BPHS Chapter 73 — LONGEVITY FROM ASHTAKAVARGA

अथात्रायुः प्रवक्ष्येऽहमष्टवर्गसमुद्भवम् ।
दिनद्वयं विरेखायां रेखायां सार्धवासरम् ॥ १ ॥

दिनमेकं द्विरेखायां त्रिरेखायां दिनार्धकम् ।
वेदतुल्यासु रेखासु सार्धसप्तदिनं स्मृतम् ॥ २ ॥

द्विवर्षं पञ्चरेखासु षड्खासु चतुःसमा ।
षड्वर्षं सप्तरेखासु वसवोऽष्टासु वत्सराः ॥ ३ ॥

एवं यदागतायुः स्यात् सर्वखेटसमुद्भवम् ।
तदर्धं स्फुटमायुः स्यादष्टवर्गभवं नृणाम् ॥ ४ ॥

Verse 1–4

1-4: The Sage Parasara said Now, I will explain the procedure of fixing the longevity through the use of Ashtakavarga (system). The Ashtakavarga's Ayu has been fixed as the sign bearing 'no' Rekha will get two days; sign with one Rekha is assigned one and a half days; with four Rekhas - seven and a half days; with five Rekhas - two years; with six Rekhas - four years; with seven Rekhas six years and the eight Rekhas will attribute 8 years of Ayu. In this manner, study the number of the Rekhas in all the signs of the Ashtakavargas of all the planets and total up the Ayu contributed by them. Half the sum will denote Ashtakavarga's Ayu (longevity).

Let us apply these basis of the working out the longevity on the Modle Example-89 which is being considered for the purpose of illustrating the various principles expounded by the Sage in the Ashtakavarga system. We would like to take the readers back to the tabulation of Ashtakavargas of various planets in Chapter-69 and would lift therefrom, the units of Rekhas secured by each sign in the Ashtakavarga of different planets. The Ashtakavarga Rekhaprada Chakra of the Sun is being taken up and the number of days etc. contributed by the each sign in this Ashtakavarga are drawn in the subsequent table showing the share of this planet in the total longevity of the native.

Similarly, the position of Rekhas is lifted from the B.A.V. Chart of the Moon and the other planets and Ayu' contributed by these planets has also been computed in the succeeding tables.

In order to ascertain longevity of the native, as described earlier, the Ashtakavarga's Ayus of all the planets including the Ascendant are to be totaled up and half the value of this sum will denote the Ayu (life span) of the native.
