74. SAMUDAYA (COLLECTIVE) ASHTAKAVARGA

द्वादशारं लिखेच्चक्रं जन्मलग्नादिभैर्युतम् ।
सर्वाष्टकफलान्यत्र संयोज्य प्रतिभं न्यसेत् ॥ १ ॥

समुदायाभिधानोऽयमष्टवर्गः प्रकथ्यते ।
अतः फलानि जातानां विज्ञेयानि द्विजोत्तम ! ॥ २ ॥

1-2: Maharishi Parasara said - O, Brahmin! Draw out the twelve compartments (कोष्ठ) of the birth diagram (chakra) and fix all the houses including the Ascendant. Place sum total of the Rekhas of Ashtakavarga of each sign in the Chakra. This is called Samudaya (Collective) Ashtakavarga. Through this, the results for the native are delineated.

Count the contribution in the Aries sign, by all the planets, right from the Sun to Saturn and Ascendant. These figures (Rekhas) obtained in the Model Example is 6,4,5,7,7,7,5 and 4 respectively and the sum total of which comes to 45. Similarly, the total number of Rekhas secured by the other signs shall also be figured out. The easy way of totalling up the Rekhas is to draw out a table of twelve columns for the twelve signs and eight horizontal lines for seven planets and Ascendant. Thereafter, place the number of Rekhas secured by the each sign from the each planet below them. The bottom total of the table will indicate Samudaya Ashtakavarga of each sign. Let us draw the table for the Model Example:

From the foregoing tabulation of total Rekhas obtained by each sign through the planets and Ascendant, Samudaya Chakra as described in the Shlokas could be drawn for the Model Example, like a birth chart.

According to some other renderings on the subject, like the one expounded by savant Vaidyanathan, the totalling of the Rekhas secured by the each sign is not carried out.

त्रिंशाधिकफला ये स्यू राशयस्ते शुभप्रदाः ।
पञ्चविंशादि-त्रिंशान्तफला मध्यफला स्मृताः ॥ ३ ॥

अतः क्षीणफला ये ते राशयः कष्टदुःखदा ।
शुभे श्रेष्ठफलान् राशीन् योजयेन्मतिमान्नरः ॥ ४ ॥

कष्टराशीन् सुकार्येषु वर्जयेद् द्विजसत्तम ! ।
श्रेष्ठराशिगतः खेट: शुभोऽन्यत्राऽशुभप्रदः ॥ ५ ॥

3-5 : In the Samudaya Chakra, the sign which has secured more than 30 Rekhas will deliver medium results and in the same way, the signs holding less then 25 Rekhas, their results will be distressful. The planning of propitious work should be done in the signs capable of delivering auspicious results. O superior Brahmin! Auspicious work should be relegated during the distress giving signs. The planet posited in the superior signs is considered auspicious and in other signs as inauspicious.

तन्वादि-व्ययपर्यन्तं दृष्टवा भावफलानि वै ।
अधिके शोभनं ज्ञेयं हीने हानिं विनिर्दिशेत् ॥ ६ ॥

मध्ये मध्यफलं ब्रूयाद् तत्तद्भावसमुद्भवम् ।

6: The results of the houses should be studied in consistence with the density of the Rekhas in each house. If the number of Rekhas are more, the results would be extremely good and should the Rekhas are less in number, it will deliver bad results. If the number of Rekhas are neither less nor more, the results of the same magnitude be predicted.

In the Samudaya chart, the Ascendant of Aries sign is having 40 Rekhas and as and when the planets pass over the Aries sign in transit such planets in accordance to their Karakatwas will confer beneficial results for the houses they own. The planet or the house lord while transiting the Aries sign and whenever Aries sign rises in the east, the work related to the planet or the house lord will gain special benefit. Samudaya Ashtakvarga holds key days or time that would be most auspicious for the native.

Many Astrologers follow some set pattern of predicting the results, such as, if any sign is having 40 Rekhas, the 1st, 13th, 25th, 37th, 49th, 61st, 73rd years of the native will prove fortunate for the native. Alternatively, suppose any sign is securing less number of Rekhas then the 8th, 20th, 22nd, 32nd, 44th, 56th and 68th years of the native will bring physical distress and mental anguish to the native. In this way, whichever house holds high Rekhas, in that year and the years followed at a gap of 12 years therefrom, will deliver benefic results. Similarly, the house which contains less number of Rekhas, in that year and in the subsequent years with the spacing of 12 years will be the distressful years for the native.

मध्यात् फलाधिके लाभो लाभात् क्षीणगतोव्ययः ॥ ७ ॥

लग्नं फलाधिकं यस्य भोगवानर्थवान् हि सः ।
विपरीतेन दारिद्र्यं भवत्येव न संशयः ॥ ८ ॥

7-8 : If the 11th house of the Samudaya Ashtakvarga is having more Rekhas than the Rekhas of the 10th house and if the Rekhas of the 12th house are less than the Rekhas of the 11th house, and the Ascendant has more Rekhas; that native will be fortunate (he will enjoy comforts of all kinds) and wealthy. In the reverse situation (that is 12th house holds more Rekhas than the 11th house and the Ascendant also possesses less Rekhas), the native will definitely labour under poverty.

दशावदिह भावानां कृत्वा खंडत्रयं बुधः ।
पश्येत् पापसमारुढं खंडे कष्टकरं वदेत् ॥ ९ ॥

सौम्यैर्युक्तं शुभं ब्रूयान्मिश्रैर्मिश्रफलं यथा ।
क्रमाद् बाल्याद्यवस्थासु स्खंडत्रयफलं वदेत् ॥ १० ॥

9-10: Like the results of the Dasas, the results of the houses should also be predicted from the three sections (segments). The segment (Khanda) which is having the malefic planets, that part is considered distressful. The segment (Khanda) which holds benefic planets that part will deliver auspicious results and the segment possessing mixed planets (both benefic and malefic) will deliver mixed results. The result from the Ascendant to the 4th house will be of the childhood. From the 5th to the 8th houses, the result of the adulthood and houses between 9th and the 12th will produce the results of the old age.

From these principles, one thing has emerged quite clearly that the deficiency of the Rekhas could get compensated with the placement of benefic planets in a particular segment (Khanda) of the horoscope. Similarly, if the Khanda of the nativity holds least number of Rekhas and on the other hand it is occupied by the malefics planets, the corresponding part of the life of the native will become excessively miserable. Even otherwise, when the Rekhas are less in number, the native suffers from the sickness, mental worries, destitute and disappointments and on the top of it, if it is influenced by the malefics, the miseries will get compounded.

रेखाभिः सप्तभिर्युक्ते मासे मृत्युभयं नृणाम् ।
सुवर्णं विंशतिपलं दद्यात् द्वौ तिलपर्वतौ ॥ ११ ॥

रेखाभिरष्टभिर्युक्ते मासे मृत्युवशो नरः ।
असत्फलविनाशाय दद्यात् कर्पूरजां तुलाम् ॥ १२ ॥

रेखाभिर्नवभियुक्ते मासे सर्पभयं वदेत् ।
अश्वैश्चतुर्भिः संयुक्तं रथं दद्याच्छुभाप्तये ॥ १३ ॥

रेखाभिर्दशभिर्युक्ते मासे शस्त्रभयं तथा ।
दद्याच्छुभफलावाप्त्यै कवचं वज्रसंयुतम् ॥ १४ ॥

अभिशापभयं यत्र रेखा रुद्रसमा द्विज ! ।
दिपलस्वर्णघटितां प्रदद्यात् प्रतिमां विधोः ॥ १५ ॥

युक्ते द्वादशरेखाभिर्जले मृत्युभयं वदेत् ।
सशस्यभूमिं विप्राय दत्वा शुभफलं भवेत् ॥ १६ ॥

विश्वप्रमितरेखाभिर्व्याघ्रान्मृत्युभयं तथा ।
विष्णोर्हिरण्यगर्भस्य दानं कुर्याच्छुभाप्तये ॥१७ ॥

शक्रप्रमितरेखाभिर्युक्ते मासे मृतेर्भयम् ।
वराहप्रतिमां दद्यात् कनकेन विनिर्मिताम् ॥ १८ ॥

तिथिभिश्च नृपाद् भीतिर्दद्यात् तत्र गजं द्विज ! ।
रिष्टं षोडशभिर्दद्यात् मूर्ति कल्पतरोस्तथा ॥ १९ ॥

सप्तेन्दुभिर्व्याधिभयं दद्यात् धेनुं गुडं तथा ।
कलहोऽष्टेन्दुभिर्दद्याद् रत्नगोभूहिरण्यकम् ॥ २० ॥

अंकेन्दुभिः प्रवासः स्याच्छान्तिं कुर्याद् विधानतः ।
वंश बुद्धिनाशः स्याद् गणेशं तत्र पूजयेत् ॥ २१ ॥

रोगपीडैकविंशत्या दद्याद् धान्यस्य पर्वतम् ।
यमाश्विभिर्बन्धुपीडा दद्यादादर्शकं द्विज ! ॥ २२ ॥

त्रयोविंशतिसंयुक्ते मासे क्लेशमवाप्नुयात् ।
सौवर्णों प्रतिमां दद्याद्रवेः सप्तपलैर्बुधः ॥ २३ ॥

वेदाश्विभिर्बन्धुहीनो दद्याद् गोदशकं नृपः ।
सर्वरोगविनाशार्थं जपहोमादिकं चरेत् ॥ २४ ॥

धीहानिः पञ्चविंशत्या पूज्या वागीश्वरी तदा ।
षड्विंशत्याऽर्थहानिः स्यात् स्वर्णं दद्याद् विचक्षणः ॥ २५ ॥

तथा च सप्तविंशत्या श्रीसूक्तं तत्र संजपेत् ।
अष्टविंशतिसंयुक्ते मासे हानिश्च सर्वथा ॥ २६ ॥

सूर्यहोमश्च विधिना कर्त्तव्यः शुभकांक्षिभिः ।
एकोनत्रिंशता चापि चिन्ताव्याकुलितो भवेत् ॥ २७ ॥

घृतवस्त्रसुवर्णानि तत्र दद्यात् विचक्षणः ।
त्रिंशता पूर्णधान्याप्तिरिति जातकनिर्णयः ॥ २८ ॥

11-28: Samudaya Ashtakavarga, if contains 7 or less than 7 rekhas, there will be fear of death of the native in the same month (that is, in the month the Sun passes through said sign). For the purpose of propitiation (शान्ति) 20 Pala (Pala or Tola equivalent to 11.5 gms) Gold and 2 heaps of sesamum seeds (heap symbalizing mountain) should be given in charity.

If a sign is holding 8 Rekhas, there will be the chances of the death in that very month. For the alleviation of this affliction, 'Tuladana' of camphor (weighting equivalent to natives weight be undertaken.

If a sign is possessing 9 Rekhas, it will cause danger from the snakes in that solar month (Sun over such sign). To mitigate this ill effect, a chariot driven by four horses be donated in charity.

If a sign is holding 10 Rekhas, it will produce danger from weapons in that solar month, in order to mitigate the evil effects, an armour alongwith Vajra (weapon) should be given in charity.

O Vipra! when a sign secures 11 Rekhas, there will be possibility of getting disgraced in that (solar) month. For propitiation, an idol of the Moon (चन्द्रमा) made out of 10 Palas of gold be donated in charity.

The sign which is containing 12 Rekhas will cause danger of death by drowning in that (solar) month. The charity of (agricultural) land with the crop of the foodgrain to the Brahmins will confer auspicious effects.

The sign having 13 Rekhas will produce danger of death by the tiger (wild animals) in the (solar) month. In order to ward off the evil effects, an idol of Lord Vishnu (हिरण्यगर्भ विष्णु भगवान) be given in charity.

If a sign which is occupied with the 14 Rekhas, there will be danger of death in the solar month. For the propitiation, an idol of Varaha Moorti (वराहमूर्ति) made in gold be given in charity.

If a sign is containing 15 Rekhas, there will be danger from the king (authorities) in that Solar month. An elephant be donated in charity to get alleviation from this ill effect.

The sign which possesses 16 Rekhas, in the solar month of that sign, a great misfortune will be caused. A replica of Kalpa Vriksha (कल्प वृक्ष-A lengendry tree which fulfils desires) made in gold be given in charity which will ward off this evil effect.

The sign which contains 17 Rekhas, in the (solar) month of that sign, there will be danger from diseases. In order to get this affliction alleviated, a cow and jaggery be given in charity.

The sign which secures 18 Rekhas, the solar month of that sign will cause disputes (conflicts etc.). For propitiation, cow, gems, land and gold be denoted in chairty.

Positioning of 19 Rekhas in a sign will lead to residing in a foreign land (banishment from his homeland) in the (solar) month of such sign. Propitiations be performed with proper rituals to get relief.

Occupation of 20 Rekha in a sign will cause loss of intelligence (prudence) in the (solar) month of that sign. To atone the ill effect, Lord Ganesha be worshipped.

The sign with 21 Rekhas will produce disease and distress in the solar month of that sign. For the alleviation of such an evil effect, food grains in a heap form (structured as a replica of a mountain) be denoted in chairty.

The sign with 22 Rekhas will cause miseries to the brothers (of the natives) in the solar month of that sign. For the propitiation, a mirror be given in charity.

Positioning of 23 Rekhas in a sign will produce conflicts in the solar month of that sign. In order to mitigate this ill effect, an idol made in gold be given in charity.

In the solar month of a sign which is possessing 24 Rekhas, there will be loss of co-borns (death of brothers etc.). For the alleviation of such an evil effect, 10 cows should be given in charity and for getting relief from all the diseases, worship (Japa-जप) be performed.

The sign with 25 Rekhas will cause loss of prudence (wisdom) in the corresponding (solar) month of that sign. For the propitiation of this malefic effect, the Japa (जप) of Goddess Saraswati (सरस्वती) be performed.

The sign which is possessing 26 Rekhas, the corresponding solar month of that sign will cause loss of wealth. Japa of Shri Sookta (श्री सूक्त जप) be performed for the alleviation of such evil effects.

Positioning of 28 Rekhas in a sign will produce all round losses during the corresponding month (solar) of the sign. Havana (हवन) of the Sun with complete rituals be performed for seeking happiness.

The solar month of the sign securing 29 Rekhas will cause. anxiety over the worries. To ward off the evil effect, Ghee, clothes and gold be given in charity.

The sign which is possessed with 30 Rekha, that solar month of the sign will be full of prosperity and happiness.

त्रिंशाधिकामी रेखाभिर्धनपुत्रसुखाप्तयः ।
चत्वारिंशाधिकाभिश्च पुण्यश्रीरुपचीयते ॥ २९ ॥

29: Possessing more than 30 Rekhas [i.e., the sign having secured Rekhas in excess of 30, in the month (solar), Samvatsar (d) and Nakshatra] will confer accretion of wealth, children and happiness. If there are more than 40 Rekhas (in a sign), it will give boost to pious deeds, wealth (Laxmi - लक्ष्मी) and fame.

अष्टवर्गेण ये शुद्धास्ते शुद्धाः सर्वकर्मसु ।
अतोऽष्टवर्गसंशुद्धिरन्वेष्या सर्वकर्मसु ॥ ३० ॥

तावद् गोचरमन्वेष्यं यावन्न प्राप्यतेऽष्टकम् ।
अष्टवर्गे तु सम्प्राप्ते गोचरं विफलं भवेत् ॥ ३१ ॥

30-31 : A pure sign (auspicious sign) in the Ashtakavarga is deemed to be auspicious in all the works. Therefore, auspiciousness of the Ashtakavarga (Samudaya) be established for all the auspicious functions. The auspicious transiting position will only become necessary to be checked when auspicious (Samudaya) Ashtakavarga (sign of Ashtakavarga) is not available. Once the auspiciousness of the Ashtakavarga (sign) is ascertained, the sanctification of the transit (auspicious time of the transit) becomes redundant.
