77. CHARACTERISTICS OF PANCHAMAHAPURUSHA

अथ वक्ष्याम्यहं पञ्च-महापुरुषलक्षणम्‌ ।
स्वभोच्चगतकेन्द्रस्थैर्बलिभिष्च कुजादिभिः ॥ १ ॥

क्रमशो रुचको भद्रो हंसो मालव्य एव च ।
शशश्चैते बुधैः सर्वैर्महान्तः पुरुषाः स्मृताः ॥ २ ॥

1-2 : Sage Parasara said : Now I define the characteristics of Panchamahapurusha. If powerful and dignified Mars etc. planets being in their own or exaltation signs, are posited in the Angular houses, it will give rise to Ruchaka, Bhadra, Hamsa, Malavya and Sasa kinds of Mahapurusha Yogas. Inother words, the natives born in these Yogas are characterised as Mahapurushas.

दीर्घाननो महोत्साहो स्वच्छकान्तिर्महाबलः ।
चारुभ्रूर्नीलकेशश्च सुरुचिश्च रणप्रियः ॥ ३ ॥

रक्तश्यामोऽरिहन्ता च मन्त्रविच्चोरनायकः ।
क्रूरो भर्ता मनुष्याणां क्षामाऽङ्ध्रिर्दिजपूजकः ॥ ४ ॥

वीणावज्रधनुःपाशवृषचक्रां कितः करे ।
मन्त्राभिचारकुशली दैर्घ्ये चैव शतांगुलः ॥ ५॥

मुखदैर्ध्यसमं मध्यं तस्य विज्ञैः प्रकीर्तितम्‌ ॥
तुल्यस्तुलासहस्रेण रुचको द्विजपुंगव ! ॥ ६ ॥

भुनक्ति विन्ध्यसह्याद्रिप्रदेशं सप्ततिं समाः ।
शस्त्रेण वहिना वाऽपि स प्रयाति सुरालयम्‌ ॥ ७ ॥

3-7: Features of Ruchaka Yoga :Apersonbornin Ruchaka Yoga will have longish face, over zealous, radiant but polite, extremely powerful, beautiful eye brows, black hair, refined tastes, fond of battle fields, dark red complexion, conqueror, intelligent, head of the thieves, cruel temperament, slender thighs, devout of Brahamins, holding ‘Veena’, ‘Yagra’, ‘Dhanush’, ‘Pasha’and ‘Vrishabha’ sign in his hands and having "Chakra-Rekha": well versed in incantation, occultism and employing the spells with malevolent purpose, having the height of hundred ‘Angulas’ with equal proportion of length of the face and the waist, equal to one thousand "Tulas (तुला)", ruler of Vindya and Sahasya Pradesh and will attain Swarga (heavens) at the age of 70 years and will die by weapon or fire.

Infact, Sage Parasara has greatly generalised the results of this Yoga and if we deeply Study these effects, we will notice some amount of contradiction. In Aries and Capricorn Ascendants, the described results would be more prominent in the native. Suppose Mars is posited in Capricorn sign in Aries Ascendant, the Mars apart from being in the sign of exaltation, it will acquire the directional Strength and will cause direct 4th aspect on the Ascendant. In such a situation, it will gain abundant strength in bringing an equilibrium between mind and temperament.

The position of Mars in the Ascendant of Capricorn is also considered quite powerful and the only difference would be that it willlose half the potency of directional strength. Here again the Ascendant (self) and 4th house (mind) would be under the influence of Mars especially so when Mars owns the 4th house. This birth chart pertains to one I.A.S. Officer (Indian Administrative Service). Mars is exalted in an Angular house forming Ruchaka Yoga. This native has got longish face with dark red complexion, stout body, hot temperament but the position of the Moon and Mercury in the Ascendant protects him from being cruel. Having born in an elite family, he possesses literary and high class interests. He has special regards for Brahmins and is the follower of occultism. He was twice awarded for his meticulous planning and execution of the operations against antisocial elements.

It has been our experience that the conjunction of the Moon and Mercury with Mars generally bring salutary effects on otherwise an aggressive Mars and keeps the native's hot temperament under check. The combination also gives rise to refined and artistic hobbies. In this chart Venus being the lord of the 5th and the 10th houses, is posited in the 3rd house. Since this house signifies the hands, the native developed interests in paintings, drawing etc. In connection with Ruchaka Yoga, it is also felt that the wife of the native will also have the same temperament that of the native.

The expression Tula (तुला) used in shlokas 3-7 is an ancient connotation of measuring units of the weight. The weight of the present coin of one Rupee is equal to one Karsha (कर्ष). Four Karshas make one Pala (पल) and Three hundred Palas form one Tula (तुला).

शार्दूलप्रतिभः पीनवक्षा गजगतिः पुमान् ।
पीनाजानुभुजः प्राज्ञश्चतुरस्रश्च योगवित् ॥ ८ ॥

सात्त्विक: शोभनांघ्रश्च शोभनश्मश्रुसंयुतः ।
कामी शंखगदाचक्रशर कुञ्जरचिहकैः ॥ ९ ॥

ध्वजलांगलचिद्वैश्च चिहितांघ्रिकराम्बुजः ।
सुनसशास्त्रविद् धीर: कृष्णाकुञ्चितकेशभृत् ॥ १० ॥

स्वतन्त्रः सर्वकार्येषु स्वजनप्रीणनक्षमः ।
ऐश्वर्यं भुज्यते चास्य नित्यं मित्रजनैः परैः ॥ ११ ॥

तुलया तुलितो भारप्रमितः स्त्रीसुतान्वितः ।
सक्षेमो भूपतिः पाति मध्यदेशं शतं समाः ॥ १२ ॥

8-12: Features of Bhadra Yoga The native of Bhadra is imbued with the lion like radiance, well developed (muscular) chest with gait of elephant, long and muscular arms (thick), learned,. intelligent and skilled in Yogas, Satwaguni (सत्वगुर्णा), elegant feet, pretty moustaches and beard and lustful. Having the marks of conch (शंख), Chakra, Gada (गदा), arrow elephant, flag (ध्वजा) and plough (हल) on his feet and hands. Possesses lovely nose, expert in weaponary, adorns black and curly hairs, having an independant nature but is the protector of the family. Shares his luxuries and enjoyments with his friends, heavy weight (20 Tulas), Spends happy and comfortable life with his wife and children and as a ruler of Madhya Pradesh, he lives for hundred years.

The formation of Bhadra Yoga is restricted to Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces Ascendants. In all these four Ascendants for giving rise to Bhadra Yoga, there would have maximum eight possibilities i.e. two in each Ascendant, on the basis of changing of sign. Therefore, prognostication should be based on the predominance of Mercury in these signs and houses. However, the other influences on Mercury should also be taken into consideration. It is pertinent to state that the full effect of Bhadra Yoga could only be obtained when Mercury is sigularly posited in its own or exalted sign falling in the Angular houses and is also devoid of aspect from any planet and there should not be any kind of interference. This conviction becomes more true in the case of Sagittarius and Pisces Ascendants. In Gemini or Virgo Ascendant, if Mercury gets the conjunction of Venus, it may be construed as a compatible combination that too when Mercury is located in the Gemini sign and in which case this combination would be of Angular and Trinal houses and it will thus be backed by a Rajayoga. The conjunction of Venus with Mercury in Virgo will lower the effect of the Yoga on account of debilitation of Venus though Virgo is an exalted sign for Mercury and that would cause cancellat of debilitation. Nevertheless, it would affect the results of the Bhadra Yoga because it would certainly degrade the strength of Venus. The effect of connotation 'कामी' imbibed in these Shlokas is more pronounced in the event of the presence of Mercury and Venus in the Virgo sign because in this, Venus attains special overbearing effects and becomes a determing factor for a particular vocation.

हंसो हंसस्वरो गौर: सुमुखोन्नतनासिकः ।
श्लेष्मलो मधुपिंगाक्षो रक्तवर्णनखः सुधीः ॥ १३ ॥

पीनगण्डस्थलो वृत्तशिराः सुचरणो नृपः ।
मत्स्याऽङ्कुश - धनुः - शंख-कञ्ज-खट्वांगचिह्नकैः ॥ १४ ॥

चिह्नतांघ्रिकरः स्त्रीषु कामार्तो नैति तुष्टताम् ।
षण्ण्वत्यंगुलो दैर्घ्ये जलक्रीडारतः सुखी ॥ १५ ॥

गंगाायमुनयोर्मध्यदेशं पाति शतं समाः ।
वनान्ते निधनं याति भुक्त्वा सर्वसुखं भुवि ॥ १६ ॥

13-16: Features of Hamsa Yoga: The native of Hamsa Yoga will possess voice anal to swan (hamsa), fair in complexion, charming face and well developed nose, phlegmatic nature, having honey like reddish brown coloured eyes, reddish nails and is an intelligent person. He is like a king with well moulded cheeks, round forehead and elegant feet. He possesses marks of fish (Matsya), iron hook (Ankusha), Bow (Dhanusha), Conch (Sankha) Lotus (Kamla) on his hands and feet. He will be of lascivious nature but his lustfulurge of women will remain unsatisfied. He attains a height of 96 Angulas (अंगुल) and have interest in swimming and water sports. Being a contented ruler of the areas between Ganga and Yamuna, he after enjoying all comforts, leaves the world at the age of 100 years.

This birth chart demonstrates an excellent example of Hamsa Yoga. Here, lord of the 4th house (happiness) the Moon is dignified and Karaka of luxuries, Venus is also conjoining them. (Both Moon and Venus get directional strength in the 4th house). This native made tremendous gains through export business and also acquired sizeable property though he already had sufficient parental property. He is famous, fortunate and prosperous person. In this chart, the 2nd and the 7th lord Venus have a connection with the 12th lord Jupiter and that is why developed intimate relations with various young women. "Karaka Bhava" of 2nd house (speach), is Jupiter, Venus Karaka for the speach and Moon (humbleness) and all combined go to indicate that the native will be a soft spoken, a well composed person who would render imposing effect on an individual through. his refined mannerism and captivating speech. In Aries Ascendant, the Yoga is more pronounced because libidinous planet Venus takes over the ownership of the 7th house. It is not intended to discuss Kala Sarpa Yoga but this Yoga is quite prominent in this birth chart because the Hamsa Yoga which delivered royal comforts and luxuriant enjoyments also destroyed its effects. This shows that malice Karakatwa (signification) of Kala Sarpa Yoga did come to play.

The formation of Hamsa Yoga in Cancer Ascendant brings many ups and downs. No doubt, this Yoga gives rise to the fortune of the native and he is bestowed with opulent wealth and abundant property but Jupiter being the lord of the 6th house becomes cause. for the disease and having posited in the Ascendant (body), the native will fall victim to some serious disease. Here, Jupiter's connection with any planet either through conjunction or aspect will land the native into litigation related to the house owned by these planets. This effect is quite evident in the horoscope discussed here after.

**Data :**Date of birth 18/19-7-1955; Time of birth, 4-50 hrs. (IST); Latitude, 28°21' (N); Longitude 79°-23' (E)

Jupiter is posited in the Ascendant thus gives rise to Hamsa Yoga. The native has been suitably benefited with this Yoga. Mars being the lord of the 10th house duly conjoined with the lord of the 2nd house (wealth) is placed with Jupiter in the Ascendant. On account of this combination, the native is a Sales Tax officer and amassed so much wealth that he could be counted as wealthiest in the strata of the middle class. One day, he was caught red handed while accepting the bribe. This incident gave such a rude shock that he became partially lunatic. Besides he was prosecuted by the Government and terminated from the service. The reason for all this malady is quite obvious. Mars is the lord of the 10th house which represents the Government. Jupiter being the 6th lord, depicts litigation and therefore, litigation with Government became evident and the Sun was the cause i.e. wealth which added fuel to the fire.

In this horoscope, Saturn is aspecting Jupiter and other planets. in the Ascendant. Although Jupiter does not aspect Saturn, the Jupiters sign Sagittarius is under the aspect of Saturn and Saturn's sign Capricorn is aspected by Jupiter. Therefore, both these planets are aspecting the signs of each other and involving the 6th house (litigation) and the 7th house (wife). The native being under mental-tension, started harassing his wife who eventually deserted him and started living in her father's house. The father of the native's wife being a renowned lawyer got the native and his family entangled in a litigation and obtained divorce for his daughter.

The idea of citing these cases is that the results of these Yogas should be delineated with due care and after a detailed analyses. Predicting results merely on the basis of the right planet at the right place as propounded by the Sage for these Yogas may land one into an embarrassing situation.

समौष्ठ: कृशमध्यश्च चन्द्रकान्तिरुचिः पुमान् ।
सुगन्धो नातिरक्तांगों न हस्वो नातिदीर्धकः ॥ १७ ॥

समस्वच्छरदो हस्तिनाद आजानुबाहुधृक् ।
मुखं विश्वांगुलं दैर्ध्ये विस्तारे च दशाङ्गुलम् ॥ १८ ॥

मालव्यो मालवाख्यं च देशं पाति ससिन्धुकम् ।
सुखं सप्ततिवर्षान्तं भुक्त्वा याति सुरालयम् ॥ १९ ॥

17-19: Features of Malavya Yoga : The native having the Malavya Yoga possesses beauteous lips, slim waist, splendour alike Moon, body emitting special fragrance, normal redish complexion, medium height, uniform and neat teeth, voice resembling elephant's loud cry (trumpet i.e. deep thick voice), elongated arms, length of face 13 and breadh 10 Agulas (अंगुल). After attaining the rulership of sindh and Malwa and experiencing comforts and happiness for 70 years, he departs from this world for heavenly abode.

i)It is said that the lord of the 2nd and the 7th houses is posited in 2nd or 7th house becomes Markesha. This principle tends to cause some kind of doubt about the efficacy of this yoga in case of Aries and Scorpio Ascendants, because the Antardasa of Venus may inflict death and the native when having this thing in store, how can he enjoy material comforts? However, it is our humble submission that one should not rush through in declaring this result unless he has meticulously ascertained the longevity of the native. It is also necessary to know whether Venus is under the influence of any malefic planets or not. Even though Venus is being influenced by the malefic planets and if the native has a good longevity, this period will pass away merely causing some kind of physical distress which however, will not leave any telling effects.

ii)Malavya Yoga in Aries Ascendant confers marriage or love with a woman, wealth, family comforts, prosperity, accretion of wealth, progress in the vocation of the children or business tours etc. While the Scorpio Ascendant no doubt, gives marriage or woman's love but it also causes heavy expenditure. The business tours are by and large, remain unsuccessful. The relations with the partner and relatives become estranged. Wife may contract some disease. Depletion of wealth may also be observed.

iii)The Antardasa of Venus in Cancer Ascendant does cause sufferings but Venus being the lord of an Angular house, the effect gets neutralised and the results of the lord of the 11th house becomes more pronounced which according to Maharishi is of malefic nature.

iv)The Antardasa of Venus in Libra Ascendant does cause some physical sufferings but of an ordinary nature. However, in Taurus Ascendant, the intensity of sufferings is more severe because with this Ascendant, Venus attains the lordship of the 1st house (body) and the 6th house (disease). However, good results relating to financial matters are not experienced in both these Ascendants. In Libra Ascendant, if Venus gets the association of the lords of auspicious houses, it may confer success specifically in the worldly matters but in Taurus Ascendant, with whatever house Venus establishes its connection, the native would get involved in litigation relating to the signification of that particular house.

v)Malavya Yoga delineates specific results in Capricorn and Aquarius Ascendants provided Venus forms connections with the lords of auspicious houses. In these Ascendants, Venus becomes Yogakarakas being the lord of Angular and Trinal houses.

vi)Formation of Malvya Yoga in Gemini and Virgo Ascendants, the signs of Mercury, its results are excellent. In this case if Venus has connection with the lord of any Angular houses through conjunction or aspect etc., the results would be par excellent because this relationship would be amongst the Yogakaraka planets. Malavya Yoga in Gemini Ascendant makes the native intelligent and he will have good earnings in instructional vocation (teaching, disseminating knowledge etc.) but in Virgo Ascendant, the native will get success in the business activities.

vii)To get material happiness in Sagittarius and Pisces Ascendants by Malavya Yoga would be quite doubtful because Venus over here acquires ownership of auspicious houses. However, in Pisces Ascendant, when Venus forms certain particular connections with some lords of the houses, the results of some favourable events or attributes are observed. Here are two horoscopes to affirm these contentions.

In the instant horoscope, Venus is in Pisces sign and located in the 4th house hence Malavya Yoga. This Venus is also the lord

of the 6th house which signifies fights, litigations etc. thereby forming a combination of certain attainments through these traits. If the native makes his earnings in these vocations, it would be quite enterprising. Therefore, the native may pursue legal profession. Actually, he is a very famous, efficient and successful advocate. Jupiter which is a "Karaka Bhava" for speech is positioned in the 10th house free from any type of affliction. In natural horoscope, Venus owns the 2nd house which denotes speech, is the lord of the 6th house and in the sign of exaltation in the birth horoscope aspecting the "Karaka Bhava". These positional qualities of Venus in the nativity lended full support of making him a renowned advocate. The status and the educational level of a native could be identified by analysing the enitre qualities of the 5th, the 9th and 10th houses. Although this is a general principle but these houses and their lords are, in a way, very much inter-related in this horoscope and that is why the native could have good achievements in his life.

Data : Date of birth 17-2-1964; Time of birth 9-35 hrs. (IST); Latitude, 28°-21' (N); Longitude, 79°-23' (N).

In this birth chart, Venus being in the Pisces sign, is posited in the Ascendant. As such Venus is forming Malavya Yoga. In the Pisces nativity, Venus owns the 3rd and the 8th houses, hence becomes inauspicious. Every house may be auspicious and inauspicious does have some beneficial significations. Like, the 3rd house is connected with technical, sculpture, engineering type of education. In the same manner, the 8th house signifies minerals and materials found beneath the earth. Consequently, Venus would represent Mining Engineering. If this Venus creates any nexus with the house of education (5th house), the native will study these subjects and if Venus also forms connection with the house of vocation (10th house), he will pursue the same profession.

In the instant horoscope, Venus does have linkage with both these houses (5th and 10th) as the lords of these houses being in conjunction with Venus are posited in the Ascendant. The native having passed his master of engineering in mining is employed in the same profession. Significator of intelligence Mercury is posited in the 11th house and aspeceting the 5th house and Karaka of wisdom Jupiter being in its own sign as become powerful. The native remained a brilliant student and even after the completion of his education, he is still busy in academic and scholarly pursuits.

Incidentally, it is necessary to clarify one fact over here, that is, if the Moon, Venus and Jupiter are conjoined with Mars, the native definitely gets selected in Indian Administrative Service (I.A.S.) because, in this format, Mars, the lord of the 9th house joins the 10th lord Jupiter. The native could not get success in I.A.S. even after three attempts because he did not get support from of the 9th lord Mars in his nativity.

20-22 : Feature of Sasa Yoga: A person having Sasa Purusha Yoga will possess small teeth and soft faces brave but will not have small body. He will have narrow waist with weak loins, elegant thighs, intelligent and will have interests in forests, hills etc., powerful and be an army chief. Such natives do have protruding teeth to some extent, agile, will possess special knowledge in metallurgy, indulges in flirtation with women, plunderer of others wealth etc. This kind of native will have marks like garland (mala), Veena, Mridanga (percussion instrument) and weapons in his hands and feet. After having served the holy Earth and lived happily for 70 years, he departs for the heavenly abode.

One should delineate the results in Aries, Cancer, Leo, Scorpio Ascendants with great care, specially in the case of Cancer and Leo Ascendants an extra precaution is to be exercised because the position of Saturn will give the lordship of the 6th or the 8th house as well. In Scorpio Ascendant, due care is also required but with a deep study and proper insight, if the pit falls are located and kept in mind, one can avoid wrong and unmindful prognostications.
