1-22 : Maharishi Parasara said, O Superior Brahmin ! Now I will describe the planetary rays. In the state of deep exalation, the unit of the rays for the Sun etc. are respectively 10, 9, 5, 5, 7, 8 and 5 units. The unit of the rays at the deep debilitation point is nil and the unit of the rays for the point in between these two extreme points (the deep exaltation and the deep debilitation) is ascertained on a proportionate basis. In order to determine the rays of a particular planet, deduct the sign of debilitation from the longtitude of that planet and if the resultant turned out to be more than 6 signs, it should be subtracted from the 12 signs (if the resultant is less than 6 signs, it should be kept unaltered). The resultant is then multiplied by the unit of the rays assigned to such planet. The product be then divided by 6. The resultant will denote the number of rays of that planet.
TABLE 38
Rays of Deep exaltation point :
| Planets | Sun | Moon | Mars | Marc | Jup | Ven | Sat |
| At deep exaltation | 10 | 9 | 5 | 5 | 7 | 8 | 5 |
The procedure for determining the proportionate unit of the rays at a point falling in between the deep exaltation and deep debilitation points as narrated in the foregoing axioms is summed up as follows:
i)The deep debilitation sign of the concerned planet is deducted from the longitude of the said planet. If the resultant figure in less than 6 signs (180°), it should be multiplied by the unit of rays of the deep exaltation point of the same planet (as shown in the above table). The product be divided by 6. The outcome will indicate the number of rays for the planet.
ii)If the outcome happens to be more than six signs, it should be further deducted from the 12 signs (360°) and the figures so obained be multiplied by the unit of the rays of the deep exaltation point of the planet and asusual, the product be divided by 6 and the resultant will denote the number of rays for the planet.

3-7: O Vipra! some of the other Acharyas have indicated further refinements over the determined number of the rays. If a planet is posited in its sign of exaltation, the determined number of the rays are trebled. If it is in the Moola Trikona sign, the determined rays are to be doubled. In case of being in its own sign, the determined number is multiplied by 3 and then divided by 12. If a planet is in the Adhimitra's (best friend) sign, the determined rays be multiplied by 4 and then divided by 3. In the event of friendly sign, the determined rays be multiplied by 6 and then divided by 5. In case of planet being in the enemy sign, the determined number of rays be brought down to half and if it is in the Adhishatru's sign (bitter enemy), the determined rays are first doubled and then divided by 5. If the planet is in the neutral sign, no correction is called far.
Barring Mercury and Venus, the number of rays in respect of all other planets will get annulled on getting combust. The learned astrolegers should delineate the results on the basis of the determined number of rays duly moderated (i.e. final net numbers).
| Planet | Deep debilitation degrees | |
| 1 | Sun | Libra 10°- |
| 2 | Moon | Scorpio 3° |
| 3 | Mars | Cancer 28° |
| 4 | Mercury | Pisces 15° |
| 5 | Jupiter | Capricorn 5° |
| 6 | Venus | Virgo 27° |
| 7 | Saturn | Aries 20° |
Let us take an example and apply these rules to make the finer details understadable by the readers.
Example : 94
Data : Date of birth, 6-7-1977; Time of birth 9-30 p.m.; Latitude, 28°-43'(N); Longitude, 77°-47'(E).
The logitudinal details of the birth chart of the native are as follows:
| Planets | Sign | Deg. | Mint. | Sec. |
| Ascendant | Aries | 21 | 35 | 46 |
| Sun | Leo | 20 | 23 | 27 |
| Moon | Gemini | 1 | 57 | 9 |
| Mars | Gemini | 9 | 55 | 36 |
| Mercury | Leo | 17 | 43 | 8 |
| Jupiter | Gemini | 9 | 7 | 3 |
| Venus | Caner | 17 | 12 | 20 |
| Saturn | Caner | 29 | 59 | 0 |
Mercury is the only planet which is combust. As per the aphorisms expounded in the foregoing Shalokas, Mercury insipite of being combust, its number of rays do not get annulled. The correction enunciated in these Shlokas are entirely based upon the Panchdha Maitri (compound relationship) of the planets in the nativity and therefore, it is necessary to draw Pachdha Maitri Chakra (Chart) for the native.
Panchdha Maitri Chakra :
| Planets | Sun | Moon | Mars | Merc. | Jup. | Ven. | Sat. |
| Best Friend | Sun Mars Jup | Sun Merc | Sun | Ven | Sun | Merc | Merc |
| Friend | - | Sat | Ven Sat | Mars Jup Sat | Sat | Mars Jup | Jup . |
| Neutral | Ven Sat | Ven | Jup Moon Merc | Sun Moon | Moon Mars Merc Ven | Sun Moon | Sun Moon Mars Ven |
| Enemy | Merc | Mars Jup | - | - | - | Sat | - |
| Bitter Enemy | - | - | - | - | - | - | - |
The Sun :
| Sign | Deg. | Mint. | Sec. | |
| Longitude of the Sun | 04 | 20 | 23 | 27 |
| Less : Deep debilitation point of the Sun : | 06 | 10 | 00 | 00 |
| 10 | 10 | 23 | 27 |
Since the balance is more then 6 signs, reduction from 12 signs be carried out.
| 12 | 00 | 00 | 00 | |
| (-) | 10 | 10 | 23 | 27 |
| 01 | 19 | 36 | 33 |
The assigned number of rays to the Sun is 10 and therefore, the above balance figures be multiplied by 10 and divided by 6.
| (1 - 19- 36 - 33) × 10 | |
| 6 | |
| (16 - 16 - 5 - 30) | = 2 - 23 |
| 6 |
The Sun is posited in the Moola Trikona sign and therefore, this figure should be doubled.
(2 - 23) × 2 = 4 - 46
The net number of rays of the Sun = 4 - 46
The Moon
| Sign | Deg. | Mint. | Sec. | |
| Longitude of the Moon | 2 | 01 | 57 | 09 |
| Less : Deep debilitation point of the Moon | 8 | 03 | 00 | 00 |
| 5 | 28 | 57 | 09 |
Since the balance is less 6 signs, these figures be multiplied by 9 and divided by 6
| (5 - 28 - 57 - 9) × 9 | |
| 6 | |
| (53 - 20 - 34 - 21) | = 8 - 28 |
| 6 |
The Moon is located in a Adhimitra sign (best friend). Therefore, the above number of rays be multiplied by 4 and divided by 3
| (8 - 28) × 4 | = 11 - 27 |
| 3 | |
| The net number of rays of the Moon | = 11 - 27 |
Mars
| Sign | Deg. | Mint. | Sec. | |
| Longitude of the Mars | 2 | 9 | 55 | 36 |
| Less : Deep debilitation point of the Mars | 3 | 28 | 00 | 00 |
| 10 | 11 | 55 | 36 |
Since the balance is more than 6 signs, reduction from the 12 signs be carried out.
| 12 | 00 | 00 | 00 | |
| (-) | 10 | 11 | 55 | 36 |
| 01 | 18 | 04 | 24 |
The above figures be multiplied by 5 (rays of Mars) and divided by
| (1 - 18 - 4 - 24) × 5 | |
| 6 | |
| (8 - 00 - 22) | = 1 - 10 |
| 6 |
Mars is posited in the neutral sign, hence no further moderation is required.
The net number of rays of Mars = 1 - 10
Mercury
| Sign | Deg. | Mint. | Sec. | |
| Longitude of Mercury | 04 | 17 | 43 | 08 |
| Less : Deep debilitation point of Mercury | 11 | 15 | 00 | 00 |
| 05 | 02 | 43 | 08 |
Since the balance is less than 6 signs, it can straight away, be multiplied by 5 (rays of Mercury) and divided by 6.
| (5 - 2 - 43 - 8) × 5 | ||
| 6 | ||
| = | (25 - 13 - 35 - 40) | = 4 - 7 |
| 6 |
Mercury is positsed in 6 neutral sign, hence no further moderation is required.
The net number of rays of Mercury = 4 - 7
Jupiter
| Sign | Deg. | Mint. | Sec. | |
| Longitude of Jupiter | 2 | 9 | 07 | 03 |
| Less : Deep debilitation point of Jupiter | 9 | 5 | 00 | 00 |
| 5 | 4 | 07 | 03 |
Since the balance figure being less than 6 signs, it could be straight away be multiplied by 7 (rays of Jupiter) and divided by 6.
| (5 - 4 - 7 - 3) × 7 | ||
| 6 | ||
| = | (35 - 28 - 49 - 21) | = 5 - 30 |
| 6 |
Jupiter is also occupying the neutral sign, hence no further moderation is required.
The net number of rays of Jupiter = 5 - 30
Venus
| Sign | Deg. | Mint. | Sec. | |
| Longitude of Venus | 3 | 17 | 12 | 20 |
| Less : Deep debilitation point of Venus | 5 | 27 | 00 | 00 |
| 9 | 20 | 12 | 20 |
Here, the balance is more then 6 sign, hence it is to be subtracted from the 12 signs.
| 12 | 00 | 00 | 00 | |
| (-) | 9 | 20 | 12 | 20 |
| 2 | 9 | 47 | 40 |
The balance be multiplied by 8 (rays of Venus) and divided by 6.
| (2 - 9 - 47 - 40) × 6 | ||
| 6 | ||
| = | (18 - 18 - 21 - 20) | = 3 - 3 |
| 6 |
Venus is also posited in the neutral sign hence, no moderation is necessary.
The net number of rays of Venus = 3 - 3
Saturn
| Sign | Deg. | Mint. | Sec. | |
| Longitude of Saturn | 3 | 29 | 59 | 00 |
| Less : Deep debilitation point of Saturn | 0 | 20 | 00 | 00 |
| 3 | 09 | 59 | 00 |
The balance is less than 6 sign and hence, to be multiplied by 5 (rays of Saturn) and divided by 6.
| (3 - 9 - 59 - 00) × 5 | ||
| 6 | ||
| = | (15 - 49 - 55 - 00) | = 2 - 23 |
| 6 |
Saturn is also placed in a neutral sign and hence, no further moderation is required.
The net number of rays of Saturn = 2 - 23
The number of rays secured by each planet in this example is illustrated in a tabular form, as under :
| Planets | Sun | Moon | Mars | Mer. | Jup. | Ven. | Sat. | Total |
| Number of Rays | 4 | 11 | 1 | 4 | 5 | 3 | 2 | 32 |

20 : Like, a native is born in a Kshatrya family (securing total number of rays more the 50), he will be a an emperor. If the native is born in a Vaishya family (with the same count of rays), he will be a king. If the native takes birth in a Sudra family (under the same circumstances), he will be wealthy; and if the birth being in a Brahmin family, he will be highly learned, scholar and a religious person.

21 : The planets heading towards their sign of exaltation will give full results in accordance to the total number of the rays of such planets. If they are heading towards the sign of debilitation, the effects will be less (lessor than the actual results on the basis of the total number of rays obtained by the planet).
सर्वेषामेव खेटानामेवं रश्मिवशाद् द्विज ! ।

22-23 : O Brahmin ! The auspicious and inauspicious results are in occordance to the number of rays secured by any planet. The prognostication of the correct results without the knowledge of the number of rays will not be possible. Therefore, the scholars should determine the number of rays (of the planets) before predicting the results.
