97. PROPITIATION OF PLANETS FOR TRITARA (त्रीतर) BIRTHS

अथाऽन्यत् संप्रवक्ष्यामि जन्मदोषप्रदं द्विज ! ।
सुतत्रये सुताजन्म तत्त्रये सुतजन्म चेत् ॥ १ ॥

तदाऽरिष्टभयं ज्ञेयं पितृमातृकुलद्वये ।
तत्र शान्तिविधिं कुर्याद् वित्तशाठ्यविवर्जितः ॥ २ ॥

1-2: Maharishi Parasara said - O Vipra ! After this, I will now state the other kinds of afflictions caused to the Tritara (त्रितर) births. A birth of a daughter after three sons or a birth of a son after three daughters brings misfortune to his both paternal and material famlies. In that case the rituals of propitiation be undertaken bountifully.

सूतकान्तेऽथ वा शुद्धे समये च शुभे दिने ।
आचार्यमृत्विजो वृत्वा ग्रहयज्ञपुरस्सरम् ॥ ३ ॥

ब्रह्म-विष्णु महेशेन्द्र- प्रतिमाः स्वर्णजाः शुभाः ।
पूजयेद् धान्यराशिस्थ-कलशोपरि भक्तितः ॥ ४ ॥

3-4 : After the completion of the period of Sutaka (सूतक - 10 days after the birth) select an Acharya (आचार्य - Priest) and Brahmin. Place the Kalashas over the heaps of paddy and install elegant idols of Bramha, Vishnu, Mehesha and Indra on it and perform worship with complete devoutness.

चत्वारि रुद्रसूक्तानि शान्तिसूक्तानि सर्वशः ।
विप्र एको जपेद् होमकाले च शुचिसंयतः ॥ ५ ॥

आचार्यो जुहुयात्तत्र समिदाज्यतिलांश्चरुम् ।
अष्टोत्तरं सहस्रं वा शतं वाऽष्टौ च विंशतिम् ॥ ६ ॥

ब्रह्मादिसर्वदेवेभ्यः स्वस्व - गृह्योक्तमन्त्रतः ।
ततः स्विष्टकृतं हुत्वा बलिं पूर्णाहुतिं पुनः ॥ ७ ॥

अभिषेकं च जातस्य सकुटुम्बस्य कारयेत् ।
ऋत्विग्भ्यो दक्षिणां दद्याद्ब्राह्मणांश्चापि भोजयेत् ॥ ८ ॥

कांस्याज्यवीक्षणं कृतवा दीनानाथांश्च तर्पयेत् ।
एवं शान्त्या च मैत्रेय ! सर्वारिष्टं विलीयते ॥ ९ ॥

5-9 At the time of Havana (हवन), one Brahmin after purifying himself should undertake Japa (जप) for Rudra Suktas (रुद्र सूक्त) and the entire Shanti Sukta (शान्ति सूक्त). Acharya, thereafter should perform the Havana with wood pieces (समिधा), Ghee (घी), Sesamum seeds (तिल), Charu (चर) for 1008, 108 or 28 times amidst the recitation of Mantras relating to Bramha, Vishu, Mehesha and Indra and the final oblation (पूर्णाहुति) be given in favour of devoted deity (इष्ट देवता).

Thereafter, the child be given Abhisheka alongwith his entire family followed by presenting of gifts to the priest and Brahmins be fed. After this, they should see there reflections in the Ghee kept in a copper vessel and gifts be distributed amongst the poors. With these propitiatory measures, all kinds of afflictions will get alleviated.
