Week 9 · Unit 3 · Timing - The Dasha Systems

Milestone 3 of 3: Learning to read a repetitive chapter

Reading Parashara's Antardaśā Method

Chapter 54 read closely as the model chapter — because learning its generating logic makes the other eight readable on sight.

Reading: BPHS 54About 127 min

Assumes you have done: Week 8 unit 4 — the house-lord method, which these chapters assume throughout

Why this matters

Chapters 54 to 62 are thirty-eight thousand words of Antardaśā results. Nobody memorises them and nobody should try. But they are not arbitrary: every entry is generated by the same small set of factors, and once you can see the generator you can read any of the nine chapters correctly the first time you open it. This unit close-reads one chapter to extract that generator. It is the single most valuable reading skill in the whole of Volume 2.

Learn

Thirty-eight thousand words are coming. This unit is how you survive them.

The problem, stated honestly

Chapters 54 to 62 give the Antardaśā results for each of the nine Mahādaśās. Nine chapters, nine sub-periods each, every one with favourable and unfavourable treatments and a set of conditions.

Nobody memorises this. Nobody should try. And skipping it would mean skipping the material that timing interpretation actually runs on.

The way out is to notice that these chapters are not arbitrary. Every entry is generated by a small set of factors, and once you can see the generator you can read any of the nine chapters correctly the first time you open it.

So: read Chapter 54 closely, extract the generator, and use it on the rest.

The generator

Read Chapter 54’s opening and ask, of each clause, what is Parashara reasoning from?

Verse 1. If the Sun is exalted, or posited in its own sign, the 11th house, angles or trines, there will be gain of wealth and food grains… Reverse will be the results if the Sun is in debilitation, inauspicious sign etc. The Sun being the lord of the 2nd or the 7th house, it will…

Three factors in one verse: dignity, house placement, lordship.

Verses 4–6. In the running Mahādaśā of the Sun with the Moon Antardaśā, if the Moon is posited in the Ascendant, angles or trines… — placement again.

Verses 7–10. A weak Moon, if having conjunction with the malefic planets… — strength and conjunction.

Verses 11–14. If there are benefic planets in the 11th or the 8th and in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house from the lord of the Mahādaśā…

There it is. That last one is the factor specific to Antardaśā reading.

So the generator is five inputs:

  1. The Antardaśā lord’s dignity
  2. Its house placement from the Lagna
  3. Its position from the Mahādaśā lord
  4. Its lordships, especially of the 2nd or 7th
  5. Its conjunctions and aspects

Every entry in all nine chapters is a combination of those five. Write them down and keep them beside you.

The move that is genuinely new

Factor three is what makes an Antardaśā more than a shorter Mahādaśā.

You count houses twice: once from the Lagna, as always, and once from the Mahādaśā lord.

Verses 11 to 14 make this explicit. Benefics in the 11th or 8th from the Mahādaśā lord, or in a Kendra from it, give one set of results. The Moon in the 6th, 8th or 12th from the Mahādaśā lord, and powerless, gives another.

That is the relationship between the two active periods, expressed geometrically.

Derive, then verify

The exercise that makes this stick, and it is the same one Chapter 26 used in Week 4.

Take a case. Say Saturn’s Antardaśā in a Sun Mahādaśā, with Saturn well placed. Before reading the text, run the generator: Saturn’s dignity, its house, its position from the Sun, its lordships, its aspects. Write what you expect.

Then read Parashara’s entry.

You will usually get the direction right and miss the specifics. That is the correct result and it is what the exercise is for. The direction is what lets you read fast; the specifics are why you read the source at all. And where the text says something your derivation could not have produced, that is exactly the material worth noting.

Do this six or seven times in Chapter 54 and the generator becomes automatic.

What these chapters assume

One practical warning. The timing chapters assume the natal doctrine and do not restate it.

Verse 13–14 refers to the Antardaśā of the 2nd or 7th lord causing fear of death. That is Chapter 46’s Māraka doctrine, from Week 7, arriving without introduction and without its qualifications repeated.

Which means a reader who came to these chapters without Modules 2 to 4 cannot use them properly — they will read the Māraka clause without the conditions that Chapter 46 attaches to it. You have those conditions. Apply them.

Whose words are these

The target

State it precisely, because it is the outcome of Weeks 9 and 10 together:

You should be able to open any of the nine Antardaśā chapters and read it correctly the first time.

Not recall its contents. Read it — decompose an entry into its five factors, apply it to the chart in front of you, and know which parts are Parashara’s.

That is a higher competence than having memorised a fraction of one chapter, and it is the only thing that makes thirty-eight thousand words tractable inside a twelve-week course.

The next unit tests whether the generator actually holds.

Read BPHS

This is the source itself. The teaching above prepares you for it; it does not replace it.

While you read, watch for: Read this chapter properly — slowly, with a pen. For each Antardaśā, note what Parashara is reasoning *from*. There are only about five kinds of input and you should be able to list them by the end.

Verse 1–3

1-3: If the Sun is exalted, or posited in its own sign, the 11th house, Angles (Kendras) or Trines (Trikonas), there will be gain of wealth and food grains in the Antardasa of the Mahadasa of the Sun. Reverse will be the results if the Sun is in debilitation, inauspicious sign etc. The Sun being the lord of the 2nd or the 7th house, it will cause apprehension of early death. In order to guard against these ill effects, "Mrityunjaya Japa" be recited (or have it done through some one). Undertaking the worship and other religious observance of the Sun, will bestow good health.

स्वैः स्वैः पुष्ठफला निर्सगजीनतैः पक्तिर्दशायाः क्रमादन्ते ----------- ॥

It goes on to say that commencing from the time of birth, one year will belong to the Moon, followed by 2 years to Venus, 18 years to Jupiter, 20 years to the Sun and thereafter 50 years are the natural period for Saturn. The natural Dasa years has great bearings on the Vimshottari Dasa system. At the time of operation of a particular Dasa in the life span, if the lord of natural Dasa is also become lord of the Mahadasa, the related events of the said Dasa are bound to occur.

v)The lord of Angles or Trines if happened to be a Yoga Karaka, it will render good results. However before deciding the aspect of Yogakaraka, we have to consider the Ascendants of the Moon and the Sun. Apart from being birth Ascendants, if a planet which gets approved as Yogakaraka planet in these two Ascendants, it will be highly capable of producing auspicious results than the Yogkaraka planets without it. Infact, the selection of the Yogakaraka planet in this manner, will certainly bring avout wealth, status, Success etc.

vi)Compound relationship of the planet (Panchdha Maitri Chakra) plays a great role in ascertaining the results of the Antardasas. Suppose the Antardasa of Saturn in the Mahadasa of the Sun is in operation and as per the compound relationship of the nativity, Saturn is a bitter enemy of the Sun, then Saturn inspite of being a Yogakaraka planet will not give that much good resuits in its Antardasa. Further, an inimical sub-period lord degrades the results of the Mahadasa in its Antardasa period. For example, the Antardasa of Rahu in the main period of the Moon, brings mental tension, develops irritable behaviour, loses vitality etc., regardless of whether Rahu draws good or bad influences on the Moon.

vii)Whenever two planets whose main and sub-periods have come to operate and they are enemy to the lord of a particular house, the said house will certainly receive adverse affects relating to the significance of the house. The auspicious positions of the lords of the Mahadasa and Antardasa will, on the otherhand, boost up the good results.

viii)Lord of Antardasa does influence the lord of the Mahadasa even though they may not have any connections. However, if they do have one, the effect will be more pronounced.

ix)In the event of Antardasa and Mahadasa being of one planet, this planet will have the prerogative of shaping the events in its Antardasaa. If such planet is strong and belongs to an auspicious house, the good results are heightened and in a contrary situation, it will have dampening effects.

x)Antardasa of a retrogade planet whether benefic or malefic, does cause delay, uncertainty, change etc.

xi)The planet being exalted, in Mooltrikona or in own sign, having high Shadabala rating, high benefic points in Astakvarga and if not combust or in an infancy stage or of old age but located in the middle cusp and having benefic ‘Avasthas’, it will produce excellent results.

xii)Ista, Kashta Balas of a planet should invariably be determined because, Maharishi Parasara has saidvery clearly that the auspicious and inauspicious results of a Mahadasa should be ascertained only on these basis.

xiii)More the number of benefic connections exist between the lords of the houses in a horoscope, the greater degree of favourable results will be promised.

xiv)If the natural benefic planets go into the malefic Vargas (Divisions), it loses the beneficence. Conversely, if malefic planets occupy more of the benefic Vargas (Divisional Charts), it will gain benefic potency. The Vargas of own sign, exaltation sign, signs of the benefic planets are considered good positions in the divisional charts. While the positions of debilitated sign, enemy sign, signs of the malefic planets etc. are in bad locations in the chart and will spoil the good effects.

xv)While analysing the effects of the Antardasa, the transiting positions of the planets should carefully be examined before arriving at any conclusion.

Shodasa Varga 12.97

Balance of Dasa at birth : Venus 0 year, 3 months, 25 days.

In the Anatardasa of the Sun in Sun’s Mahadasa, i.e. between 30- 5-1963 and 16-9-1963, the child had undergone operation for cutting the string attached between the tongue and the lower Jaw because this extended flesh was creating problems for the child. The Sun is in the 2nd house alongwith Ketu and Saturn (bitter enemy) receiving the malefic aspects of Mars and Rahu. The Sun is in Kumara and Khala Avasthas and also having aspects of Saturn in Trimsamsa chart. The Karaka for mouth is Venus which is in the Nakshatra of Ketu and Ketu is occupying the place of mouth in Trimsamsa. Incidentally, the Sun is connected with Saturn in most of the divisional charts. The ‘Kashta Bala’ of the Sun is 35. 10 and therefore, this is an indicator of imposing trouble as per its situation and has as such, caused the disease signified by the 2nd house i.e., mouth. This was followed by a disease in the eye. Here again affliction of the 2nd. house caused this disease because 2nd house also represents eye.

The Dwadamsa represent parents. In the divisional chart, the Sun is in the 9th house and is in its own sign. The Sun has more than the required strength in Shadbala. The Sun is in “Prakasha” Avastha, which promises abundant wealth. Inthis duration viz., in the Antardasa of the Sun andin Sun’s main period, the native's father had acquired sizable amount of wealth.

However, the moot point is that the Sun inspite of being the lord of the 9th house had caused trouble to the native in its Antardasa and the main reason for this divergent resultis that the Sun acquired different type of odd situations created by the varied combinations.

The Sun is the Karaka forbones. The Pisces sign and 12th house represent feet. When the Sun being the lord of the 6th House posited in the 12th house and Jupiter lord of 12th is not in a good house and both the Sun and Jupiter are also having other malefic influences, there by creating chances of fracture etc., to the feet in the period of the Sun. This aspect will get amply clarified through an example appended below :

The Sun being the lord of the 6th house is situated in the Ascendant which represents body with affliction. Here the sign signifies the feet. The malefic Saturn is quite strong in Shadbala and aspects Sun along with Mars which undoubtedly is not good for the body. The Sun not only having aspects from its stauch enemy Saturn but also is in Saturn’s Nakshatra. The Antardasa and also the Mahadasa of the Sun was running from 26.10.1993 to 12.2.1994. In this period, one foot of the native got crushed due to fall of heavy weight and bones of the foot suffered multi-fracture. The Shayana Avastha of the Sun is also responsible for this suffering because Sage Parasara has very clearly stated in the aphorism that if the Sun is passing through the Shayana Avastha, the feet of the native will get affected.

Verse 4–6

4-6 : In the running Mahadasa of the Sun with the Moon Antardasa, if the Moon is posited in the Ascendant, Angles or Trines, the marriage or other auspicious functions will take place and one gets fame through wealth and prosperity, growth in land and property and gratifying feelings with the acquisitions of vehicles, animals and other assets. If the Moon occupies own or exalted sign, woman's affection, gain of wealth is caused and happiness of son's birth, King's recognition and blessings, contentment over the attainment of desired objectives, will also be the results.

If the Antardasa's lord is also the lord of the 2nd house and occupies 11th or any other good house, the native will have good gain of wealth during this period. He will also acquire fixed assets of the kind which will be useful for his children. An example related to this aspect, is illustrated as under :

In this duration, the elder brother of the native who had no issue, but had abundant wealth and immovable property in the form of agriculture land which was to be inherited by the native's sons as per the 'will' of his brother. The 2nd house signifies parental property and this house also represents the elder brother's immovable property being the 4th house from the 11th house. The house of wealth of the elder brother (2nd from 11th) has the lordship of Venus which is posited in the 2nd house of the native. Therefore, the liquid cash, Jewellery etc., was inherited by the native.

Since the Sun is posited in the 2nd house (Wealth) in the sign of the Moon, situated in the 11th house (gain) whose dispositor Mars (brother) is in conjunction with Venus (lord the house of wealth of the elder brother) also having the aspects of Jupiter, these results got fructified in the Main period of the Sun and sub-period of the Moon.

With the acquisition of the assets, the native had been taken to a high status in the society. This factor is quite evident from Dasamsa Chart where the Moon is posited in the Ascendant and in its own sign.

In the Antardasa of the 2nd and the 7th lord will cause fear of death in the early age. In that event, to alleviate the evil effects of the Moon and gain happiness, white cow and female buffalo be donated in charity.

The conjunction of the 9th or the 11th lord, gain of wealth, post of commander, (very high position in the hierarchy), vanquishing the enemy, undaunted courage, spiritual happiness, regards from friends and all kinds of help and happiness from the co-borns, will be the effect.

37-39: If Jupiter is posited at the 6th or the 8th place from the Mahadasa lord, debilitated or conjunct with the malefic planets, its Antardasa will result in sufferings of wife and children, some bodily disease and will also experience intensive fear. It will also cause persecution by the King (Government), loss of some dear ones and precious things and also unserupulously acquisition of assets, sufferings from a chronic disease, mental agony etc. In order to ward off such evil effects of Jupiter, donation of gold, cow (Kapila) and recitation of Mantras of devoted deity (Ishta Devta) be resorted to which will bring sound health.

To mitigate these ill effects, one should donate black cow, buffalo (female), goat in charity and undertake the Japa of Mrityunjaya. With these acts of seeking propitiation, happiness and prosperity could be restored.

Read Chapter 54's opening verses. What factors is Parashara reasoning from?

Write your answer down before opening the explanation.

Show the answer and why

Answer: The Antardaśā planet's dignity and house placement; its position counted from the Mahādaśā lord; its lordship, especially of the 2nd or 7th; its conjunctions and aspects; and the strength of both planets.

Five inputs, and every one of them is something you have been able to assess since Week 5. Verse 1 conditions on the Sun being exalted, in its own sign, in the 11th, in an angle or a trine — dignity and placement. Then it adds the Sun being the lord of the 2nd or the 7th house — lordship. Verses 11–14 condition on the Moon's position from the Mahādaśā lord, which is the factor specific to Antardaśā reading and the one people miss.

Comparison · 2

What does Antardaśā reading add that Mahādaśā reading did not?

Write your answer down before opening the explanation.

Show the answer and why

Answer: The relationship between the two lords — the Antardaśā planet's position and dignity relative to the Mahādaśā planet, not only relative to the Lagna.

This is the genuinely new idea in the chapter and it is the reason Antardaśās are not simply shorter Mahādaśās. Verses 11–14 make it explicit: benefics in the 11th or 8th from the Mahādaśā lord, or in a Kendra from it, give one set of results; the Moon in the 6th, 8th or 12th from the Mahādaśā lord and powerless gives another. So you count houses twice — once from the Lagna and once from the Mahādaśā lord.

Application · 3

Using the generator alone, predict what Chapter 54 will say about the Saturn Antardaśā in a Sun Mahādaśā when Saturn is well placed. Then check.

Write your answer down before opening the explanation.

Show the answer and why

Answer: A prediction along the lines of: gains and stability through effort, recognition from established structures, with the Sun's authority expressed through Saturn's endurance — favourable but slow.

Check against the text. You will usually get the direction right and miss the specifics, which is exactly what the exercise is for. The specifics are why you read the source; the direction is what lets you read it fast and read the eight chapters you will not close-read at all.

Interpretation · 4

Verse 13–14 mentions that in the Antardaśā of the 2nd or 7th lord there is fear of death in early age, and then suggests something be done to alleviate it. What is going on there?

Write your answer down before opening the explanation.

Show the answer and why

Answer: The Māraka doctrine from Chapter 46 appearing inside the Antardaśā material, with a remedial suggestion attached.

Two things to note. First, the timing chapters assume the natal doctrine — Māraka identification, Chapter 46's qualifications, longevity bands — and do not restate it. So a reader who skipped Week 7 cannot use these chapters properly. Second, the remedial suggestion is the first appearance in the timing material of something you meet properly in Week 12: BPHS routinely pairs a difficult indication with a prescribed response.

These chapters carry heavy translator's notes. What does the Volume 2 preface say about them, and why does it matter here more than elsewhere?

Write your answer down before opening the explanation.

Show the answer and why

Answer: That the notes cover the versions of other learned astrologers — Varāhamihira, Kalyāṇavarmā, Mantreśvara — and the translator's own experience. It matters here because this is the largest block of non-Parashara material presented inside BPHS chapters.

Which means a reader working through Chapters 54 to 62 is reading at least three different authorities on the same page: Parashara's verses, other classical authors cited, and the translator's practice. All three can be useful. Presenting any of the latter two as Parashara's own statement is the specific failure the course's labelling exists to prevent, and it is most likely to happen here.

Einstein's Sun Mahādaśā ran from 1916 to 1922 — six years, so its Antardaśās are short and there are real events documented inside it. That makes it the natural chart for reading Chapter 54 against something.

  1. Build the Antardaśā sequence for Chart B's Sun Mahādaśā, 1916–1922, by hand.
  2. For each Antardaśā lord, note three things from your chart sheets: its dignity, its house position counted from the Sun (not from the Lagna), and what it rules.
  3. Now use the generator rather than the text. For three of the Antardaśās, predict what Chapter 54 will say, using only the factors you have just listed.
  4. Then read Chapter 54's actual entries for those three and compare. Where you were close, the generator is working. Where the text added something you could not have derived, write down what kind of thing it was.
  5. The natal-promise step: before saying anything about the events of this period, write down what this chart promises in the areas the Sun rules and occupies. Then, and only then, look at the timeline.

Check your understanding

Answer from memory first. Looking back at the reading before you try turns a memory test into a copying exercise.

Recall · 1

List the five factors that generate an Antardaśā result.

Write your answer down before opening the explanation.

Show the answer and why

Answer: The Antardaśā lord's dignity; its house placement from the Lagna; its position from the Mahādaśā lord; its lordships; and its conjunctions and aspects.

Write these down and keep them beside you while reading Chapters 55 to 62. Every entry in all nine chapters is a combination of these five. Once you can decompose an entry into its factors, you can also recompose one for a case the text handles tersely.

Understanding · 2

Why is counting houses from the Mahādaśā lord the distinctive move of Antardaśā reading?

Write your answer down before opening the explanation.

Show the answer and why

Answer: Because it is the only factor that expresses the relationship between the two active periods rather than each one separately.

And it is the re-anchoring idea one more time — a temporary reference point, this time a planet rather than a lagna or a sign. By Week 9 you should be recognising this move immediately whenever it appears. It has now turned up in Chapters 6, 8, 34, 35, 52 and 54.

Interpretation · 3

A reader opens Chapter 58 having never seen it and needs to read a Jupiter Mahādaśā/Venus Antardaśā entry correctly. What do they need?

Write your answer down before opening the explanation.

Show the answer and why

Answer: The five generating factors, and the ability to locate the entry — which is by Antardaśā lord in cycle order within the chapter.

That is the whole target competence of Weeks 9 and 10, and it is worth stating as a specific claim: you should be able to open any of the nine Antardaśā chapters and read it correctly on first sight. That is a higher competence than having memorised a fraction of one of them, and it is what makes thirty-eight thousand words tractable in two weeks.

Find it in BPHS · 4

Which Mahādaśā does each of Chapters 54 to 62 cover?

Write your answer down before opening the explanation.

Show the answer and why

Answer: 54 Sun, 55 Moon, 56 Mars, 57 Rahu, 58 Jupiter, 59 Saturn, 60 Mercury, 61 Ketu, 62 Venus.

That is the Viṁśottarī cycle order starting from the Sun, which is also the order of verse 15 in Chapter 48. Knowing the mapping means you go straight to the chapter you need without checking a contents page.

What you carry forward

Two things grow across the whole course. This unit adds to both.

To your chart-analysis process

  • **Step 12 (continued).** For an Antardaśā, read: the Antardaśā lord's dignity and placement; its position FROM THE MAHĀDAŚĀ LORD; its lordships; its conjunctions and aspects. Both lords contribute.

See the process so far →

To your field manual

  • The five factors generating an Antardaśā result: the Antardaśā lord's dignity; its house from the Lagna; its house FROM THE MAHĀDAŚĀ LORD; its lordships, especially the 2nd and 7th; its conjunctions and aspects.
  • Antardaśā chapters by Mahādaśā lord: 54 Sun, 55 Moon, 56 Mars, 57 Rahu, 58 Jupiter, 59 Saturn, 60 Mercury, 61 Ketu, 62 Venus. Within each, entries run in cycle order.
  • Counting from the Mahādaśā lord is the move specific to Antardaśā reading. Count houses twice: from the Lagna and from the Mahādaśā lord.
  • The timing chapters ASSUME the natal doctrine — Mārakas, longevity bands, functional nature — and do not restate it.
  • Ch. 54–62 carry the largest block of non-Parashara material in BPHS: other classical authors and the translator's own practice, per the Vol. 2 preface. Check what you are reading before citing it.

See the field manual →

By now you should be able to

  • Name the factors that generate an Antardaśā result in Parashara's treatment
  • Read a Chapter 54 entry and identify which factor each clause rests on
  • Predict what the text will say about a case, then verify
  • Distinguish Parashara's verses from the translator's notes in these chapters
