics. That is the same architecture you met in Chapters 11 and 12: a difficult reading qualified in the text itself. Anyone who quotes the first half of that verse without the second is misrepresenting it.
The register problem
Chapter 26 states things flatly. “The native will have two wives.” “The first born will not live.” “He will be equal to a lion in valour.”
This register is difficult for a modern reader and it should be handled carefully rather than either swallowed or dismissed.
Each verse describes one factor. Chapter 13’s own rule already told you that a house’s condition depends on its occupants, its aspects, its lord’s placement, its lord’s company and its lord’s condition, all at once. A single lordship placement is one of those inputs. It cannot be a verdict, and Parashara’s own judgment rule says so.
Much of the social specificity is located in a time and place. “Two wives” is a statement made inside a particular set of marriage customs. The underlying observation — a configuration that tends toward multiplicity or instability in partnership — may well survive translation to a different society. The literal prediction does not.
And many cells are explicitly conditional, as verse 6 is.
The right use of Chapter 26 is as one strong input among several. It is a lookup table of tendencies, not an oracle, and it was never presented as one.
The lordship map
Here is the artifact this unit produces, and it is worth taking seriously because you will use it constantly from here to Week 13.
For any chart, write out twelve lines. Each line: the house, its sign, its lord, where that lord sits, and that lord’s condition. Then a sentence in the form the Nth lord sits in the Mth, so [this] is worked out through [that].
That is it. Twelve lines, half an hour, and you have converted a chart into a map of how its parts connect.
What makes it powerful is the reuse. In Week 5 you add a strength column. In Week 6 you add functional nature — whether each lord is good or bad for this particular ascendant. In Week 7 you add Avasthās and mark the Mārakas. In Week 8 you map the Viṁśottarī sequence against it, and the lordship map is precisely what turns “Saturn daśā” from a planet’s name into a statement about this person’s life.
Build it once. Add to it every week.
Here is Einstein’s, which is the one the chart work below uses. Read it as twelve sentences rather than as a grid — the ninth lord is Saturn, it sits in the tenth, so fortune is worked out through action in the world.
| House | Sign on it | Its lord | Which sits in | Condition of that lord |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Gemini | Mercury | house 10 (Pisces) | debilitated |
| 2 | Cancer | Moon | house 6 (Scorpio) | debilitated |
| 3 | Leo | Sun | house 10 (Pisces) | neutral |
| 4 | Virgo | Mercury | house 10 (Pisces) | debilitated |
| 5 | Libra | Venus | house 10 (Pisces) | exalted |
| 6 | Scorpio | Mars | house 8 (Capricorn) | exalted |
| 7 | Sagittarius | Jupiter | house 9 (Aquarius) | neutral |
| 8 | Capricorn | Saturn | house 10 (Pisces) | neutral |
| 9 | Aquarius | Saturn | house 10 (Pisces) | neutral |
| 10 | Pisces | Jupiter | house 9 (Aquarius) | neutral |
| 11 | Aries | Mars | house 8 (Capricorn) | exalted |
| 12 | Taurus | Venus | house 10 (Pisces) | exalted |

145-148. O Brahmin, the effects of the Lords of the Houses which have been told to you are to be deduced considering their strengths and weaknesses. The effects of the planet owning two signs are to be deduced based on his two lordships. If in this way contrary effects are indicated it means the effects will be nullified. On the contrary, if effects are of varied nature, these will be obtained. If the strength of the planet is full, it is to be predicted by the learned astrologer that he will yield full effect, he will yield half and one fourth effect in case the strength is half and one fourth respectively. Thus I have told you the effects due to Bhava Lords (Lords of the Houses) in various houses.
Practice

Show the answer and why
Answer: A house's matters travel with its lord, and are worked out in the house where that lord sits.
Everything in Chapter 26 is this sentence applied 144 times. The 9th lord in the 6th means fortune is worked out through difficulty, service and opposition. The 5th lord in the 10th means what you produce is worked out through public action. The formula is mechanical and the results are not, because the two houses interact rather than simply adding.

What are the three inputs that determine what a lord-in-house combination produces?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: The nature of the house it rules, the nature of the house it occupies, and its own condition.
That triple is the generative pattern, and it is why 144 cells are learnable as one idea. Chapter 26 mostly states results for the first two inputs and leaves the third to you — which is why so many of its verses read as unqualified when a real chart is not. Bring dignity and relationship in from Week 1 and the terse cells become usable.
Predict what Chapter 26 will say about the Lagna lord in the 6th house, using the pattern only. Then check verse 6.
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: A prediction along the lines of: the self is worked out through opposition — health under pressure, competence built through difficulty, energy committed to service or contest.
Verse 6 says the native is deprived of bodily pleasures, and adds that if the Lagna lord is under malefic influence with no benefic aspect, he will be troubled by an enemy. Compare that with your prediction and note two things. Your derivation got the direction right — the self committed to a house of difficulty. And the verse adds a conditional clause you could not have derived, which is exactly the kind of specific worth reading the source for. Notice also that the conditional is doing the same work as Chapter 12's cancellations: the difficult reading is qualified, in the text, and quoting the first half alone would misrepresent it.

Chapter 26's verses often read as flat statements — "the native will have two wives", "the first born will not live". How should a careful reader handle that register?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: As statements of a tendency in a specific configuration, to be weighed against the rest of the chart, not as verdicts.
Three reasons, and they compound. Each verse describes one factor out of dozens in a real chart, and Chapter 13's own judgment rule already told you that a house's condition depends on several things at once. The social specifics are located in a particular time and place — "two wives" is a statement about a world with different marriage customs. And Parashara himself qualifies many of these cells with conditions, as verse 6 does. The correct use of Chapter 26 is as one input among many. Treating any single cell as an answer is the most common way this chapter gets misused.
How is Chapter 26 organised, and how would you find the 7th lord in the 11th?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: By ruling house first, then by occupied house within it — twelve blocks of twelve. The 7th lord's block is the seventh; the 11th house is the eleventh cell within it.
That structure is what makes 148 verses navigable in seconds. The Lagna lord runs from verse 1, the 2nd lord follows, and so on. Once you know the ordering you never search this chapter; you index into it. This is exactly what Reference treatment means: the material is fully available and none of it is carried in your head.

This is the biggest piece of chart work so far and it produces an artifact you will use in every remaining week of the course: the lordship map. Below is Einstein's, generated from the chart data, with the twelve lords and where each one sits.
- Read down the lordship table. For each of the twelve houses, write one sentence of the form: the Nth lord sits in the Mth, so [what the Nth house is about] is worked out through [what the Mth house is about]. Twelve sentences, no interpretation beyond that formula.
- Now mark each line with the lord's condition — exalted, debilitated, own sign, neutral. A connection made by an exalted lord and the same connection made by a debilitated one are different findings.
- Pick the three connections that look most consequential and say why you chose them. There is no correct answer; the reasoning is what matters.
- Derive-then-verify: choose three of your twelve and predict what Chapter 26 will say about them using the generative pattern, before looking. Then look. Where you differed, work out whether the text added a specific you could not have derived, or whether your reasoning was wrong.
- Build the same map for Chart C, and for your own chart. These three sheets are the working documents of the rest of the course.
Check your understanding
Answer from memory first. Looking back at the reading before you try turns a memory test into a copying exercise.
The 10th lord sits in the 12th. State what that connection means, using the principle.
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Action and public standing are worked out through what lies outside ordinary boundaries — foreign work, seclusion, institutions, or activity whose costs and outputs are largely invisible.
Notice that this reading is not a verdict, and that several very different lives fit it — a researcher, someone working abroad, someone whose work is in a hospital or monastery, someone whose expenditure exceeds what their work returns. Narrowing between them needs the lord's condition, the rest of the chart, and eventually the timing. The connection tells you the shape; it does not tell you the instance.
Why does this course treat Chapter 26 at Reference depth when it is nearly nineteen thousand words and unmistakably important?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Because its importance lies in the pattern, which is Core, and its bulk is a lookup table, which is Reference. Studying all 144 cells would double the week and teach less than the pattern does.
This is the single load-bearing depth decision in the whole course, and it is worth understanding rather than accepting. The test for whether it was right is behavioural: can you reason about a cell before looking it up, and can you find any cell in under a minute? If both, you can use Chapter 26 completely, having memorised none of it — which is a higher competence than remembering a fraction of the table.
Chapter 18 already told you about the 5th lord in various houses. So does Chapter 26. Why both?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Chapter 18 treats it in the context of the 5th house's own affairs; Chapter 26 treats it as one instance of a general pattern.
They are not redundant and they occasionally emphasise differently. When the two disagree in tone, that is worth noticing rather than resolving — you have two passes at the same configuration from a text assembled over time. Having both routes is part of why the generative pattern works: you can triangulate.
A chart's 9th lord is exalted in the 6th. Another chart's 9th lord is debilitated in the 6th. Same connection. What differs?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: The capacity of the lord to deliver what it carries. The route is the same; the vehicle is not.
Both charts say fortune is worked out through difficulty and service. In the first, the planet doing the carrying is at full strength — difficulty that is genuinely overcome, service that genuinely produces fortune. In the second, the carrier is weak, and the same route becomes attrition. This is why a lordship map without a condition column is half an artifact, and why Week 5's weighing tools matter so much once you have this one.
What you carry forward
Two things grow across the whole course. This unit adds to both.
To your chart-analysis process
- **Step 5 (completed) — examine the house lords.** For every relevant house: where its lord sits, what else that lord rules, and its dignity and condition. The lordship map is a standing artifact, built once per chart and reused.
To your field manual
- The lordship principle: a house's matters travel with its lord and are worked out in the house where that lord sits.
- A lord-in-house result is a function of three things — the house ruled, the house occupied, and the lord's own condition. Ch. 26 supplies the first two; you supply the third.
- Ch. 26 is ordered by ruling house, then by occupied house: twelve blocks of twelve. Index into it, do not search it.
- Derive before you look up. Where the text adds a specific you could not have derived, that specific is the reason to read the source.
- Ch. 26's flat register — 'the native will have two wives' — describes a tendency in one configuration, not a verdict on a life.
- Build the lordship map once per chart, with a condition column. It is reused in Weeks 5, 6, 7, 8 and 13.
By now you should be able to
- State the lordship principle in one sentence
- Predict what Chapter 26 will say about a given lord-in-house combination, then verify
- Locate any of the 144 combinations in under a minute
- Produce a complete lordship map for a chart
