99. HORARY SYSTEM

श्रुतं महर्षे ! निखिलं यदुक्तं कृपया त्वया ।
इदानीं वक्तुमुचितं प्रश्नैरेव तु जन्मिनाम् ॥ १ ॥

भावं मनोगतं वाऽपि पथिकागमनादिकम् ।
स्त्रीपुत्रयोर्लाभहानी मरणं जीवनं तथा ॥ २ ॥

रोगिणामेतदखिलं कृपया वद मे प्रभो ।
त्वामन्तरा नचान्योऽस्ति कश्चित्तत्त्वविशारदः ॥ ३ ॥

1-3 : Maitreya said, O Maharishi - I have carefully listened to what all you have said but kindly enlighten me how to predict the subject like state of mind, movements of the travellers, marriage, birth and the loss of a child, recovery or the death of a patient etc., through queries (Horary System of Astrology).

अथ ब्रवीमि ते विप्र ! यथाभिलषितं तब ।
प्रश्नांगतो भवेत् सर्व ज्ञेयं तच्छृणु यत्नतः ॥ ४ ॥

भावैर्विचार्य विषयान् जानीयात् प्राग् बुधस्ततः ।
बलाऽबलविवेकेन शुभाशुभफलं दिशेत् ॥ ५ ॥

4-5 : Sage Parasara said, O Brahmin ! As desired by you, now I would explain how to forecast every thing through queries. Kindly listen with full attention. The savants first of all, should know the subject matters related to the houses and thereafter, they should explain auspiciousness and inauspiciousness about the houses.

स्वरूपलक्षणं प्रश्न- कर्तु दुःखसुखे तनोः ।
रत्नानां लाभहानी तु धनस्थानाद् विचिन्तयेत् ॥ ६ ॥

पराकमं भ्रातृ मृत्य सुखवं सहजभावतः ।
मित्रालयग्राममातृ-वाहनानां सुखं सुखात् ॥ ७ ॥

अपत्यमतिशास्त्राणि चिन्तयेत् पंचमालयात् ।
शत्रुमातुलरागांस्तु व्रणानपि रिपोस्तथा ॥ ८ ॥

विवादस्त्रीवणिग्रवृत्ति-गमनागमनानि वै ।
सप्तमान् मृत्युभावाच्च मृत्युं युद्धं च रूग्भयम् ॥ ९ ॥

वापीदेवालयादीनां निर्माणं नवमालयात् ।
राज्यं पितृसुखं राज़-कर्म चिन्त्यं पितुर्गृहात् ॥ १० ॥

कन्याकांचनसस्यानि वाहनानि च लाभतः ।
व्ययतो रिपुरोधंच व्ययं भोगादिकर्मसु ॥ ११ ॥

6 - 11 : The Assendant (1st house) denotes features of the querist, grief, happiness etc. and consider gain or loss of gems (wealth) from the 2nd house; valour, brothers (co-borns) and comforts of servants from the 3rd house; friends, house, village or town, mother and comforts of vehicles from the 4th house; pregnancy, wisdom, scholarly pursuits from the 5th house; enemy, maternal uncle, disease injury from the 6th house; grief, wife, business, travellings from the 7th house; death, battles (conflicts), disease, frightfulness from the 8th house; digging of pond, well and temple from the 9th house; kingdom, happiness of father, king's or government affairs from the 10th house; agricultural produce and vehicles from the 11th house; hindrances by the enemies, sexual relationship, expenditure should be considered from the 12th house.

The First House : rules beauty of the body, health, state of querist, fame, welfare, victory, body appearance (Prasna Marga); worship, quality, behaviour, longevity, state of an object, caste, innocence, symptom, colour, wife of the sister's son (Daivagya Vallabha). In addition, features, conflicts, valour, rise and fall, astraying from the right path etc. should also be considered from the 1st house.

The Second House : denotes eating and drinking provisions, speech, right eye, various types of arts and learnings (Prasna Marga); dealings with pearls, metal, clothes, gold, horses etc. trading in food and silver (Daivagya Vallabha). Besides, query related to family, attraction towards woman, sale and purchase, conflicts related to sales tax matters, work connected with road etc. should also be answered from the 2nd house.

The Third House : governs patience, imprudence, right ear assistant (Prasha Marga); daughter-in-law, welfare, safety, prudence (Daivagya Vallabha). In addition, soldiers, industry, efforts, short journeys, nearby voyage, work as servant, enterprises etc., should also be considered from the 3rd house.

The Fourth House : signifies maternal uncle, sister's son, agricultural field, a seat, charm, water, white colour, accretion, pet animals, mother land (Prasna Marga); under ground treasure, entry into the cave, medicine, crops, gardens, frequenting, loss of place, gains, entering the house, parents, country's affairs and gains therefrom (Daivagya Vallabha). Besides, patent medicines, rituals for the deceased forefathers, going out of the house, pleasure of staying in one's own country, progress, digging of reservoir and mine, mortgage, agricultural produce etc. may also be considered from the 4th house.

The Fifth House : denotes sharp intellect, acumen, wisdom, discretion, pious deeds of previous birth, mantras, minister, mental satisfaction (Prasna Marga): diplomacy, agreement or treaty, pregnancy, wealth etc. (Daivagya Vallabha). Besides, from the 5th house queries related to practicing of Vedas and occultism, literature concerning hymns, customs and traditions, comprehensive knowledge (all known 64 divisions of Vedic knowledge), spiritual knowledge, study of physics, disciple, religious, practicing Matra, Yantra and Tantra, spaculation, lottery. diplomacy, consullations, etc., be answered.

The Sixth House : rules thief, hindrances, mental and physical troubles, death through weapons, (Prasna Marga); ill health, destitution, servant, evil deeds, aggressive actions, fatal assault of weapons by the enemises, suspicion, battle, animals like buffalo etc. (Daivagya Vallabha). In addition, the queries of killing, attraction, disliking etc., employing spells with malevolent purpose, dispute opposition, thief, litigation, fire incidents, accidents, injury, captivity, bull, donkey, camel, explosion, conspiracy, arson, etc., and also house of maternal grand parents be considered from the 6th house.

The Seventh House : denotes marriage, sexual relationship between man and woman, bed, house, loss of wealth through theft (Prasna Marga); health, purchases, servant, return from the journey (Dalvagya Vallabha). The other queries like, business disputes, daily business engagements, love, attraction, romance, works related to film, lost item, love disputes, girl's first enterance into the house after marriage, sea voyage, selection of trade, business transactions, theft articles, oblivion, excitement, enjoyment of co-habitation etc., also be considered from the 7th house.

The Eight House : governs destruction, calamity, dispute, cause and place of death, imprisonment, monastry or student hostel, disease, obstacles and hindrances (Prasna Marga); longevity, opposition, secrets of the kingdom (Government), weaknesses of relatives, difficult places, fort, killing of enemy and wife, crossing the river (Daivagya Vallabha). In addition, the queries related to obstruction in sea voyage, snake, scorpion or dog bite, sudden accident, haunted by evil spirits, debts, wound through weapon, bad omen, back biting, foul languge, about the deceased bequest, ups and downs, quarrel evil acts etc. also be considered from the 8th house.

The Ninth House : signifies fortune, religion, sympathy, pious deeds, penance, father, charity, austerity, preceptor (Prasna Marga); imitiation, temple of devoted deity, pilgrimage, coronation, religious pursuits, digging of water tanks, brother-in-law (Davagya Vallabha).. From the same house, queries relating spintual teachings, religious and social works, trust, progress, fame, favour of the King and Goddess, etc., be also tackled,

The Tenth House : rules temple, town, auditorium, rest house enroute, drinking and eating places, permission, livelihood (Prasna Marga); attraction, rain, commendation of father's work and position, pious deed, fall in authority, currency and change of position (Daivagya Vallabha). Besides, from this house, the queries related to climate, social and public places, capital, social status, honoured with title, reception, decoration, foreign travelling, etc., could as well be answered.

The Eleventh House : denotes accomplishment of all the desired objectives, elder brother and sisters, infant, left ear (Prasna Marga). Besides, progress in the business, gain from the investments, elephant, horses, conveyance etc., clothes, theft of gold and wealth, scholarly conversation on worldly matters, logic, etc., be considered from the 11th house.

The Twelth House : governs evil act, losses, left eye, fall from the position, failures, (Prasna Marga); enjoyment, marriage, charity, loss of crops, uncle, witnessing the battle and the thought of defeat in the battle (Daivagya Vallabha). From this house matters like, punishment, imprisonment, donation of animals, maternal aunt (mother's brother's wife and sister), sea voyage, etc., should also be considered.

भावः स्वस्वामिसत्खेटै- र्युक्तो दृष्टोऽपि वर्धते ।
अशुभैरीक्षितयुतो नष्टो मिश्रैस्तु मध्यमः ॥ १२ ॥

12 : A house, if occupied or aspected by its lord or benefic planets will possess strength and a house, if occupied or aspected by the malefic planets is rendered weak. Should a house be occupied or aspected by both benefic and malefic planets, it will produce madium results.

प्रश्नांगौ चन्द्रमन्दौ विरश्मिर्शो घटे रविः ।
पृच्छको दुष्टभावेना-यातश्चेति विनिर्णयेत् ॥ १३ ॥

13 : In a query chart, if Saturn and the Moon, are posited in the Ascendant, and Mercury is combust and the Sun be in the Aquarious sign, it should be construed that the querist has come with dishonest intentions (deceptive motives).

प्रश्नांगपस्तनुं कार्य-गेहं कार्याधिपो यदि ।
कार्यमंगाधिपः कार्या-धीशोंऽग वाऽपि पश्यति ॥ १४ ॥

स्वस्वभवस्थयोर्लग्न- कार्याधीशनभोगयोः ।
मिथोदृष्टिस्तदाऽपि स्यात् कार्यसिद्धिः प्रयासतः ।
पुर्णेन्दुनेक्षितौ नो चे-दनायासं तु सा भवेत् ॥ १५ ॥

14-15 : When (i) the lord of the ascendant (Lagnesha) the Ascendant and the significator (Karyesha) related to query, aspects the concerned house, (ii) the lord of the Ascendant aspects the concerned house and significator (Karyesha) aspect the Ascendant or duly posited in their respective houses, (iii) Lagnesha and Kareysha are in a mutual aspect, the success will be acheived after making efforts. Should the Ascendant (Lagna) and Kareysha are aspected by the full Moon, the success is achieved all of a sudden.

ससद्ग्रहे तनौ सौम्य-वर्गगे शीर्षकोदये ।
त्वरितं व्यत्यये नैव मिश्र सिद्धिर्विलम्बतः ॥ १६ ॥

16: If the Ascendant (of the query chart) is conjoined with the auspicious planets or in the Vargas (Divisions) of the benefic planets and the Ascendant is in Sirshodaya sign (sign rising from the head), it will cause an early success.

प्रश्नांगेऽस्तित्रिकोणे वा स्वांशं स्वांशगतो ग्रहः ।
पश्येत्तदा धातुचिन्ता जीवचिन्तान्यभागगः ॥ १७ ॥

परांशं परभागस्थो मूलचिन्तां विनिर्दिशेत् ।
युग्मभेंऽशक्रमाज् ज्ञेये जीवं मूलं च धातुकम् ॥ १८ ॥

ओजेंऽशक्रमतो धातु - मूलजीवानि मौष्टिके ।

17-18 : A query held in the fist or thought of, will relate to Dhatu (article of the metal, mineral origin), if the planet (in a query chart) occupying its own Navamsa and aspects its own Navamsa in the Ascendant or in the trinal house. But, if the planet (in the same case) occupies the Navamsa of another planet and then aspects its own Navamsa in the Ascendant or in the trinal houses, the query will relate to Jeeva (matter connected with living beings). If the planet be in another's Navamsa and also aspects another's Navamsa in the Ascendant or in the trnal houses, the query will refer to Moola (some roots or vegetables kind).

In the case of even signs, if the Ascendant is located in the 1st Navamsa, the query will relate to Jeeva; in the 2nd Navamsa, Moola; in the 3rd Navamsa, it will concern Dhatu. Again, the 4th, the 5th, the 6th Navamsas will relate to Jeeva, Moola and Dhatu respectively. (Further, the 7th, the 8th and the 9th Navamsas will repeat the order). In the case of Ascendant be in the odd sign and is located in the 1st Navamsa, the fist query will relate to Dhatu, the 2nd Navamsa, Moola and the 3rd Navamsa, will refer to Jeeva. Similarly, the remaining six Navamsas of the odd sign will repeat twice.

Principle-1

If any planet occupying a Navamsa of its own, aspects a Navamsa of its own in the Ascendant, the 5th or the 9th house, it should be stated that the querist is thinking about Dhatu such as gold, silver, steel etc.

The Mars is posited in its own Navamsa (20° in Libra) and also aspecting its own Navamsa in the Ascendant (3°-Aries).

Principle-2

If the planet is occupying the Navamsa of another planet but is aspecting the own Navamsa in the Ascendant or the trinal houses (the 5th or the 9th), the query will relate to Jeeva

or living beings which term includes all creatures from human beings to repitiles.

The Ascendant is in the Navamsa of Saturn (Taurus 3º) and Saturn which is posited in the Navamsa of Venus (Scorpio 15°) is aspecting Ascendant (its own Navamsa).

Principle - 3

When the planet while occupying the Navamsa of another planet and aspects the Ascendant, the trinal house (5th or 9th) which happens to be the Navamsa of the another planet, the query will relate Moola.

Here Jupiter is occupying the Navamsa of Mars, (Sagittarious 3º) other than of its own and also aspecting Ascendant which is in the Navamsa of Mars (Gemini 4°). Therefore, the querist, was thinking of an article relating to Moola at the time of raising the query.

प्रश्नांगतः सुखे सौम्य- खेटो वा दशमे स्थितः ॥ १९ ॥

गमनं न भवेद् गन्तुः पापखेटे न चागमः ।
लग्नाच्चतुर्थाद् दशमाद् यावद्भिर्दिवसैर्ग्रहः ॥
द्वितीयराशिमभ्येति तावद्भिः पथिकागमः ॥ २० ॥

19-20 If there are benefic planets in the 4th and the 10th houses from the Ascendant of the query, the querist will proceed on journey and if malefic planets are occupying the same house, he will not travel. As many days a planet takes to transit from the Ascendant, the 4th house and the 10th house to the 2nd, the 5th and the 11th houses respectively, so many days the traveller will remain on tour.

सप्तमस्थानगश्चन्द्रो भाग्येशो भाऽपरार्धगः ।
पथिकं तु तदायान्तं पथि विद्याद् द्विजोत्तम ! ॥ २१ ॥

सुखे जीवोऽथवा शुक्र-श्चन्द्रो वा यदि संस्थितः ।
पथिकं गेहमायान्तं विद्याद् गणकसत्तमः ॥ २२ ॥

प्रश्नलग्नाद् द्वितीये वा तृतीये जीवभार्गवौ ।
पथिकं गेहमायातं जानीयात् प्रश्नवित्तदा ॥ २३ ॥

सितवित्सूर्य मन्दाना-मेकोऽपि चरलग्नगः ।
प्रवासी शीघ्रमायाति वक्री नैव यदा ग्रहः ॥ २४ ॥

21-24 : If from the Ascendant of query, the Moon is posited in the 7th house and the lord of the 9th house is in the first half of the sign, the traveller will be on his way back. If from the Ascendant of query, Jupiter, Venus orthe Moon is posited in the 4th house, the traveller is about to return home. If from the Ascendant of query, Jupiter and Venus are occupying the 2nd or the 3rd house, the traveller is almost at home (that is, he would be reaching home at any moment). If between Venus, Mercury and Saturn if any one posited in a movable sign, the traveller will return home quickly but these planets should not be in retrogression.

पृष्ठोदयगते लग्ने सददृष्टेऽशुभेक्षते ।
अशुभैः केन्द्रगैर्वापि पथिक क्लेशसंयुतः ॥ २५ ॥

25 : If any of the signs Aries, Taurces, Cancer, Sagittarius or Capricorn be the Ascendant of query and is not aspected by the aupicious planets and instead is under the aspect of malefic planets or the inauspicious planets are occupying the Angular ! houses, the journey will be distressful.

प्रश्नांगतोऽष्टमे सूर्ये भौमे वाऽपि तु चौरभीः ।
सिंहे रवौ, विधौ वाऽपि कुजे निधनगे सति ॥ २६ ॥

शनीक्षिते शस्त्रमीति-र्लग्ने चेन्न शुभो भवेत् ।
सशुभे दशमे वाऽपि नवमे सधनो हि सः ॥ २७ ॥

26-27 : If the Sun or Mars is posited in the 8th house from the Ascendant of query, it will cause fear of theives. If the Sun occupies Leo sign and the Moon or Mars is posited in the 8th house from the Ascendant of query and duly aspected by Saturn but receiving no benefic aspects, the traveller should think of fear of weapons. Should the 10th or the 9th house harbour benefic planet, the traveller will have lot of money on him.

प्रश्नांगस्त्रिषड्लाभ - जायापंचमभावगः ।
शशी-सूर्यज्ञगुर्भि-र्वीक्षितो वाऽपि लग्नतः ॥ २८ ॥

केन्द्रकोणगता जीव- विच्छुक सितरश्मयः ।
जायांगपौ लग्नजाया- गतौ पाणिग्रहोऽचिरात् ॥ २९ ॥

28-29 : If the Moon is posited in the 3rd, the 6th, the 11th, the 7th or the 7th house and aspected by Mercury or Jupiter or Jupiter, Mercury or the Moon is located in the Angular house from the Ascendant of query and the lords of the Ascendant and the 7th house are in the 7th and the 1st house respectively, the marriage will take place immediately.

पापा: सुखे मदे वाऽपि विबलो भार्गवो यदि ।
स्वर्भानुः सप्तमे वा स्या-न्म्रियते तु तदांगना ॥ ३० ॥

30 : If the malefic planets are in the 4th and the 7th houses from the Ascendant of query and Venus is weak and Rahu is in the 7th house, it will cause a certain death of the wife.

पापान्विते सप्तमे तु सुखे शुभखगान्विते ।
प्रथमा म्रियते पत्नी, धृता जीवति निश्चितम् ॥ ३१ ॥

31 : If malefic planet is in the 7th house and benefic planet in the 4th house, it will cause death to the wife but the mistress will remain alive..

सशुभ: पंचम: स्वामि-युक्तो वा तदवेक्षितः ।
सबलो मासपस्तर्हि गर्भ सकुशलं वदेत् ॥ ३२ ॥

32 : From the query Ascendant, if the 5th house is occupied by the auspicious planets or conjoined or aspected by the own lord and also the lord of the month (the Sun) is also well fortified, the pregnancy will be safe.

सुतप्रश्नजनुर्लग्ना-धीशौ पुंराशिगौ यदि ।
पुत्रं तदा विजानीयात् कन्या स्त्रीराशिगौ तु तौ ॥ ३३ ॥

शनिरोजर्क्षगो वाऽपि विषमांशगतो भवेत् ।
पुत्रदः पुत्रिकाजन्म- प्रदस्तु समभांशगे ॥ ३४ ॥

ओजे सुर्येन्दुगुरवः पुत्रजन्मप्रदाः स्मृताः ।
दृष्टावपि सुते शुक्र- भौमेन्दुनां युतौ भवेत् ॥ ३५ ॥

33-35 : If the lords of the Ascendant and the 5th house are in the odd signs, the son and if are in the feminine sign, the girl will born. The position of Saturn in the odd sign or in odd Navamsa, will also give son. The same Saturn happens to be in the even or in even Navamsa, the birth of girl will take place. The Sun, the Moon and Jupiter be in the odd sign or odd Navamsa will also give son. If the 5th house is aspected by Venus, Mars or the Moon, the birth of son will take place.

सितेन्दू बलिनौ पुत्र-स्थानं प्रश्नांगतो यदि ।
पश्यतः सुतदौ, कन्या- प्रदौ पंचमगौ यदि ॥ ३६ ॥

नीचास्तारित्रिकस्थान- गतौ सन्ततिबाधकौ ।
लाभगौ प्रबलावेतौ सुतदौ विबुधैः स्मृतौ ॥ ३७ ॥

36-37 : If a strong Venus, the Moon aspects the 5th house the son and if posited in the 5th house, the girl will take birth. Should Venus and the Moon are in the sign of debilitation or combust or in the inimical sign or posited in the 6th, the 8th or the 12th house, there will be obstruction in the birth of a child. Should these planets duly dignified and get posited in the 11th house, it will give birth to a child.

पंचमाधिपतिर्लग्ने लग्नेश: पंचमे यदि ।
प्रबलेन्दुयुतस्तर्हि पुत्रोत्पत्तिरसंशयम् ॥ ३८ ॥

प्रश्नांगपंचमेशौ चेदुच्चगौ भवतोऽपि च ।
मिथोदृष्टौ तदा पुत्र-जन्म वाच्यं बुधैः सदा ॥ ३९ ॥

38-39 : If the lord of the 5th house is posited in the Ascendant and the lord of Ascendant, be in the 5th house duly conjoined with the dignified Moon or if both the lords of the Ascendant and the 5th house are exalted and under mutual aspect, both these Yagas), there will be a certain birth of a son.

अस्तंगते पंचमेशे नीचे वा पीडिते खलैः ।
अपुत्रः प्रश्नकर्त्ता स्या- जातोऽपि म्रियते क्षणात् ॥ ४० ॥

स्वर्भानुना कुजेनापि युक्तश्चेत् पंचमाधिपः ।
तदाऽनपत्यता ज्ञेया पूर्वैरेतदुदीरितम् ॥ ४१ ॥

40-41 : If the lord of the 5th house is combust or in debilitation or afflicted by the malefic planets, the querist is not blessed with a child. Should a child take birth, he will die immediately. If the lord of the 5th house is conjoined with Rahu or Mars, even then the child will not survive. This is what ancient astrological savants have said.

पापर्क्ष प्रश्नलग्नं चे-दष्टमं पापखेटयुक् ।
पापेक्षितं वाऽन्तराले पापयोरष्टमे शशी ॥ ४२ ॥

सपापो वा खला रन्ध्रे व्यये, चन्द्रो नगेऽष्टमे ।
लग्नेऽरिभे तदा मृत्युः सत्वरं रोगिणो भवेत् ॥ ४३ ॥

चन्द्रे तनौ सप्तमेऽर्के, कुजेऽजेऽलिनवांशगे ।
चन्द्रेण सहिते मृत्यु - मादिशेद्रोगिणस्तदा ॥ ४४ ॥

42-44 : If (i) the Ascendant is in the sign of a malefic planet, (ii) the 8th house is occupied or aspected by the malefic planet, (iii) the Moon duly conjoined with malefic is posited in the 8th house and is also hemmed between two malefic planets, (iv) the malefic planets are in the 8th or 12th house, (v) the Moon is posited in the 1st, the 6th, the 7th or the 8th house from the Asendant of query or the Moon in the Ascendnt, (vi) Sun in the 7th house, (vii) the Mars be in the Aries sign and conjoined with the Moon of the Navamsa of Scorpio and in all these (seven) Yogas, the sick person will die soon.

प्रश्नलग्नात् सप्तमर्क्षे सशुभे वाऽथ लग्नपे ।
उदिते मृत्युषे हीनबले लाभा-धिपे तथा ॥ ४५ ॥

प्रबले, रोगिणः क्षेममादिशेद् गणकोत्तमः ।
लग्नात् सप्तमगे मिश्र ग्रहे मिश्रं फलं वदेत् ॥ ४६ ॥

45-46 : If (i) benefic planet is posited in the 7th house from the Ascendant of query, (ii) the lord of the Ascendant is a rising course, (iii) the lord of the 8th house is weak and lord of the 11th house is strong, the patient will recover and get well. Should the 7th house from the Ascendant of query is occupied with both benefic and malefic planets, the effect will be mixed one.

इति ते कथितं विप्र ! वेद्यं प्रश्नांगतो बुधैः ।
तद्वदेवाऽखिलं वस्तु ज्ञातुं शक्यमसंशयम् ॥ ४७ ॥

47 : O Brahmin ! I have acquainted you with the results of some of the queries from the Ascendant of query. In the same way, through Horary system, one can gain knowledge of all the matters.
