Verse 2–5

2-5: Maharishi Parasara said, O Brahmin! You have asked a most appropriate question which will benefit one and all. I now unfold the secret of the prevailing Dasa systems.

There are various types of Dasas in vogue but for a common man, Vimshottari (विंशोत्तरी) Dasa is the predominant one. Some have mentioned particularly Astottari (अष्ठोत्तरी) and Shodsottari (षोडशोत्तरी) Dasas. O Brahmin! Ancients have also referred to Dwadasottari (द्वादशोत्तरी), Panchottari (पंचोत्तरी), Shatabdika (शताब्दिका) Dasas and in the same category there are also Chaturashiti-Sama (चितुरशीति समा), Dwisaptati-Sama (द्विसप्तत्ति समा), Shashtihayani (षष्टिहायनी), Shattrishanta-Sama (षिटत्रिंगतप्तमा) Dasas. All these Dasas are based on Nakshatras.

Verse 6–11

6-11: The Rishis have also made mention of Kala (काल) arid Chakara (चक्र)Dasas. But amongst the remaining Dasas, Kala Dasa has the greatest recognition. O Brahmin! Besides these Dasas, some have said about Chara, Sthir, Kendra, Karaka and Brahmagraha (ब्रह्मग्रह) Dasas. O Vipra! apart from these, Mandooki (माण्डूकी), Shoola (भूल), Yogardha (योगार्ध), Driga (दृग) followed by Trikona (त्रिकोण) and Rashi (राशी) Dasas are also there.

O Brahmin! Panchswara Dasa, Yogini Dasa, Pinda Dasa, Amsa Dasa, Naisargie Dasa, Ashtavarga Dasa, Sandhya Dasa, Pachaka Dasa and other Tara Dasa and the like are the different form of Dasas. However, out of these various Dasa forms, all are not acceptable by common consensus.

In some editions, Anshaja Dasa has not been mentioned but the word (तथांशी) figured in the 10th Shicka, gives aclear indication of this Dasa. As such Anshaja Dasa also needs to be considered.

In the foregoing stanzas, Maharishi Parasara has described about 32 types of Dasas. For the convenience and quick recapitulation of the esteemed readers, these Dasas are tabulated as per Table-1.

Verse 12–14

12-14: Commencing from Kritika, the Dasa lords in succession would be Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus; in the three cycles of Nakshatras. The number of Nakshatras between Kritika and the birth Nakshatra be divided

by 9. The remainder will indicate the Dasa lord if counted from the Sun. (Let us suppose the remainder being 5, then the Dasa lord will be Jupiter at the time of birth. The subsequent Dasas will be in the same order i.e. after Jupiter comes the Dasa of Saturn, Mercury, Ketu and so on)

O Brahmin! The full span of life of man in ‘Kalayuga’ is said to be 120 years (Purna Ayu). Therefore, amongst the various Dasas, Vimshottari Dasa is the prime Dasa system.

The remainder will indicate the Dasa lord counting It from the Sun. Suppose the birth was in Dhanista Nakshatra i.e, 23rd Nakshatra. From Kritika, Its number comes to 21 (both inclusive) the remainder will be 3 if this figure js divided by 9. The third planet Dasa-lord is Mars from Sun. Hence, at the time of birth, Dasa of Mars will be in operation.

Verse 15

15: The number of years assigned to each planet (lord of the Dasa) the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu and Venus are 6, 10, 7, 18, 16, 19, 17, 7, 20 respectively. The Dasa at the time is determined from the Nakshatra in which Moon is in transit at the time of birth which is called birth (Janma) Nakshatra.

From the table given below, the readers can early ascertain the planet, their Dasa years and Nakshatras represented by them.

Verse 16

16 : Multiply the Dasa years of the planet, in whose Dasa the birth takes place by Bhayaata [The expired (elapsed) period ot the Nakshatra] and divide it by Bhabhoga [The full period to be traversed by the Nakshatra]. The resultant value will represent the period consumed in the Dasa of the planet till the time of birth. By deducting this figure from the full duration of the Dasa of the planet, the balance Dasa of the said planet is arrived at. (For terms Bhagyaata and Bhabhoga please refer to page 65 of volume 1).

Example-1 : Data: Date of birth 11/12-6-1981; Time of birth- 1-30 (night), Place of birth; Latitude 26°-43' N, Longitude 77°-55'E (The calculations are based on Vishwa Panchanga of B.H. University, Varanasi, India).

Method of calculation

From the above Panchanga, the following data are recorded :

Birth at = 50 Gh. 45 Pal. (in 4th quarter of Hasta Nakshatra)

Bhayaata = 61 Gh. 13 Pal,

Bhabhoga = 64 Gh. 44 Pal.

Step -1

Number of Nakshatras between Kritika and Hasta = 11

Dasa = 11 + 9; remainder 2.

The 2nd Dasa from Sun will be of the Moon which is of 10 years duration.

Step - 2

In order to find out the expired period of the planet upto the time of birth, the following equation (as per shloka-16) may be applied :

Elapsed portion of the Dasa = Bhayaata × Duration of Dasa of the planet
Bhabhoga
Bhayaata = 61 Gh. 13 Pal, = 3673 Pal.
Bhabhoga = 64 Gh. 44 Pal. = 3884 Pal.
= Elapsed portion of Dasa upto birth = 3673 × 10 = 36730
3884 3884

Calculations :

Division Dividend Quotient
3834 36730 9
(-) 34956
1774 × 12*
3884 21288 5
(-) 19420
1868 × 30**
3884 56040 14
(-) 54376
1664

= 9 years, 5 months, 14 days.

Alternative method of calculation

36730 = 9.456
3884
= 9 years + 0.456
0.456 × 12 = 5.472 = 5 months + 0.472
0.472 × 30 = 14.16 = 14 days

9 years, 5 months and 14 days.

Out of the total period of 10 years of the Moon, 9 years, 5 months and 14 days had since consumed at the time of birth, leaving the balance of Dasa of 6 months and 16 days.

Alternative Method

In the present time, the majorly of the astrolorgers work out balance Dasathrough “Ephemeris” instead of Panchangas. The ephimeris record the planetary movements etc. in degree and minutes rather than in Ghatis and Palas. Let us take another example and work out balance of Dasa by employing the data from Lahiri Ephemeris for the year 1994.

**Example - 2 : "Lahiri's Ephemeris" Birth Data:**Date of birth :15-8-1994; Time of birth : 4.30 p.m.; Place of birth: Latitude :28°-43' N Longitute 77°- 55'E.

Method of Calculation :

Step 1

To start with, we need to focus on the Moon's longitude at the time of birth to locate the birth Nakshatra.

The movements of the planets in the ephemeris are with respect to 5-30 a.m., each day. The Moon therefore, traversed by 11 hrs. at the time of birth (5-30 AM - 4-30 p.m.) on that day.

Longitude of the Moon on 16-8-1994 7 22 5
Longitude of the Moon on 15-8-1994 (-) 7 08 3
Motions in 24 hrs. 0 14 2

By referring to log table (Table-2) we find :-

Log 14° - 02° = 0.23305
Log 11 hrs. = 0.33882
0.57187

Near equivalent of log. 0.57181 = 6dg, 26 mts.

The longitude of the Moon at the time of birth : Scorpio 14 dag. 29 mts.

(If the table is not avalibale, Moon's longitude can also be found out in this way. Moon's 24 hrs. (1440') motion on 15.8.94 is 14°-02' (842'). Time lapsed upto 4-30 PM from 5-30 AM = 11 hrs. (660 '), The Moon’s movement upto 4-30 PM (birth time} = 842 × 660 + 1440 = 380 = 6°-267].

Step - 2 : Balance of Dasa :

The longitudinal span of a sign (Rasi) is 30° and of Nakshatra is 13°-20'. As such two and a quarter Nakshatras or 9 quarters of Nakshtras are accomodated under each sign. That is (27 Nakshatra 2 1/4 × 12 = 27) or 108 quarters (27 × 4 = 108) are in the ambit of twelve signs.

The sign, number of Nakshatra under each sign (quarter-wise) and the planetary lords of the the Nakshatras have been tabulated vide Table-3, for the convenience of the readers and placed at Table 3. This table will serve as a ready reckoner to locate the birth Nakshatra and Dasa lord from the longitude of the Moon at the time of birth.

The longitude of the Moon in Scorpio Sign 14°-29' falls in the 4th quarter of Anuradha Nakshatra having the lordship of Saturn. Hence, Saturn Dasa was in operation at the time of birth whose duration is of 19 years.

i) Total period (length) of Anuradha Nak. in Scorpio sign (3° - 20' to 16° - 40') = 13° - 20' = 800"
ii) Balance period of Anuradha Nak. [(16° - 40') - (14° - 29')] = 2° - 11' = 131'
ii) Total span of Saturn Dasa = 19 yrs = 6840 days
Balance of Dasa at birth : = 6840 x 131 800
= 1120 days
3 years- 1 month-10 days.

Calculation of Balance of Dasa from the table :

A most all the ephemarids carry a table for calculating the balance of Vimshottari Dasa at birth on the basis of sidereal longitude of the Moon. A similar table is also placed as Table-4 to ascertain the balance of Dasa without getting involved into the complcated calculations.

The first column indicates Moon's longitude from 00° to 30° at an interval of 20’. The subsequent four columns represent a group of three signs. Down below in these columns, we find the planet (being the Dasa lord) and years, months and days corresponding to the longitude of the Moon.

In order to find the balance of the Dasa, we have first to locate the nearest Moon's longitudinal position. Similarly, the column of the Moon sign is to be identified. Now move horizontally from this point of nearest Moon's longitude upto the column of natal Moon sign and record the balance Dasa in years, months and days. Thereafter, the proportionate part for the longitude of Moon (i.e. with in 20') may be located from Table- 4B under the column of identified Dasa lord and substract from the figure arrived at from Table-4A to know the exact Dasa balance of Dasa at the time of birth of the native.

An illustration will give a clear insight on the use of the table. We take the data of the alternative method of example-1. In this case, the Moon is in Scorpio with longitude of 14°-29' at the time of birth. The nearest Moon's longitude in the Table is 14°-20' and the balance of Dasa at this longitude is to be found out from the last column which represents signs Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Itindicates ruling Dasa of Saturn with balance period as :

Years Months Days
At 14°-20' 3 3 27
tor 0'- 9' (Less)
(fromtable-4B) 0 2 17
3 1 10
3 years 1 month 10 days

In the previous pages, there is frequent mention of ‘Dasa’. The expression ‘Dasa’over there actually relates to Mahadasa or Main Period of the concerned planet. Besides, Mahadasa, there are Antar Dasa (sub period), Pratyantar Dasa (Sub-Sub period) etc. these terms will be adequately explained as we progress further in this chapter. Therefore, the expression ‘Dasa’intends for Mahadasa (Main period) and shall not be confused with any other kind of Dasasviz. Antar or Pratyantar etc. (Sub or Sub-Sub period). The balance of Dasa of the planet at the time of birth is worked out in the preceding paragraphs is also in respect of unconsumed Mahadasa of the said planet. With this unexpired major period of the planet, commences the Dasa cycle of 120 years in Vimsottari Dasa system. Let us lift the position of balance Dasa from Example-2 and draw the Dasa cycle.

Verse 17–20

17-20: Maharishi Parasara said, O Brahmin! If Rahu excepting in the Ascendant (Lagna) is posited in an Angle (Kendra) or a Trine (Trikona) from the lord of Ascendant (Lagna lord), some learneds adopt Astottari Dasa system.

The Astottari Dasa commences with the Sun Dasa covering four Nakshatras with Aridra being the first one. Three Nakshatras thereafter are assigned to the Moon. Next four go to Mars followed by three Nakshatras for Mercury Dasa. Again, next four Nakshatras are entrusted to Saturn Dasa which is succeeded by Jupiter Dasa with subsequent three Nakshatras. Rahu Dasa comes next with four and last is the Dasa of Venus with three left over Nakshatras. (These planets are the lord of the Nakshatras which are under their fold). The ruling Dasa lord is determined through counting in the above order upto the birth Nakshatra.

O Brahmin! Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Saturn, Jupiter, Rahu and Venus are the Dasa lords. Excepting Ketu, all the other planets are covered in this system. The Dasa period starting from the Sun is 6, 15, 8, 17, 10, 19, 12 and 21 years respectively.

There is unanimity on the fact that if the native is born in Shukla Paksha, (brighter half of the lunar course) the prediction should be done through Vimsottari Dasa and for the birth during Krishna Paksha, (darker half of the lunar course) Asttotari Dasa system be employed.

Astottari Dasa has 108 years cycle and Ketu is not in the scheme of things. However, Abhijita Nakshatra has been included and as such 28 Nakshatras are operative in this system. It may, however, be noted that Abhlijita has no independent status. The span (arc or length of operation) of Abhijita Nakshatra constitues of the last quarter of Uttar Ashada and first 1/15th part of Shravana Nakshatras. One Nakshatra has an arc of 13°-20° (800'). With the contribution of Uttar Ashada and Shravana Nakshatra, the arc of Abhijita works out as under :

Mts. Sec.
1/4th part of Uttara Ashada = 200 00
1/15th part of Shravana = 53 20
The arc of Abhijita = 253 20

Consequently, the arc of Uttara Ashada and Shravana Nakshatras gets reduced to :

Uttara Ashada = 800' - 200' = 600' - 00"
Shravana = 800 - (53-20') = 746' - 40"

The native is said to have been born in Uttar Ashada if the birth is in the first three quarters of the Nakshatra. Similarly, the birth will be considered, in Shravana Nakshatra and if it is after 53' - 20" of the Ist quarter of the Nakshatra. When birth occurs in the gap of 253' - 20" between Uttara Ashada and Shravana Nakshatras, the native supposed to have taken birth in Abhijita Nakshatra. The Bhayaata and Bhabhoga of these three Nakshatras should be worked out keeping these factors in view.

Verse 21–22

21-22 : O Brahmin! "In the event of maletic planets, the span (period) of each Nakshatra is 1/4th of the prescribed period of the planet while in the case of benefic planets, each Nakshatra's spanis to the extent of 1/3rd period of the planet. The expired period of the birth Nakshatra is ascertained in the same manner as in Vimsottari Dasa system, that is the period traversed by the birth Nakshatra in Astottari Dasa be multiplied by Bhayaata and divided by Bhabhoga of the Nakshatra. The Dasa balance is also arrived at in the same fashion”.

Verse 23

23 : O Brahamin! “If the birth is in the day time during Krishna Paksha or in the night in Shukla Paksha and in order to ascertain specific results, Astottari Dasa be adopted”.

As per Shloka 21-22, the procedure of ascertaining ‘Dasa Balance’ of the planet at the time of birth is the same as in the case of Vimsottari Dasa. The first step is to locate the associated Nakshatra of the Moon at birth time. (Janma Nakshatra ). The corresponding planet, of the birth Nakshatra (refer Table-3) will have the ruling Dasa at the time of birth. As stated earlier so also is evident from Table-5, the total period of the planet has been equally divided amongst the Nakshatras in its fold. Accordingly, Bhayaata and Bhabhoga of the birth Nakshatra is to be found out like Vimsottari Dasa system and balance Dasa is ascertained. The periods of the subsequent Nakshatras (of the Dasa lord) to the birth Nakshatras, if any, is to be addedto arrive atthe Dasa balance of the planet being the Dasa lord.

From Table-5, it may be seen that the span of each Nakshatra is 880'(13°-20') except the Nakshatras of Saturn as indicated in the foot note. The Satrun’s Nakshatra are having varied spans due to the introduction of Abhijita Nakshatra whose arc is carved from Uttara Ashada and Shravana Nakshatras as explanied previously. Therefore, at the time of birth if any of these Nakshatras is involved, a special care must be taken in calculatting the Dasa balance. Since span of Uttara Ashada is reduced by one quater, only first three quaters shall be taken into account for Bhabhoga of this Nakshatra.

Example - 3

Gh. Pal.
Suppose Bhabhoga of Uttara-Ashada = 64 20
Bhayaata (period already consumed) = 25 20

It shows that the native was born in the 2nd quarter of Uttara- Ashada (one quater = 16Gh:5Pal) and Bhayaata is between 1st and 2nd quarters. Since 1/4 span goes to Abhijita and is reduced from Bhabhoga, the operative Bhabhoga of Uttara Ashada will be :

Gh. Pal.
60 20
(-) 16 05
48 15

However, Bhayaata 25 Gh. 20 Pal. (1520 Pal.) will remain unchanged.

Uttar-Ashada is assigned to Saturn who has period of 10 years or 120 months and each Nakshatras has 2 yrs.-6months = 30 months (see Table-4). Therefore :

Expired Period = Bhayaata × 30 = 1520 × 30 = 45600
Bhabhoga 2895 2895
Bhayaata × 2.5 yrs = 1520 × 2.5 = 1.31 yr.
Bhabhoga 2895
1.31 = 1 yr + 0.31
0.31 × 12 = 3.72 = 3 months + 0.72
0.72 × 30 = 21.6 = 22 days
= 1 yr 3 months 22 days

15 months, 22 days 32 Gh, 20 Pal

or

1 yr 3 months, 22 days 32 Gh, 20 Pal

Since at the time of birth 2yrs. - 6 months (30 months) period of Poorva Ashada had already been consumed, this period should be added to the expired portion of Uttara-Ashada to arrive at the expired period of Satum.

3 9 22 32 20

By deducting the period already consumed in the saturn Dasa till the time of birth from the natal period of 10 years, we get the ‘Dasa Balance’ of Saturn at birth time.

Years Months Days Gh. Pal.

Alternative Method :

The ‘balance Dasa’ can also be worked out in the following manner :

Deduct the expired period of Uttara-Ashada from the full period of the Nakshatra.

Months Days Gh. Pal.
30 00 00 00
(-) 15 22 32 20
14 07 27 40

Add 60 months (30 months each of Abhijita and Sharavana (last two Nakshatras of Saturn) we get :

Months Days Gh. Pal.
14 07 27 40
(+) 60 00 00 00
74 07 27 40

6 years, 2 months, 7 days 27 Gh. and 40 Pal.

Says 6 years, 2 months and 7 days.

Like Vimsottari Dasa, Astottari’s balance Dasa can also be calculated on the basis of longitude of the Moon at birth time. The method is like this, convert the longitude into minutes and divide it by 800' (13°-20' arc of the Nakshatra). The quotient will indicate the expired period of the preceding Nakshatras and the remainder will represent the period consumed by the birth Nakshatra, By deducting from the total span, the unexpired period of the birth Nakshatra is arrived at.

Example-4 :

Longitude of the Moon, from the example of Vimshottari Dasa may be referred,

Moon's longitude : 0 Sign, 26 deg., 47 mts. 25 Sec.
= 16O7' - 25" or 1607.42
= 1607'.42 ÷ 800 = 2 remainder 7.42

The full periods of Aswini and Bharani Nakshatra have since expired and 7.42' of Kritika (birth Nakshatra) has also been consumed. From Table-5, it may be seen that Kritika is the first Nakshatra of Venus. Hence Venus Dasa is running at the time of birth.

Balance period of Kritika :

The total period of Kritika is 7 years or 2555 days.

Period already consumed Kritika = 7.42 × 2555 = 23.7 Days
800

say 24 days

Balance period = Yrs, Months Days
Total Period = 07 00 00
Less: Period consumed = 00 00 24
06 11 06

Balance Dasa of Venus :

Balance of Kritika = 06 11 6
Period of Rohini = 07 00 00
Period of Mrigshira = 07 00 00
20 11 06

20 years, 11 months and 6 days

Alternative Method :

The balance of Dasa of Venus could be worked out straight away. Since Kritika is the first Nakshatra in Venus, the period consumed by this Nakshatra will be the period in Venus Dasa at the time of birth. Therefore, the expired period of Venus will be as follows :

= 7.42 × 21 × 36 = 23.37 days ≈ says 24 days
2400

Balance Dasa of Venus :

Years Months Days
Period of Venus = 21 00 00
Less: Period expired = 00 00 24
20 11 06

24-26 : If Ascendant (Lagna) is in the Hora of the Moon in Krishna Paksha (waning Moon) or in the Sun’s Hora during Shukla Paksha (waxing Moon), Shodsottari Dasa be adopted for Prognoslication. Count the number of Nakshatras from Pushyami tothe birth Nakshatra and divide it by 8. The remainder will point out the Dasa of the planet barring Rahu, if counted in the order of the Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Ketu, Moon, Mercury and Venus. The Dasa years are from 11 to 18 years with an accretion by one year for each planet in seriatim (i.e., Sun 11, Mars 12, Jupiter 13, Saturn 14, Ketu 15, Moon 16, Mercury 17 and Venus 18 Years).

Example-5 :

A native has taken birth in Mrigshira Nakshatra and his birth was in the Krishna Paksha and the Ascendent was in Moon's Hora, the Shodsottari Dasa system will give satisfactory results.

Suppose Bhayaata of Mrigshira is 20 Gh.- 30 Pal:(1230 Pals.) and Bhabhoga being 60 Gh., 10 Pal. (3610 Pals.). As per the Table-6 the Sun Dasa will be ruling at the time of birth (From Pushyami the Mrigshira Nakshatra is ahead of 25 count and if we divide this figure by 8, the remainder comes to 1 i.e, Ist planet which is Sun) Sun has period of 11 years :

Expired Period of the Sun : 1230 × 11 = 13530 = 3.748 yrs.
3610 3610

= 3 years, 8 months, 29 days.

Alternative method of Calculation :

3.748 yrs = 3 yrs + 0.748
0.748 × 12 = 8.976 months
0.976 × 30 = 29.28 days
= 3 years, 8 months, 29 days

Balalnce Dasa of the Sun:

Years Months Days
Period of the Sun = 2 11 00
Less : Expired Period = 3 8 29
7 3 1
= 7 years, 3 months and 1 day

Number of the Nakshatras from the birth Nakshatra to Revati Nakashatra be reckoned and divided by eight. The remainder will indicate the planet as the lord of Dasa by serially counting from the Sun, Jupiter, Ketu, Mercury, Rahu, Mars, Saturn and the Moon having period 6, 7,9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19 and 21 years respectively (An addition of 2 years in the successive Dasas). 32-34 : in the event of Ascendent (Lagna) being Vargottama (वर्गोत्तम) i.e. having the some Ascendent in Navamsa (1/9th Division), the Shatabdika Dasa system will be suitable for prognostication. Count the number of Nakshatras from Revati to the birth Nakshatra and divide it by 7. The remainder will indicate the Dasa lord in the order of the Sun Moon, Venus Mercury, Jupiter, Mars, Saturn. The period of these Dasa lords are 5, 5, 10, 10, 20, 20 and 30 years respectively.

Like Dwadashottari Dasa system, here also the number of Nakshatras are reckoned from Revati to the birth Nakshatra but the counting is done in the direct order rather than in the reverse order as was the case in the Dwadashottari system. The other distingushing feature is that here only 7 planets instead of 8 are considered and Rahu and Ketu are totally out of reckoning and are replaced by Venus. Rest of the procedure for calculating the balance period of the Dasa lord remained the same as laid down in the Vimsottari Dasa system.

Since it is less than 7, the remainder remains as 6 only and hence Mars Dasa will be running at the time of birth. From the said example, the ‘FACTOR’ Bhayaata/Bhabhoga (1230 ÷ 3610) comes to 0.341, Hence the expired period of Mars Dasa = 0.341 × 20 = 6.82 yrs. or 6 years 9 months 25 days. Substracting from 20 yrs (total period), the balance Dasa of Mars will come to 13 yr. 2 months 5 days.

40-41: If the sun is located in the Ascendant Shasti Hayani Dasa will be most suitable for such natives. Commencing from Aswini Nakshatra, a cluster of 3 and 4 Nakshatras, taken alternatively would represent the Dasa lord in the order of Jupiter, the Sun, Mars, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Saturn and Rahu. First three Dasas of the planets would each be of 10 years duration and the last five Dasas would have 6 years each.

If we take cue from example-5, the birth is in the Mrigshira Nakshatra which is 5th from Aswini. Therefore, the birth is in the Dasa of the Sun of 10 years period. There are 4 Nakshatras in this group, each will be having a span of 2 1/2 years. Verse 44–49

44-49 : The periods of 5 Ghatis (2 hrs.) astride the setting of the semi-disc of the sun and like wise, 5 Ghatis (2 hrs.) proceding and 5 Ghatis (2 hrs.) succeeding the Sun risei.e. aspanof 10 Ghatis (4 hrs.) each is termed as the twilight period (Sandhya) of evening and morning respectively. As such both these Sandhyas are constituted of 20 Ghatis (8 hrs.) the 20 Ghatis period (4 hrs.) of the day (i.e. the gap between morning and evening Sandhyas) is called POORNA (पूर्णा) and similarly, 20 Ghatis (8 hrs.) of the night is named as MUGDHA (मुग्धा). 10 Ghatis Sandhya of the sunrise and 10 Ghatis Sandhya of the sun set are called KHANDA (खण्ड) and SUDHA (सुधा) respectively.

lf the birth occurs in Poorna or Mugdha, multiply the period (Ghatis) consumed at birth in the said portion by 2 and divide it by 15. The product be expressed in years, months etc. and reckoned as a constant factor. Multiply this factor by 1 to 9 in natural order, the Kala Dasa of the corresponding planet starting from Sun to Rahu, again in normal planelary order is achieved. In case the birth is in the span of Khanda or Sudha, the expired period upto the birth be multiplied by 4 and then divided by 15. This product also be used as aconstant factor in calculating the Kala Dasa of the planets in the same manner.

(i)**Khanda (खण्डा) :** Day and night consist of 60 Ghatis (24 hrs). The period of 10 Ghatis i.e. 5 Ghatis (2 hrs.) prior and 5 Ghatis (2 hrs.) later to the Sun rise is called morning twilight (Sandhya). The Sandhya of the morning is called Khanda.

(ii)**Sudha (सुधा) :** In the identical fashion 10 Ghatis of the evening i.e. 5 Ghatis (2 hrs.) astride sun set time constitute the evening twilight (Sandhya).

(iii)**Poorna (पूर्णा) :**The period of 20 Ghatis (8 hrs.) between both the Sandhyas i.e. Khanda 10 Sudha is known by the name Poorna.

(iv)**Mugdha (मुग्धा) :** Similarly, the 20 Ghatis (8 hrs.) portion from Sudha to Khanda is termed as Mugdha.

The readers must have noticed from the text that the only intricacy in calculating the Kala Dasa is to first identify the segment (amongst the four above segments) in which the birth has taken place and then to figure out as to how much time has elapsed from the beginning of the said segment and the birth time.

The rest of the calculations and pin-pointing the ruling Dasa at the time of the birth is a simple affair. However, the principles set out for this purpose are reiterated as under :-

(i)It a native is born in the period between Poorna or Mugdha, it is first of all necessary to know as to how much time has been passed (in terms of Ghatis or hrs./minutes) in Poorna or Mugdha upto the birth. The said time be multipied by 2 and then divided by 15, The resultant value shall be multiplied by the numbers assigned to the planet (Sun-1; Moon-2; Mars-3; Mercury-4; Jupiter-5, Venus-6; Saturn-7; Rahu-8 and Ketu-9) to arrive at the Dasa of the respective planet.

(ii)The procedure for calculating Dasas of the planet if the birth is in the duration of Knanda or Sudha, except the elapsed period upto birth is multiplied by 4 instead of 2 and then divided by 15, rest ofthe steps remain unchanged.

(iii)It may also be understood that if the birthis on Sunday, the first Dasa will that be of the Sun and if Monday, the Dasa cycle will start from the Moon and so on. Since Dasa of Rahu and Ketu are also in the scheme, their Dasas will figure at 8th and 9th portion,

Example - 6:

Suppose the birth is at 2 Gh. 25 Pal. after the sunrise on Monday. Since it s less then 5 Gh., the birth is reckoned in ‘Khanda’(Sandhya). In order to find out the time elapsed from the commencement of Khanda, 5 Gh. (period prior to the sunrise) be added which comes to 7 Gh., 25 Pal.- period and since has been passed in Kanda segment.

Calculations :

7 Gh. - 25 Pal = 7.416 Gh. × 4 = 29.66 [25 +100/66]

29.66 + 15 = 1.977 = 1 yr. + 0.977

0.977 × 12 = 11.724 = 11 months + 0.724

0.724 × 30 = 21.72 = 22 days (Day)

= 1 yr, 11 months, 22 days call it factor "A" =

= Sun Dasa = A × 1 = 1 yr. months 22 days

= Moon Dasa = A × 2 = 3 yrs. 11 months 14 days

= Mars Dasa = A × 3 = 5 yrs. 11 months 6 days

Likewise, the Dasas of the other planets could be worked out. Since the birth being on Monday, the first Dasa would be of the Moon.

The method of calculating Kala Dasa enunciated in the similar books published by M/s. Khemchand Shrikrishan Das Publications (Bombay) and Thakur Prashad & Sons Booksellers (Varanasi) is at variance. According to them, if the native is born in Poorna segment, the elapsed period in Poorna [time from sunrise to birth-5 Gh.] shall be multiplied by 6 instead of 2. Similar treatment de given in the event of the birth being in part of Mugdha. Similarly, for Khanda and Sudha segments the elapsed period in their respective portions is to be multiplied by 12 rather by 4.

Further, the product in respect of all the above cases need to be divided by 45 (against 15). The resulting figure should be taken as a constant factor (Dhruanka). The procedure for calculating individual planetary Dasa remained the same i.e. the factor is to be multiplied by the serial number 1,2,3........... 8, 9 to ascertain the Dasas order of Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Ketu respectively as illustrated in example-6.

Here the common feature is that the multiplieres are three times in both the cases and so is the division. Since multiplier and divisor are enhanced by the same denomination, the net result will remain the same. However, the reason for such divergent opinions could not possibly by figured out through any classical works known to this humble author.

Verse 50–51

50-51 : In the event of birth taking place in the night, the Dasa will originate from the sign of the Ascendant (Lagna Rasi). If the birth happened to be in the day, the Dasa will start from the sign which tenants the lord of the Ascendant (Lagna Lord). When the birth occurs in the period of twilight (Sandhya), the sign of the second house will initiate the Dasa. Each Dasa of the sign is of 10 years duration. Since the pattern of these Dasas is compatible with the twelve zodiacal signs, it is appropriately called as Chakra Dasa system.

The second situation is when the native's birth is in the day time and the sign that occupies the lord of the Ascendant will initiate the Dasa cycle. Again ff the Capricorn is the sign rising at the time of birth and Saturn is posited in the sign of Virgo, the Dasa cycle will begin from Virgo and succeeded by Libra, and so on.

The third eventuality covered in this system is the occurence of birth in the duration of twilight. In that case, the sign of the second house would give the lead. Taking cue from the Previous two situations when Capricorn being the rising sign, the Dasa will commence from Aquarius followed by Pisces, Aries in that order.

52-53: Maharishi Parasara asserted - O Vipra! Prostrating before Lord Shiva, I now perorate Kalachakra Dasa, as it was narrated to Goddess Parvati by Lord Shiva in the ancient time, for the savants to enable them to give righteous interpretations to the populace.

Kalachakra (wheel of time) Dasa is a very important Dasa system, despite the fact that it appears slightly difficult because of non- universality of the rules and difference in their inte mpretations. Nevertheless, it is still popular on account of its employing wider spectrum of the Nakshatras in the system.

Kalachakra Dasa commences within each quarter (Pada) of Moon's Nakshatra at birth. 27 Nakshatras form 108 quarters (1 Nakshatra has 4 quarters) one quarter of the Nakshatra represents 1/9th part (Navamsa) of a sign (Rashi). Therefore, Kalachakra Dasa is a Navamsa - Rashi Dasa. The Dasa system has Striking similarlity with the Navamsa Dasa of the Jamini Sutras (aphorisms).

Kalachakra Dasa system canbe effectively applied in predicting the Maraka (time of death) and Arista (misfortune) of the native. Actually, through this Dasa system, astounding predictions have been made. Kalachakra Dasa system is capable of delineating correct events relating to the material comforts, happiness, success in ventures etc. Therefore, Kalachakra Dasa can be studied and applied with great advantage.

Kalachakra Dasa is Nakshatra oriented Dasa system and is based on the position of the Moon in a quarter (Pada) of a Nakshatra. The 27 Nakshatras are classified in nine groups of three Nakshatras each. The 12 quarters of 3 Nakshatras are ascribed to 12 signs. (Navamsa-sign). These 27 Nakshatras are counted three in a row and are arranged ina group of Sand 4 triads (taking them alternatively). The group of five having odd numbers are called ‘Savya’ and the even ones are termed as ‘Apsavya’. The Table-16 appended will make the position quite lucid.

The 12 quarters of the triad of Savya Nakshatras are assigned to 12 signs in the forward direction while 12 quarters of Apsavya Nakshatras belong to the 12 signs reckoned in the reverse orders.

Looking into the Dasa order as could be made out from the preceding Shlokas, it is quite evident that in the Savya group of Nakshatras, the first cluster of S Nakshatras Aswini, Punarvasu Hasta etc. and the 3rd cluster of Kritika, Ashlesha etc. has identical pattern, while middle cluster is a different one; call it spur 1,2,3.

Similarly, Apsavya groups of Nakshatra also has the same type of arrangement. Therefore, in Savya there are ten Nakshatras in one bunch (Spur-1 and Spur-3) anc five Nakshatra in another bunch (Spur-2) and in Apsavya, eight (Spur-1 and Spur-3) and four (Spur-2) Nakshatras are in the other two bunches. For the convenience of the readers, the proposed assortment of Nakshatras are shown in a tabular form vide table No. 16-A.

Groupification of Nakshatras into fourclusters (Two of Savya and two of Apsavya) are in line with the description contained in the foregoing Shlokas, wherein the arrangement of Dasas in the four quarters of Aswini Bharani, Rohini and Mrigshira clusters have been elaborated. These Shlokas also contained directions to follow the similar pattern in respect of other Naksha.ras under these groups. The Dasa patterns as pronounced by the Sage in these Shlokas are being illustrated in a tabular form. The four tables so drawn would ellucidate the principies. Table 17-Ais forthe 1st/3rd Spurs and Table 17-B for the 2nd spur of Savya Nakshatra while Table 18-A and Table 18-B represent the 1st/3rd Spurs and 3rd spur of Apsaya Nakshatra respectively.

Deha & Jeeva :

Another important factor in Kalachakra Dasa system is the concept of Deha and Jeeva signs. The first sign of the lord of the Dasa in Savya Nakshatra has been classified a ‘Deha Sign’ while last Dasa sign termed as Jeeva Sign’. For the Apsavya Nakshatra converse is the case. Here 1st Dasa lords’ signs are reckoned as ‘Jeeva’ and the last sign of the Dasa lord is nominated as Deha. The Deha and Jeeva play a very important role while delineating the effects of the Dasas, This aspect will get cleared as we progress.

The length of the Dasa period of the different signs and their lords is contained in Shlokas 59 to 70 and the same has been Incorporated in the table 17-A, 17-B, 18-A and 18-B. However, these term are elaborately explained in shlokas 94-95 (to follow). Briefly, it can be said that any kind of affliction on Deha or Jeeva by more than one malefics would signity calamitical types of happenings. Therefore, these vital dispositions which are potentially charged in bringing grave moments in the native’s lite, shall be borne in mind while giving interpretations. The revelations are to be made rather skillfully and any kind of casual approach be kept away. Otherwise, it will have the telling effects on the native

Verse 85–86

85-86: The life span of a native or a querist, is reckoned from the quarter (Pada) of the Nakshatra effective at birth time or atthe time the query is raised. Whatever number of years ascribed tothe signs (representing the said quarter) happened tobe the lite span ofthe individual. Many Astrological scholars opined that if the birth is in the first part (beginning) of the quarter, the native is bestowed fullife span (पूर्णायू) and ifin the middle of the quarter, the person wil! have half the span of his life. Ifthe birth is at the tag end of the quanter, the native may undergo deathlike sufferings.

Navamsas of the quarters (Pada) of the Nakshatra :

Verse 87–88

87-88: The learneds may make themselves acquainted with the terms quarter (Pada) of the Nakshatras through these fundamentals. Now I describe the method of apportioning the quarters of the Nakshatras. Divide the number of Nakshatras Passed from Aswini by three. Ignoring the quotient, multiply the remainder by four and there after add the number of the quarters (Padas) of the operating Nakshatra. The resultant figure will indicate the Navamsa sign on counting it from the Aries sign,

मेषे शतं वृषेऽक्षाष्टौ मिधुने त्रिगजाः समाः ।
कर्कटेंऽगजाः प्रोक्तास्तावन्तस्तत्‌-त्रिकोणयोः ॥ ८९ ॥

Verse 89

89 : In the Kalachakra Dasa, the full life span (Poornayu) for the Aries-Amsa will be of 100 years, Taurus-Amsa 85, Gemini- Amsa 83 and Cancer-Amsa 86 years, The 5th and 9th signs from these signs will also have the same number of years.

एवं महादशारम्भो भवेदंशाद्यथा क्रमात् ।

Verse 90–91

90-91: The elapsed period (in Gh, and Pal.) of the quarter (Pada) of the birth Nakshatra be multiplied by the Dasa period and then divided by 15. The resultant value represents the expired Period. After substracting if from the total number of years, the balance Dasa period is arrived at. Mahadasas be calculated commencing from this balance of Dasa period.

Example 7 :

Anative is born in the 1st quarter of the Kritika. Thisis a ‘Savya’ Nakshatra. The lord (Deha) being Mars and Jeeva lord is Jupiter (Refer Table-17A). The Bhayaata of Kritika is 0 Gh, 36 Pal. - 20 Vipal and Bhabhoga being 65 gh. 22 Pal.

1/4th of Bhabhoga = 65 Gh. − 22 Pal. = 65 gh. - 22 Pal. -30 Vipal
4

This is the value of one quarter of the Nakshatras period elapsed in this quarter = 0 Gh. - 36 Pal. - 20 Vipal.

The full span Is 100 years,

Expired period × 100 = 36 Pal. - 20 Vipal. × 100
= 3600 Pal. 2000 Vipal.
= 60 Gh. 33 Pal. - 2 Vipal.
= 60.56 Gh.

Since the birth is in the 1st quarter, the same value be taken as expired period (need not be deducted from Bhayaata). By multiplying the expired period by 15 we get:

Expired period = 4 years 0 Months and 13.32 days (say, 13 days)

From Tabie-17-A the Mahadasa of the 1st quarter of the Kritika (Savya Nakshatra) commences fromthe sign Aries (Deha) with Dasa lord being Mars which has period of 7 yaars.

Years Month Days
The balance Dasa 7 00 00

Accordingly, the Mahadasa cycle in respect of 1st quarter of Kritika (Savya Nakshatra) which is of 100 years is shown as per Table 20:

TABLE - 20

TOTAL 19 5 2047

The apropos maxim could also be explained in this manner. The jull value (in Ghatis & Palas) of one quarter of the Nakshatra encompasses the corresponding complete fife span. Accordingly, the expired lite span could be ascertained trom the elapsed portion of the Nakshatra’s quarter at the time of birth.

Formula = Expired portion of quarter × full span (year)
Full value of Nakshatra's quarter
= Expired period of birth.

One fourth of the Bhabhoga equals one quarter (Pada). Therefore, the value of the quarter (Pada) would be different for each native.

Inthe aforesaid example, with a viewto have an easy calculation, the Bhabhoga is taken as 60 Ghatis and 1/4th of which i.e. 15 Ghatis is reckoned for the quarter of the birth Nakshatra, However, in order to get into the finer details, one should only taka 1/4th of the Bhabhoga because it will make fot of difference in the final figure of the expired period. This aspect will get further clarified in the next Shloka.

पदस्य भुक्तघट्याद्यैः स्वाब्दमानं हतं ततः ।
भभोगांध्रिहृतं भुक्तं, भोग्यं मानाद्‌ विशोधितम्‌ ॥ ९२ ॥

Verse 92

92:The consumed Ghatis and Palasof the current Nakshatra quarter (Pada) be multiplied by the total number of years of the said quarter (Pada) and the resultant value is divided by the 1/4th part of the Bhabhoga and this net product is deducted from the Dasa period and the Dasa balance could be obtained at birth.

Alternative method:

चन्द्राङकाशकला भुक्ताः स्वाब्दमानहताः हृताः ।
द्विशत्या भुक्तवर्षाद्यं ज्ञेयं भोग्यं ततो बुधैः ॥ ९३ ॥

Verse 93

93: The expired portion ofthe Moon's Navamsa be mu itiplied by the value (in terms of years) of the running quarter (Pada) of the Nakshatra and divide it by 200° (30°-20°) the consumed period (in year, months etc.) could be obtained. By deducting this value trom the full Dasa span, the balance Dasa al the time of birth is so ascertained.

Example - 8

Let us suppose the longitude of the Moon is Os-26°-27", Which is equalte 1607'. The are (length) of Nakshatra is 3°-20' or 800". If we divide 1607 by 800, the out come will be; quotient = 2 and remainder = 7’. Therefore, two Nakshatras of the Moon have since Passed at birth and 7' in the 3rd Nakshatra (Kritika) have also expired,

One quarterof the Nakshatrais equal to 200' (800' ÷ 4). Therefore, as per the rule, 7' be divide by 200 and the remainder will again be 7'. Hence on 7' have already been a spent in Kritika Nakshatra.

Kritika being Savaya Nakshatra have a total span of 100 years (Table - 17-A).

∴ 7 × 100 = 700 ÷ 200 = 3.5 years.

Hence the expired period = 3 yrs. and 6 months.

in Kritika Nakshatra Deha Rasi (first sign is Aries and the 9th sign (Jeeva) is Sagittarius (Table - 17-A) since only 3 year and 6 months have elapsed, the running Mahadasa will be of Mars which Is of 7 years.

Years Month Days
Balance of Mahadasa Mars of Aries 7 00 00
(Less) expired period 3 6 00
3 6 00

In order to find of Kalachakara Dasa through the longitude of the Moon, the Tables-17 A to 18 B wouldbe of great help to work out the required Mahadasas.

Verse 94–95

94-95 : In Savya Chakra (Chart) , the first Amsa(अंश) is named as Deha (दिह) and last one as Jeeva (जीव) Reverse is the pattern for Apsavya Chakra (i.e. last one is called Deha while the firstone as Jeeva). The counting in respect of Savya chakra should commence from Deha etc. and for Apsavya from Jeeva and predictions are made accordingly.

**Different types of motions of the sign (राशी गति) :**

Verse 96–98

96-98: The ancient Sages have described three types of movements of the signs (राशी गती) in the Kalchakra Dasa system. There are known as Mandooki (मण्डूकी), Markati (मर्कटी) and Simhaviokan (सिंदवलोकन). Dasa-sign (Rasi) moving to next sign by leaping over asigniscalled Mandookimotion. A sign moving back tothe previous sign is known as Markati motion, The sign when jumps over the 5th or 9th sign (Trines) is termed as Simhaviokan motion.

There are indications of some other kinds of sign's movements in the standard works of other scholars, Some of these are; Punargamana (10 come again or re-appearence), Sarpa (snake), Kukkuta (cock) etc, Maharishi Parasara did not make any mention of these movements though they do have bearings over the important events of the native.

Verse 99–100

99-100: The motion of Virgo’s Dasa to Cancer and Dasaof Leo sign to Gemini are the Mandooka types of movements. The motionof the Dasa of Leo sign to Cancer is Markatimovement. The Jumping of Pisces over to Scorpio and from Sagittarius to Aries are Simhavlokana movements.

After a proper acquaintence of these three kinds of motions, prognostication through Kalachakra Dasa could be attempted.

In Savya Kalachakra, the Dasa of the signs Aries and Taurus (lords being Mars and Venus respectively) get repeated in the 3rd quarter of Aswini cluster of five Nakshatras (Table 17-A). Similarly, Scorpio and Libra signs are repeated (again Mars and Venus being the lords) In the 3rd quarter of the Bharani cluster of Nakshatras. (Table 17-B).

In the case of Apsavya Nakshatras also Mars and Venus planets are involved but only in tha 2nd quarters of the concerned Nakshatras. Here, there is recurrence of Aries and Taurus Dasas signs in the 2nd quarter of Mrigshira's cluster while in Rohani’s cluster Scorpio and Libra signs Dasas get re-emerged also in the 2nd quarter. (Table 18-A and 18-B).

These recurrence of Dasa signs in the same life-span sets in a kind of vacuum, gap or discontinuity in the natives life during the second visit of these Dasas. One gets altogether divergent results trom its previous Dasa period (of the sare sign).

For the Simhaviokana movement, this much explanation at this point of time would suffice though it is not considered as complete.

**Consequence of these motions (गती) during Dasas:**

Verse 106–108

106-108 : In the Apsavya cycle, Mandooka type of Movements will set in trouble to wife, children etc., possibility of fever and fall in status. Dasas of the signs in Markati motion produces; fear from water, loss of position, death of father, punishment from the authorities (Govt. etc.) and wandering in the forest be expected. In sign-Dasas with Simhaviokana motion in Apsavya cycle, service-loss or reduction in rank, death of father or near relation be considered.

i)In Mandooka, the native witl not be guilty. He does not do any irregular thing intentionally which could cause fall in the status. Generally, the rules and regulations bring about his. fall.

ii)In case of Markati-type of sign Dasas, some kind of irregularity or mistakes on the part of the native become the cause of his down fall. It is normally seen that during the distressed time, one does not get any support from the Influential people and the native has to perforce face the consequences as laid down in the Shlokas.

iii)However, in the Simhavlokana kind of sign-Dasa, the native miserably suffers due to his negligence and he is made responsible for his acts.

**Special effects of the Motions (गति) :**

109-411: The movement of the sign-Dasa fram Pisces to Scorpio signs will definitely cause fever to the native. Succession of Virgo Dasa by Cancer Dasa will bring destruction of the brothers and friends. Shifting to Gemini Dasa from Leo Dasa brings illness to the wife. Movement frorn Cancer Dasa to Leo Dasa will cause death to the native. When Sagittarius Dasa precedes to Aries Dasa, death of the brother or the father occurs. Onthe basis of the Dasas of the signs occupied by the malefic planets or benetic planets, the auspicious or inauspicious results be predicted during the currency of the said Dasa.

112-113: In the Kalachakra Dasa system, the favourable or unfavourable results be predicted on the basis of the sign of the Dasa. O learned Brahmin ! During the pericd of the ruling Dasa of the sign, the predictions be made through the medium of the directional movements of the said Dasa sign.

Verse 114–119

114-119 : If the movements is from Virgo Dasa to Cancer travelling towards easternly direction be favourable and journey towards North at that time will also be beneficial.

Travelling to eastern direction is prohibited during the movement of Leo Dasa to Gemini Dasa. The journey to south- western direction willhoweverbe fruitful and the native returns after accomplishing the task. When Cancer Dasa moves to Leo Dasa and if the native undertakes the journey, the mission will not be accomplished and he will have to proceed to west instead of south. On the movement of Pisces Dasa to Scorpio Dasa, trouble be felt in the Norther side. The movement of Sagittarius Dasato Capricorn Dasa undoubtedly creates obstacles in north direction. When Sagittarius Dasa jumps over to Aries Dasa, it denotes illness, imprisonment, death etc., during the journey.

O Brahmin ! When the Dasa of the Sagittarius sign retreats to Scorpio Dasa, the native is bestowed with comforts, fame, woman (marriage). During the period when Dasa of Leo moves back to Cancer Dasa, journey to west be avoided. The combinations (Yogas) of the benefic planets render favourable results while malefics combinations denote unfavourable results

Verse 120–122

120-122: According to the Kalachakra Dasa system, if the birth is in the Navamsa of Aries, the native will be brave but a thief. Ifthe birth be in the Taurus Navamsa, the native willbe wealthy and the Gemini Navamsa makes the native learned, The Cancer Navamsa’s birth, wil get him kingship. The native will be honoured by the king (authorities) if birth is in Leo Navamsa, If the birth bein the Navamsa of Virgo, the native becomes scholar. The birth in Libra Navamsa gets him ministership (a very high Government Position) while in Scorpio Navamsa makes him pauper. If birth is in Sagittarius Navamsa, the native willbe highly educated but birth in the Navamsa of Capricorn makes him commit sins. The native becomes businessman if born in the Aquarius Navamsa and if the birth be in the Pisces Navamsa, he becomes wealth.

In Apsavya group of Nakshatras, the distribution of Navamsa sign is altogether on a different footings. In this scheme, the natal Moon has no relevance. In Apsavya, the allotment cycle of the Navamsa-sign is in the reverse order commencing from Scorpio, Libra, Leo, Cancer, Gemini, Taurus, Aries ete.

There are twelve Navamsa-signs (the 12 zodiacal signs). As per the explanations rendered in respect of Savya and Apsavya Nakshatras and the distributions of the Navams-sign to their respective quarters (Padas), two tables are drawn i.e. Table-21 and Table-22 which will make the concept amply clear.

In Kalachakradasa system, the corresponding Navamsa-sign of the Mahadasa would discern the promise of the natal chart. With the change of ihe Dasa of the Navamsa-sign, the results will also get altered. For example: in the Mahadasa of Gemini, the Navamsa of Taurus which is akin to poisons, chemicats or death due to the reaction of medicine but these results will get changed the moment Gamini Navamsa Dasa becomes operative. The native in this period, wilt oe blessedwith happiness, festivities, comforts, alacrity, briskness, will get help in accomplishing his pursuits, gets facilities of physical and material comforts.

Verse 123–128

123-128 : If Deha and Jeeva signs are occupied by any of the planets, Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu death may be anticipated. If more than one of these planets are the occupant, the damages get beyond redemption (in otherwords the results will be disastrous). If Deha sign is afflicted by the malefic planets, disease will set in, and if Jeeva sign is tenanted by the maletics, sufferings through mental illness are predictable. Ifthe affliction is by the three malefic planets, early death will take place while if it is afflicted by the four maletic planets, the death is inevitable.

In case, both Deha and Jeeva signs are conjoined with the malefic planets, there will be lurking apprehension of persecution by the king (authorities), fear of theft, occurrence of death. If Deha or Jeeva signs are occupied by the Sun, tear from fire: if by the waning Moon, fear of drowning; if by Mars, injury from weapons; Mercury's occupation in these signs causes inflammatory diseases and Saturn's afflictions produces disease related to spleen. Rahu and Ketu it posited in the Deha or Jeeva will indicate fear of being poisoned.

In case, Deha or Jeeva signs are conjoined with Mercury, Jupiter or Venus (the benefic planets), these planets will afford comforts, good fortune, happiness etc. to the native and also redemption trom disease and sorrows. The occupation of mixed planets in Deha or Jeeva sign i.e. both benefic and malefic planets, mixture of good and bad events be anticipated.

Verse 129–130

129-130 : During the Dasa period of the Deha and Jeeva signs having lordship of malefic planets, the native remains in distress and discomforts. The Dasa-sign of the benefic planets, undoubtedly, will be auspicious. If malefic Dasa-sign is posited with a benefic planet or benefic Dasa-sign is conjunct with malefic planet, mixed results be expected.

Verse 155–156

155-156 : The methad of calculating Chara Dasa : Now | explain the Chara Dasas from the Ascendant to the 12th house. inthis Dasa system, the number of signs fromthe sign of the house upto the lord of the sign will denote the number of years of the Dasa ofthe said sign, Three signs put together in succession from Aries constitute one quarter (Pada). In order to ascertain the period (years) of Chara Dasa, the counting of the signs of odd quarters (1,3) be done in forward order, while for signs of even quarters (2, 4) it should be in the reverse order.

Maharishi Jaimini in Chapter 2, Part 3 and Shioka 29 of in his famous aphorism, has given his advise on the following lines. There will be forward counting for the signs of the odd quarters. That is, in respect of Aries sign, the counting willbe Aries, Taurus, Gemini and upto the lord of Aries (i.e. Mars). The farther is the position of Mars from Aries sign, the longer will be the period of the Chara Dasa of this sign. In case of Cancer sign, whichis in the even quarter, the counting would be in the reverse order and restricted upto its lord viz., the Moon. The scheme of counting will be Cancer, Gemini, Taurus, till it reaches the position of the Moon in the natal chart.

Verse 158–166

158-166 : Now I explain how to decide the Dasa-years of the signs having the dual lordship. O Brahmin! If both the lords are conjunct and located in their own signs, 12 years be assigned, otherwise Dasa-years be ascertained on the basis of single lord- ship. Incase, one lord is in its own sign and other one is ina different sign, the counting of years be restricted upto the latter one (if the lords are posited in different signs). in the event of both the lords being located in different signs, O-Brahmin, the forward or reverse counting should be in respect of the planet which is stronger. The concept of relative strength over here means that the lord which is accompanying a planet is stronger than the one without it. If both have equal number of planets, the decision will rest on the basis of the strength of the signs. The sequence is that the fixed sign from the movable sign and the dual sign from the fixed sign is more powerful. If the signs also be of the same type, the sign rendering higher number of years be considered for Chara Dasa. Here, if one planet is in the exaltation sign and the other one is contributing higher number of years, the former (the one of exaltation sign) be considered. Besides, one year be added for the planet in the exallation and one yearbe deducted if it is in the state of debilitation.

The results of the Chara Dasa be analysed after due deliberation on these lines.

i)If both the lords of the sign are located in the sign owned by them (i.e. Scorpio containing Mars and Ketu and Aquarius having Saturn and Rahu init) the period of the sign be record as 12 years.

ii)If one planet is in his own sign and the other one is else where, the counting be done upto the planet posited in the other sign.

iii)Incase bath the planets are indifferent signs, the counting should proceed upto the planet, stronger of the two. The method forthe identification of the stronger planet has also been enunciated by Maharishi in his aphorismto set rightthe imbrogilo in this process. According to maxim, the planet which is conjoined with other planets is considered stronger than the one without it. If both the lords of the sign are having company of the planets, the planet with more planets will be stronger. Finally, it the number of the conjunct planets with the lords also happens to be the same, the comparative strength of these signs holding these lords will solve this entanglement.

iv)The strength of the signs is reckoned on the basis of the nature of the sign (viz., movable, fixed or dual). Fixed sign from movable and dual sign trom fixed sign is considered powerful.

v)Here again it both happen to be the signs of the same nature, the sign accommodating the lord contributing more number of years in the Dasa, should be reckoned.

vi)In a situation where amongst the two sign-lords, one is exalted arid the other is not, then the exalted planet will have priorily over the other inspite of the fact, the second planet is contributing more numberof years in the Dasa. Sequel to this is thai the Dasa of exaited planet will have one added year while the Dasa of the debilitated planet is deprived of by one year.

Some of the eminent Astrologers are of the view that one should not resort to addition or substraction on account of sign getting exalted or debilitated respectively. Through sustained applications of this maxim, they observed that unaltered Dasa years do give the desired results. It is tound that Jupiter when posited in Capricorn, the Dasa of the Sagittarius sign becomes void (1 - 1 = 0) with the substraction of one year due to Jupiter being in debilitation, Simitarly, if Mercury is housed in Virgo, the Dasa of Virgo sign shows 13 years (12 + 1) which does not fitin the schame. These cited anomalies leave enough scope for the scholars and students of the astrology alike to ponder over this dilemma and form there own opinion on this issue.

क्रमादुत्क्रमतो वाऽपि घर्मभावपदक्रमात्‌ ! ।
लग्नणशिं समारभ्य विज्ञश्‍चरदशां नयेत्‌ ॥ १६७ ॥

Verse 167

167: Depending upon the sign of the 9th house being in the odd or even group, the Dasa of the sign is fixed by counting in forward or reverse order respectively from the Ascendant.

Example : 9

Let us take a horoscope of Aries Ascendant.

Diagram from BPHS chapter 48
Diagram from the source text, BPHS chapter 48.

The 9th house is of Sagittarius sign and it is in odd group. Therefore, the Dasa will be serialed from Aries (Ascendant) in the forward order. Mars is the lord of Aries and posited in Leo and with forward counting, it comes to 5. The number of yaarsin Dasa willbe 4 (5-1) because counting is to begin from the sign next to it; to know the period between these two signs.

The next Dasa willbe of that of Taurus sign and the lord of Taurus is posited in the 10th house (Capricorn). The count from Taurus to Capricorn is 9. The number of years in Taurus Dasa will be (9-1) 8 years. in the same manner, the Dasa ot the other signs in the group viz. Gemini will be worked out taking into consideration the placement of their lords. The counting of the three signs succeeding Gemini will be in the reverse order because these signs beiong to even group.

In the illustrated horoscope, the lord of Cancer, the Moon is in Aries and counting will be 4, 3, 2, 1 order and comesio 4, The Chara Dasa of Cancer will be of 3 years (4-1), The Dasa is of Leo whose Jord, the Sun is in his own sign. in such a situation the counting is to begin trom Leo in reverse fashion and also Leo. The number comes to 13. Therefore, the Chara Dasa of Leo being of 12 years (13-1). tn the event of lord is posited in his own sign, 12 years will be attributed to that sign whether counting is forward or backward,

Example : 10

Let us take the standard horoscope with Capricorn Ascendant.

The Sth house from Ascendant is Virgo which is a sign of even group and therefore, the sequence of the Chara Dasa will be in the reverse fashion. That is, the first Dasa will be of Capricorn followed by Sagittarius, Scorpio etc.

Diagram from BPHS chapter 48
Diagram from the source text, BPHS chapter 48.

The lord of Capricorn, Saturnis in Virgo and this in an even group and counting from Capricorn to Saturn will be in reverse order. It comes to 4 years (5-1). The Chara Dasa of Sagittarius is of 3 years because Jupiter is four signs away In torward order, as Sagittarius being of odd group. The Scorpio sign is of odd group and thus forward counting. Amongst both the orders of Scorpio, Mars Is more strong as Mars has company of two more planets, while Ketu is sitting alone. There countfrom Scropio to Mars is 7 and hence, Scorpio will have 6 years of Chara Dasa. The Chara Dasas of the other signs have also been worked out and are presented in tabular form vide table-24.

TABLE - 24

Sign Dasa Year Sign Dasa Years Sign Dasa Year
Capricorn 4 Virgo 4 Taurus 2
Sagittarius 3 Leo 3 Aries 1
Scorpio 6 Cancer 3 Pisces 1
Libra 9 Gemini 11 Aquarius 12

The Dasas of the signs are not static in Chara Dasa system. This Dasa is entirely personal to the native's chart because the position of Ascendant and the disposition of the planetsin the horoscope lend clue for the erection ofthe Dasa chart. For this very reason, it is called Chara Dasa.

Some astrological savants work out the Chara Dasa Chart in a different manner. in the example, the Ascendant's Longitude in Capricorn is 19°-4'-24”and the longitude of Saturn (lord) in Virgo is 3°-16'-14". The Ascendant is of even sign. Hence the counting will be in a reverse order, The difference between these two longitudes comes to :

Sign Deg. Mts. Sec.
9 19 04 42
(-) 5 03 16 14
4 15 48 29

The longitudinal differance is 4 signs passed 15°-48'-29", Hence, the Dasa will be 4 years plus some months and days in proportion to the degrees consumed in the current sign, Since there are 30 degrees in a sign and 12 months in a year, this vatue Is divided by 30 and multiplied by 12. The quotient will denote the number of months. Again, the remainder is multiplied by 30 fone month = 30days) to get number of days.

15°-48'-29" = 15.80° » 30 = 0.5267 × 12 = 6.32
= 6 months + 0.32
0.32 × 30 = 9.6 (say todays.)

Therefore, the Dasa = 4 years 6 months 10 days of the Capricorn.

Next Dasa will be of Sagittarius sign. The longitude of the 12th house of Sagittarius is 8s-23°-57'-48" and the longitude of Jupiter is 11s- 16°-19'-23". Since forward counting will be there the longitude of 12th house is to be subsiracted from Jupiter’s longitude.

Sign Deg. Mts. Sec.
11 16 19 23
(-) 08 23 57 48
02 22 21 35

2 yrs + 22° - 21' - 35" = 2 yrs. + 22.3597 deg.

= 22.3597 » 30 × 12 = 6.94

= 8 months + 0.94

= 0.94 × 30 = 28.2 = 28 days.

The Sagittarius Dasa is of 2 years 8 months, 28 days. The Dasas of the rest of the signs could also be worked out in the same manner. Since here tha Dasas are calculated upto days (one can go upto hrs. and minutes), thare is bound to be some variation in the Precise result with method laid down in the text whare the Dasa is limited to years only. Like, Table-24 indicates Dasa ot Capricom as 4 years while in is method ft comes 4yrs 6 month or so. Butthe Sagittarius Dasainthis method Is short by about three months. in this way, it gets compensated automatically,

The opinion of some other astrological scholars is expressed in the following shloka.

**तस्मात्‌ तदीशपर्यन्तं संख्यामत्र दशां बिन्दुः**

It deciphers like this; from the logitudinal difference of Dasa sign andits lord, the years of the Dasa will be denoted by the resultant sign, months, days ete. be ascertained in decifraction i.e. to express in propor- tionto the fraction ofthe sign. However, the dictum ofthe ancient scholars, to find Dasa years by counting from sign to the lard of the sign is ever since being followed.

168-169 : Maharishi Parasara said : O Brahmin! Now I divulge Sthira type of Dasa. The movable signs are ascribed 7 years, fixed signs 8 years and dual signs 9 years of Dasas. Since the Dasa years are of fixed nature, this systemis called Sthira Dasa system. The sequence of twelve sign Dasas commences from Brahma-Graha Sign. The order of counting for odd signs is forward and for even signs is backward

Verse 171–173

171-173 : Maharishi Parasara replied; “The strongest lord amongst 6th, 8th or 12th house reckoned from the Ascendant or 7th house (the house holding more strength) and posited in an odd sign and also located within 6 signs from the Ascendant or 7th house (the one being considered) is called Brahma-Graha. The lord of the 8th house from Karaka (Atmakarka) and posited in 8th house is also taken as Bramha. Amongst the Saturn, Rahu or Ketu which ever is being picked up as Brahma-Graha and 6th lord there from is also called Brahma. If more than one planets is getting approved as Bramha, the one with greater longitude be reckoned as Bramha- Graha. in the event of longitude being identical, the stronger one be considered.

Forthe nomination of the Brahama-Graha first of all, the stronger house between the Ascendant and 7th house is to ba decided. There are different basis for the identification of the strength of the house. These are as follows :-

i)The house wilh a planet in tt, Is stronger than the house without it.

ii)both the houses have the planets, the higher numerical number will decide the issue.

iii)Suppose, if both the houses are Posited with the equal number of planets, any house with an exalted planet becomes powerful.

iv)If both the houses are devoid of planets, the position of the lord of the house in respect to their exaltation point be the deciding factor.

v)Even after this much exercise, if both the planets turn out to be holding equal strength, the planet with the higher degree of longitude be considered as stronger.

vi)Suppose, even then, the Parity amongst the contesting planets exist, the following steps may necessarily be taken for a split decision :

a)Between these two odd signs, the lord of the one which is in the even sign is considerd stronger,

b)Like wise, amongstthase even sign, the sign having its lord in the add sign, becomes stronger.

vi)Inspite of all this painstaking analysis, the dead lock still persists, the criterion of natural strength of the planet may be adopted. (The natural strength of Saturn is less than Mars. The stronger to Mars is Mercury then Jupiter, Venus, the Moon and the Sun is the stongest among all).

Alter the selection of the house whether the Ascendant or 7th. house, the strength of the lords of the 6th, 8th and 12th houses therefrom is also to be decided. The strength of these lords is measured with reference to their respective exaltation points. If more than one planets turn out in this process, the one with the higher longitude should be picked up. Suppose if their longitudes are also the same which is a rarest possibility, the natural strength of the planet shall decide the issue.

Let us suppose that the Ascendant proves to be stronger than the 7th housein a natural horoscope then the most powertul lord amongst the lords of 6th, 8th and 12th houses from the Ascendant which ever is ihe strongest and located in 12th, 11th, 10th, 9th, 8th or 7th house and also in an odd sign is nominated as Bramha-Graha.

In case 7th house becomes the stronger one, then the most powerfullord ofthe 6th, 8th or 12th house from the 7th house (i.e. 3rd, 12th or 8th) if posited in the odd sign and in any of the houses 6th, 5th, 4th, 3rd, 2nd or ist, will become Bramha-Graha.

Example - 11 :

Diagram from BPHS chapter 48
Diagram from the source text, BPHS chapter 48.

There is no planet in the Ascendant but the 7th house has one planetin it. Therefore, the 7th house becomes stronger than the Ascen- dant. Amongst the lords of 6th, 8th and 12th house from 7th viz., Jupiter, Jupiter and Sun. Jupiter is posited in the 3rd house but in Pisces sign which is an even sign. Hence Jupiter cannot be considered as Bramha-Graha.

Now the position is got to be analysed from the 8th house from the Atmakarka viz., the Moon. Mars is the lord of the 8th house from the Moon (i.e. 11th house). Since 8th house is devoid of any planet, Mars can be taken as Brahma. Mars is located in the Taurus which is an even sign. Therefore, the Dasacyclewill commence inreverse fashion. The tirst Dasa Taurus will be followed by the of Aries, Pisces, Aquarius sign-Dasas and so on.

Verse 174

174 : Half the sum total periods of Chara and Sthira Dasas constitute the span of Yogardha Dasa. The Dasas of the twelve signs are commenced from the Ascendant or 7th house whichever is the stronger and with the forward counting for the odd signs and backward counting for the even signs.

whichever is assessed more powerful! in the birth chart. In the illustrative birth chart, as under, the 7th house is stronger then the Ascendant because the 7th house contains one planet while the Ascen- dant is devoid of any planet (This phenomena has been) fully explained while dealing with the Sthir Dasa. Applying the rules laid down for Chara and Sthir Dasas, the Chara Dasa of Cancer sign has 3 years and the Sthir Dasa has7 years. Therefore, Yogardha Dasa of Cancer works out 3 + 7 + 2 = 5 years. Cancer sign is the even sign and as such the 12 Dasa signs will be taken in the reverse order.

Verse 175–176

175-176 : From the Ascendant or 7th house whichever is stronger, the Dasa of the signs of Angles (Kendra) etc., in their relative strength order are reckoned. [If the sign of the Ascendant or 7th house (what ever will be the case) is ocd, the sequence of the Dasas will be in progression and if it is an even sign, the 08585 sequence will be ina reverse manner forthe signs locatedin Kendra (Angles), Panapharas (Succedent), Apoklimas (Cadent) houses. The Dasa order will be in accordance to the comparative strength of the sign.] in the same manner, the Dasa of the signs and planets be considered from Atmakarka also. The scheme of fixing the span of Dasa in Chara Dasa system as weil be adopted in this case. The Dasa period (years) of the planets is ascertained through counting upto their respective signs.

The same principle is adopted in the combination of Atmakaraka and the 7th house. The stronger one will take the lead and Dasa cycle is drawn in the similar fashion.

This Dasa is of two kinds (i) Kendradi Dasa (iI) Karka-Kendraci Dasa. Eveninthis, some kind of ditfarence exists between Kendradi-Sign Dasa and Kendra-Planet Dasa. Appropos procedure relates to Kendra sign Dasa. The pattern of Kendra-Planat Dasais also near about the same as planets instead of signs are taken into consideration over here. For fixing the period (years) of the Dasas, Maharishi Parasara described it by saying “दशाब्दाश्चरवज्हेयाः” which means that the Dasa period (years) be identical to Chara Dasa years.

Example : 13

Diagram from BPHS chapter 48
Diagram from the source text, BPHS chapter 48.

In the illustrated horoscope, the 7th house is stronger than the Ascendant (for logic, please see example 11). Consequently, the serial of Dasas will begin from the 7th house and in reverse order, as the 7th sign is even sign. In that order, the first Angle sign is Aries then Capricorn and lastly Libra sign. Since, 7th lord Moon is located in Aries, the Dasa will commence from Aries. Between Capricorn and Libra signs, the Dasa of the sign will come next whose lord has higher longitude.

The signs of the Panaphara houses from the 7th house are (in severse arder) Gemini, Pisces, Sagittarius and Virgo. The Dasas of these signs will be serlaled on the basis of these comparative strength. It comes to Pisces, Virgo, Sagittarius and Gemini. The sign Dasas of the Apoklima houses with respect to the 7th house are Taurus, Aquarius, Scorpio and Leo and in the sequence of Taurus, Aquarius, Leo, Scoprio Dasas.

The total number of years in respect of each Dasa shoutd be determined on the basis of Chara Dasa system. The Cancer sign being of even group, the total years will be 3 (4-1) i.e. by counting in the reverse _ order from the 7th house to the sign in which the 7th lord Moon is posited. Similarly, the Dasa periods (years) of the other signs may be determined.

In the same manner, amongst Atmakarka, the Moon, lord of Aries and the 7th sign, the Aries sign is more powerful. This is an odd sign, hance, the Dasa will start from Aries sign itself. Thereafter, the Dasas of the signs of Kendra, Panaphara and Apoklima houses be determined.

Karaka-Kendradi Graha (Planet) Dasa :

Atmakaraka Moon is posited in Aries sign which is an odd sign. Therefore, forward sequence will start from Aries in the context of Kendra, Panaphara and Apoklima houses and the Dasas of the planets located in these houses will follow the sequence depending upon their comparative strength.

Like, the Moon is in Aries, hence first Dasa will be that of the Moon and next planet in Angle from Aries, is only Venus and the Dasa of Venus will come next. The planets located in the Panaphara houses from the Moon (in the direct order) are Sun, Mercury, Mars, Ketu and Rahu. Since first three planets are together, the determination of three order will be on the longitudinal basis and the sequence will be Sun, Mars and Mercury. This will be followed by Ketu and Rahu Dasas.

The planets in Apoklima house from the Moon are only Saturn and Jupiter. On the basis of their strength, Jupiter comes first succeeded by Saturn.

The span of the Dasas of these planets is equal to the number (in terms of years) between the planets and their respective signs. Hence, the Dasa-span of Moon is 3 (4-1) years when counted in the reverse order upto Cancer (even sign). On the same lines, the Dasa-span in respect of planets may be measured. However, the sequence of the Dasas will remain the same.

As stated earlier, in the determination of the Dasa ofa planet, the counting should always commence from the planet to its respective sign. However, some astrological scholars are of the opinion that the counting should be from the sign to its planet (lords). This concept does not seem to hold water because the exposition of Kendradi-Dasa over here is purely in context with the maxim of Maharishi Parasara which is at variance with the Jaimini's aphorism.

Verse 177

177 : The counting of the Dasa period (years) in respect of planets having lordship over two signs should be done upto both the signs and which ever sign attributes longer period shall be reckoned as the Dasa-span of the planet.

Verse 178

178 : Karaka Dasa commences from Atmakaraka and has the same sequence as that of the Karakas (eight Karakas). In this Dasa system, the span of each Dasa is equal the number (years) between the Ascendant and the respective Karaka.

Picking up the horoscopical details from Chapter 34, the contents of Shloka 178 ibid are elucidated, in ihe next example.

Longitudes of the planets (ignoring the sign)

Deg. Mts. Sec.
Ascendant 19 4 42
Sun 18 8 22

Mars 14 28 7
Mercury 1 5 7
Jupiter 16 19 53
Venus 2 39 37
Saturn 3 16 14
Rahu 23 35 22

The sequence of Karakas will start from Atma Karaka i.e. the planet who is having highest degree of the longitude (ignoring the sign) and other Karakas will follow in the receding order. The Karakas-order in this example is as follows:-

Sr. No. Karaka Planet
1. Atma Karaka Moon
2. Amatya Karaka Sun
3. Bhratri Karaka Jupiter
4. Matri Karaka Mars
5. Pitri Karaka Rahu
6. Putra Karaka Saturn
7. Gnati Karaka Venus
8. Stree (Dara) Karaka Mercury

The Atma Karaka is the Moon, who is posited in the 4th house. The Moon is 4th from the Ascendant and the difference In between the Ascendant andthe Moon is 3 years. Hence, the Dasa of the Atma Karaka willbe of 3 years duration. In the same manner, the Dasa-span of the other Karakas be calculated. It may, however, be noted that whenever any planetis located in the Ascendant itself, the Dasa years of the corresponding Karaka of such planet will be reckoned as 12 years because the count from Ascendant to Ascendant is 13 andthe difference inbetween would be of 12 years.

Verse 179–180

179-180 : O Brahmin! The ancient Astrologers used the name of Trikoota Dasa for Mandooka Dasa. Dasa in this system, emanates from the strongest amongst the Ascendant and the 7th house and sequence of the Dasas is in the forward or in the reverse order depending upon the sign being of odd or even nature. The period (years) of the Dasa are in line with the Sthira Dasa system (i.e., for movable signs-7 years, fixed signs 8 years and for dual signs 9 years). In this Dasa scheme, the counting pattern is to relinquish two signs in between every time (i.e. Jumping over two signs) and for this very reason it is called Mandooka Dasa.

Maharishi Parasara has attributed 7 yrs; 8 yrs; and 9 yrs; to Movable. Fixed and Dual signs respectively while Rishi Jaimini reckoned 9 years identically for all the signs.

Verse 181–182

181-182 : Some astrological Savants consider Shoola Dasa for ascertaining the timing of death. The eighth house fromthe Ascendant or the 7th house i.e. the 2nd house, which ever is stronger will lead the Dasa order into motion. The sequence of the twelve signs will be in the forward or in the reverse order depending upon the leading sign being odd or even. The Dasas years are identical to those in the Sthira Dasa system. Death possibly occurs in the Dasa of strong Capricorn sign.

183-184; Trikona Dasa emanates from the Ascendant or from of the Trinal houses (5th or 9th) which ever is the stronger one and is like Chara Dasa. Forward count for odd and reverse count for the even sign, be adopted. The Dasa years equals to the difference of the number of signs between the concernd Trinal house to the lord of its sign. This Dasa-system since confined tothe Trinal houses (1,5,9) it is called Trikona-Dasa system.

In this horoscope amongst the Ascendant, 5th and Sth houses, the 5th house is the strongest one as it has three planets. The sign of Sth house is Taurus which is an even sign and as such there willbe a reverse count. The sequence of the sign (Dasa) will be in the order of Taurus, Capricorn, Virgo and then the next set of the signs are Aries, Sagittarius, Leo and the 3rd set constitutes Pisces, Scorpio and Cancer signs andthe last set will be of Aquarius, Libra and Gemini signs. In the same manner, the Dasa years of the signs be ascertained.

Verse 185–187

185-187 : First, the 9th sign from the Ascendant, and then signs aspected by the 9th sign followed by the 10th sign and the signs aspected by 10th sign and thereafter 11th sign, the signs aspected by the 11th sign are the Dasas of the signs under Driga Dasa system. The sequence of the Dasa are decided on the basis of aspects and that is why it is called Driga-Dasa system.

The signs 9th, 10th, 11th from the Ascendant are respectively movable, fixed and dual. In the event of movable signs the count toward aspected signs be forward and in that of fixed signs, the counting upto the aspected sign be in the reverse order. Incase of dual sign, if it is odd sign, forward counting and even sign backward counting, upto the aspected signs be resorted to.

The subject of the aspects etc., has already been dealt with in Chapter- 9 in volume 1. However, for quick recapitulation, the same is being briefly exaplained over here.

i)The movable signs, aspects all the fixed signs skipping sign next to it.

ii)The fixed signs, ignoring adjacent movable sign (in 12th house), aspects all the movable signs.

iii)The dual sign, leaving aside itself aspects all the dual signs

The 9th, 10th or 11th house if contains movable sign, the forwarding counting be undertaken and in case of fixed sign backward Counting be adopted. in respect of dual signs, the even sign prompts onwards and the odd one reverse counting. in the process, as many signs so emerged, will be included into the Drig-Dasa cycle of the native.

Inthe standard horoscope, the 9thhouse fromthe Ascendant has Virgo sign which is a dua! sign and also an even sign. Therefore, raverse counting be resorted to. Fram Virgo the other dual signs Gemini, Pisces and Sagittarius are under the aspect.

Diagram from BPHS chapter 48

The 10th house has Libra sign which is a movable sign hence forward counting. The aspected signs areLeo, Taurus, Aquarius. Likewise, the 11th house is having fixed sign in it, hence reverse counting. The signs under aspects are Capricorn, Aries, Cancer in that order, Here also, the Dasa period (years) will be in accordance to Sthir Dasa system.

Verse 188–189

188-189 : Every Nakshatra consists of Dasas of 12 signs including the Ascendant in Lagnadi-Rasi Dasa system. Multiply Bhayaata at birth by 12 and divide it by the Bhabhoga and the remainder sign degree etc., be added to the Ascendant’s longitude and the sum be divided by 12 and Rasi-Dasa is thus obtained. The Dasa sequence will commence there from upto the 12 signs. For odd sign forward and for even sign reverse counting will be resorted to.

Example : 15

The Bhagaata of the birth Nakshatra Kritika is 0 Ghati, 36 Palas, 20 Vipalas (432 Pallas) [Vipala be ignored as being inconsequential] and Bhaghoga 65 Gh. 22 Pal. (3922 Pal.)

Bhayaata + Bhabhoga = 432 Pal. + 3922 Pal.

Bhayaata + Bhabhoga = 0 3 18 16
Long. of Ascendant = 9 19 4 42
Expired period = 9 22 22 53

[It the sum of the signs is more the 12 signs, dispense with 12 signs and balance signs be reckoned]. In the instant case, the resultant sign is lass than 12 signs and henca Capricorn Dasa will be the first Dasa and the sequence of the Dasaswillbe in the reverse order (Capricorn being even sign). The period (years) of the Dasa will be inline with the SthiraDasa system,

190 : The expired longitude of the Dasa (so obtained) be multiplied by the total year of the said Dasa and then divided by 30. The product will indicate the expired period. By deducting the Product from Dasa (years), the balance of Dasa be obtained.

The expired longitude of Capricorn = 22°-22'-58" = 22°.38
Dasa period of Capricorn = 7 years
The expired period = 22.38 × 7 = 5.222
30
= 5.222 = 5 years + 0.222
= 0.222 × 12 = 2 months + 0.664
= 0.664 × 30 = 20 days
= 5 years, 2 months, 20 days.

Verse 195–199

195-199 : Maharsh Parasara said; O learned Savant, I have already described Varana Dasa, now | explain to you Yogini Dasa an enunciated be Lord Mahadeva. There are eight Yogini Dasas viz., 1. Mangla, 2. Pingala, 3. Dhanya, 4. Bhramari, 5. Bhadrika 6. Uika, 7. Sidha and 8. Sankata. The Moon, the Sun, Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, Saturn, Venus, Rahu have been evolved from Mangla, Pingla, Dhanya, Bharamari, Bhadrika, Ulka, Sidha, Sankata respectively. Add 3 in the birth Nakshatra and divide it by 8. The remainder represents Yogini Dasa, in sequence commencing from Mangla Dasa, operating at the time of the birth. The Dasa years is in the seriatim of the natural Dasa order of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 years. From Bhayaata, Bhabhoga, the expired period and bal- ance Dasa at the time of the birth be calculated.

Example - 16

The birth Nakshatra being reckoned for the illustration purposes, is Kritika which is the 3rd Nakshatra in the series of Nakshatras. By adding 3 in it, we get sum of 6. The division by 8 will leave the remainder 6 again. The 6th Yogini Dasa in its natural orderis of ‘Uika' which will be the starting Dasa of the native. In the manner, the expired and balance Dasa arrived atin the Vimshottari Dasa system, in same way in Yogini Dasa also, these - periods are worked out through the Bhayaata and Bhabhoga of the birth Nakshatra. The formula is as follows:-

= Bhagaata × Dasa years
Bhabhoga

The data of the exampled horoscope, indicate Bhayaata 0 Gh,, 36 Pal; 20 Vipal. (2180 Vipal) and Bhabhoga 65 Gh., 22 Pal; (235320 Vipal). The period of Ulka Dasais 6 years. Hence the expired periadcomes to:

2180 × 6 = 0.0556 = 0 year + 0.0556
235320
0.556 × 12 = 0.6672 = 0 month + 0.6672
0.6672 × 30 = 20.016 = 20 days. (Day)
= 0 year, 0 month, 20 days.

The balance of Dasa of Utka is :-

Year Month Day
Total Dasa years 6 0 0
Less expired period 0 0 20
5 11 10

= 5 years, 11 months, 10 days.

The natural Sandhya Dasa is of 10 years duration. If we multiply it by 6 and then divide it by 31, the resultant will be 1 yr.-11 months-6 days. This period be kept in the first column. Half of this value, turns out to be 0yr. 11 months, 18 days and this figure will go in the next three columes, The next 8 coloumns will carry the figure equivalent to 1/Srd of the resultant value i.e. 0 yr. 7 months 22 days. Commencing from the strongest planet amongst the planets tenanted in the Angles, the sequence of Janma, Sampat, Vipat, Kshema, Pratyak, Sadhana, Naidhara, Mitra and Param- Mitra Dasas are adopted. O Vipra ! The effect of Tara Dasas will be in accordance to their nomenciature. This Dasa system will be applicable only to those nativities where the planets are posited in the Angles. In the event of more than one planets in the Angles, the commencement of Dasa sequence will be from the strongest amongst them.
