Week 4 · Unit 4 · Reading the Bhavas
Milestone 3 of 4: Closing the shadow-point loop
The Shadow Points in Judgment
Chapter 27 closes the loop Week 1 opened — what the Upagrahas mean, and a chapter that cannot keep its own names straight.
Assumes you have done: Week 1 unit 5 — the Upagraha calculations and the Ketu naming collision
Why this matters
In Week 1 you computed a set of points and were told to wait for their meaning. This is where it arrives. It is also a small, safe place to practise something you will need for the rest of the book: reading a chapter whose own terminology is inconsistent, and deciding what to do about it without either panicking or pretending it is fine.
Learn
Three weeks ago you computed a set of points and were told to wait. Chapter 27 is the wait ending.
What is here
Eighty-seven verses. Seven computed points, each taken through all twelve houses. Dhūma, Vyatīpāta, Paridhi, Chāpa, the fifth point of the chain, Gulika, and Prāṇapada.
The structure is identical to Chapter 26’s: blocks of twelve, ordered by house within each block. Which means you never read it through — you index into it. Gulika starts at verse 62, so Gulika in the 7th is verse 68, and finding it takes about four seconds.
Read the chapter once at pace so you know what is in it. Then treat it as lookup, which is what it is.
The chapter that cannot keep its own names
Now the part worth stopping for, and it is why this material is a good place to practise something rather than merely a loop to close.
Chapter 3 called the fifth point of the Dhūma chain Ketu — which, as you noted in Week 1, is already the name of the ninth graha and has nothing to do with it.
Chapter 27 calls the same point Sikhi in verses 50 to 53. Then Dhwaja in 54 to 57. Then Sikhi again at 58, Dhwaja again at 59, and Sikhini at 60 and 61.
Five names for one object, in two chapters, one of them stolen from something else, and three of them alternating within twelve consecutive verses.
That rule generalises, and it will save you repeatedly in Volume 2 where the catalogue chapters get much longer. In a chapter that enumerates something through the twelve houses, count position. Do not trust the label.
Where these points sit in the evidence
The verses read as flatly as Chapter 26’s. Gulika in the Lagna: the native will be afflicted by diseases, will always have lustful desires, be sinful, crafty, vicious and very miserable.
Taken at face value that is a devastating statement about a great many people, since Gulika is somewhere in every chart and lands in the Lagna about one time in twelve.
Three things put it in proportion.
These are constructions, not bodies. Dhūma is the Sun’s longitude plus 4 signs 13°20′. That is arithmetic, not an object in the sky. Whatever one thinks of planetary significance, a derived point is a further step removed.
Their positions are fragile. Gulika is found by dividing the day into eight parts and taking the ascending degree during Saturn’s portion — which means it moves at the speed of the ascendant. A birth time uncertain by half an hour puts Gulika anywhere in a seven-degree band and quite possibly in the adjacent sign. Every one of these points inherits the full birth-time error, and then some.
Parashara’s own placement of the material says something. This chapter comes after the grahas, after the houses, after the house effects, and after the lords. It is a supplement to a picture already built, and treating it as a headline inverts the order the text itself establishes.
So: use them as a small confirming or qualifying input on a reading you have already established by stronger means. If Gulika in the 7th agrees with what the 7th house, its lord, and Venus were already telling you, your confidence goes up slightly. If it disagrees, note the disagreement and let it pull your confidence down. Never build a reading on one.
What this closes, and what remains open
Week 1 opened three forward references. This closes the second.
- Chapter 9’s two aspect systems, unresolved — Chapter 28 in Week 5. Still open.
- Chapter 3’s Upagraha calculation, meaning deferred — Chapter 27. Closed here.
- Chapter 13’s Avasthā clause, unusable — Chapter 47 in Week 7. Still open.
Keeping a short list like that is a genuinely useful habit with a text this size, and it is worth maintaining your own as you go. BPHS forward-references constantly, and the difference between a reader who tracks it and one who does not is the difference between a book with a structure and a book with holes.
Module 2 ends with the clinic, and it is the first time you will be asked to say what a whole chart means.

This is the source itself. The teaching above prepares you for it; it does not replace it.

86-87. O Brahmin, I have explained to you the effects of the Non luminous planets in the above manner. And whatever other luminous planets like the Sun etc. are there, their effects with regard to the native are to be predicted considering their positions, their aspects and their strengths and weaknesses.

Which points does Chapter 27 give effects for?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Dhūma, Vyatīpāta, Paridhi, Chāpa, the fifth point of the Dhūma chain, Gulika, and Prāṇapada — seven in all, each through twelve houses.
Six of the seven are the chain from Chapter 3 verses 61–64 plus Gulika from 66–70 and Prāṇapada from 71–74. Note that Chapter 27 uses partly different names from Chapter 3 for the same points: Parivesha becomes Paridhi, Indrachāpa becomes Chāpa. Same objects, different labels, six chapters apart.

In verses 50 to 61 the same point is called Sikhi, then Dhwaja, then Sikhi again, then Dhwaja, then Sikhini. What is going on, and what should a reader do?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Several names for one point, used inconsistently within a single passage. Read by position in the sequence rather than by the name.
This is the fifth point of the Dhūma chain — the one Chapter 3 verse 63 called "Ketu", which is also not the graha Ketu. So the same object carries at least four names across two chapters, one of which is already taken by something else entirely. The practical rule is simple and general: in a catalogue that runs through twelve houses in order, the position in the sequence is more reliable than the label. Verses 50–61 are twelve consecutive house placements of one point, whatever any individual verse calls it.

Chapter 27's verses are as flatly stated as Chapter 26's — "the native will be sinful, crafty, vicious and very miserable" for Gulika in the Lagna. How much weight should such a statement carry?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Considerably less than a graha placement, and it should never be used on its own.
Three reasons and they stack. These points are computed rather than observed — they are arithmetic constructions from the Sun's longitude and the clock, not bodies. Their calculation depends on sunrise and on an exact birth time, so their positions are more fragile than any planet's. And Parashara gives them a chapter of their own after the grahas, the houses and the lords, which is itself a statement about where they sit in the order of evidence. Use them as a small confirming or qualifying input on a reading already established by stronger means.
Why did this course leave the Upagrahas half-taught in Week 1 rather than teaching Chapters 3 and 27 together?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Because the text separates them, and following the text's own order means you learn Chapter 27 with houses and lordship already in hand.
The three-week gap was uncomfortable and deliberate. Reading Chapter 27 in Week 1 would have meant reading twelve-house effects before you knew what a house was. This course tracks exactly three such forward references and closes each one explicitly: this is the second closed. The remaining open one is Chapter 13's Avasthā clause, which closes in Week 7.
Apply it to a chart
Chart A — Rama, the teaching chart — A strikingly clean chart from a classical source, followed from Week 1 to Week 13. · about 14 min
Not placed: Mercury, Rahu, Ketu — the source this chart comes from does not say where they go, and nothing has been supplied to fill the space.
| Graha | Sign | House | Degree | Nakshatra | Condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Aries | 10 | degree not recorded | — | exalted |
| Moon | Cancer | 1 | degree not recorded | — | own sign |
| Mars | Capricorn | 7 | degree not recorded | — | exalted |
| Mercury | — | — | — | — | — |
| Jupiter | Cancer | 1 | degree not recorded | — | exalted |
| Venus | Pisces | 9 | degree not recorded | — | exalted |
| Saturn | Libra | 4 | degree not recorded | — | exalted |
| Rahu | — | — | — | — | — |
| Ketu | — | — | — | — | — |
| Lagna | Cancer | 1 | degree not recorded | — | lord Moon |
There is nothing to compute here. Chart A has no birth time, so it has no Upagrahas — which is itself the lesson. Use this section to record what a chart must supply before this chapter can be used at all.
- List what the Chapter 3 calculations require as inputs: sunrise, the exact time of birth, the Sun's longitude, and the day of the week.
- Chart A supplies none of them. Write down, in one sentence, why that means Chapter 27 cannot be applied to it — and why that is a limitation of the data rather than of the technique.
- For Chart B and Chart C, both of which have birth times: say which one could support an Upagraha reading and which one could not, and why. The answer is in the provenance notes in the chart library.
- On your own chart, if your software gives Gulika: note its house, look up the relevant verse in Chapter 27, and then — before believing it — write down three other factors in that house that you would weigh against it.
Check your understanding
Answer from memory first. Looking back at the reading before you try turns a memory test into a copying exercise.
Where would you find what Gulika in the 7th house indicates?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Chapter 27, in the Gulika block — verses 62 to 73, with the 7th at verse 68.
Chapter 27 is ordered by point, then by house, exactly as Chapter 26 is ordered by lord then by house. Seven blocks of twelve. Knowing the ordering is the whole navigation skill for both chapters.

What single fact about these points should most affect how much you trust their placement?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: That they are computed from the exact birth time and sunrise, so their positions inherit every bit of birth-time error and are more fragile than any planetary position.
Gulika in particular is found by dividing the day into eight parts and taking the ascending degree during Saturn's portion — which means it moves as fast as the ascendant does. A birth time uncertain by half an hour puts Gulika anywhere in a seven-degree band, and possibly in the next sign. This is the Chapter 5 lesson from Week 2 applied to a specific case, and it is the main reason the course places these points where it does in the evidence hierarchy.
A reading you have built from houses, lords and dignity says one thing. Gulika's placement suggests the opposite. What do you do?
Write your answer down before opening the explanation.
Show the answer and why
Answer: Note the disagreement, weight the established reading more heavily, and say that the evidence is not uniform.
A computed point does not overturn a conclusion built from planetary placement, lordship and dignity. But it should not be silently discarded either — a disagreement recorded is more honest than a disagreement suppressed, and it is exactly the kind of thing that lowers a confidence rating from strong to moderate. Week 5 gives you a principled framework for exactly this kind of weighing.
What you carry forward
Two things grow across the whole course. This unit adds to both.
To your chart-analysis process
- **Step 8 (opened) — assess condition and support.** Include the computed points where the birth time supports them, weighted below planetary evidence and never used alone.
To your field manual
- Ch. 27 gives twelve-house effects for seven computed points: Dhūma, Vyatīpāta, Paridhi, Chāpa, the fifth chain point (variously Sikhi / Dhwaja / Sikhini / 'Ketu'), Gulika and Prāṇapada.
- Chapter 27 renames several points from Chapter 3. Read catalogue chapters by position in the sequence, not by the label on an individual verse.
- The Upagrahas are computed from sunrise and the exact birth time, so their placements inherit all birth-time error. Gulika moves as fast as the ascendant.
- Evidence hierarchy: planetary placement and lordship first; dignity and strength next; computed points last, as confirmation or qualification only.
By now you should be able to
- Say what the Upagrahas are and how they enter judgment
- Identify the naming inconsistency in Chapter 27 and state how to handle it
- Explain how this chapter closes the reference opened in Chapter 3
- Place the Upagrahas correctly in a hierarchy of evidence
