Verse 1–3

1-3 : Maharishi Parasara said - O Vipra! Now I divulge the secret of a supirior knowledge which Lord Brahma himself narrated for the welfare of the world at large. This is known as "Sudarshana Chakra" on the basis of which, the Astrologers will develop a clear insight of perdiction from the Ascendant and the houses, for the persons and their related auspicious and inauspicious results from birth through death, for every year, every month and every day.

Verse 4

4 : O Brahmin ! Draw three circles keeping one centre. By drawing 12 lines from the centre forming 12 compartments (in each circle), it will create a Chakra known as Sudrashana Chakra.

Verse 5–6

5-6 : In the first circle (near to the Centre) write down all the houses including the Ascendant alongwith the planets in the twelve compartments. In the next circle, starting from the sign of the Moon's Ascendant (sign), place all the planets in their respective houses. In the outer circle commecing from the sign of the Sun (the sign holding Sun in it), fix all the planets in all the houses. In this manner, every house of the Chakra will have three signs.

Sudarshana Chakra

Diagram from BPHS chapter 76
Diagram from the source text, BPHS chapter 76.

In the exampled horoscope, the Ascendant is Aries which is denoted by 1 and placed in the first compartment of the inner circle and rest of the planets are placed in their respective sign in this circle. The Moon is posited in the Gemini and therefore, Gemini (Moon's sign) is placed above the Aries in the middle circle and the other planets are positioned in their respective signs. Similarly, the Sun is in the Leo sign of the birth chart and accordingly, placed above the Gemini in the outer circle and others planets in the same fashion, have taken their respective positions in the outer circle. After this, Sudarshana Chakra is ready for delineation.

Verse 7–9

7-9 : The pecularity of Sudarshana Chakra is that, the Ist house, the Ascendant, the Moon and the Sun get combined.Considering this (Ist house in respect of all the three) as Ascendant, the house of wealth (2nd house there from) etc. be reckoned. Thereafter, in accordance to the positions of the planets in these houses, the results be delineated. The Sun be considered aupicious in the Ascendant and inauspicious in the other houses. Malefic planets if are in the sign of exaltation or own sign, may not be treated as inauspicious. In this way, after looking into the auspiciousness and inauspiciousness of the planets, the results should be predicted.

Verse 10

10 : The house which is harboured by its lord or posited with or aspected by the auspicious planets becomes powerful while the aspects and positioning of the malefic planets a house will make them weak.

Verse 11–13

11-13 : The results of the combined houses, be considered on the basis of the presence of the planets over there. If a house is devoid of planet but receives the aspect, the results be stated accordingly. The house having the benefic planets will be auspicious and the house occupied by the malefics, will deliver inauspicious results. If a house holds mixed planets (both the benefic and malefic), the results will be auspicious, if the number of the benefic planets is more and if the malefic planets are more in numbers, the malefic results will prevail. In this manner, the combinations and the aspects of the planets to a particular house (i.e. the benefic aspects to a houses will deliver auspicious and malefic aspects to a house will cause inauspicious results) be taken into account and the result be stated in accordance to the factors which are more pronoduced.

(i)The first and the formost principle is that the results of the house will depend upon the planets occupying the house.

(ii)In the absence of any planet, the results are delineated onthe basis of the aspects received by a particular house.

(iii)The consideration of auspiciousness and inauspiciouness of the planets in a house is very important. If it is assessed that all the planets are benefic, the auspicious results will come in planty and easily. If malefic planets are influencing the house, such house will be deprived of the results connected with the Karatakwa of the house.

(iv)If a house is holding both benefic and malefic planets, the results will be influenced by the planets which are more in number.

(v)Suppose the number of both benefic and malefic are identical, in that case, the strength of the planets is to be ascertained. If the strength of the benefic planet is more, the results will be auspicious and in a reverse situation, the malefic planets will gain the strength.

(vi)If a house is bereft of planets, the results will be on the basis of aspects. Benefic aspects will indicate auspicious and malefic inauspicious results. Should both types of aspects be in an equal proportion, the strength of the asspects will decide the result.

Verse 14

14 : If a house is neither occupied by the planets nor receiving the aspects, the results then be judged on the basis of the auspicious and inauspicious Karkatwas of the lord of the house.

Verse 15–16

15-16 : If a benefic planet is having many inauspicious Vargas, it is considered delivering malefic results. If a malefic planets occupy more number of auspicious Vargas, benefic results be predicted. The placement of a planet in the sign of exaltation, own sign and in the Vargas of the benefic planets will make the planet as auspicous and positioning of a planet in the enemy or debilitation signs or its divisions (six fold), renders the planet as inauspicious.

Verse 17

17 : Maharishi Parasara said-OBrahmin! In this manner, the auspiciousness and the inauspiciousness of the planets, and the houses be considered, for predicting the results of the concerned houses.

A malefic planet, posited in the deblilation or inimical sign will denote inauspicious Varga and benefic planet, posited in the exaltation or own sign will indicate auspicious Varga. It is on the basis of this criteria, each planet has been assigned the numbers shown in the last two rows of the Saptvarga's table appended below. It may be noted that more importance is given to the natural beneficence rather than the criteria of friendly relationship.

It is essesntial for the houses, first of all, to establish the auspiciousness and inauspiciousness of the planets connected with them. Let us take the position of the Sun in the nativity. In the Saptavargas Chakra, it has secured 5 Vargas of auspiciousness and 2 Vargas of inauspiciousness, because, the Sun has gone in the sign of debilitation in the Navamsa and in the rest of the Vargas, it is situated in the friendly or Vargas of the benefic planets. Although, in Trimsamsa, the Sun is in the Varga of Mercury, but the Sun is the enemy of Mercury and hence is considered to be in an inauspicious Varga (see Example 94, Chapter-75).

The Moon secures 6 auspicious and 1 inauspicious Vargas. In the Panchdha Maitri Chakra, the Moon has become enemy of Mars. The lords of the other signs and Vargas are either friends of the Moon or benefic planets. Therefore, the Moon has secured 6 auspicious Vargas.

Mars, in Trimsamsa has gone in the Varga of Saturn. The Vargas of other planets occupied by Mars are either friendly or benefic planets.

Mercury obtained 5 auspicious and 2 inauspicious Vargas. Mercury is in the sign of the Sun which is a malefic planet. Besides, in Dawadasamsa Varga, it has gone in the sign of debilitation and hence 2 inauspicious Vargas.

Jupiter has also secured 6 auspicious and 1 inauspicious Vargas. The Sun is the best friend of Jupiter and that is why, the Sun has been counted as auspicious over here. In the Panchadha Maitri Chakra (see Example-94, Chapter-75). Saturn is the friend of the Jupiter but in natural relationship, they are enemy to each other. It could have been considered an inauspicious Varga but for Jupiter securing auspicious Varga on the basis of compound relationship.

On similar logic, Venus has 4 auspicious and 3 inauspicious Vargas. Saturn gets 5 auspicious and 2 icious Varga Like wise, the auspicious and inauspicious Vargas for Rahu and Ketu are 4, 3 and 1, 6 respectively.

From these analyses, it can be said that the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus are auspicious planets while amongst the malefic planets, the Sun is little above medium auspicious. Mars with 6 auspicious and one inauspicious Vargas can not, as well, be termed as truly inauspicious. Inauspiciousness of Ketu is the maximumbut Saturn and Rahu are moderately inauspicious planets.

The analyses of the houses are discussed here after.

The First House : It does not possess any planet and hence it will not gain any strength on account of planetary combinations. Let us now see the position of the aspects on the Ascendant. The 1st house receives the aspect of Saturn only, which has acquired, 5 auspicious and 2 inauspicious Vargas and on this basis, Saturn becomes benefic. But it is a natural malefic planet. This will thus signify medium health (neither very sound not weak) of the native.. The effect of Saturn will also give him good height and black hair. At times, he will have complaint of headache. One important fact to be noted over here is that if, a malefic planet secures good number of auspicious Vargas, it is considered benefici in the financial matters but will not do good from the health point of view. It could thus be concluded that the birth of the native would have been in a well to do family.

The Second House : This house is also devoid of any planet but it receives 9th aspect of Rahu (the lord of the 2nd house Venus has secured little more than medium auspiciousness). Therefore, the native will have weak eye sight and the native would have taken spectacle at an early age and will be possessing a peculiar white patch on his face. The 2nd house signifies the life span of adolescent after the childhood which might have passed through well by the native.

The Third House : This house is occupied by the Moon, Jupiter and Mars and all of them have secured more number of the auspicious Vargas. This, therefore, will signify that the native is bestowed with the happiness of many younger co-borns. Besides, he will be an expert in handicraft and will perform his skill with great dexterity and precision.

The Fourth House : This house harbours Venus and Saturn. Venus has auspiciousness little over medium and the atus of Saturn has already been described while analysing the first house. The native is conferred with house, social status, fame but will not be having the benefit of the mother's comforts.

The Fifth House : The Sun and Mercury are occupying this house. The Sun is generally clubbed with the other malefic planets except being in the Ascendant. The Sun, however, has secured 5 auspicious and 2 inauspicious points in the Saptavarga Chakra. Mercury has also obtained the same count. Therefore, it can be concluded that the education will run well but at an average level.

The Sixth House : It is posited with Rahu which possesses medium inauspiciousness and therefore, the health will be mediocre.

The Seventh House : This house also does not hold any planet. Therefore, it should be assessed on the basis of aspects. Jupiter with 6 auspicious and 1 inauspicious points is aspecting the 7th house. Therefore, the married life will be comfortable and the marriage alliance will also be with a good family.

The Eight House : There is no planet in it and hence, the the aspect on this house be considered. Ketu is aspecting the 8th house. In this nativity, Ketu is the most malefic planet. Therefore, the native will not cherish a long life. In the Chapter of Ashtakavarga, the native's age has been assessed as 51 years, 3 months, 27 days and 12 hrs.

The Ninth House : There is no planet in it but it is receiving the apects of the Moon, Jupiter and Mars planets. The Moon and Jupiter have been proved as most auspicious planets in their respective assessment carried out earlier. Although Mars is a natural malefic planet, it has secured 6 auspicious and 1 inauspicious counts. Hence the native shall be inclined towards religion, be famous and will receive blessings of big persons.

In this manner, the rest of the houses may also be analysed.

Verse 18½

18-18½ : Maitreya said O Maharishi ! When the predictions for the natives could be made through Sudarshana Chakra why the other sages narrate the results from the Ascendant? I had only this much doubt and O-Lord, kindly clarify the same.

Verse 19–20

19-20 : Parasara said - If the Sun and the Moon are posited in the different signs other than the sign of the Ascendant, the results from the Sudarshna Chakra be only delineated. Between these three viz., the Ascendant (Lord), the Sun and the Moon, if two or all the three are posited in the Ascendant, the results be declared on the basis of the Ascendant.

Verse 21–23

21-23 : O Vipra! Now I will narrate the results of every year etc., from the Sudarshna Chakra in accordance to Dasa and Antardasa. Assigning one year to each house commencing from the Ascendant, assume every house as Ascendant for that very year and the following house as the 2nd house and soon. Thereafter, presume an Antardasa of one month in the every year in each house and then from the Ist house of the Antardasa, the 12 signs in seriatim, be assumed as 12 months which should be perceived as the results giving months connected with the 12 houses.

Similarly, commencing from the house identical with the month, each house be taken for the Pratyantar Dasa of two and a half days. Considering the sign of the Pratyantar Dasa as the Ascendant, the results of the 2nd, 3rd houses etc. be taken as the effects for two and half days each. In the same way, the Sookshma Dasa of 12½ hrs. is worked out and its results may also be considered in the same manner

Verse 24–26

24-26 : If the Angular, Trinal and the 8th houses from the house emanating the Dasa, are occupied with the benefic planets, it (Dasa) will deliver auspicious results. Rahu and Ketu, occupying the houses will cause loss to such houses. The house holding more number of male cplanets gets destroyed. Barring the 6th and the 12th houses, the benefic planets in other houses bestow auspicious results. The malefic in the 3rd, 6th and 11th house give benefic results. (That is benefic planets in the 6th and the 12th house will do harm while malefic planets in the 3rd, the 6th and the 11th house will do good). In this manner, the results of every year, month, day etc. be assessed right from the time of birth.

Ten cycles of 12 houses from the Ascendant (12 years of each cycle) of Dasas or Antardasa should be considered. (The ten cycles of 12 houses make 120 years of Poorna Ayu, a full life cycle under Vimshottari Dasa system).

Yearly Dasas : Suppose we need to delineate the results of the first year, the Ascendant be taken as first year. other words, the first house will have the first Dasa of one year. It may be seen from the Sudarshana Chakra that the birth Ascendant is the Aries sign and hence, the Aries sign will rule over the first year of the native. Since the Ascendant denotes first year, the rest of the houses of the Chakra will remain as it is. The third house is occupied by the Moon, Jupiter and Mars. As per stated principle, malefic planets in the 3rd, the 6th and the 11th houses confer favourable results. Here, Mars is the only malefic planet but vide Saptavargas Chakra, its inauspiciousness has been mitigated and has since acquired the auspicious qualities.

The 4th house, with the position of beneficplanet Venus over there, will deliver favourable results. Besides, Saturn is also posited over there but Saturn has also shed its malevolent traits as per Saptavarga Chakra and has since secured some element of beneficence.

The 5th house is occupied by the Sun and Mercury. The Sun is in its own sign and Mercury is an auspicious planet. Hence, this will deliver favourable results. In the 6th house and the 12th houses, Rahu and Ketu respectively are posited. The rule relating to this is that, the house which harbours Rahu or Ketu, will cause harm to such house.

Monthly Antardasas : The first year belongs to the Ascendant and accordingly, the first month of Antardasa will also go to the Ascendant (the Ist house). The Ist house is owned by Aries sign and as such the month will also be that of Aries. The second monthly Antardasa will pertain to the 2nd house i.e. of Taurus sign and it should be treated as Ascendant for the second month. It means that the physical comforts of the native will be identical to the status of the 2nd house (as Ascendant) and also the lord of the 2nd house in the nativity should by studied accordingly. In the same month, the 3rd house will show the results of the 2nd house i.e., for wealth etc. Likewise, the subsequent houses are studied. In the same manner, the third house be reckoned as Ascendant for the third month and for which the 4th house of the birth chart will denote the 2nd house and status of the wealth etc. should be interpreted therefrom.

For the second year, the 2nd house should be treated as the Ascendant. Taurus owns the 2nd house and as such, the Taurus Dasa will operate in the second year and for which the 3rd house will act as house of wealth, (2nd house) etc. The rest of the house will take their positions considering the 2nd house as Ascendant. In this Dasa, the first monthly Antardasa will also go to the 2nd house (as Ascendant) and so on and so forth.

Under the same scheme, the 3rd house will assume the role of Ascendant in the third year and its yearly Dasa will operate. The 2nd, the 3rd house etc. will be represented by the 4th, the 5th houses respectively. In the same fashion, the 12 years results will be delineated from the 12 houses.

In the 2nd cycle of the Dasas, the 13th year will again belong to the Ascendant and the Dasas of the succeeding years should be situdied exactly on the lines explained earlier.

Pratyantar Dasas : Commencing from the monthly Ascendant (of the Antardasa), the 12 signs will indicate the 12 Pratyantar Dasas of 2½ days (2½ x 12 = 30 days = one month). Let us suppose, we have to see the result of the first 2½ days of the first month and the first year. Here, the Ascendant will act as the Ist house and following it, will be the 2nd house and so on. What, we mean to say is that the total effect for these 2½ days should be interpreted from the corresponding houses, keeping the Ist house as the Ascendant. Accordingly, for the next 2½ days, the 2nd house will assume the position of the Ascendant and the effects be interpreted from all the 12 houses in the same manner.

In the Sudarshana Chakra system, 30 days are taken for a month which is identical to a solar month. For the benefic of the readers, the Dasa, Antardasa and Pratyantardasa Chakras representing the Ist twelve years cycle, the Ist twelve months cycle and the Ist twelve 2½ (2 days - 12 hrs.) cycle respectively are illustrated and could be applied on the example being considered for this purpose.
