What it is for
BPHS 68.5–6: the results of this system will neither contradict nor repeat the results propounded earlier.
A claim to independence. Aṣṭakavarga reasons from counting, where everything else reasons from lordship, dignity and placement. That is what makes agreement meaningful and disagreement informative — and it is why it belongs after a natal judgment rather than before one.
Construction — BPHS 68.16–19
Eight contributors: the seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn, plus the Lagna. The nodes do not contribute.
Each casts a bindu on specified houses counted from its own position, according to a table that differs for each planet’s chart. A sign’s count is how many of the eight marks land on it — 0 to 8.
The image: each planet votes on each sign, from where it stands.
The three reductions
| Reduction | Chapter | What it removes |
|---|---|---|
| Trikoṇa Śodhana | 69 | support common to signs in mutual trine — subtract the lowest of the three from all three, leaving the differential |
| Ekādhipatya Śodhana | 70 | double-counting where one planet rules two signs. Applies only to the five double-rulers |
| Piṇḍa Śodhana | 71 | final consolidation to the figure Ch. 72 interprets |
Reduced figures are systematically lower and more spread than raw ones and contain zeros. That is how you tell which table you are looking at — software configurations differ on whether reductions are applied by default.
Sarvāṣṭakavarga — BPHS 74
Sum the reduced counts of all seven planets, sign by sign.
The twelve totals always sum to 337. Average per sign, about 28.
| Threshold | Reading |
|---|---|
| above 30 rekhas | medium results |
| below 25 rekhas | distressful results |
| between | middling |
Note that 30 is medium, not excellent — the thresholds sit close on either side of the mean. What deserves attention is the spread across twelve houses, not any single figure.
Relative reading (74.7–8) is often more informative than absolute: the 11th higher than the 10th, the 12th lower than the 11th, and a high Lagna indicates fortune and wealth. Inflow exceeding action, outflow below inflow, a strong self.
Three built-in self-checks
- Each planet’s twelve counts total a fixed figure, the same in every chart.
- Reduced tables contain zeros; raw tables do not.
- The Sarvāṣṭakavarga totals sum to 337.
Chapters 68 to 74 carry one continuous worked example and the chapters interlock — a damaged figure early propagates silently through all seven. These checks are the defence.
Reading interpretively — BPHS 72
A planet’s Aṣṭakavarga speaks to that planet’s subjects (72.1–6), following the kārakas of Ch. 34:
| Planet | Its Aṣṭakavarga speaks to |
|---|---|
| Sun | soul, nature, physical strength, father |
| Moon | mind, wisdom, happiness, mother |
| Mars | co-borns, valour, qualities, land |
| Mercury | business, sources of livelihood |
| Jupiter | knowledge, children, expansion |
| Venus | partnership, pleasure, vehicles |
| Saturn | longevity, labour, endurance |
So a sign well supported in Jupiter’s table and poorly in Mars’s is favourable for Jupiter’s matters and less so for Mars’s. Not a contradiction — different subjects. Sarvāṣṭakavarga is what legitimately combines them.
Transits — BPHS 72.7–11
A planet transiting a sign with a high bindu count in its own Aṣṭakavarga fares better than one transiting a low-count sign.
Saturn dominates the chapter for a practical reason: its transit through a sign lasts about two and a half years, comparable in scale to an Antardaśā. Fast transits pass in days.
A transit judgment is a modifier on a natal promise, exactly as a daśā is.
BPHS does not develop a systematic transit doctrine — no Vedha, no general Gochara. This is the method it does give.
Longevity from Aṣṭakavarga — BPHS 73
A fourth instrument, alongside Chapter 45’s Piṇḍāyu, Aṁśāyu and Naisargāyu.
Not a fourth estimate to average. An independently founded measure: where it clusters with the other three the chart speaks firmly; where it scatters it does not.
The output remains a band and a confidence, never a date.
What it does and does not measure
Aṣṭakavarga measures support, not outcome.
- Strong lord + low Sarvāṣṭakavarga = a capable agent with little backing.
- Weak lord + high Sarvāṣṭakavarga = strong backing, weak agent.
Both are real configurations, recognisable in real lives, and neither is derivable from the other. That is exactly the independence Chapter 68 claimed.
When it disagrees with your natal judgment
Four possible outcomes. Name which one you think it is:
- The judgment was wrong.
- The instruments are measuring different things.
- Both are right and the chart contains a tension. Most common.
- Not addressed — the instrument does not speak to that claim. Routinely mistaken for confirmation.
